Just like life itself. Woman wants a divorce and can't wait to get out of her marriage and rid herself of her husband, but will gladly take half of her ex-husbands money as she walks out the door. Spoiled children complain about mommy and daddy, all while letting the parents pay for college, the apartment, and the car they drive. People will complain about a two-faced friend, but don't have a problem spending a weekend at the two-faced friend's beach or lake house, eating the friend's food, swimming in the friend's pool, and riding in the friend's car.

    Couple things.
    1. Look at Bobby’s face when the parents reamed JR out. He actually felt a bit sorry for him. JR seriously took it for granted how good a brother Bobby was.
    2. That also brings up the point how strong the family was. The night Bobby confronted JR, and Jock and Ellie hear them argue, they all wanted to kill JR. Jock got a rare pessimism over their chances, and JR looked absolutely sunk. Next morning, however, they are all in the office looking at assets, negotiating with the banker, and coming up with ideas. When Jock wanted to sell the leases, Bobby took up for JR. The 80s marketed this show as wealth, blackmail, and all that, and it had that, but it had a brilliant backstory of a family that constantly had each other’s back despite it all.
    3. JR’s story is simple. Jock taught him everything, but he loved Bobby more. He doesn’t have Bobby’s looks or athleticism, he’s not as tough as Jock, and Mama had Gary. All he had was smooth charm and an insane desire to succeed. Just ridiculous hustle. JR was way more like Cliff than he ever would want to admit. JR was Cliff with more resources, but he had to work just as hard.

His saying "Isn't anyone going to thank me for making us billionaires?" was the worst thing that he could have said. If JR had said, instead, "I'm sorry and I was wrong in taking such a huge risk with his family's home and been sincere about it maybe his parents would have been kinder towards him.

wild 72 I’ve never really realized as hard JR’s mother could have been with him. The most likely it's probably she didn t like her eldest son ! She was a « farmer’s girl », she didn’t like the oil 😉

Jock's attitude during this period, toward JR and Bobby, when each of them was made president of Ewing Oil, seems to have been, "I told you to run Ewing Oil, what makes you think you're running Ewing Oil?"

this was a subtle look into JR's psychology. His family stabbed him in the back a bit.. JR did what he was taught by his Dad... and his mother ignores his motivations and concentrates on his methods. Throws her usual bullshit Southworth bromides. I hated Miss Elly. Never bought her as JR's mother... she jumped his ass too often... too quickly.

Yes., but keep in mind that Jock told JR not to do the Oil Deal in Southeast Asia and he didn't listen to Daddy. Even in The Old School Books, Jock knew that if JR was the way he was, it was his fault. He also may have realized he was "harder" on him to make him pay for what Gary did running off and the like.

They don't see it that way. Also remember in The Old School Dallas Book, Lupe knew the real reason why Jock & Miss Ellie got married and it was Miss Ellie's insistence that they had Mexican Staff. I'm sure they got paid some Big Bank and who knows maybe they were able to send Cash to Family in Mexico to help them out. Remember when The Ewings got held hostage. The Staff were in El Paso at a Fiesta to celebrate Mexican Pride.
