I'm just now rewatching the Season 1 mini-series before getting into the rest of the show. Jock was an awesome character. Smart, tough, ruthless, blunt, honest, driven yet moral, quietly generous and absolutely loyal to and protective of his family. Dude was a multi-millionaire oil man and head of the biggest independent oil company in Texas and he loved ranching, drinking, fighting, hunting and finding oil. A man's man and the only man JR completely feared and respected.
Jock was a true gentleman. There are men out there like this but they are very few and far between. Sad but true. I strive to be like Jock Ewing every day. I love my family. I don't have a wife and kids but I have my mom, my stepdad, my sister, and my nieces. Everything I do, I do for them to show that I am becoming the man that my family wants and more. Family is everything. When you lose your family, whatever the reason may be, you don't have much. However, you still got their memories.
I was watching an old Bette Davis movie and didn't recognize the love interest as Jim Davis. He aged like fine wine, handsome and that voice! He was perfect in Dallas. RIP

Jock was, by far, the best character on the show. Several were great, but he was the greatest. I sat on the edge of my seat during his scenes. And later in life, around 2000, I would come to acquire a 1978 Lincoln Continental exactly like Jock's in the exact same color, with the exact same interior.

JR was the best character, and the one character the show couldn't do without. Bobby was a great character too, as was Miss Ellie. Also, in their own ways, Sue Ellen and Cliff were both very deep and interesting characters. Both were highly flawed, and still likeable in some ways. Jock was a huge part of the show no doubt, but the show still thrived without him. It was never the same, but they still found a way to thrive. One of the most important parts of the Jock character though, was the fact that JR's character drew all of his motivation from Jock. JR''s constant need to run Ewing Oil like his father did, and to please his father...etc, etc. Jock was the only person who could strike true fear, respect and love into JR. Sure, JR loved, respected and feared his mother Ellie too, but it wasn't the same as his constant idolization and need to please his father. Even after Jock was gone, JR's need to please him and make proud never ceased.

He really made this show and Dallas was never the same when he died. Ellie was the epitome of a good woman; she also kept her family first and taught her sons the value of family, hard work and respect. Although JR failed in many of those aspects. This was still an amazing show. One of the best.
The Barnes and Donna were (implied) Democrats, as was Sam and Dave Culver. Sam was Jock's first lawyer, and later on Jock appeared at a Dave Culver rally in Season 4. Earlier on, Jock and JR also supported candidates for public office against Cliff (likely a Republican). So I think - like most business folks - Jock tended to shift from Democrat to Republican as his interests required.

In my opinion the fictional character, Jock Ewing, was three-dimensional -- a complex mixture of good and evil. You don't have to either like or dislike Jock to have respect and admiration for how skillfully Jim Davis played that character. Not even Charlton Heston or John Wayne could have performed that role as well as he did.
Jim Davis and his wife became very close to Victoria Principle because she reminded them of their daughter who died years before. So every scene with Jock and Pam seem very special.
In the early 2000s they had a reunion show and Entertainment Tonight interviewed some of them. When Victoria started talking about Jim she started to cry and they had to stop.
One thing that I really love about the character Jock Ewing was his straightforwardness and directness. He wasn't politically correct, and he didn't play word games. He was a straight shooter. He was blunt, and told the truth and to hell with anybody who didn't like it.

The last clip showed Jock in emotional turmoil about telling Miss Ellie that Ray is his son. These two actors had amazing chemistry and they fit perfectly together like a glove. I miss TV like this.

Jock was a handsome older man. wow he was really something in this show. he was in a lot of westerns and Im always seeing him and Kurt Russell and Kurts dad in a lot of westerns. Jock was hard but gentle and i loved his character but so upset when he died.
I was too young for Jim, but he made the show that it was. At one point, he was the star of the show (along with Barbara Bel Geddes, even Larry Hagman, who saved it) until both Barbara & Larry took over and their characters were vital to "Dallas," after he (Davis) had passed away. A combination of the character of both evil/good, Jock was always the kind of man who loved his Ewing boys, even more so, his business. But had left too early.
They toyed with it when they brought on Steve Forrest. There was MAJOR fan backlash so they made his character an imposter. In fact they didn't explain much he just got written off.
When Jim Davis passed away suddenly, it seems a lot of the spark went out of the series. It was never quite the same again. Howard Keel is a good enough actor. But bringing him into the show as Ellie's second husband, just never really made it as a Dallas character. Instead, we had silly storylines such as a man claiming to be Jock Ewing, and a contrived plot involving JR and Bobby contest for control of Ewing Oil.
This original Dallas series is still so much better than the 2012 - 2014 reboot series . The acting was better , the storylines were better , and had great characters , like Jock , for example .
If I'm not mistaken, Jim Davis holds the Guinness record for an actor who's appeared in the most westerns. There will never be another character like Jock Ewing or a show like Dallas. When Jim Davis died,they should have ended the character Jock Ewing. Instead they dragged it out with Steve Forrester claiming he was the long lost Jock Ewing who was lost in the jungle with Punk Anderson & then got plastic surgery to change his appearance. WTF!!! I miss jock I was just a kids but this was a good show with everyone in their places 😢
Jack was about my favorite character on the whole show I really wish he would have been around a lot longer I think he really made the show what it is even though Jr did a really good job too I mean all they're all of them have their own special part

Jock was the old school oil man, as long as you stayed loyal and honest with him you’d be in his good graces. But if you tried to double deal him or try to mess with the Ewing family he’d go to war! Plus squaring up with him is like standing up against a lion or a grizzly!

Jim Davis toiled for decades in TV and low budget movies until he became Jock Ewing and then it was so short. Life truly isn't fair. I loved Jim Davis, he was gold

Jock was a handsome older man. wow he was really something in this show. he was in a lot of westerns and Im always seeing him and Kurt Russell and Kurts dad in a lot of westerns. Jock was hard but gentle and i loved his character but so upset when he died.

I was too young for Jim, but he made the show that it was. At one point, he was the star of the show (along with Barbara Bel Geddes, even Larry Hagman, who saved it) until both Barbara & Larry took over and their characters were vital to "Dallas," after he (Davis) had passed away. A combination of the character of both evil/good, Jock was always the kind of man who loved his Ewing boys, even more so, his business. But had left too early.

As a young man, I always wondered why Jock Ewing was never recasted. Now, looking back, I see why. Jim Davis was that dude!
They toyed with it when they brought on Steve Forrest. There was MAJOR fan backlash so they made his character an imposter. In fact they didn't explain much he just got written off.

When Jim Davis passed away suddenly, it seems a lot of the spark went out of the series. It was never quite the same again. Howard Keel is a good enough actor. But bringing him into the show as Ellie's second husband, just never really made it as a Dallas character. Instead, we had silly storylines such as a man claiming to be Jock Ewing, and a contrived plot involving JR and Bobby contest for control of Ewing Oil.
This original Dallas series is still so much better than the 2012 - 2014 reboot series . The acting was better , the storylines were better , and had great characters , like Jock , for example .
I didn't find this out till recently, but Ray was supposed to turn out the be Jock's son as early as the mini-series. one of the producers nixed itt.

If I'm not mistaken, Jim Davis holds the Guinness record for an actor who's appeared in the most westerns. There will never be another character like Jock Ewing or a show like Dallas. When Jim Davis died,they should have ended the character Jock Ewing. Instead they dragged it out with Steve Forrester claiming he was the long lost Jock Ewing who was lost in the jungle with Punk Anderson & then got plastic surgery to change his appearance. WTF!!! I understand not wanting to lose a strong,main character like Jock,but c'mon. They should have said he died in the plane crash with Punk & given him a
final sendoff episode. How many agree with me ?
