JR was witty, charismatic and could be quite likeable if you were inside with him, but a scene like this reminds you what a wretched cruel man he could be. It's actually quite a difficult scene to watch. Arguably the last great season of Dallas.

@@thomasmcgorry2176 Yes, we all know J.R is not a good guy. Cliff is almost as bad. He's a smug, arrogant petty little man who will manipulate people including his own family just to get an unjustified revenge against the Ewings. That's why I never felt bad for him whenever J.R. shat on him

He made JR charming and surprisingly likeable much of the time. Despite all the evil things he did. Jim Bowie in real life was the same way. He did some truly horrible things. Womanizer, slave trader being just two examples. Yet, he was so charming that the very same people who hated what he did, usually spoke very fondly of the man himself.

One of the things that I love about this scene, is the J.R. is just giving it to him, but never mentions Sly. It would have been so easy for him to say something like, '...and trying to leverage my secretary against me.' He never does because he doesn't want any trouble to fall on Sly's brother, not that he has ever met the brother, but he knows how hurt Sly would have been. Sure J.R. has connections with judges and politicians, but he knew that Cliff could possibly find away to hold up those hearing forever. He never gambles with Sly.

Poor Cliff. I was re-watching the early seasons recently and Cliff is actually charming, black hair, great smile, a noble figure, comes off as a John/Robert Kennedy type a charismatic guy just wanting to do good things, like the anti-JR. The sort that walks into a room and people notice him and think he has a bright future. And you look at him there, he's a shell of a man, grey hair, talks in a unclassy manner, half drunk. He was dragged into a war that is eating him alive. Who knew that the guy from Season 1 would become that.

The fact that they had Cliff beat JR on this setup was the beginning of the end for Dallas. It was bad enough that they ALWAYS had Bobby get over on JR given how much more ruthless and experienced JR was but when they started letting Cliff beat JR as a businessman (remember his background was in the legal world not the business world) in the oil business everybody should have seen the handwriting on the wall. Nothing but nothing beat Dallas into the ground faster than having everybody and anybody outsmarting old JR.
