  • Hi, in this Video I show you what I went through to improve four faces on my south bend 13 lathe.
I know it isn’t what was expected but, these faces could hold the key to getting the main saddle slideways corrected or at least improved. The next stage of the process will also probably raise eyebrows, and many comments. The proposed technique is probably doomed to fail, either way, I’ll still show you what I went through. The next video is probably going to take some doing, and I ask for your patience until I can get the next video out to you.
    Thanks for watching

im bussy working on a boley5lz bed. my approach is to rough shape it with a single point cutting set up, bit like a long bed planer. have some linear bearings bolted to the bed with a slead on top that cary a compound table holding the tool. so that i can treverse sideways after each pass. its very tedious and can only take of minute abount of material. im bussy looking at the posibilety to do drive it with a 24v dc wiper motor from an old truck. and belt or cable drive. had a long air cylinder on it , but that does not give any controle. by the time i have enough air to push the tool its a bit like pushed by a spring, and just go faster till it ram the stop at the end or knock it self off track. so i have done some by hand.
but thats to slow. the plan is to rough th shape in and then finalise by hand scraping. the bed has an eror of aroun 0.24mm , way more than im up to scrape out by hand.
when the bed is done ill cast moglice or bronze bearing pads into the sadle to compensate for the los of material.
this little boley is a shining example of the importance of cleaning your machine and enough of the right oil........ it had none of that in its previous life.

Hi Manus, I’m sure I have replied to you but for some reason it isn’t showing up on my comments markers, so just in case…
I like the single point shaver, ((a little secret) - That idea has crossed my mind and I've set up a similar system rerady to go) and I might use this idea but with a twist. I shaln’t be using a push pull motor like you are thinking of using, I’m going to do it all by hand,…. I hope. Without telling anyone what I am going to do, I also plan to rough shape first then scrape out the last bit…
As far as the bed ways are concerned, I dont have a plan for them… just yet. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.
My lathe looks like it was oiled quite well but used very little and after 80 years it is tired and needs a regrind, the rest is history.
      Regards

I still don not understand what you're doing? These top surfaces have no function at all, so what's all the work good for? As reference for further measurements? Looks somehow overcomplicated to me and too much work.
But ok, maybe I see the solution in one of the next videos.

    • @Thesheddweller
      @Thesheddweller  2 года назад

Hi Paul, basically my main intention was to repair my lathe bed Vee slides, by using as many true surfaces as I could possibly find, while at the same time investigating several avenues to repairing the vee slides. The three top faces and the front face certainly do not do anything, but by lining them up, I now have more options to assist me with whatever method I finally decide to use for improving the three worn vee slides. In the meantime and just as I was finishing the video the last channel of investigation came through and it looks quite promising, hence the teaser at the end of the video. regards

    Nice one Paul.
8 faces flat, level and parallel.
The question is, have you ordered 25kgs of elbow grease or are going down a powered "gadget" route?
Oh, The nut! Was that Heaths idea,,,, genius 😊
