I think the main message of the song is that women are expected to be perfect all the time BUT all we are is just... human. And humans make mistakes. The only fault of the 3 women in the title was their curiosity and they got severely punished for it. Women should be allowed to be flawed and have room to grow and NOT to be scrutinised by society which happens all the time ESPECIALLY to famous women. The girls are singing "I'm a mess mess mess in distress" and "I wish for what's forbidden". You can summarise it the way I heard people say it these days: "I support women's rights but also women's wrongs".
except psyche becomes a god, and bluebeard's wife gets his title and her family splits his wealth. (Her family comes and beats him to death in the oldest versions). Eve... not sure what she got? Knowledge of good and evil? I mean.... she did get that in the end...
@@cheshirenevande4701I’m not sure what your response has to do with the OP. Curiosity doesn’t always result in someone “getting” something. At first I thought you were replying to the statement of “we’re all human” since you mentioned the one individual becoming a god, but the other two don’t have to do with not being human. So I tried to sort out what you were challenging and no such luck, as everything could be true at the same time.
Agreed re: curiosity.
This is something I have to remind myself of every once in a while - that stories/concepts aren’t always multiple layers deep. Commentary on a general topic could simply reference something in passing and, well, that’s the end of it. EP&TBW may be that kind of piece.
Edited to add: Not to mention, it gets people interested in looking up the references in the songs and they end up learning about older art, at the least. And if they dig in even further, they develop and engage their critical thinking skills.

I mean those three women did get a reward at the end: Eve did get the knowledge of good and evil, Psyche became a god and does get Eros, and in the older versions Bluebeard's wife actually lives (her family comes and kills him) and her family shares his wealth and she gets his title. So these women do suffer...but they get what they wanted.

The song’s title “Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard’s wife” is a reference to 3 mythological female figures.
Eve refers to the biblical character who’s known for her role in the banishment of her and Adam from the Garden of Eden.
Psyche is the Greek goddess of the soul whose beauty caused her elder sisters and the goddess Aphrodite to envy her. She was originally a mortal princess who married Aphrodite’s son, Eros, and was granted immortality.
Bluebeard’s wife is a character from a French folktale titled “Bluebeard.” Bluebeard is a wealthy man who murdered 6 of his previous wives, and when his present wife finds out about his twisted nature he threatens to kill her but is instead killed by his wife’s brothers and sister. The surviving wife inherits all his wealth after his death, which she uses to burry his previous 6 wives and have her siblings married, before re-marrying herself.
What these 3 characters have in common is that they are all women whose curiosity is blamed for causing their misfortune.
Eve is known as the first woman according to the bible’s story of origin. She was created by God as Adam’s (the first man) counterpart, and the two lived in the Garden of Eden. They were permitted to eat the fruits of all the trees except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve is tempted by a talking serpent to eat the forbidden fruit, and she gave some to Adam, who also ate it. God cursed all three: the man to a lifetime of hard labour followed by death, the woman to the pain of childbirth, and the serpent to go on his belly and suffer the enmity of both man and woman, before banishing them from the Garden.
Psyche was treated unfairly by Aphrodite due to her beauty. She would give Psyche tasks to carry out after discovering that she had married the goddess' son, Eros, with the fourth task involving her to travel to the Underworld to retrieve a sample of Persephone’s (Hade’s wife and the goddess of Spring) beauty. When returning, Psyche’s curiosity got the best of her, and she opened the golden box containing the beauty only to find a cloud of darkness that put her in a deep sleep. With the help of Eros and Zeus, Psyche awoke from her slumber and was granted with immortality, with Aphrodite then warned by Zeus to never harm Psyche again.
Bluebeard’s wife is the only nameless character of the 3. She is given a key by her husband Bluebeard who is a wealthy man, and is told that she’s able to open any room, each of which contain some of his riches, except for an underground chamber that he strictly forbids her to enter. When he leaves to go to the palace, she invites her sister, friends, and cousins over. She then sneaks away from them, and out of curiosity she uses the key to enter the forbidden chamber. There she discovered the corpses of her husband’s 6 previous wives hanging on hooks from the walls. Her husband returns and threatens to kill her once he finds out what she’s discovered. The story ends with the wife’s brothers and sister killing Bluebeard, freeing the wife who inherits his riches.
Each story can be interpreted in this way: The forbidden fruit containing knowledge that was eaten by Adam and Eve, the golden box containing the sample of beauty that was opened by Psyche, and the key used by Bluebeard’s wife to discover the true nature of her husband, can all be a metaphor for women breaking society’s rules (by doing what they’ve been told not to do).
LE SSERAFIM including these characters who represent women disobeying the rules set for them (by society) links to the title of their album “UNFORGIVEN.” The characters mentioned may not be forgiven by some for what they did, but they don’t need to be because the actions caused by their curiosity allowed them to see the truth that was hidden by them.
Psyche also has another instance of her curiosity getting the best of her in other versions of this story. She falls for Eros with him being invisible to her. They truly love each other dearly, but his only request is for her to not look at his face when they're together in bed. One day her sisters visit her and get jealous of her life, so they convince her to take a peek, saying Eros must be a terrible monster if he wishes to keep his face hidden at all times. Curious, she disobeys him and looks at his face when he's sleeping after they had a night together. She's shocked by his beauty. But he wakes up and finds what she did, which results in many other misfortunes until they can finally be together again

I love this song, I am also a new fan of le sserafim, started at blizzcon last november, I saw them live doing Perfect Night and other songs, including meeting them and watching them play overwatch as well, great way to get introduced to a new group, a live performance.

Oh shit, I didn’t recognize the painting, so the image of a man covering his face and turning away from a woman reaching towards him in entreaty made me think it was Cupid and Psyche, in the immediate aftermath of Psyche lighting the candle and looking at Cupid 😮 that’s really cool that he was able to recognize it so easily!

Society being the cause of downfall for those women is hardly the case.
Eve went against the rules set in place by an almighty being, non-gendered being as well I should add. According to the mythology there was no society to speak of either.
Psyche got her man in the end along with immortality after completing the tasks given to her.
Bluebeard's wife didn't suffer a downfall either. She killed her husband and took his fortune. Bluebeard was a bad person who had killed his previous wives, but again, not a downfall and not due to society. As mentioned briefly in the video, there are versions where she dies as well, but it's a folk tale so anything goes, really.
Basically, the only thing they all have in common is that they were tricked to some extent and were curious.

I enjoyed your musical analysis, especially your keen recognition of background sounds and key elements dissection.
As for the song per se, I kinda liked it, especially the catchy and sample-driven club house pattern, until the "girls wanna have fun" final ending boost, as melodical and pleasant as nails on chalkboard.
On a more serious note, I'm not a fan of k-pop industry clouting about female empowerment and women representation in society, as it is one of the most vile and demanding in terms of personal mental health and absurdly comical beauty standards. It feels akin to Trump lecturing me on how to respect women. I prefer to be empowered by other kind of feminist literature, if that makes sense 😊
