By the way, I LOVE that you fellas all like "Beneath"! I completely agree, while flawed, there's something very powerful and iconic about that peculiar movie.
In my opinion, after the epic brilliance of the original POA, Conquest is the best. To me, that was like "The Empire Strikes Back" of the Apes series due to its bleakness and pessimistic overtones the movie gave. How the Apes revolted against Man was supremely haunting. Admittedly, I couldn't stop thinking about the film days after I saw it. Very few movies have that effect on me!
Edwin is totally correct about the darker version of "Conquest" as seen on the blu-ray disk. It is the more preferred version in my opinion. It may not be a happy ending, but it really packs a wallop! If you haven't yet seen the Uncut version of "Conquest of the POA" yet, I highly advise it for all fans of the series.
Beneath the Planet of The Apes (1970) portrayed Ape society as much more brutal - just like humans! I liked it just as much as the original POA of 1968. James Franciscus had appeared in a 1959 Twilight Zone epidsode as a submarine lieutenant.
Really good episode you guys, too bad Jeff couldnt be there but the 3 of you did a nice job in discussing the original Ape movie series. I loved watching all the movies when I was a teenager, its been years since I saw any of them, but I may have to get them on DVD finally thanks to this show. Love the first movie, Beneath was fun, I liked Escape, Conquest was decent and Battle was the weakest. I will have to see the uncut versions as Edwin suggested. Great show you guys, thanks alot!
Thanks! We get some viewers, but people forget to rate and subscribe. In addition, we love comments and video responses! We might not have time to reply to them all, but we do watch and read them all.
you guys forgot to mention that the original POTA film was co-written by Michael Wilson. A writer who was black listed, put some of those experiences in the film. Ironically, he wrote the adaption of The Bridge on the River Kwai, another Boulle novel, but because he was blacklisted, Wilson didn't get credited in the film.
Great episode, guys! Hate to sound pedantic but Pierre Boulle did not write Les Diaboliques or Vertigo. That was Pierre Boileau working with his writing partner Thomas Narcejac. They also wrote Eyes Without A Face. Pierre Boulle wrote Bridge On the River Kwai.
@cinefiles Not yet. But from what you guys described, it sounds awesome! By chance, do you happen to know if the Blu-ray version is available on Netflix?
I still think that the ideal show has three members of the team. That doesn't mean the same three all the time, as each of the four bring something unique to the discussions. Three just means the conversation is more focused and there isn't the rush to get everyone included within the episode length. The conversations flow in a more relaxed way with three. Again I would not like to see anyone leave the show.
Glad you enjoyed the show. It was a lot of fun to do and I hope you enjoyed all of the images. I thought they would help clarify points. I haven't enjoyed a PT Anderson since Boogie Nights. There Will Be Blood had some great moments, but overall if missed the mark.
The closest Twilight Zone analog to the first Planet of the Apes film is actually "People Are Alike All Over" with Roddy McDowall. The Burgess Meredith episode mentioned, "Time Enough At Last," also has some parallels in that the main character comes to miss all the fellow humans he had once sought to avoid, but the McDowall episode is much closer to Taylor's character arc.
This is my first comment, and I have to gush a bit first. I completely enjoy listening to you episodes. I have always loved films, but learned to appreciate the whole process of film making and history after I took two History of Cinema courses in college. Now for the only negative thing: Why are the episodes only about 30 minutes? I WANT MORE PLEASE LOL.
Was a Big Fan of the POA Series as a Kid & Teenager. Even made my High School girlfriend watch the complete series in a marathon sitting (Sorry Mira where ever you are). The Tim Burton film was OK, but would have loved to see the Oliver Stone version with ARNOLD.
hey great show guys. i thought i was the only one who sat through that whole sci-fi marathon, but i guess not. I also had the benefit of not knowing the ending of the original. blew me away. oh and if you guys are out of subjects. i don't know how you feel about Paul Thomas Anderson...
Tim Burton's helming the Remake of POTA was like re-doing "The 10 Commandments"...So hard to ressurect a Legend such as this. And the remake Ending especially...HOW could ANYONE top the original ending????
I remember Don Pedro Colleyas one of the important mutants in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes"...i also remember him in THX-1138...By the way...Don Pedro is the name of a Brandy in Mexico. lol
@cinefiles No problem... I just couldn't let that slip! They're pretty different kinds of writers I think. I'm also named Pierre, there's a whole bunch of us in France... By the way I think I disagree on "Escape from the Planet of the Apes"; it blew me away the first time I watched it (I don't know how it would fare if I watched it again today). It's probably my second fave after the original. But I can't remember much from Conquest or Battle either, I couldn't really get into them...
I love watching your threads on films I have seen and generally agree with the views raised! Good to see you cover British films like Play Dirty and Get Carter and The Long Good Friday. PS Are you aware of a fellow Brit who is a great critic called Mark Kermode?
It's just occurred to me that the 'twist' at the end of the 2001 Tim Burton version might relate to an extent to the 'Escape From The.....' plot contrivance of Cornelius, Zira and Milo being able to find, work, pilot and travel back in time via the spaceship. Teed apparently must have done something similar to feature in the twist ending (otherwise it makes no sense).
@CesMan83 Don't know, but I do know that it was recently released as a single disc for around $10. It's a lot different film. It's very violent and adds quite a lot to the film. You can see why they made the next film so kid friendly.
i really enjoyed ur review of this series.... the first planet of the apes movie is one my favorite movies :) i look forward to seeing u reviewing Rise of Planet of the Apes and Dawn of Planet of the Apes... keep it up
Thanks. I'll try to make a note of this soon. I think you can understand why I got this messed up. The names are almost the same! Anyway, thanks for clearing this up.
NO NO NO Dr. Milo found Taylors spaceship while using a magnet on a boat that attached itself to his ship and with a turning wheel and a cow he retrieved Taylors ship to find out it was missing a device or something and when Brett crashes later on he takes that device out of his wrecked ship to fix Taylors so in the events leading up to the bomb going off Zira, cornellius and Ziras nephew from the first movie go to Milo and are shot at by gorillas killing Zira's nephew. They escape the bomb moments later to be shot across the stars and that's when escape from the planet of the apes is set up. Milo explains this before he dies in escape and you can see it happen in BOOM comics issue 3 or maybe 4 of their planet of the apes comic series.
One of these days. There's so many topics, so little time. We're trying to be a little diverse and cover some cool stuff. I especially think that a show, which was just taped, is gonna be a poplar one. From viewing the rough edit, it turned out pretty cool as things get really heated. I think this show in question will also get a lot of comments from the fans as well. You'll know it when you see it.
Great show, guys. I have been watching this stuff for months now and just subscribed per Edwin's request. Could you possibly do a Charlie Kaufman episode (Malkovich, Adaptation, Human Behavior, Eternal Sunshine, Synechdoche) or a Christopher Nolan episode? Post more vids! Also, where is the apocalypse episode posted?
Just saw Planets of the Apes again, and I'm surprised you didn't mention the whole faith/creationism vs. science/evolution theme. Which is like the main theme IMO. Didn't notice anything communism related though.
Even when I first saw this film in late 1960s or early 1970s as a 5 year old I realized that Taylor was not an asshole, he was a cynical person protesting the illegitimate, evil, psychopathic, violent culture that he came from, and which we still live in. . He was right, the Elite Class who where and are psychopaths destroyed his Earth unnecessarily in a nuclear war. Taylor left home for something better, but Rod Serling brought Taylor back to Earth, that he may witness the end of his race, in a cruel twist. George Taylor (Charleston Heston) the only man with a conscience, has his morality destroyed in the end. This is the true world we live in, is the message of Planet of the Apes and Twilight Zone writer Rod Serling..
planet of apes is still one of my top films BUT these guys are astronauts? but they cant read the stars to the know they are earth? sorry , just a massive hole in otherwise great film. ty for posting this rave.
ocay you said leave a comment well here goes i am not really a big planet of the apes person but still i do like your show alot and only discovered it a few days ago which i think is a crime but in my defense as much as i love you tube i think it needs to expose really good shows like this one more
Garbageday is right, you fellas are mispronouncing Pierre Boulle's name. It isn't Pierre "Boo-lay". In French, the 'e' at the end is silent unless an accent mark is above it. The correct pronunciation is "Boouhl".
The first one was a classic. The second one was a turkey. The remake was a turkey. Just watch the first one. The rest of them just weren't that good. I like the show, keep up the good work.
I had this sit in my watch later playlist for like 5 years. Never too late.
My three favorite Cinefiles members talking about the Apes series? Awesome.
By the way, I LOVE that you fellas all like "Beneath"! I completely agree, while flawed, there's something very powerful and iconic about that peculiar movie.

Love all five Planet of the Apes movies. They're still my favorites after all these years.
I hate that I didn't discover Cinefiles until now. Love it!
Really good episode you guys, too bad Jeff couldnt be there but the 3 of you did a nice job in discussing the original Ape movie series.

Excellent discussion / review!
Thanks! We get some viewers, but people forget to rate and subscribe. In addition, we love comments and video responses! We might not have time to reply to them all, but we do watch and read them all.
Great show guys. Nice archive footage.
you guys forgot to mention that the original POTA film was co-written by Michael Wilson. A writer who was black listed, put some of those experiences in the film. You guys need more views, you deserve it.

Not yet. But from what you guys described, it sounds awesome! By chance, do you happen to know if the Blu-ray version is available on Netflix?
Awesome episode. Glad you showed a still of Nova.

Some of your programs are very rewatchable. Well i always rewatch anything POTA. But it was good and fun to see it again.
Greetings from Sweden!
Glad you enjoyed the show. It was a lot of fun to do and I hope you enjoyed all of the images. I thought they would help clarify points.
I haven't enjoyed a PT Anderson since Boogie Nights. There Will Be Blood had some great moments, but overall if missed the mark.
Cinefiles was the first channel, of many, that I ever subscribed on :)
The original POTA is maybe my favorite sci fi ever.
Thank you for the kind words. We hope you'll continue to enjoy the batch of new episodes coming up.

Hey guys - great job. I think I've seen nearly all of your shows. Where's a Coen brothers show?
This is my first comment, and I have to gush a bit first. I completely enjoy listening to you episodes. I have always loved films, but learned to appreciate the whole process of film making and history after I took two History of Cinema courses in college.
Now for the only negative thing: Why are the episodes only about 30 minutes? I WANT MORE PLEASE LOL.
The first one was really good and I give CONQUEST a C+.
The guys did a Kubrick show without me, and the tape library at the studio lost one of the tapes. It will need to located or redone. Stay tuned.
Thanks. We'll be adding a lot more images to future shows.
hey great show guys.
i thought i was the only one who sat through that whole sci-fi marathon, but i guess not.
I also had the benefit of not knowing the ending of the original. blew me away.
oh and if you guys are out of subjects. i don't know how you feel about Paul Thomas Anderson...
please do a mini-review on Burton's remake of the first film.
Tim Burton's helming the Remake of POTA was like re-doing "The 10 Commandments"...So hard to ressurect a Legend such as this. And the remake Ending especially...HOW could ANYONE top the original ending????
Awesome! I've been hoping you guys would do a discussion on the Alien series. I look foward to it.
I remember Don Pedro Colleyas one of the important mutants in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes"...i also remember him in THX-1138...By the way...Don Pedro is the name of a Brandy in Mexico. lol

I gonna try to salvage it. The sound is distorted, but I can try.
Another great episode.

i liked all of them alot. but my two favorites were the first one and the third one.
Franklin Shaffner is definitely one of my favorite directors. Cool show.
Good Reviews! "PLANET of the APES"/"2001: A SPACE ODDYSEY"~The BEST Sci-Fi Films of the 1960's.
where did these guys go?
I really wanted to hear the Burton review as well..
Pierre Boulle didn't write Vertigo but Pierre Boileau.
"Rate our video. 5 Stars!"
SOLD!
@CesMan83 Have you seen the uncut version of Conquest that was just recently released on blu-ray? It's even bleaker!
The guy in the hat looks just like Gallagher!
@Ian Dunbar moonlight feels right..
How about doing a show about the films of Ridley Scott?
Good episode!
you guys should review the spiderman trilogy and your thoughts on the reboot
I think Eric's favourite phrase is 'On the nose'.
pretty good show
20:56,the ratts wyatts and ricardo montibion.heh heh!
....Didn't know they did that!

Funny, same thing happened to me when I saw Topic Gun. No, I'm not kidding. I really did hate it and walk out.
You guys confused Pierre Boulle with Pierre Boileau
i have just subscribed to your channel
please do more new reviews for; iron man 2, robin hood and the new nightmare
:)
I'm leaving a thoughtless snarky comment.
Charlie Kaufman! That is a good idea for an episode radiohead71886!
planet of apes is still one of my top films BUT these guys are astronauts? but they cant read the stars to the know they are earth? sorry , just a massive hole in otherwise great film. ty for posting this rave.

Rod Serling did not write the screenplay. His screenplay was rejected.
THANK GOD BROLIN WASN'T JAMES BOND!
@amaxamon Thank you.
Why do great films spawn bad sequals and bad remakes and bad spin offs. How about answering that question guys?
James Gregory played General Ursus.
Me So Crazee! yes
@miikefan It could happen. Please visit the FB page and make a request.
The first one was a classic. The second one was a turkey. The remake was a turkey.
Just watch the first one. The rest of them just weren't that good.
I like the show, keep up the good work.
Actully Edwin you are wrong, John Chambers was brought on to do the makeup after they did the makeup test and passed the test.
Sometimes I draw mustaches on things I see in the newspaper.
Stop looking like Gallagher!
@amaxamon As do you! Sorry!
Can anybody explain....Taylor smoking inside the spaceship? its illogical, jaja
actually, actually, actually, actually, actually.....
one problem. chambers did not d the test, bill nye, the typical make-up guy of 20th century did the test.
original, beneath, and conquest are the best... escape just didnt do anything for me... and the final film is just aweful
Pierre BOULLE's name is pronounced "BOOL", not "BOOLLAY".
The first one was a classic and the rest were pretty much crap.
I highly disagree with you - check out the show for my reasons why.
The Tim Burton POTA had a weak plot. No big surprises.
The first one was great, The remake sucked and only the four one was any good.
And the remake SUCKED!!!!
