The world seems a lot harder than it used to be. Twitter and blog comments fill up with pedantic responses and cutthroat businesses make gobs of money. It's easy to stop and think that being nice has gone out of fashion, only to be replaced by sharp, aggressive rhetoric. Despite today's internet and business climate, you can still get amazing opportunities, meet interesting people, and succeed by being nice. This is the story of how saying "thank you" altered the course of my life and career.

"smiling... courage... learn... share it... polite..." all the good sounding words I am so used to hear, when I have learned that, do not listen to what people say, but instead, look at what people do

You can see it that way. Or you can consider it as when you realize that smiling when life is hard gives you courage and helps you to see what good you can learn from this experience and how you can share it with everyone as Nicholas just did. It is also being polite with people who potentially took the time to read what you provided and considering their effort while looking at every proposals they receive. The reader engages his responsibility when accepting or refusing to publish a book.

Being smart enough to say thank you and go on, doesn't mean accept and anything someone would be asking you. Say thank you also helps you to throw away your potential anger and stress and concentrate yourself on what makes you happy or makes you progress

I think it really depends on the situation. Some people, knowing you are the kind type, will try to take advantage of you. And nowadays, I see more people trying to squeeze out money from another person a lot more often than they would genuinely be kind to another person.

And who knows, even without that "Thank you" or subsequently "Thank you", maybe Nicholas would never publish a book, but interviewed at Google in 2004 and got hired and not only became a multi-millionaire but became a successful startup founder later on, so it is really hard to say what happens. Is being a multi-millionaire and a successful startup founder better, it is hard to say too.

so saying "Thank You" so as to maximize the benefit you can gain from the world, right? Nowadays, all the "technique" that you should smile, you should respect, you should do this and that, are all geared towards "getting more", getting profits or benefits from the world

As much I apreciate Nicholas, I must disagree with him. You should not think before you talk. It should be in your nature to say nice things to people, because that's the way of how you would want to be treated. We, first of all, are human beings and we need to be kind with people around as, just because of that.
