Hey guys, how about the latest Terminator Genisys? It was unfortunate that they had leaked the plot twist with John Connor himself getting corrupted. I would've liked to have seen him do something so brutal that he'd be fighting to regain his humanity.
The guys touched on the reason in the conversation: in T2, there was HOPE, and in fact the entire film revolved around an attempt to change the future, to prevent the nuclear holocaust. In T3, Judgement Day became INEVITABLE. No hope of stopping it, no matter what they did. That was what made T3 so bleak, the characters were shown to be powerless to change the future and were forced to watch it unfold. The catchphrase in T2, iirc, was "No future but what we make for ourselves."
I agree 100% with Edwin about Terminator Salvation and how the post-apocalyptic world looks and feel absolutly nothing like the one we saw in T1 and T2. I had always wanted to see a Terminator movie about the Future War the way Cameron had envisioned it, and Salvation certainly was not that movie. I hope that when they make a new Terminator movie, they dismiss Salvation as part of the Terminator canon.
Glad you guys got around to the Terminator movies. This was a great show, I really enjoyed the debate between Edwin and Mike over Salvation. I'm glad you guys liked T3, I do to. Not as much as the first 2 movies but its still good. I do agree with Edwin that one of the weakness of T3 is the humor. The action was great, Nick Stahl was good as John and I also loved the ending.
I havent seen Salvation yet, I'll have to find out if I agree with Edwin or Mike when I do.
I'll never forgive the writer of an article who spoiled Schwarzenegger's role as the protector in T2 or anyone for letting that out of the bag. That could have been a fantastic reveal but the studio opted for safe marketing.
Thanks. I feel the same way. Fighting with Mike really wears you down, especially when he can't explain the Kyle Reese plot hole, but at least it makes for great TV drama.
SkyNet may have thought that killing Kyle Reese would not change anything. I mean, would they really expect the world to "transform" around them? It had been prophesized that John Connor was going to be the end of them. They used Kyle Reese as bait to get to John Connor. As long as Kyle is alive, Connor will be looking for him. It is Connor that is important, not Reese.
Great show guys! Probably the best one. I agree 100% that the first terminator feels like a horror film, that "fixing the eyeball" scene still creeps me out. ( yes the fx are dated ) thanks for another cool show.
It was very good. I thought your analyses were very well thought out, as usual. Actually, when I suggested you guys should mention the film of Cameron, I was referring to the ones that are generally ignored or forgotten I mean, you have The Abyss, his first prestige piece. You have True Lies, the black sheep of his filmography. And of course you have Titanic, the second prestige piece and second black sheep.
You got it! In first one, he says it's only safe to move at night, but in Salvation, he says "Daylight is safer as the HKs have night vision! I wish someone watched the previous films in the series before writing the script.
James Cameron is one amazing director a visionary, he knows everything about film making not only directing but also about special effects , editing, writing he can even do the score of his films I remember I saw on tv an interview to Stan Wiston, when he was working on the T1 squeleton he said that a lot of the ideas used to create that cames from James Cameron and it was the same from the guy who wrote the score of the first Terminator and I find that awesome
i think there was a lot more to it than arnold just reading the script and liking it. i think someone in his orbit talked him in to doing it. it may have been joe weider, but i'm going from memory.
I'd still prefer the first film to the second. Arnold's carerr trajectory made his character inevitably a star role, rather than an actual character. I didn't find any of his terminator's comments on humanity remotely believable: they were contrived and crowbar'd in!. It's an impressive sequel, but I agree with Mike. It's more of a collection of set pieces than the tight believable original, that relied on plot, characterisation and then added the action.
I fully agree that one of the main problems with Salvation, was the lack of the total darkness seen in the original movie. We're led to believe that the nuclear war decimated the world's population almost completely & yet a surprising number of people exist & yes with perfect hair! They also seem to be extremely well equipped & not scratching an existence in the holocaust. Recently, there's been a TV series called Revolution-set 15 years after all power was cut off. Again the believability of this proposed future is a bit shaky as everybody looks incredibly clean, they all have perfect teeth & hair & most of the characters look like they've got all their clothes from the newest shopping mall. The Walking Dead & 2 TV movies from the 80s eg The Day After & Threads by the BBC, at least tried to go for some realism from this viewpoint.
@metfilmguy2009 Thank you for watching the show. I hope you'll continue to enjoy the show. We don't have the largest fanbase, but the people who like the show are really loyal, which is something we appreciate and why we continue to do the show.
I agree with Mike Foltz on T2, but he is completely wrong on Terminator 4. The film didn't know who it was about. It suffered from a false sense of self-importance and completely routine action scenes.
How can anyone have ANYTHING against Terminator 2: Judgment Day?? It's proved to be one of the greatest sequels ever made - if not the greatest sequel.
The point about killing Kyle Reese in Salvation... Skynet had limited information. It knew John Connor was born to Sarah Connor and only her rough location, which is why it tried to eliminate all the Sarah Connors in the phone book. Stands to reason that no one but Sarah and John knew who his father was, not really something you tell anyone or record digitally given the future...
I completely agree with Edwin, I was so excited to see an entire movie showing the vision of the future we only get glimses of in the other films and I hated Terminator Salvation for many other reasons.
Great show as always! The first two terminator movies were part of my childhood and do have a special place in the warping of my imagination. Was not expecting much from the third. was not crazy about it but i did not hate it either. Now Salvation was a big disapointment to me just for the fact that we were told that we would see the actual War with the machines and the movie clearly said that the war was over and we lost. There was alot of untapped possibilities there.
loved the show. good debate. thanks for the hard work of editing in all those images. i know its a lot of work, but I, for one, appreciated it so thanks for that. really looking forward to show which examines the movies that really messed you up as kids...!
the criticisms of salvation are true but i still enjoyed it. I think it sets up a next terminator movie well but I suspect a lot of my reason for liking salvation lies in its adaptation of themes from SCC, so it gave me some closure
If you check out this show and our one on Alien, we covered most of his films. We do plan on doing a mini-review on Avatar in the near future, so look out for it.
@ethansloan We hope to upload a show every two weeks. At the very least, we hope to get one month up. It's really hard because everyone has weird schedules to get together and tape. And to watch the films does take some time.
The terminator infiltrator in the first film (in the future) isn't the first human looking terminator. The humans already have guard dogs to scent out such infiltrators.. No plot hole
The Terminator is the best of the bunch. The terminator is accually a threatening force. And the relationship between Kyle and Sarah is nice. The Reese character is what carries the movie in the acting department. T2 does not have the same brutal feeling...more of a mainstream big budget blockbuster.
Eric and Jeff posted a list on the CineFiles blog. I think Mike and I will be doing so as well soon. I'm just a little burned out - this Terminator episode took forever to edit with all the screenshots. Also, check out the Facebook page. I believe Eric also responded to the worst of the year as well.
@cinefiles if you read Arnold Schwarzenegger book he stated that he did not want to be a killer anymore and Linda Hamilton said in order for her to come back to the sequel could you make her insane and a heroine!!!!! oh by the way Linda Hampton did not want to come back for the third one because she said her story with Sarah Connor was done and it was nothing more she could had done with the character
@ thecinefiles - Thanks for your reply, it's great hearing from you. I've got to be honest and say I've watched loads of your videos and have found them all very entertaining. I'm a film maker myself and I appreciate the views of those who have the same passion and love of film that I do. Your videos also alllow me to better myself as a film maker because of your thoughts and views for which I'd like to say thank you :)
Can you guys PLEASE do a video about the films of James Cameron? Since Avatar is making a smash hit in theaters, people have become interested in his past films.
T1&2 revolutionary. T3 insulting rehash of T2 that completely ignores parts of T2 and pisses on Cameron's canon. It was made just so Arnold could pay for his run for governor. T4 ridiculous plot holes (how can SkyNet know who Kyle and Connor are?) but at least it tried something different. Ending should have been: Connor gets an artificial heart. That would make a good ironic philosophical point. Good discussion btw. How bout a show on Mad Max or neo noir SF (Blade Runner, Dark City etc)?
CisforCock He's already born and will continue to live in a new alternate future. 3 pretty much pisses all over #2, kind of like Alien 3 does on Aliens.
Khan1670 That doesnt seem logical to me. I know there is a theory about the alternate future which Cameron offered as explanation, but I dont buy that, so for me #3 saved #2. #4 sucks, though.
But T3 was corny jokes and then a really dark ending. It didn't really earn the right to completely undo the whole point of the Cameron Terminator films.
Call me egotistical, (which is rude) but don't accuse someone of ripping off without proof or examples. It's not professional and could do damage to someone's reputation. I'm not a fan of Roth and don't care to listen to speak for 2 hours or Tarantino (who I like) as never lets anyone else speak. I do like Wright, but haven't listened to any of his tracks. My job is provide info on films. I don't want to come off a know-it-all. I have passion for film, which I try to share.

I take Edwin's point about 'Tolal Recall' & 'Salvation'. It's close enough a plot point to be a legitimate point.
At the same time, not only did the people look neat and clean but they were still using technology even though they were at war with it.
It was Gale Ann Hurd (not Linda Hamilton) who owned the rights and sold them off.
i was so surprised at their reaction at T3. I personally thought that was a cash in movie, a horrible michael bay-esque level of stupidness.
The point about killing Kyle Reese in Salvation... Skynet had limited information. It knew John Connor was born to Sarah Connor and only her rough location, which is why it tried to eliminate all the Sarah Connors in the phone book. No, thank you for watching. Be sure to let me know what you think of The Alien show.
T1 & T2, nothing else is Canon, done.
loved the show. good debate. thanks for the hard work of editing in all those images. i know its a lot of work, but I, for one, appreciated it so thanks for that.

I don't hate salvation but saying it's better than T2 is like saying Ashton Kutcher is better actor than Marlon Brando !!
I loved the episode. Loved how you guys go into a heated debate about Salvation.
@ethansloan We hope to upload a show every two weeks. At the very least, we hope to get one month up. It's really hard because everyone has weird schedules to get together and tape. And to watch the films does take some time.
I'm no economist, but if you consider inflation District 9 30 milion budget is also amazingly low for a sci-fi with such amazing efects.
Do they ever listen...
@dafmurray Thanks for taking the time to write. I think you can only write some many words, or You Tube won't accept it.
The terminator infiltrator in the first film (in the future) isn't the first human looking terminator. The humans already have guard dogs to scent out such infiltrators.. No plot hole

They took the story from two Harlan Ellison OUTER LIMITS episodes.
SOLIDER, DEMON WITH THE GLASS HAND.
terminator 1 & 2 is my favorite movies of all time !!!
I love the Cinefiles!!!!! You guys kick flipping arse!!!!!! :)
The slides are awesome!
T1 was good, T2 was twice as good, T3 was almost as good as the first one. But it had a much larger budget. T4 was crap, crap, crap!
come back....please!
@misternonconformist
Thanks for the comments - I'm still shocked at how much Mike liked this one.
Edwin now wanted by the police since his mustache came in
Eric and Jeff posted a list on the CineFiles blog. I think Mike and I will be doing so as well soon. I'm just a little burned out - this Terminator episode took forever to edit with all the screenshots.

Terminator: 8.5/10
Terminator 2: 9/10
Terminator 3: 5/10
Terminator Salvation: 3.5/10

Exactly! I would love to know how the resistance became so organized with submarines and fighter jets.

Can you guys PLEASE do a video about the films of James Cameron?

Good discussion btw.
How bout a show on Mad Max or neo noir SF (Blade Runner, Dark City etc)?
How can dislike Salvation so much, but like #3 which pretty much invalidates #2
which is arguably the best in the series?????
To be honest, #3 saved #2, because if #3 didnt happen, how could John Connor be born?
CisforCock
He's already born and will continue to live in a new alternate future. 3 pretty much pisses all over #2, kind of like Alien 3 does on Aliens.
Khan1670
That doesnt seem logical to me. I know there is a theory about the alternate future which Cameron offered as explanation, but I dont buy that, so for me #3 saved #2. #4 sucks, though.
How 'bout a show on Herzog - Kinski? That should be crazy fun discussion.
Terminator: 9/10
Terminator 2: 9.5/10
Terminator 3: 8/10
Salvation: Who Cares?
T3 was grim? Right.
Very cool. Thanks a lot for the vids.
I gotta second that request for a Werner Herzog show
But T3 was corny jokes and then a really dark ending. It didn't really earn the right to completely undo the whole point of the Cameron Terminator films.

What's Mike been smoking?
Better drain that lizard!
How about a year in review episode? with your top 10 etc.
Lance Henriksen as a T-800, I wouldn't mind.
Salvation could have been a great movie. The material was there for the makings, but the filmmakers failed to follow-up on Jim Cameron's blueprints. The PG-13 rating didn't help matters either!
@Hallinilla9 The ending was.
salvation is good. but the third one was pretty bad on first viewing, but the ending was very memorable and well written.the ending of t3 almost made the unoriginal and plain action movie parts worth while
thank you for posting

(sigh) what sort of 'resistance' would they be using if they had sticks and stones? Not all movie 'natives' or people at a technological disadvantage can fight like the Ewoks.
cinefiles, love your videos, T1 and T2 are awesome...
Switched off as soon as he said there us merit in T3.
I would like to see another $6.5 Sci-fi film like Terminator being made.
Looking forward to the next episode about movies that scared you guys as kids.
It's very simple. The Terminator saga ending after T2.
@metfilmguy2009
Thanks. Hope you'll check out some more of the shows and visit the Facebook page. Look for us.
I would like to say that T1 was made on $6.5 million dollars. Now that is a lot of bang for your buck. Now how many sci-fi films can claim to be that good and made for so little money. Now I would would like to see more low budget sci-fi films like this one.
IS HOLLYWOOD LISTENING????
Edwin's impressions are horiffic
Remember the Terminator rip off Trancers. That was quite good.
"T3 a strong entry into the series" and two members of this panel praising salvation (one saying it was better than T2)... These people either are trolls or just fools
@MrDamian12345 I grew it as a dare - it's gone.
I prefer Terminator: Salvation to Teminator 3. To me, T3 shouldn't even exist. Terminator Salvation works, and it's a nice addition to the Terminator series. Michael's right.
Do you really like Arnold's thumbs up as he goes into the thing at the end of T2. cheesy as hell
i also totaly agree - edwin is totaly right here !
T3 and especially T4 was terrible. It wasn't even a great popcorn flick. You don't make a popcorn flick to a dark series like Terminator. 3 and Resurrection should be enough to tell you that :p
hey man you look A LOT like Gallagher (the guy that smashes watermelons)
Completely agree with everything Edwin said on this one.
Edward Furlong was great in the second movie. He was just right, cocky, cynical, and rebellious.
Nick Stahl on the other hand was a whiny emo sissy.
But there's also another plothole in the Terminator that I think is a VERY big problem. I don't know if too many people know about it. Now, it's easy to keep track of something with a chronological timeline. But, it is because of Skynet that Kyle Reese was sent back in time to protect John Connor's mother, unknowningly becoming his father. Essentially, it is because of Skynet that John Connor exists. Not exactly a happy one and it kinda erases everything that happened. But, maybe if they made an alternate John or a John-look-alike appear in the now normal world, it wouldn't be like that. Just my thoughts :p
Yeah, it's not a major issue as most probably wouldn't even be aware of it or think about it when watching Terminator 2.
Foltz hit's the nail on the head! "Rise of the Machines" and "Salvation" are popcorn flicks. Popcorn flick being a big budget, mindless entertaining film geared towards a mass audience. They don't really bring anything new to the table they are simply meant to entertain fans of the series. Whereas T1 and T2 are literally works of art and were original concepts at the time.
No! Absolutely not. No. NO!
T4 was a turkey! It was a bad movie! It was stupid and boring. They need to dump the time travel angle and killing off someone who will be important in the future and find a new gimmick.
