Unfortunately, the cost of refitting these aircraft have cost more than building it from scratch, due to the removal of existing components and wiring to add updated and custom components (to meet FAA requirements, communication, computing equipment, etc...).
The cost was fixed so additional expense is on Boeing's dime (they took a bath).

Overheating problems? I wonder how other users of the 747 overcame that problem, while flying with darker colors on the underside of their planes?
A standard 747-8 doesn't have an overheating problem regardless of color. Most of the costs, and this possible overheating if real, would be due to the extensive and complicated modifications done to the basic hull after it left Everett.
Over heating from what? I would suspect any exterior heat gain would come from the sun. As I doubt Air Force One will spend much time flying upside down this shouldn’t be a problem. The air temperature at altitude will be around -40° F anyway. Sounds like more of the misinformation we live with daily!
- Agreed, sounds like rubbish to me. If the dark was on top of the fuselage, certainly (IIRC, Hugh Hefner’s “Big Bunny” DC-9 had some issues, being painted all black). Underside - plenty of airlines operate with dark undersides, in part because it hides the dirt and grime that accumulates on the belly (and you’d be surprised just how much accumulates down there).
It's really not a matter of overheating. It's a matter of it being identifiable from the surface. Gotta have it white or grey.
@@MrHabs - That is somewhat more believable, but whether it’s white, grey, light blue, whatever - it’s still a 747 and still fairly visible when at lower altitudes.
My nephew just got selected to be an Airforce One crew member. He has to be trained for a year then he goes on board

That scheme goes back to 1962. Raymond Loewy, working with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, designed it for the Boeing 707 # 26000, the first jet transport designed and built specifically for a POTUS.

The RUclips video "Boeing Regrets AF1 Contract" from 6 months ago has good info on AF1. At 2':26 to end has a 747-8 landing and taxi in with livery similar to current AF1. Currently, expected delivery is mid-decade. Hopefully, we will have better choices than a 78 and 82 year olds.
If you can find someone who is as intelligent and business smart as President Trump, and loves this country as much as he does i'll agree with you. However i do not see anyone on the horizon who fits the bill.

You mentioned the cost of the maintenance and flight manuals. These aircraft require a huge library of manuals. I imagine that with the additional features of this aircraft the library is much bigger than the average military aircraft.

Flight manuals and support equipment often are far more expensive than the original aircraft.
@@olddog103 As far as I am concerned as post Iraq war vet as well as being a Navy Marine A&P most air craft even in the military should all have on line manuals as well as published fatigue and recall data accompanied by service numbers. All civilian aircraft MFGs should have on line manuals as well as failure points too. There is so much data missing from commercial aviation it is sickening. Just think about how easy it would be if the auto MFGs of the world would create a QR card for all makes of models of consumer cars and light trucks so that when ya go for service ya hand the card to the service vendor and poof no more 50 questions standing there at a service counter. All the data is right there on that card about the car including past service history. Wouldn't that be something? I'm a real aviation engineer and a deep thinking one. Part of why Boeing and I parted ways on bad terms 5 years ago. Every mistake they made I already predicted it years before it actually happened.

I like the idea of keeping the old livery in honor of Jackie Kennedy and her sacrifice for this country. Just add a few new touches. Personally I'd like to see a row of gold stars down the sides - that kind of stuff.

I thought they didn’t have to build the two replacements because they were Twp 747’s that a Russian airline canceled an order, so the6 were available . They just have to outfit them and put security devices in them , correct?
Correct BUT the problem is that have to disassemble a lot of the plane to install all the extra equipment !!!
it would of actually been cheaper to build fresh ones i believe the problem at the moment is space for all the extra wiring into an existing setup
Wiring is installed while a plane is being built. Since so much new wiring is required, they have to basically rebuild parts of the planes. Brand new planes likely would have been cheaper and faster to configure.

The current aircraft can’t stay airborne “indefinitely”. The engines need oil after several days of continuous use.
Do they tend to burn oil after flying for several days??
And the refueling equipment was only used a couple of times since the 747 AF-1 took flight- it has officially been scrapped to help with other related weight and complexity problems.

@fredericrike5974 actually the refueling option has never been used on those aircraft while they were Air Force one. They may have possibly used it when the president was on board, though there's no information to be found to confirm that.
The reason they've never used the in-flight refueling option, is because the Air Force and the Secret Service is extremely concerned about the dangers involved with mid-air refueling with such large aircraft and the president on board

It started with Trump's domestic AF1 flights after the drone attack on the Iranian General in Iraq. The security measure of no AF1 on transponders for the majority of the flights started on Trump's watch during March 2020 and continues with Biden. Even Trump's last flight on AF1 on 20th January 2021 was not showing as AF1 on the transponder.

Trump's paint scheme was rejected. The two replacement 747s for current AF1 will fly in a paint scheme chosen by Biden. It is a slightly lighter Blue than current AF1.

The plane isn't getting the in-flight refueling option. It's on the current planes but has never been used in the 30 years that they have been flying.
That's good. The old Air Force one is well put together and gets good mileage. It's always good to have the capability to refuel in mid-air.

My understanding is that the current AF1 has two full kitchens, not just areas to warm up preprepared meals.
The new AF-1 will have white engine shrouds instead of the dark blue for thermal reasons.
The AF-1 should be equipped with state-of-art laser-based “active defense system” and flight capability into outer space command and control center.
They do have a missile blinding laser defense like the one developed by Israel for all their airliners.
I think Capin Kirk is one those mods as we speak,,,, I'll get back to ya on what else we cook up.. Raytheon is adding some splendid ideas even me Capin Kirk I didn't think. Scratch that last transmission... Joe Biden won't even be able to work the coffee maker we are all making sure of it..

The presidential jet has to be by necessity completely unarmed because any enemy nation could use shooting it down as a defensive action. ...and they'd be right. Flying an armed jet over their territory would be seen as an act of aggression.
You don't need that if the plane can jam missiles from a distance,but it has to be the best jamming equipment to date.

You know then President Clinton insisted the real Air Force One doesn't have an escape pod (like in the movie) but even the President is on a need-to-know basis regarding Top Secret sorts of things so the feature can't be completely ruled out.

I find it difficult to believe that some dark paint on the underbelly could or would cause cooling issues for the plane. Dark blue on the engine cowls causing some sort of heat issues seems highly unlikely to me.
Way back when, United and British Airlines had their livery dark gray on top and dark blue on the bottom half. That did cause issues with cooling when their planes were in warm to hot areas around the globe.
AF1 will have twin APUs and three A/C Cooling Packs. Those twin A/C packs will generate somewhere between 180-360 KVA and supply more than adequate air volume to run multiple A/C packs and keep the interior and all electronics cool. The engine cowlings are made of honeycomb, and Kevlar typically. There isn't much underneath them that can be affected or compromised.
I worked on 747s for years. I find those mentioned issues to be Red Herrings more than anything else. The current livery was Jackie Kennedy's creation. It's time for an update and futuristic livery. The current livery is about 60 years old. It's time for a new livery! ❤

I'm italian and not involved in any internal problem of the United States. I believe the usual old livery allow you to understand immediately you stand in front of United States of America and not a commercial plane, because it is an historical representation is going on for decades on different planes as well as VC-32 currently in use. New supposed colors gives me more a feeling of a fancy private jet that perfectly pair Trump everyday attitude of flying, but american people do not care to much about history and, especially these days, do not understand history cannot be changed, it's history written with blood on white stones past times, learn from it and try to make a better future. Better future is not granted must be conquered with good will and respectable ideas
