The Next Presidential Jet: The New $5B "Biden Force One"

- Air Force One is one of the most recognizable call signs in the world. It refers to any US military aircraft carrying the serving US President. For over 30 years, this has been associated with two modified 747-200 aircraft.
These are set to change soon, though, with two new 747-8 aircraft under development. Obama ordered these, Trump made several changes and savings, but it will be President Biden who gets to fly first on them.
What do we know so far about these exciting new aircraft?

Airbus aren't stupid. They declined application because they knew it would never happen. The US president in a non American built jet would never fly😂
Agree lol
@Libturds Suck surely it should be the best jet available that fits the jobs
@Libturds Suck yeah I know but for America it shouldn’t be fair enough it should be the best which is why I say airforce one should be a Cessna 172
gilbert It was because the Air Force chooses planes by specifications like range, floor area, and maximum takeoff weight. The politicians who decide what the Air Force buys chose based on American jobs.
Going by Boeing's recent record, he would likely have flown more!
No takers? I'll see myself out...
$5 Billion is the total PROGRAM COST, not the cost of the airplanes alone. Program cost is airframes, the modifications but also maintenance for a specified period of time. The Presidential aircraft are maintained on a 25% duty cycle for enhanced safety. Lets say a part is certified for 10,000 cycles on a commerical plane that part is replaced on the Presidential fleet at 2500 cycles. That enhanced safety regime is part of the Program Cost.
Finally a fact. Thank you
Don't let facts get in the way of a good antigovernmental rant by morons.
Thank you for this, so many people think that the government is wasting tax money on useless projects because the media told them so.
Literally said that in the video...
Still you can build an Aircraft carrier for around 5 billion.
Air Force One should definitely keep the same color format, because it is one of the most recognizable color schemes in the world.
The livery designed by Raymond Loewy and approved by Jacqueline Kennedy has flown the bodies of JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and George H. W. Bush. But Trump comes along and wants it changed to match his personal plane. If that doesn't prove to you what an egotistical, unpatriotic POS that man is, nothing will.
Jackie's design is gone. Trump Force 1 will be more patriotic and appropriate.
@@RevJim-qc2ry you just said it. That is nothing more than trying to copy his own pathetic failed airline paint scheme.
Agree keep same colors.
@@RevJim-qc2ry Don't mess with Airforce one colors alone!!! Besides we don't want any remembrance of Trump!
The Raymond Loewy designed livery is iconic and shouldn't be changed.
No way will Biden keep Trump's paint scheme

@@turkey0165 the paint job is beautiful and iconic who cares about who was in power when it was created. everyone in the world knows what Air Force One looks like, changing it destroys the identity! @Kelly Cornering Good story, now tell that to Brandon ! 😚
@@turkey0165 The military has already nixed the plan of the color scheme of Trump scheme.
On the basis of the keeping the aircraft cooling from overheating etc.
So it’ll be the same color scheme as originally designed.

The extra money is for the high tech security devices (like missles sensor) and internet, and direct phone calls

It seems a little weird to get rid of in-air refueling, isn't that basically essential in the event of a war or if there's mechanical problems on board?
Yes, it is needed, but Trump did not do contingency planning or thoughtfulness very well.
I would think that if a plane had mechanical problems, the last thing the crew would want to do is put more fuel in. They'll want to get on the ground.
@@mikelowe5096 ,
Old USAF story of wanting more time to do airborne assessment and practice approaches at high altitude. They have refueled aircraft with problems to get them to better landing locations and to get more analysis time.
It may be that mid-air refueling presents some danger with close proximity to another large aircraft, more danger than having to land to fuel up. The idea of having 4 engines does provide more saftey, I would think, I think they will continue with the 747 platform for years to come. They have outstanding performance for such a large plane.
I guess they plan on relying on that doomsday air force one that is set up for use during war. I think there are several and are called E4b's. I remember during the 9/11 attacks there was talk of transferring president Bush to it. I think they are still around
“Biden force one”
We aren’t calling the 747s the Bush force now, are we?

Trump came up with the new design idea anyway

Im a bit on the fence about the design.
It looks really good but you know we had the old design since forever.
@@aviationbossandguitar1034 I like the OLD design better. Anything that trump think up is GARBAGE
I think we should’ve kept the old livery since that would keep the tradition, but unfortunately Trump broke tradition like he always does.
I really think it needs to be derived from the 747 again. There's just a presence and prestige to them you can't get from other Boeing models.

I agree. I've flown once on one and the flight was fabulous. The Boeing 747 and the L-1011 Tristar are my two favourite makes/models. and the 747 Airforce 1 is one beautiful plane. I hope they keep the present colour scheme. It's a powerful, yet understated look and shows undeniable good taste, Trumps colour scheme isn't bad but is still on the garish side.
I think that it will be painted in the original scheme like the previous aircraft. Its very recognizable!
I hope that the planes are painted with the 60 year old iconic paint scheme.
Yes, the livery will be the same.
@@dartmaster501 Trump tried to change it to "his" plane colors .. ugh
I thought the ability to refuel midair was a massive advantage of the jet, doesn't it seem like a big loss? I thought of it as a feature hopefully never to be used but the fact that it could gave power and security
I believe that the refueling capability was in case of Nuclear War (but Bunkers, not aircraft, are where you should be). With US Bases almost everywhere and engines far more efficient than the engines on the current aircraft, it may not be necessary for refueling.
If I were to bet money, I would guess that Mr. "Super Jenius" demanded to win a price negotiation so refueling was cut. I could be wrong but I'd place some coin on that bet if I could be sure to get the definitive answer on whether it was a factor.
Dubbed " Moron one"
AF1 has never mid-air refueled with POTUS on board, it was meant to be used in emergencies only, but it's not very practical in the modern era where a sub-launched ballistic missile could take out Andrews and the AF1 planes in under 10 minutes from 300+ miles away...
@@arcanondrum6543 Fair point it's probably a change in strategy to go under ground rather than above which I could see making more sense
@@conorcorrigan765 I suppose so but 300 miles really isn't that far either. Anti air has improved and it is where the Russians excel so maybe that's also why
Trump approved it at $4B. Biden added a diaper dispenser which jacked the price.
Lame. Which is expected from a trump fanboy.
@@elbob248 awwww. Thst hurt.
About time someone pointed out the obvious. Biden has, and will have, nothing to do with it.
Boeing is due to deliver it's last commercial 747's in 2022, to Atlas Air. A cargo airline. If the new Air Force One's are delivered in 2024, the will be the last 747's ever made. Which I guess is a more fitting end to one of the most iconic aircraft ever to fly.
The new air force one's are already a couple years old, originally to be delivered to a foreign carrier but canceled. The final atlas air 747's will be the last ones to roll out of the everett plant
The vc-25b's uses 2 already built 747's. Plus the conversions is not at everett. They will just be the last delivered 747's.
Not for the vegetable we have in the White House now. It's a shame.
Can we try and stop normalising this trend of calling every head of state’s private aircraft “(their name) force one”? It’s very irritating and inaccurate.
I think you should leave the people who spend the time on these videos to decide that.
@@nigelmarvin1387 Air Force One is the callsign for any aircraft which the president of the United States is on. Bearing in mind that the president exclusively travels on their VC-25’s then it’s acceptable to refer to those as Air Force One, but calling them Biden Force One just doesn’t make sense, and I think that has stemmed from when the media called the Royal Air Force A330MRTT which was painted into the United Kingdom livery “Boris Force One” which is even more bl**dy stupid because it has no link to the USAF, and isn’t even the plane for the prime minister of the UK, it’s first role when not being an aerial refueller is to transport the Monarch of the UK. Sorry for the rant but it’s infuriating how many people are misusing the “Air Force one” callsign.
@EIon Musk actually the airframes were purchased from Boeing, originally built for a Russian airline which collapsed before they could be delivered, but yes hopefully Trump will be back in office for his second term in 2024.
@@dylanminett8552 Boris Farce One is a better discription.
The planes used as AF1 frequently practice touch and go landings at PHF. It is so neat to see the easily recognizable livery as it flys over Hampton Roads.
I used to see them 5 days a week at Andrew's AFB.
I have seen two of the former Air Force 1 planes. The one in Seattle and the one in Simi. The one in Simi Valley was stored in Riverside before it went there. I saw it in both places. Regarding the new ones lacking mid air fueling; I don't think they need it. Those planes can go 10,000 - 12,000 miles with full tanks.
Not to mention the cost of having the system for upkeep etc. Just wasn’t a priority of items needed. Instead the monies that it would cost they have spent the money on something else.
1:55 while it is true that the average life expectancy for a 747 is 30 years, that is for one kept in commercial service. These planes have MUCH less usage than one flying every day for an airline. They should be able to get twice, if not more than that from these planes
Years isn't the only factor for aircraft lifespans.
So did the space shuttles, But; communist Obama put the USA out of space force by canceling it..
Instead of better management of NASA's budgets...
@@charlesbrownii5254 ok "Charles", I think you've had your fun for the day now, provoking the imperialist westerners 😒
Government aircraft don't get much flight cycles, but these aircraft gets still older. Airlines move on with new engine types, and 747-200 engines are not common any more. Spare parts get more expensive (the - 400 got a major overhaul including new wings and new engines, and a new cockpit, and has technically little to do with the - 200). Also you can't simple park it like a car, aircraft are made for flying. The German government A 340s got unreliable because they have been used too little, they suffered from a lot of defects while Lufthansa was operating the same 340-300s without such problems and with a good reliability.
@@charlesbrownii5254 Bush was the one that approved the retirement of the shuttles, Obama simply complied with it. Also the Space Shuttle was expensive and dangerous, and a deeply compromised design that NASA was happy to be rid of so it could focus on other projects, like Orion/SLS.
The classic paint scheme was historic, it should never have been changed. The current paint looks like a common low budget airline.
Goodbye to Jackie's color of weakness, that awful baby blue.
Because it is, the color scheme is strikingly similar to a certain president's bankrupted airline
I'm not opposed to a new paint scheme, but agree the current proposal looks rather ordinary.
The new design is much more patriotic for America
trumps new color scheme looks too much like Putin’s plane. The current scheme is ICONIC! It’s known around the world! We don’t need Putin Force Two
For those that have to fly and fight in the air, there's a very good reason to have four engines and mid-air refueling for the President's plane.
Yeah, I think that was a mistake. I hope they put it back in the refit. He can't exactly catwalk across to the Doomsday Plane.

@@nigelmarvin1387 it’s a backup If there’s a nuke attack
They bought already constructed planes. So they’d have to go back and retrofit it, and like Nigel says, it’s doubtful that they even use it now, so what would be the point. If you want to use it, you have to qualify your pilots (through both initial and recurring training) to use it. Plus… the bobbing and weaving of arial refueling is not the most comfortable experience to sit through. I know it makes many aircrew members sick and they do it for a living. They probably choose not to subject passengers to all of that if it isn’t necessary. The fewer sick passengers you have on the jet equates to the fewer sick passengers a maintainer has to clean up after.
@@militaryav8r Tbh, almost all of the retrofit on a plane such as Air Force One is a "what-if" scenario. What if you need a second APU on the ground? What if you have missiles fired against you? What if you need to take of steeply? When you include all this, you should really have in-air refuelling.
@@SouvikMukherjeeACFCOD none of what you mention involves additional pilot training requirements, the potential for damaging the aircraft in the process of that training, passenger discomfort… all for what gain? It’s a system that doesn’t seem to be used now anyways.

I had a couple different opportunities to see the current 747 Air Force One aircraft. In my younger days I was in Salina Kansas when these jets were being tested while still in their bright green primer paint. They did several touch and goes while I was on the ramp near by. Very impressive, especially to the young kid I was then. More recently President Obama made a visit to the small town where I now live so I got to see one of them pretty close again at my town's small little airport but now of course in full livery. Again, very impressive to the old guy I am now.
In an interview years ago with A group of ex presidents. The interviewer asked what the best part of being president was. Bill Clinton answered with the agreement of the others, “ it’s that damn plane”!
The new livery isn’t bad, but the classic livery is iconic. Plus we have other planes that use that scheme as well.
The new livery looks a little bit like the livery of the German government aircraft, even the new A 350s have this oldschool livery with the color strip running straight around the aircraft. In my opinion the classic AF1 livery looks more modern than the new one.

no, they have said that is not real
Jackie is credited with the color scheme but it was done to help the plane blend in with the sky depending on the angle it could be viewed from. I think Vanta Black would be cool for absorbing radar waves. But, it would get extremely hot. I like the idea of Boom making a presidential supersonic jet.
You dont know how Air planes cool down do you ?
The original color scheme was created by industrial designer Raymond Loewy. It has changed slightly through the years as new aircraft were delivered. Many think that the Kennedy 707 was the first and only 707 until the new 747 based Air Force One was delivered, there were 2 others. You can see subtle changes upon each delivery. The livery for the new jets to be delivered in 2024 should stay the same. It is instantly recognizable as Air Force One, and has always represented the United States well. As far as which presidential libraries should be given the 2 jets available, George W Bush, And Barack Obama should, in my opinion be selected since they had the jets for 2 eight year terms.
@@homelessnomad101 Fair enough. What is your point?

It would have been American made, regardless of whether it went to Airbus or Boeing.
As a pilot who has flown both, Airbus is a better product. But nothing is more beautiful than a 747.

Everything a president can do in person he can also do in a phone call or virtual meeting.
@@christopherbriggs9526 You can't hold the Saudi glowing ball.
Hard to believe the current models only have one APU. In almost every disaster type crash it seems the APU is put out of commission in half of them and is mandatory for controls to landing the plane.
Secondary APU's are redundant on commercial aircraft due to the passive redundancy provided by the RATs these days. The Ram Air Turbine is plenty adequate for emergency power.
Keep the traditional livery. It is classic and looks awesome. Why mess with perfection!
Yes. Especially because JFK chose it for the old 707 Air force one, so it is sort of a tribute to keep it.

went through 27000 at the Reagan library- 707. One word? cramped. Packed like sardines. The presidential "office" is about the size of a postage stamp. The "bed" reminded me of a small two cushion love seat. I contemplated a trip from Washington to Moscow like Nixon and Reagan took using 707's. While looking around, I started feeling claustrophobic. I suppose that is one of the hazards of being commander in chief.
8:57 as far as the livery or color scheme goes, I would stick with the traditional blue/white colors and paint job design but with some minor red color incorporated into it
Air Force 1 is a CALLSIGN, not a jet. :)
its also a shoe :)
@@ultra_01 lmao
Any Aircraft carrying the President has the call Sign Air Force One and any Helicopter has the call Sign Marine One.

Each 747 will feature a MacBook capable of connecting to an alien mothership and disabling it.
It has a Romulan cloaking device.

*wants the interior to be much more lavish.*
Interesting that they are not including the mid ear refueling. I would like to see the classic livery used with maybe a few minor tweaks.
Years ago, changed from "Andrews AFB" to "Joint Base Andrews"
This has been the most accurate coverage of VC-25B that I have seen!!!
I heard nothing of the refrigerators...
I would doubt that when it rolls out it doesn't have mid air refueling
If the 747X existed, I would want that as Air Force One.
The a380 would never be a Air Force plane because resin number one [ITS NOT MADE IN AMERICA]
Well it's limited to what airports it could fly into and besides that, it's an ugly looking aircraft
It also looks ugly with the livery
I don’t think boring parts are made in china
Boeing I mean
@Night Rider most parts cant come from china or the planes would have a massive tariff. my father used to work for a Boeing contractor in la.
also, imagine trying to get any quality control from china to comply with faa regulations ,it ain't gonna happen
CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS NOW!!
Is the cost per plane and does it include ready spares (consumable parts such as motors, engines, flight control surfaces, tires)? Glad that they didn’t go with an Airbus, as too many parts are European and a military aircraft as with any vehicle benefits greatly from domestic abilities to supply it.
I think but I am not sure, you can retro fit an AR system into an existing airframe.
In 1961, Jackie Kennedy enlisted the services of famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy to design a new livery for Air Force One. His design remains to this day. After 60 years, the design looks as fresh as ever and should never be altered.
Indeed.
100% AGREE
100% Disagree. Red White and Blue.
@@robertblack7352 Should we repaint Marine 1 and the beast while we’re at it? Just shove red white and blue every where we possibly can? Sometimes it’s okay to not have something that uses those colors.
@@DerCharacter AF1 is special. I really love the new livery look.
Typical government nonsense
You bid on something and say "Hey, it will cost you $10"
Later, they say, "I forgot to include salaries for the builders, money for buying parts, money for ordering the electronics. It will actually cost $100,000,000,000,000,000"
Government officials - "OK, makes sense"
Only when they're spending other people's money.
The costs are inline with commercial aircraft development costs. A derivativere of an existing model is going to cost around $3.5 billion to certify to FAA civil requirements. The Planes will cost around $600 million each to produce plus another hundred or two for hangers and ground support equipment.

@Assassin Mongoose.....not so. All money that government spends is either borrowed or collected via taxes. Even "treasury" money is debt that in theory must be paid back from the taxpayers.
If not, please have them send the hundreds of thousands of dollars I've paid in federal taxes alone.

Trump got Boeing to give a cost price on the contract. Boeing can't charge any more for the two Air Force One's they are building. They are complaining they can't charge more because all of the costs have gone up. I'm sure they will tack the overages on to some other military hardware. Maybe a screwdriver

@@voxpopuli8957 it is a very pretty livery, but the US, just all other things american, are not changing, and we need to have an updated paint job. I'm good for even solid white with striped tail and rear fuselage, or a simplified American airforce style Boeing House Livery. The current scheme is 60 years old. Showing up in a new livery will show the world we are progressing, not staying in the past.
@@norfolksouthernrailworks1543 I don’t really see how this will change our image to the world. If other nations really notice the change, it may just as easily show to them that Trump, who is deeply unpopular among all of our allies, had an impact. Perfect timing for President Trump's new term.

1.) 5 billion is cheap considering that includes two units as well as testing and the hanger.

3.) The older livery looks better than the mind-blowingly antique looking livery Trump suggested.
4.) However i think the older livery isn't all that great either.
5.) They should cut down on the additional expenses to make it more luxurious and redirect those savings to make the craft more secure and advanced.

Built in Memory-Care Facility for Biden, nice touch.

SHE's gone too?? Uh, how 'bout Tip O'Neill? TIP expired too?! I know, I'll call Ike personally. Republican, but a damn fine General. Just had a beer with him last night."
Should keep in-flight refueling (seems idiotic to remove that), and should have a presidential escape pod. Worked for Harrison Ford, so good enough for any president.
Please don't change the color scheme. The air force one livery is amazing as it is
Its time for a change people will like it over time
i think it should look bland so nobody could tell what plane it is
The livery goes back to 1962. In that time, Delta changed it's livery 4 times. United changed its livery 5 times. American changed its livery 3 times.
It's an iconic livery, but the colors are very 1960s. Further the up-sweep of the sky blue looks fine on the 707. But, it's never looked right on the 747 with the upper deck.
My only problem with the new livery is that the flag on the tail is a little too big. It just comes across as too "in your face."

Will be fun to see how badly Boeing screws this one up. The KC-46 tanker (based on a 40 year old design) is years and years behind schedule and almost completely unusable until at least 2023. Our defense industry, from ships to jets, is an absolute joke anymore.

I will say how business is conducted in the defense industry is a joke. It would be nice to see someone like Elon musk come in and change the industry like he has with the space industry
Present day Boeing could screw up a one-car funeral. A one-time fan of BA, who actively sought flights on their birds, I can now say honestly I would rather fly on an Airbus - and I reached that conclusion long before the 737MAX sh*t show.
Boeing screw-ups are cheap when compared to the cost of the U.S.S Gerald R Ford CVN -78 and the money hungry at Newport News ship builders.
