Title: Crash Landing on You Directors: Kim Hee-won and Lee Jung-hyo Distributor: Netflix Genre: Romance MPAA rating: TV 14 USCCB rating: N/A My Rating: 5 stars Primary Audience: Teenagers & Adults Year of Release: 2019-2020 Crash Landing on You, or in Korean, Sarabgeui Bylsachak, is a live action South Korean TV series that follows along the story of a rich young woman from South Korea who winds up in North Korea after being swept away in a storm while paragliding. This woman named Yoon Se-ri ends up meeting a military captain in North Korea named Captain Ri who keeps her safe and tries to help her return to South Korea. It is a heartwarming show about romance and friendship, however it does have a darker side to it revealing some sad truths about the situations in North Korea. There’s love, heartbreak, battles, and escape plans all in one. Yoon Se-ri returns to South Korea safely, however she is devastated because Captain Ri, whom she has fallen in love with, must remain in North Korea. The ending scene is a tear jerking one, showing that they finally meet again a few years later in Switzerland were they both used to visit. It ends with them crying in each other’s arms with many questions of what is to come. Overall I think it is a well rounded show and I quite enjoyed it and would say it is one of my favorite cinematic pieces. IMG_0068.jpeg The Seven Media Keys The First Media Key: Balance Crash Landing on You displays a brilliance within the media key of balance. The premise of the show is a South Korean woman learning about what it truly is like within North Korea. It does not give a black and white view on the two countries but points out the good things going on in both cultures without praising or romanticizing them. The show practices the virtue of temperance because it could have taken an angle of bashing North Korea excessively, however it does not remain on this topic. It does reveal unfortunate situations in North Korea but it remains temperate and focuses on the storyline rather than continuously degrading the country which is especially impressive coming from South Korea which is there enemy. The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness The shows attitude towards both characters remains neutral, however of course being a South Korean show it leans towards South Korea being the better country. Throughout the show we follow along Se-ri in North Korea seeing how life is lived there. It shows the poor villages and the sad truth that comes from their communistic ways. Although the message of the show remains about romance there is an underlying meaning based upon the scenes of North Korea. It reveals the harsh truth of the military captains and generals getting better treatment, the suffering of the common folk, and the constant fear of death within the communities. Although I believe the show dumbed down some aspects of what is really going on in North Korea the message is still there. This message being that those living in that country are in poor conditions and are treated harshly and wrongly. The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person In order for a piece of media to respect the dignity of the human person there must be a sense of justice throughout. Crash Landing on you has this sense through its sense of the gift of life. Captain Ri is the greatest example, he is supposed to be a cold soldier with no feelings, while instead we see he has a sense of human dignity and wants to save Se-ri from death. He does so many times in different ways. He helps her escape North Korea, when it is his job to kill her. We see before he knew Se-ri he had even saved her life. She was going to jump off a bridge in Switzerland and commit, he sees this and asks for her to take a photo of him to save her. The show also portrays the value in human life through Se-Ri having to go to North Korea to see its worth. It has a strong sense of justice and the dignity of the human person. The Fourth Media Key: Truth-Filled I would not say that this show was entirely accurate and it was in no way based on true events. However, the show did display some harsh truths and persevered in fortitude through it. Although South Korea is already at risk against North Korea military this show decided to go ahead with the truth despite that. As stated before it reveals some sad truths within the country of North Korea and how often the citizens are subject to suffering and death. Crash Landing on You was not afraid to display truthfulness and did not mislead others into romanticizing this truth. The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring The show was inspiring through the friendships made between the South Korean girl and the North Koreans. Throughout the show we follow her along as people with hardened hearts learn to love and respect her. She creates a bond between the two countries that was destroyed through war and death. Especially through the romance aspect, that enemies could be lovers. It has a hopeful atmosphere that there could one day be peace again between the two countries. The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed The foundation of the show is overall skillfully developed. It takes perspectives of two different people and portrays their realities. Upon further research I found out that they had a North Korean Defector read over the script for a better accuracy of life inside North Korea. The writers of the show never ceased in trying to give a well done storyline and accurate descriptions. Some parts obviously fictional but still well done. The show is well rounded in all parts, it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s romantic, it’s action packed, it is all of the above. I found that many people would like this show because of how skillfully developed it was. The Seventh Media Key: Motivated and Relevant to Experience Clearly the show is motivated and relevant to experience, being that it’s main aspect is about a very real situation between North and South Korea today. As stated above they had a North Korean defector read the script over making it relevant to experience and especially so through the writers own experience of South Korea. The show was not based on a true story but I am sure some things that occurred in the show could have happened in real life. Obviously it is imposible for a storm to sweep you away to North Korea while paragliding and even if you’d happen to make it there the likelihood of you finding a nice soldier who would not kill you is low. However, there were many moments throughout the show that seemed like very probable scenarios. Such as the first time Se-Ri tries to escape is known as one of the only ways out of North Korea, on a boat to China. However, she and the captain get caught. This is a likely instance that I have researched and learned happens often. This shows that Crash Landing on You is not entirely fictional and must be based on and relevant to experience.

Can’t believe I just watched this show now in 2024 thinking it was new to Netflix….until I seen this review and its time stamp 😮 Such an amazing show! Would have been shot potentially nearing covid Amazing show 9/10. Had everything covered so well! The ending I wish could have had a bit more……something to it as it felt rushed a little and slightly repetitive with the flash backs. Regardless, I absolutely loved the show and cast. Brought me to tears many times

I have watched last month "My Mister" and was blown away how good it was. The acting was awesome and IU plays her sad role so well. This week i finished Healer and I love it so much too. It was fun to see the lovely couple, great chemistry and nice story. Only the ending was a bit rush imo. Better would be they are going to an island and the moment when the mom knows about her dauther and they both hugging, crying together is missing. Both Drama's will always have a special place in my heart xD

Nice to have you back on the tube 🥰👍 Family by Choice is a Skipping by Choice for me. Since I find being in a K-Drama rut every once in a while soooo relatable, here`s some recommendation for you (and everyone in our bubble who`s up for some pointers). I`m currently watching "The Judge from Hell" (which I went into with very high hopes and expectations to be honest). Thus far its pretty good, with some minor but considerable issues, primarily the mass appeal approach being too obvious, as its too smooth around the edges for my likes. Plus I would wish for the human (and demon 😋) interactions to have a little more meat on their bones, be more intense and feel more meaningful. Six or seven episodes in, it ranges from servicable and a bit formulaic to very good with chances for (semi-) greatness). Also, on a rewatch of "The Fiery Priest", since a 2nd season is gonna drop in November and its been some years. Charming, fun, quirky, recommended show. Last 2 shows I`d finished: Flex-x-Cop..... yeah, very watchable. Ultimately, more of the same though. Decent stuff nonetheless. People seem to really like it quite a bit. I do not understand some of the hype I`ve come across for this show though. Also do NOT understand the anti-hype for Strong Girl Nam-soon, now that I`ve finally gotten around to watching it. Binge-worthy fluff with a great look and not so great script. Okay... actually I DO understand some of the gripes people have had with it (particularly die hard fans of Bong-soon, I presume). But I found it a very okay companion piece to the more serious, darker thriller-type shows I`d watched alongside Nam-soon.

It's so good to see you back! I definitely understand the Kdrama rut. I've been in the rut as well for awhile but have kept watching hoping a gem will come out. I've become more comfortable dropping the shows when I didn't used to do that before. I really miss the quality of shows like My Mister and Reply 1988 to name a couple. Hopefully they will bring shows like that back again! I am really enjoying this show as well! I agree with you about the female lead. She definitely seems too juvenile for her age which takes me out of the show a bit. Other than that though I am really enjoying it. I actually am already familiar with the storyline since I watched the Cdrama "Go Ahead" that this Kdrama is based on. For someone who prefers Kdramas, I really enjoyed that Cdrama. It's very well done and the female lead was so good in it all the way through. I highly recommend watching that one if you'd like to do a comparison. I like seeing this Korean take on the show though so I'm looking forward to seeing how this one develops!

I gave up on Hollywood because I'm tired of American culture and its endless rudeness toward everything. So, the thing is King the Land is what it is 😂 its fluffy feel good romcom 💕✨️ There's so many great kdramas out there that have sublimely written characters with deeper meanings or reflections on society - this show just isn't that genre and - I don't _think_ it's trying to be? There's countless scenes that you can tell - they're almost joking along with the audience regarding really obvious tropes. Also, with the female lead - again this is a fluffy feel good show, it's not a real dichotomy of korean economic issues, they make squeaky bear sounds when she does heart hands 😂 you know? I think what they're showing with her is not pretty privilege - but that she does work hard on her own *to gain* those skills of being multi lingual & noticing the tiniest details, and knowing her jobs skill requirements and that - *you shouldn't* have to go to "X" university to be the only candidates viable for that job. She was an orphan who grew up with her grandma so also tells the audience likely not able to afford hagwon / university fees in korea with that particular family set up. Saying that I get what you're saying, they could have pieced a few scenes together *showing* her join a late night study class etc etc for all her skills but I guess that's kinda spoken for itself isn't it - when she suddenly speaks Japanese and Chinese or when she helps her colleague with her lil black book or customer tips/places to visit that she researched on her own - that didn't just "pop" out of no where, obviously she made the effort to be able to speak Japanese/research customer related issues. Also those specific scenes where she suddenly speaks japanese etc - those scenes were to flip it on the judgemental characters in the scene who just assume shes not capable just because she didnt go to "X" university- as the audience we get the "gotchya moment" from the judgemental characters perspectives- hence maybe why you felt her skills "popped out of no where" All that being said, it's a fun lil feel good classic romantic kdrama, if you go into it knowing that I think you'll really enjoy this show 💕 however if you go into it expecting any high brow narratives you will be disappointed 😂 as this show isn't trying to achieve that. If you *are* looking for that, really suggest. Call it Love, My Liberation Notes, Tell Me You Love Me 🫶🏽

There's one character that stole the whole show for me and it was the grandma. She's the uncle Iroh of this drama. Same with the CEO-driver in the drama Encounter. The other characters were fine, the story was okay, but if there's a kind person who loves you who you are, who always wants the best for you and supports you - I'm sold. How their grandma embraces Suzys sister and the 2nd male lead as family - I cry!

I agree on a lot of points here. I found the show on the Viki app of a hotel TV while I was abroad and decided to give it a chance since it was free and I'd never heard of it before. Some actors I love were in the series; as you said, it had so much potential. But after several episodes, I realized why it was in the Free category on Viki. The standard tropes and cliche plots were done in such a lame way. I really hated the Mary Sue character, who always tried to "understand" people. Yet, she was super judgy and had no backbone on a daily basis, minus the 2 instances when she stood up to her boss after being fired and when she threw her shoe at the male lead. She let her colleagues walk all over her, then the producers from the show, the much younger fans, the narcissistic ex, and whoever else. It got very annoying after a while. The romance part was a bit rushed, mainly on the guy's part; the MCs were fighting and couldn't stand each other, didn't trust one another at all and then suddenly, the guy fell for her, just like that. Also, the fact that he kept kissing her and then suddenly decided to visit her parents out of the blue, even though they hadn't talked about things properly and decided whether they were in a relationship or not, was a bit weird. Another thing is the trope of dating a celeb; the characters were all going around willy-nilly, with no managers or bodyguards or paparazzi around. The two MCs went on a date in a park, out in the open with people around, took off their masks, and walked around with no protection, yet not a single person outside recognized or tried to take a photo of the so-called "top star." The same thing happened during their trip to Japan or when the producers ditched them on their own. Even when the male lead started feeling bad about the female lead, he still kept faking his character and making her look bad during the show, then he'd come and comfort her behind the scenes or when he fell for the female lead yet still got swayed by his ex. It was very two-faced. Overall, I kept watching for a bit to see if things would change and get better, but it kept getting worse, so I ditched the show soon after.

You should continue watching dear. Me too felt the same way. I dont like the slow pacing dramas. But this one is an exemption. As the episodes goes by it gets more exciting and romantic. I think the director did the slow pacing on purpose so audience will see the growth of each character and their relationship as well. ❤❤❤ i watched it many times..

Good review. I don’t watch a lot of Kdramas but was aware of different styles of speech. Not something Americans are aware of but it exists in many languages. I agree that there could have been a way to subtlety explain Korean culture so the viewers were aware - even a voice over works.

Whoever wrote this script was either high or had alzheimer... the story didn't make sense at all.. normally you have contradictions in the storyline within episodes, but in this series events contradict each other within episodes... its extremely poorly written. And can someone explain how the title related to the series ?!? Happiness ?!?

🥺 thank you so much for saying that. I really want to be back, I just haven't been enjoying kdramas for months now. It's hard to review something if I'm not watching anything 😔 I have thought about doing other types of videos but don't feel like people would be interested in them.

In my opinion, I think song kang deserve to have jojo because he makes the first move and he dared to approach Jojo and he was honest about his feelings towards Jojo but hye yeong is hesitant to express her feelings for jojo and is very slow to approach jojo so i think so hun deserve to get jojo first because he makes the first move and i can see in jojo eyes that she likes so hun too (songkang) that's how i feel but im still confused about this drama, the plot and everything just feel weird on season 2

For me, this was simply one of the greatest and most subtly depicted fictional love stories I have ever seen. Great, because it avoids cliche and shows love in its purest form. As every other character close to Ji-An and Dong-Hoon observes during the series (including the grandma and Dong Hoon’s own wife), theirs is a special and precious connection. It is beyond words and conventional descriptions. Soul mates? Yes, but clearly more than that I think. This was ultimately an intensely beautiful and respectful love between a man and a woman. Admittedly, its overt expression was repressed due to the age gap, the conservative nature of Korean society and Dong Hoon’s own admirable care for doing the right thing by Ji-An. But it was that repression and need, especially by Dong Hoon, to observe social boundaries, that ultimately gave it its dramatic power, in my view. Ever the stoic and the man who put duty before temptation, Dong Hoon is liberated only in the last episode. The production suggests as much in the transformed light and tone and his own almost beatific smile. While not said openly, it seems clear his marriage is finally over. As for Ji-An, she is no longer the lost and desperate fringe-dweller dependent on him. They now meet as equals. And the look of unrestrained happiness on Dong Hoon’s face upon seeing her again tells you a real adult relationship is possible. She has a new self-respect and remains as drawn to him as she always was, but now from an equal standing. I recalled what I see as the most penetrating observation of Dong Hoon in the entire series. It was during his visit to his Buddhist monk friend. The wise monk urges him to stop living for everybody else and seek out his own happiness. After that, Dong Hoon’s grim, perpetually self-restrained stoicism starts to crack. The breakdown scene in episode 16 is when the edifice finally collapses. And, no, I don’t think the tears were for his estranged wife. That marriage had been dead for some time. The tears were for the loss of Ji-An, the person who saved his life (by his own admission) and who had understood him more than anyone else in his life. This is why their chance meeting was so beautiful and so full of possibility. As to why there is so much disagreement among fans of the show about the nature of the central characters’ relationship, my guess is that is a reflection of different perspectives among its creators. I think the relationship is written as one between platonic soulmates, but it is directed and scored as a romance. The long soulful looks, the emotional punch of the brilliant songs and incidental music, the running to each other are all indications of something much more than friendship. But that inherent tension about the indefinable nature of their love is also what keeps you watching. This was an impeccably written, sensitively directed, exquisitely acted TV drama. It’s certainly the best Korean drama I’ve seen and perhaps the best television drama full stop - one full of intensely moving and life-affirming insights into the power of love, human connection, community and the nature of happiness. On a final note, the sudden death late last year of Lee Sun-Kyung, who played Dong Hoon, was such a tragedy. He was a nuanced, selfless and brilliant actor. More than anything, in my view, it was his on-screen chemistry and unspoken dance of the soul with the beautiful and charismatic IU that made My Mister such an unforgettable experience

I saw all news from the time the drama was announced, who would be the leads and first script reading. But the age difference and seemingly the depression I saw from the posters, thru me off for a long time. Until I finally gave it a change after 3 years of it's debut. Boy boy boy... i have no words for it!!! it's the only drama I saw again, full several times after! And I can't put any other drama on it's level even till now! "My liberation Notes" is great too, I I see the same quality of production, but still "My Mister" can't be surpassed. And as for the leads..i already knew Lee Sung hyun was a star, but IU really solidified her place as a top actress with this drama. To any one who hasn't yet watched it, you are missing something great!!

To judge this by one episode is a joke. You robbed yourself and others who listened to you, of a fucking awesome show. I did the same thing to myself by judging Goblin the same way, but i put my initial feelings aside and decided to watch the 1st 4 episodes no matter what before deciding. And that was the right decision. Goblin is now one of my favorites. Vincenzo is the exact same way. The rest of the show has so much character growth and development you are missing out on that you can't possibly get from watching even the 1st quarter of the show. If you're going to trash it based off the 1st episode alone, then you're just dumb.
