Lead singer Eric Burdon and the Animals recorded the song in just one take on May 18, 1964. His 23rd birthday was a week prior to the recording.

Footnote, the bassist is Bryan James "Chas" Chandler, musician, record producer and manager, the man who brought Jimmy Hendrix to the world, fashion model Linda Keith convinced Animals' bassist Chas Chandler to see Hendrix at the Café Wha? in New York's Greenwich Village. Hendrix's performance on July 5, 1966, left Chandler awestruck. He immediately put into motion plans to bring Hendrix to London and help him become a superstar.

this one got some edginess to it. My father was listening to that song when I used to be a boy. Love it myself ever since, one of the only songs with a fitting organ besides "lite my fire" from the Doors. Another iconic song worth reacting to would be "gimme shelter" from the Rolling Stones, best intro of all time.

Great reaction Emma. The Animals were a contemporary of the Beatles. They came from Newcastle. The Beatles of course came from Liverpool. This song was a hit both in the US as well as in England. Sting, the former lead singer with the Police, is also from Newcastle as well.

Emma, since you mentioned wanting to see them perform live: there is a live performance of "Rising Sun" on the Ed Sullivan show from 1964(?) in black and white on YT (they're wearing the same suits as in this video). Please check out 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place' by Animals. It's hard to convey how different the style and subject matter was from the music American teens were being exposed to by our home-grown songwriters and artists. Maybe a few of us were being exposed to the blues by our parents or grandparents, but this was a rock group and we couldn't get enough of it!
