It would be on my radar if it weren't for the price. The CRF250 is $5,149, this CRF450 is $10,399, and the Africa Twin is $13,499. To me, it's way overpriced. It's more than double the 250 and almost as much as the Africa Twin. If I'm spending that kind of money, I might as well just buy the Twin. Definitely would feel wrong spending that much money on a 450 dual sport, at least to me anyway.
You do realize a 250l is a 23-25hp dog and the 450 is a 45-55hp animal. Better suspension, lighter, fuel injected, six speed trans and decent maintenance schedule. Not another Japanese manufacture produces that level of dual sport. I would say 600mi for the first oil/filter change. Real world is more like 3000mi. Unless you’re running the crap out of the motor. This thing has enough power that you’re never really running it hard.
And what is it that the people actually want? Everything I've heard readers complaining about has been an underpowered and under suspended CRF250L. Folks have been clamoring for something with more power. So they gave it to them. I get that 600 miles for an oil change isn't ideal, but the thing takes a quart of oil. Finally got my 2002 XR650R street legal in Nebraska after years and years of trying (bought a titled frame out of state). The 650R runs as strong today as the day I bought it off the showroom floor. Valves adjustment and oil changes are all I needed to do. Wish Honda would have put an electric start on the 650 motor and put it in the new 450L frame. That would have made an EPIC dualsport. Wouldnt want the maintenance or rebuild times of the 450 motor. Hell I just took the 650 to Moab and did multiple 300 mile days on the jeep trails.
They need to work on a slimmed down CB500 engine in this frame. All of these single piston thumper engines will never have great reliability nor highway manners, which is what you need in a true US dual sport bike due to the distance most have to trails. The CB500 engine has 8000mile oil change and 25,000 valve check intervals. Just gas it up and forget about it.
Maybe, but my 650r motor will run down the interstate if needed. A micro africa twin like you suggest would be cool, but heavy. The 650r weighs 275 lbs dry and works perfect on the highway. I have heard of people with 60,000 miles on XR650r's.
Just passed my 2000 XR650r (street plated 37k miles) on to my 17 yr old son . Stunning how far this bike can go with regular maintenance and oil changes .

I don't get what the big deal is with this bike? KTM and Husky, even Beta, have been making the same class bike for a decades. The 500exc/FE501...and even the 690/701. 480rr for Beta. Everyone is acting like this is the first time we've seen a bike like this. Why buy this under-powered/heavy (comparatively) bike when the KTM's/Husqy's exist and do everything this bike does, just as well, or better? Way better in most cases. I'm having a hard time getting on the hype train with this bike. Over-hyped and marketed release. Yawn.
The Honda reliability thing MAY have been true...what,15-20 years ago? Things are a LOT different now. It seems odd to claim reliability as a reason to buy a Honda over other brands that do pretty much every thing better, for the same price, when the 'reliability gap' is minuscule at best, if it even exists at all. As far as that goes, I don't believe the reliability argument was ever more than Honda's clever marketing, and internet myth. Either-way, I don't want to sound like I'm shitting on what Honda has here, it's probably a great bike. But way WAAAAAY to over hyped. It's been done before and isn't THAT special. I am biased of course, I own a 2 stroke KTM, but there is no way I would look at a FE501 next to this 450L and decide I wanted the red over the white. :O lol Put the red 450L through Erzberg and onto the podium, then I'll believe the hype.
Honestly... I think people's interest went up because the rumour was out that Honda were making a 450 dual sport months and months back. There's literally thousands of kids out there screaming for a replacement to the DRZ400, and nobody's making one lol. I saw a lot of hype about this bike months ago along those lines - that Honda would come and save them basically lol. But yeah, it isn't that - it's modern Honda's trend of taking a platform and selling it as many different ways as possible. It's a dual sport in name and some parts, but the 600 mile oil change and 1800 mile valve clearances mean this is 99% a trail bike still. Honestly, I actually noticed the collective sigh once people realised it was gonna be another trail bike when the stats came out. So yeah, honestly I feel like the hype is because a lot of people got into it, then got over it, but that surge in interest spurred the bike media on
I live in Oregon and have the crf250L. I would love to trade up to the 450... but not for the same Price as a KTM... alot of my fellow riders have the same Issue. if honda would make this an 8k-9k bike they would double the sales
Like hell it does. Most motocross bikes have maintenance intervals of not much more than 100 engine hours with normal trail riding. This pig has a recommended maintenance interval of around ten times that, which means that with normal riding you can probably ride for well over 1000 hours without disassembling the engine. Of course if you're the sort of rider who takes his bike to the dealer for an oil change, I can see why you'd have a problem. If that's the case this kind of bike probably isn't for you anyway.
I'm not sure why I'm supposed to be excited about this. KTM 690 enduro is only 15 pounds heavier, produces 20 more HP, and has literally 10 times the maintenance interval while costing about the same. If it were like 240lbs maybe I'd think about it.
Rusty Shackleford to adhere to the warranty the engine rebuild is recommended at 20,000 miles. I’m with you, that’s not even close to a full on race bike. Also, you get a year warranty standard but can purchase an additional 5 years for a total of 6 years with unlimited mileage. Oil changes are recommended at 600 miles, and valve checks every 1,800 miles. While it’s definitely not a street bike, I think it adds a lot of performance without being as temperamental as a true race bike.
More power isn't always a good thing, especially for low-skilled riders. A 450 is plenty for every single half-decent rider out there. I'm sure it's plenty for you, too. 15 pounds is also a noticeable difference on bikes this small, and you could easily drop a few off this Honda.
Nice review, just need honda now to come out with a crf 650r based on the xr650r with a kick start and magic button and 65 hp out the door with the dry weight of 250lbs to go head to head with ktm and the husky's !
You got to ride Walker Valley, ask Steve about it. I rode there every Sunday for years. I really miss Washington as I'm stuck back in Jersey. Nice video.
No doubt I would have considered one. However, the maintenance intervals are abysmal. I want something I don't have to do an oil change on after every weekend of riding and check valves once a month.
Nice revue mate. Enjoyed watching. Finally the bike I've been waiting for. Honda quality and light. Put some hand guards on...and good to go. I'm only 1,72 meters, but as long as I can put one foot down....champion! Going to Cologne at the weekend to the international motorbike convention. So like you 'Mericans say: Super awesome....you know (only kidding) Ride safe :)
DRZ400 is the only one that's close to a 450, but not fuel injected, and has 5 gears instead of 6. Is not as agile as the CRFs either. Weighs 320lbs while this 450 weighs 279. The DRZ400 is a beast of a bike, but its a bit old now and can't be undated because it is grandfathered into the regulations. I'll stick to my CRF250L until Honda comes out with the 450L with long service intervals. And btw, you missed WR250 in your list of good duel sports.
The 450L is based off of the 450X, which is a full on performance dirt bike. They did the 250L a bit differently and made it more tame than other 250 dirt bikes, but also made it have longer service intervals. I think that the 250L has the same motor as CBR250R if memory serves me correct. That's sort of what I meant by "tamer".
hi, everybody say Oil changes are recommended at 600 miles, but in off road it does not mean much ,speak in hour please, how much is 600 miles? 20 hours?25hours?30hours?
Honda isn't using "Hours" for this bike. There isn't a hour meter on the bike in stock form. The maintenance schedule for the CRF450L is all done in miles off of the bikes odometer. 600 mile oil changes. 1,800 mile valve checks.
absolutly awsome review,,,spot on for what the bike acually is.. it fills the gap between monster bmw adventure bikes and the smaller 250 models like wr and crf250l.
Trade in your old cameras for new ones with 'image stabilizer' tech. Seriously. That video is hard to watch. Over-all content: Good and helpful. Thanks.

If Honda can do it, Yamaha can make a WR450 or 350R based on the WR250R but with improved power, better rear suspension and shave some pounds off of it, that's what I want.
I mean, this bike weighs less than the current WR250, has a MUCH better stock suspension, and easily makes double the power. Yamaha would have to put some real work into the WR250R platform to get to this level of performance.
Right but you're comparing a $10,000 + 450 dirtbike with a plate and high maintenance that's been out for 5 seconds to a low maintenance 250 dual sport that hasn't been re designed in a decade. I think the WR250R does everything it's expected to do and then some. Just wish it came in a 450. Great review btw!
Thanks for watching as well as for making an educated reply. I guess my point was is that if they were to make a 450, I don't know if it would be any better or worse than what you're getting with the new CRF450L. And I would assume it would have a similar price tag.
Damn, whaddup Spurge. I guess what I'm saying is that with the $4K(?) you'd save by going DRZ, you can make up for the suspension and power difference pretty easily. You got me at weight though.
I like this bike however I would really prefer an updated reliable Japanese DUAL sport tooled for longer distance rides, with fuel injection, disc breaks, a 400cc or 500cc in a 300lb Max package with 4K+ oil changes & 18k+ valve check intervals for $10k+...Might as well “throw” in a very modern piece of technology called a “fuel gauge”....So essentially a more powerful WR250R I suppose.. something when I ride 600 mile weekends I wouldn’t need to perform maintenance to continue riding. The current DRZ is close minus fueling however was hoping for fuel injection...let’s face it...it’s convenient. Given I need to ride 100 miles to access trails that setup would be ideal. I was close on pulling the trigger on a WR250R however was hoping some reliable Japanese brand would come out with a more powerful option with same features and maintenance intervals....not certain if its possible...I do ride/own a large 1200 ADV bike however I would like something that is lighter for the rougher single track stuff. Hurling 585lbs through single tracks isn’t what it’s cracked up to be...
I like the bike, I currently ride a crf250l... but with that price point and the oil change intervals I would rather get a ktm 690r. I like being able to ride several thousand km before an oil change, 1000 is a nuisance for any trips.
Please come back and ride to Mt .St Helens on logging roads. From Packwood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packwood,_Washington It's an ultimate bucket list check
I break down everything in the article: www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2019-honda-crf450l-first-ride-motorcycle-review TL;DR: 600 mile oil changes, 1,800 mile valve checks. Up to a 6 year, unlimited mile warranty.
I don't think this bike will sell very well. It falls in between lot of categories. It's like a F-35, tries to be everything = if you want to use it as an adventure bike, the service intervals are too frequent. If you want to use it on road, it's not that great. If you want to use it on tight trails, it's too stiff and heavy (250's 4 stroke are best on tight forest trails, gravel and rocks in my experience. A 450 will wear you out. Too powerful for that slow riding). I really don't see a reason to buy it, other than it looks beautiful. Hoping for a Honda 450 true adventure bike with same service intervals as the 250. And some kg's lighter.
Dirtbike Anarchy yeah, but all this shit is “pay to play”. The biggest difference with the PNW is that the trail system is state run on public land. It’s all free and legal.

$13,000 Canadian out the door! That's nuts for a dirt bike?! I have a twenty year old Yamaha WR400 that I put 600 hard trail miles on a season up in cottage country in northern Ontario. Thirteen grand is in car territory. Buy one new and after the first trail ride good luck trying to sell it for more than eight grand if the honeymoon doesn't work out. $2500 for my old WR and it's never let me down and every ride is a blast. I could have five used WR's for the price of one CRF! I think Honda has done a great job with the CRF but it's very very hard to justify that kind of scratch for a dirt bike. Sorry Honda.

Yawn.
Zeus33rd Reliability.
Alan V have you seen the maintenance schedule for the 450l?
Yawn, I'm with you
So yeah, honestly I feel like the hype is because a lot of people got into it, then got over it, but that surge in interest spurred the bike media on
hows that small seat? why did honda put such a big price tag on this bike? compared to the drz400.
I live in Oregon and have the crf250L. I would love to trade up to the 450... but not for the same Price as a KTM...
alot of my fellow riders have the same Issue. if honda would make this an 8k-9k bike they would double the sales
Nice review, I've got a 250 rally and will be looking to upgrade eventually to the 450 :)
This is not a trail bike.... It has motrocross maintenance schedules...
Oriol Porcar Is that so? Whooah... why? Sigh.
You look ten years younger without the facial hair and it's a good look. Great review as always.
Nice review, just need honda now to come out with a crf 650r based on the xr650r with a kick start and magic button and 65 hp out the door with the dry weight of 250lbs to go head to head with ktm and the husky's !
A 650 that weights 250lbs??? Aint never gonna happen, maybe 325lbs, maybe........
That can't be titanium header? I think I saw some blue.
Are those the stock foot pegs?
Yep.
How does this compare to the Yamaha wr250?
You got to ride Walker Valley, ask Steve about it. I rode there every Sunday for years. I really miss Washington as I'm stuck back in Jersey. Nice video.
Come ride with us in PA
No doubt I would have considered one. However, the maintenance intervals are abysmal. I want something I don't have to do an oil change on after every weekend of riding and check valves once a month.
Glad I bought the fe last spring. I would be going in circles as which to get. Probably wouldn’t buy the first year of a new release either way.
Where exactly were you riding?
Nice revue mate. Enjoyed watching. Finally the bike I've been waiting for. Honda quality and light. Put some hand guards on...and good to go. I'm only 1,72 meters, but as long as I can put one foot down....champion! Going to Cologne at the weekend to the international motorbike convention. So like you 'Mericans say: Super awesome....you know (only kidding) Ride safe :)
How many bhp/ torque..?
If they make a tamer version of this bike with longer service intervals, I'd be in heaven.
?
Will the amazing team on Revzilla review the FTR1200?
Johan Elmqvist absolutely.
Thanks for sharing this awesome information. That’s a nice bike. 👍🏼👍🏼
Its a renthal bike?
I wonder how commuting would last for the engine
Great question...guess it comes to how far...for me the CRF250 or XR650 are better suited given maintenance schedules.
Stephen Romano what does that have to do with the commuting ability lol
No kick start??
Like this bike but the wors part is the mainetenance. As a adv touring rider i will like to change oil at lest 5-6000 km not every 1000 :((
Again another excellent video. I see a spurg video I watch...ezpz.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jesse.
No facial hair! You look 15 now! 😄
So you're saying I shaved 20 years off?! That's good to hear! Hopefully when I am 45 I'll look like I am 25!
Thank you for this video. Can you please share the exact location, where this video was shot? Happy vibes from Goa, India.
Gifford Pinchot National Forest, in Washington State.
I think for > $10K I'd just go for a husky or ktm. If it were closer to $8k, maybe.
What part of Washington is this?
Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Where in WA? Tahuya? Capitol Forest? Gifford Pinchot?
The article said near Packwood.
Gifford Pinchot. Can’t wait to go back some day. It was so much fun.
Man, I should start vlogging or something so I can get invited to press events... Hope you had fun in my back yard!
Mr Spurge...what are you wearing for upper body armor?
That'd be the Leatt 5.5. -Kraus-e
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/leatt-55-body-protector
Were you wearing armor?
helloman1976 Leatt 5.5
"We don't have riding like this in Pennsylvania."
I guess you've never ridden the Allegheny National Forest. ANF is fantastic.
You aint riding in the right parts of PA then. Get away from Philly and you might find some! Great video as always!
hi, everybody say Oil changes are recommended at 600 miles, but in off road it does not mean much ,speak in hour please, how much is 600 miles? 20 hours?25hours?30hours?
Honda isn't using "Hours" for this bike. There isn't a hour meter on the bike in stock form. The maintenance schedule for the CRF450L is all done in miles off of the bikes odometer. 600 mile oil changes. 1,800 mile valve checks.
absolutly awsome review,,,spot on for what the bike acually is.. it fills the gap between monster bmw adventure bikes and the smaller 250 models like wr and crf250l.
I think I’d give up some power for my WR250R and it’s maintenance schedule.
i have been heavily debating on if i should get this bike, thanks for the insight while riding in my neck of the woods.
It was literally my pleasure.
This bike cost 14.900 USD here in Norway.. thats a no go for me..
I don't understand how Honda can charge this much for a dirtbike. At my local Honda dealer they have an Africa Twin and a CBR 600rr on sale under 10k.
On a scale of 1 to 3 on the Beard Difficulty Scale....."It's Mach 3".
Nice
You should have come to Walker Valley and rode some real single track trails - Walker Valley Gnar - KTM500's work great out here!
Trade in your old cameras for new ones with 'image stabilizer' tech. Seriously. That video is hard to watch.
Over-all content: Good and helpful.
Thanks.
can you install a kick start on this bike?
lol you don't need one
@@bryansmith6080 if your are riding tight trails/dificult topagraphy it becomes evident that the battery is insufficient for repeated starts in rapid succession. Watch the last quarter of any hard endure race and see how many guys are unable to restart with the go button.
well don't think Honda is selling the 450l as an enduro race bike are they? @@TheOpinionationer
it's ok if you don't know whether a kick starter would be a matter of parts replacement, or something more difficult. Anyone else want to chime in?
@@TheOpinionationer I guess that is one way to dodge my question
I'd buy this bike expect for the 90 mph governor
In Germany we only get it with less than 30 hp... Sad story
@@dirtypool7973 Actually Euro 4... Euro 5 will destroy almost everything that makes fun 😔
Even if Yamaha just updated the 250R; new bodywork, maybe bore it out some, nice LED everything like this bike.
what’s the top speed of crf450L?..
reynaldo ruscan I hit 91 mph.
knobbies wouldn't go over 90 sumo tires get about 96-104 all single cylinder motorcycles over 250cc top out around 100 give or take
3:18 cool the music has stopped now i get to hear it----- nope more music...
Does it have a tach and gas gauge? The price..... Honda really missed the mark.
Is the engine maintenance the same as on CRF450R?
100hrs on a top end rebuilds and shit?
Honda CR125 Motard goes by miles. 20,000 miles for a top end rebuild.
Especially if I’m not afraid of carbs, why wouldn’t I just get a DRZ?
noobasdfjkl they’re very heavy and pretty pricey too
This bike is lighter, has a better stock suspension, and makes more power.
Damn, whaddup Spurge. I guess what I'm saying is that with the $4K(?) you'd save by going DRZ, you can make up for the suspension and power difference pretty easily. You got me at weight though.
Hi! Does anybody know if it has ABS??
jaypetter no ABS.
From Packwood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packwood,_Washington
It's an ultimate bucket list check
They need to make the rally version, would be perfect
I wonder about maintenance.
I break down everything in the article: www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2019-honda-crf450l-first-ride-motorcycle-review
TL;DR: 600 mile oil changes, 1,800 mile valve checks. Up to a 6 year, unlimited mile warranty.
This is the bike to buy.
Spurge without a beard is really freaking me out rn
Welcome to our backyard, it's awesome here.
Wei Sami Zhuang sept all the liberals
This bike world is calling out to me
The big question is how is it vs. the DRZ400S ?
Thing is...in my country, I can buy no fewer than 5 used Drz400 's for the price of one crf.
Try a Beta 500RR-S
try lost trails in PA
Dirtbike Anarchy yeah, but all this shit is “pay to play”. The biggest difference with the PNW is that the trail system is state run on public land. It’s all free and legal.
Spurgeon Dunbar theres thomaston dam in CT, but its a hike. Free.
In PA there is Bald Eagle State Forest as long as you're running a plated bike.
For around $1000 more I could get a KTM 690 Enduro. I am wondering if this bike is actually competitive considering its cost.
the fe501 is a better bike yet with some mods it can be pepsi coke comparison.
Hi. I really want to know what you think about the CRF 150L. I'm trying to figure out which is better the CRF 150L or KLX150, and it would really be helpful if u let me know what u guys think.
3:34 many would disagree.
Man, I miss the good old days when Honda undercut all 4 of the other color bikes in every class by $1 MSRP.
And welcome to the NW, Spurge. Lookout for Bigfoot. He lives around Fircrest, Tacoma, works as a Barista while finishing his post grad work in Anthropology. And he's very woke now, so watch what you say, because he is easily offended.
Hahaha....
Looks like fun!
RevZilla is awesome.
Jealous as bro. That place looks lovely ❤️👌🏾
It’s the only way to get a plated Honda dirt bike for PA/NJ enduro unfortunately. This is why everyone rides eurotrash. Just for the plate
