6. The Deer Hunter
7. The Godfather 1 & 2
8. The Departed
9. Unforgiven
10. In the Heat of the Night
Bring the show back. Do the gents still get along? Thanks
I appreciate your guys' discussions very much (and totally agree on some of your picks such as Crash and Forest Gump), but HOLY MOLY you've got so many Oscar facts wrong with this tape in terms of which awards were handed out when and what picture beat what other film.
Silent Running, was an enviromental film at a time when it wasn't popular to talk about theses issues in the movies. George Lucas said it should have gotten the Oscar for Best picture, best actor and best director.
"That wasn't a very good year - Cider House Rules, Saving Private Ryan, Traffic" .. they're all from different years lol i still love you guys tho you should start making videos again
American History X deserved best picture 1999 (1998).
"It wasn't a very strong year for movies"
I haven't seen any of them, but I've heard good things about The Big Lebowski, The Thin Red Line, and Dark City. I've actually seen The Truman Show and liked it.
Okay yeah you guys are right.
Platoon is great, though it did feel like a bit too much of a standard Vietnam war flick...okay I'm generally not big on war movies. I saw both it and Full Metal Jacket for the first time recently over the span of a few days and preferred the latter, though I'm an unabashed Kubrick fan.
Oscar snubs go back pretty far. for instance, did you know that Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon both lost to "How Green Was My Valley"? What a travesty that was...
Quick Question: I know there are a lot of different opinions on this, but what did you think about The deer hunter winning BP?
Last of the Mohicans is my biggest gripe, total snub and easily better than all the films nominated. At the very least it should have had Best Cinematography and Best Director nominations.
The biggest crime was that ET didn't win and Gandi did.
The worst films to win the best picture Oscar are The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Cimarron (1931), Cavalcade (1933), The Great Zeigfeld (1936).
I do agree with you guys though in that there is so much B.S. that the Academy throws out. Pulp Fiction should have won.
Um guys I hate to break it to you but Brando DID win for On The Waterfront. Earnest borgnine won the following year.
people hate on forrest gump to much these dudes ALL enjoyed it in the theater i guarantee it.
I've bee through divorce....3 times. Twice my mother got divorced from two other gentleman, besides my very own father. All before I as the age of 15. I realize it's a well made film and had a strong message, but comparing that message to the horrors & atrocities of war??? COME ON....
Whoo!! Forest Gump is my least favorite Oscar win as well!
Taxi Driver was the best movie of 1976.
I gotta hand it to eric, man you can argue!
i'd watch that.
best cameron film is the abyss, by far.
Best win would be, er I don't know, Casablanca? I'm the only one on this?
APOLLO 13 was a very good film; RON HOWARD!
Good example. "The Sound of Music" beat out "Doctor Zhivago" in 1965. I didn't like "Driving Miss Daisy" as well.
hating forrst gumps makes me love you guys.
Although not the best film of the year, and not being perfect like Pulp and Shawshank, it's still a great movie.
thanks guy for saying forrest gump suxs.its a horror film to some.
Driving Miss Daisy is the worst Oscar Best Picture movie I've saw yet.
but a beatifull mind was almost equally good .
btw : im not a hater i enjoy your vids but i find you to be a little too strict with judgment.
Sincerely a 15 year old cine freak from Greece !
Titanic is such an unimaginative piece of crap. I like Kate Winslet, but that film did not deserve any accolades except for special effects.
I love Titanic, but Boogie Nights, by the littlest bit, deserved the Best Picture Oscar.
Eric Cohen Forest Gump is a very good movie, you're wrong. To say it's a pos is dumb. Good movie, not a great movie, but DEFINITELY NOT a pos, so you're wrong either way...
ET was a dumb movie.
yes, thank you for shitting all over Forrest Gump. it is a way overrated piece of crap!!! let's not forget that Zemeckis also won best director for Forrest Gump in 94 against Tarantino for Pulp Fiction AND Kieslowski for Les Trois Coleurs: Rouge!!!!
What about movies that were not even nominated?????
I stand by my opinion that Malcolm X and Denzel Washington should have been nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor, respectively. But this is coming from someone who named her son Malcolm . . .
Brando won for on the waterfront. Marty came out the next year.
I really enjoy watching you guys´show
you all know a lot about movies and you got great chemistry together
Michael Foltz finally spoke out about Kubrick´s Dr Strangelove at 32:05 losing to my fair lady.
You could have spent more time talking about how Kubrick ("the greatest film maker that will ever exist" according to Steven Spielberg) never won an Oscar.
So, Why are Oscars so important?
When will there be new episodes
I'd love to see you guys do a show on Nic Roeg, Terry Gilliam or even David Lynch.
I'm surprised that you guys don't aknowledge THE SAWSHANK REDEMPTION. I thought it was as good, if not better than PF.
That said, I love Forrest Gump. But either Pulp Fiction and TSR should have won.
And Goodfellas not winning is a bigger travesty, IMO.
And I was also doubfounded that Beautiful Mind, AND Chicago prevailed over the first two LOTR films.
And finally, Al Pacino never winning Oscar for playing Michael Corlone in ANY of the Godfather films, is one preposterous rip-off.
i love the trees in two towers
again, yes! I love that you denounce A Beautiful Mind for the piece of crap that it is. A Beautiful Mind beats out LOTR and Gosford Park? To add insult to injury, Howard also gets best director over Peter Jackson, David Lynch, and Robert Altman? Unbelievable!!
Pulp Fiction was bigger travesty! Forrest Gump was an overrated joke! Dances With Wolves was a great film so was Goodfellas. Goodfellas was like Scarface, follow foot soldiers doing the dirty work
Taxi Driver was a travesty! Marty & Bob were cheated! Rocky is so sappy and predictable! Peter Finch's crazy is just so exaggerated!
Love your show and happy to subscribe. Question for all four of you? STAR WARS or ANNIE HALL for best picture1977? Look forward to your next reviews and THE STOOGES kicks ass!!!!
I don't think that one should always compare the winner to other films of the year. I mean each year has some really good films and I can't say that I fully agree with the Best Picture winner very often. I can't even agree on The Godfather although I think it's a marvelous film but it came out the same year as The discreet charme of the burgeoisie. I can't agree on Lawrence of Arabia either and I love Lawrence of Arabia, it's my 2nd favorite BP winner of all time but it just happens to come out the same year as La Jetée which I love about as much. Obviously this is nitpicking. I love all the films I just mentioned but I don't think it's that important that the "best" movie wins as often it's hard to say anyway. Most films have their merits and I'm fine if a good film wins. I actually prefer if perhaps not the best film wins, but a good film that won't get much attention if not for the awards. However if an actually bad film wins thats obviously uncool. Crash was in my opinion horrible and Dances with wolves was tedious. I also dislike Platoon as every character seems like a pretentious plot device that Oliver Stone rams right into your face. I think all 3 of those films had their conflicts overly dumbed down. It could have been done much more subtle and with more concideration.
Wow at the bashing of Forrest Gump and A Beautiful Mind, my Mom loves them both. I'm aware they're both rather cool to hate on (although Gump somehow has a ridiculously high IMDB rating) though.
Both Crash & Forrest Gump were unrealistic pretty much or overly indulgent in its message. It should not of beaten Pulp Fiction in any universe whatsoever.
I can't believe there are four of you and there are still so many holes in your knowledge of movies. There wasn't much competition the year No Country for Old Men won? Well, except for the movie that should have won, There Will be Blood.
Great topic. A lot of points I agree and disagree on. The big agreement is Forrest Gump, that film is just OK. What should have one that year was Shawshank Redemption, even over Pulp Fiction. ( 1994 had a lot of fuck ups, why was Quiz Show not nominated?)
I disagree about No Country for Old Men, its competition was amazing (There will be blood, Juno, Atonement, and my favorite, Michael Clayton)
BTW, It was Shakespeare in Love that beat out Private Ryan, but none of '98 nominees were great.
I think forrest gump is a good movie, i do like it. But i do agree, its so so overated, its just simple idea, simple story thats. First time i saw it i was that was good, didnt even make me rethink my life at all. But i wasent bored, it was a good movie, with someone good moments with the stuff in vietnam and when hes running and some touching moments, but its just a simple movie, its not up there with the greats just overated, i think the acting in it is fine to. But, its not life changing.
no offense guys but i found pulp fiction boring and over the top but good fellas is a master piece and what jeff said about good fellas it was a very different film from Scorsese and for films in general as was pulp fiction so i do not agree with eric about pulp fiction being more the injustice not getting a oscar because it was more different for its time than good fellas, the good fellas was different
everyone knew that martin scorsese would have more chances of winning an academy award (and he nearly did with the gangs of new york and a couple of years later he finally took it with the departed) kevin conster was like " now or never" thats why he got the oscar.
now A Beautifull Mind was a great film ,i dont think it deserved to get the award but it was a great film , i love the LOTR trilogy im a huge fan almost a geek (im a star wars geek thats why im almost lotr geek)
Bad oscar winner? Driving Miss Daisy. Crash was poor too as you all said. I agree with what you say about Pulp Fiction being a somewhat revolutionary genre film that missed out (although Shawshank Redemption should have beat Gump too), but I've always thought The Shining not even being nominated was a travesty as it took what was basically a B movie sub-genre and made something amazing - the same could also be said for Star Wars missing out to Annie Hall in '77 (though AH is terrific)
I 100% agree with you, it is a great travesty Alfred Hitchcock never won for Best Director. He was one of the greatest directors EVER.
Great episode, loved the discussion. I agreed with some of your choices, esp Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction, Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas. And esp Titantic over LA Confidential. LA is one of my all time favorites and it should have won.
Loved Edwin and Jeff mentioning the politics of the Oscars, that is very true.
Can't wait for the next ep!
I Agree with all four of these and add American In PAris because I've never been able to sit through it completely.
Also 80 Days around the world is a fun film but not even Oscar-worthy let alone a winner, though it might have been the best of the sorry lot (Friendly Perrsuasion excluded because I've never seen it.
Most movies have five plot points. Reason why I prefer pulp fiction more is because it is three stories or short films that could have been made into full length features and put together in one film. Giving you 15 plot points, every scene an sequence moved the story.
and although I think Rocky is a good film, it not only wrongly beat Network as you mentioned, but also Taxi Driver, which I find amazing. One more oscar error that stands out to me is Kramer vs Kramer beating Apocalypse Now, how did they figure that one out??
i agree with Edwin. No one really favors the Two Towers but I think it's the absolute emotional height of the trilogy and had absolute perfect performances throughout. Not to mention Andy Serkis as Smeagol. And the ending of this one is fantastic.
ANNIE HALL won over STAR WARS, now genre films wouldn't have won in the 70's, but STAR WARS changed cinema, even then. Should have been recognized, especially after the train wreck it was during production.
@cinefiles I do like Forrest Gump, but i do agree with everything Eric said, all it is is just a fucking film. Theres no message in it, its just a movie poeple need to calm the fuck down.
Wrong! Marlon Brando won best actor in '54 and the movie won best picture. Marty won best picture in '55 and Borgnine won best actor.
Ernest Borgnine won in 1955 for "Marty". Marlon Brando won the year before for "On the Waterfront". Borgnine beat James Cagney, James Dean, Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy
It doesn't have to have meaning to be a great flick. Forrest Gump was a great experience to watch as a movie. It wasn't challenging but it was a wild ride.
you wanna talk about special effect Mike how bout the baby scene in the bath tub in a beautiful mind !!
There's no doubt that JFK was the best movie of 1991. Silence was just a horror movie with better than usual actors for the genre.
Wow, now I blew it. I really thought it wasn't,
Them overlooking Ralph Fiennes's performance was the travesty I was thinking of.
Uh, what is swarthy about you? You are the least swarthy people on the web, other than Gallashaw. Look up "swarthy", seriously.
The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2 & Casablanca all won the best picture Oscar and I would say are the 3 best films to do so.
what do you guys think about No Country For Old Men beating out There Will Be Blood? TWBB is an instant classic in my book
Return of the King favourite Oscar winner. Seriously?
good fellas was a very different type of ganster film compared to something like the god father like jeff said
Oliver! beats 2001: A Space Odyssey -1968
As much as I love Pulp Fiction, I actually believe Shawshank Redemption should've won 1994 'Best Picture'.
In 1985, "Out of Africa" beat out "Prizzi's Honor, "The Color Purple" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman."
Yep. Yer right. Blew it on that call. But, Shakespeare in Love sucked. So who cares?
Marlon Brando won in 1954. the guy who played Marty won in 1955.
Shakespeare In Love !!???? What? Really???
2 other great best picture winners, Lawrence of Arabia & All About Eve.
error guys. marty came out in 1955. on the waterfront came out in 1954.
i think an Oscar crime was when out of Africa beat Ran
Steve Buscemi is not in Longtime Companion.
Crash deserved to win best picture!
they're getting their years completely mixed up
it's coming soon at least a terry gilliam one
Shakespeare in Love was the worst pick ever!!!
These dudes need to do some research.
are u guys coming back on youtube?
That's pretty bad.
1994 Best supporting Actor .Tommy lee Jones wins Over Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goethe in Schindlers list. WTF!
Rocky is a very enjoyable film, but it definitely didn't deserve best picture or best director. especially best director.
Marty was 1955 and On the Waterfront was 1954, and Brando won for OTW. Love the show but a little more prep like actually having the list of winners and losers on set would help!
This is the first time I have ever commented on a video.
All I can say is THANK YOU!!!
I have never cared for Forrest Gump and have never really
understood it's popularity.
Ahhhhh well played my friend....touche'. You do have some good points & a very valid arguement. Duely noted :)
I haven't seen An American in Paris, but I know Sunset Boulevard is one of the greates films ever, and deserved to winevery Oscar Nom it got and then some.
Loved the episode, gotta agree on Forrest Gump beating out Pulp Fiction as biggest travesty (And Quiz Show was nominated as was Four Weddings and a Funeral).
Also gotta say another big travesty by the Academy was Hitchcock never winning a Best Director award despite...I think it was Rebecca?...winning Best Picture.
