- Yo! We're mixing things up a bit by taking it out of the studio and into.... Eric's apartment? Different look, different space. And we tackle those films our film professors and critics have been telling us are CLASSIC! Citizen Kane, Vertigo, musty Merchant-Ivory flicks, Casablanca and much more.
VERTIGO is overrated, dude.
More strange comments about the Long Good Friday very fine ending if you really believe that one gangster is going to take on the entire IRA come on, he is presented as a very reasonable gangster not nutty as Hitler, in fact Hitler might have balked at the IRA. Otherwise LGF is a very fine piece of work and a great ending...but if any of you with a handful of men would take on the IRA you would need a nuclear device and decent delivery system
i hate christmas story. an obnoxious mess imo.
Ok, is anybody else annoyed with the flaws in Edwin' s arguments? It's so irritating to hear. And none of these guys are calling him out on it!
OMG knocking about Merchant Ivory?!?!? get.a.clue.
Wheres Danny Peary?
What about the Spanish movie "What have I done to deserve this". Load of shit. As for the Marx brothers. The early ones are classics. The later MGM films suck.
Different authors, Pierre Boulle who wrote The Planet of the Apes and Pierre Boileau who co-wrote She Who Was No More which the film Diabolique was based on. NOT THE SAME AUTHORS!!!!
I'm with Jeff on this one, behind him on every point about Easy Rider, mad respect for such a great topic too. I would definitely say Godfather would be my pick for movies that are considered classics but I thought sucked, but I think The Beatles suck too. Anyway, great show and doing a one in Eric's house was awesome.
I have an idea for a show - Guilty Pleasure Movies; movies that you are guilty to admit that you like.
How about a show about Mark Kermode film critic, is he right or wrong?
a Lot of people Seven Samurai is Classic do you guys like it. i think its great
Why dont you guys go back to tgis sort of setting again.
I agree about Vertigo / The Graduate conversation. I enjoyed The Graduate, but I absolutely love Hitchcock, and until about a couple of years ago when I saw Rebecca, Vertigo was my favorite Hitchcock film. Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors of all time.
I am not as schooled on films and directors as you guys, but while I can name the director of Vertigo, I couldn't name the director of The Graduate off the top of my head.
What i love about Jeff is that hes much more open minded than the others and is not biased. and he wont bitch about a movie before he sees it.
Great episode you guys, I love debates like this. This easily could have been a 2 parter.
Loved the comparison of Vertigo to The Graduate. I agree with Jeff about Easy Rider on several points. I love Citizen Kane and Casablanca myself.
Glad you got to touch on the Marx Brothers a bit, freaking love em. Duck Soup and Night at the Opera are classics. After Opera and Day at the Races their MGM films start to go downhill.
I can't wait for your Hitchcock episode, I love Hitchcock movies.
Vertigo is my favourite Hitchcock film. I think it definitely deserves the acclaim it gets. The direction, cinematography, visual style, performances, story, atmosphere and soundtrack are all fantastic. I don't know if I would consider it the No. 1 greatest film of all time like the Sight & Sound Poll does (for me, that belongs to my all-time favourite film "2001: A Space Odyssey"), but I definitely think it deserves to be in the top 10. "Vertigo" is my 4th favourite film of all time.
i love casablanca.
Awesome!
I like the Graduate, but the guys are right. Vertigo is waaaaaaaay better.
I think they where already going downhill with Day at the Races. It has some of their best stuff, and it's better than what came later. But it's still a big come down from Night at the Opera
Citizen Kane is overrated. I can't believe how people see it as the greatest movie of all time. Camera work or directing doesn't make orson welles hideous acting ability great or the slow and boring story great, or the cheesy rosebud conclusion at the end thats meant to be such a revelation.
We actually talk about Long Good Friday on our UK Gangster Flick ep. Check it out.
Edwin, I think you are so wrong about The Graduate- not in terms of comparing it to Vertigo per say, but it is an outstanding cinematic achievement in it's right.
Good video, I also have to respect that Edwin's sweater shows up in videos 2 years after this is filmed!
split screens were used in the silent era.
THE LONG FRIDAY on Netflix watch instantly. Watch this, EXCALIBUR and CALIGULA to see just how hot Helen Mirren really was.
Great idea littleshoeshopper "Guilty Pleasures" would make a great topic along same lines "Movies I should not like but do".
I love citizen kane but, when orson welles character dies ALONE and his last words are "rosebud"
how is there is a media frenzy too search for the meaning of his "famous" last words without anyone to hear them?
Big flaw in script, yet not hugely noticed!
roger hazeldon He says it twice. First to all of his employees after tearing his room apart and then he says it alone during the snow globe scene. So... Kane's last known word(s) was "Rosebud".
I think The Graduate ages very well compared to films like Midnight Cowboy or Easy Rider that came out around the same time.
Gone with the wind was a good movie, soap operaish but you can say that it pretty much originated the soap opera genre. I enjoyed the Mami, who won an Oscar for that film and Rhett Butler played a role that females fawn for. I'm not surprised these guys didn't give it a chance it being the ultimate chick flick of its time laying out the breadcrumbs for most chick flicks of today.
I hate how an all time 100 classic pretty much stays at it's top spot and rarely gets knocked down, this includes the old 3d animation films like toy story.
01:16 that plonker should have said "on his right" not left.
heh loved that intro, love when you guys have a little thing before the intro.
I was under the impression from my film studies was that Welles had his techs, develop the lenses needed for the depth of field shots. On the film though, I cant says its the best film. Certainly set the technical standard but if you listen to this chat, they don't actually even mention the plot.
+Terry Burns It was not a lens. It was a split screen shot. It was a visual cheat.
Yes, it's in the works.
Each film is made in a social, personal and artistic context. Comparing any of these films is absurd. You have to watch each one on its own and let it in. The question should be how well has each film aged in relation to its reputation. Is "His Girl Friday" still a great watch. Is it fun and relevant? Almost all the films mentionned are still quite watchable. I see the point about "Easy Rider". It still has an important place in history, but it is somewhat difficult to watch.
Yeah, it's like what is your favorite X? There isn't anyone at every time. I watched a lot of Hitchcock and 70s horror in my youth and early 20s. Then my taste and desires changed. If a generation declares it a classic, respect!
jrregan I mention "His Girl Friday" because I constantly think of "made for use" and today's American gun society. There are mass shootings every day somewhere in the US. The NRA would have us believe guns are for hunting or self defense, not for killing. Made for use. Hawks would be unable to get "His Girl Friday" made today.
Classics that I think are overrated
Casablanca
A Hard Days Night
All about Eve
The Great Dictator
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Bridge on the River Kwai
High Noon
Rosemary's Baby
The Graduate
Shane
The Wolf Man
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Dracula(1931)
The Night of the Hunter
On the Waterfront
Ozzyslashbourne TBOTRW is fucking amazing
Ozzyslashbourne So is about 90% of the films on your list
Hope you guys do more shows on Classics.
Maybe even a John Ford episode!
