  • This video is a warning for anyone in the market to buy a Toyota bettween the years of 2006 and 2013. There is a known rattle on cold starts that is a very expensive fix. People describe it as a rattle, metal on metal, knock, or clatter that is loud and aparant during cold starts. If not repaired it could destroy your engine. However, there are MANY MANY people with this problem who have ignored the issue and have continued to drive their car for over 100,000 miles without ANY issues. I have found one person who HAS destroyed their engine resulting from this issue. T-SB-0041-13 You can call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 if you are having this issue and report a claim. If you are considering buying a toyota in this year make sure you listen for this noise during a COLD START!!! Don't let a dealer tell you it's normal or even start the car before you get there to avoid this noise! The noise has been known to start anywhere from 7,000 miles to 70,000 miles to 150, 000 miles!
    Cars that have this issue are Toyota Highlander, Toyota Camry, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Sienna, Toyota Venza. There are others but look out for these!

    I have a 08 Highlander with this V6 engine and have changed the oil every 5,000 miles faithfully with full synthetic oil. I've never had this noise on cold starts. Still 15 years later with 243,000 miles it runs like new. Just recently I was getting a puff of blue smoke on startup, most likely from the valve seals getting hard, but after one treatment of AT 205 Reseal, thanks to Scotty's recommendation, the problem is gone!

    My 2010 rav4 3.5 has been making a similar noise, but it's worse on rainy days. It doesnt go away quickly at all on wet days, but takes time to diminish.
    Dont confuse this with another issue I found out about. The AC clutch can have a slow bearing wear that can make an awful sound off and on like this and is common on these 3.5 engines. Been going on since I've had it for past 4 years. Dealer found no issue. I've gotten used to it, but saw another video on here explaining this issue. Made sense.
    Sometimes there is no noise at all then rainy day it sounds awful.
    Nature of a beast.

    Thanks for the honesty. I had an early production '08 Highlander that developed this issue at 48K. Purchased new and dealer maintained, all oil change records. The dealers (3) all lied to me, wouldn't fix it ('couldn't duplicate the problem' - 'it's a truck engine') despite a known TSB at the time. Car also had low-speed transmission float-shifting issues that went away with a rear brake flash recall, blew a high pressure oil hose, also a recall but they fixed that, and lots of rattles. Toyota wanted me to pay almost $6K to fix it (well within warranty) I never saw anything like this so I dumped it at 64K before warranty ran out and got a great price from someone who thought Toyotas were bulletproof. Bad corporate policy. Bye.

    Most of them do it. Don’t be alarmed by this video. It’s just the low pressure and some wear of the VVT actuation pin. Only worry if it does it every morning and takes longer than 2 sec to stop. Oil changes and right viscosity do help!

    I have a 2006 solara convertible that does this exact problem. I've tried marvel mystery oil and lucus and I use mobile 1 oil. I got this car from my mother-in-law for free with 184,000, it has done this since I got it. I thought maybe when the timing belt was done it may have been off a tooth, but when I did the timing belt at 200,000. It was were it was supposed to be. I just turned 251,00 and the car still runs great. It can be loud as hell at times and cause people to look, but it runs flawlessly. If it should go, depending on my situation maybe just throw a junkyard engine in it for about a $1000 or scrap it, but for free to a car that has given me 67,000 miles, no real complaints here except for principle, Toyota engines aren't supposed to do this, stupid problems are reserved for American cars. Lol.... and I know that personally, I own a Corvette, cool car, but what a headache. If u own a Toyota that does this don't sweat it, but avoid buying one with this known issue, unless it's a super good deal, $1000 or less. Just my 2 cents, I love Toyota and Lexus, best cars for the money, no car company is perfect, but Toyota is pretty damn close.

    I have a 2007 Toyota RAV4 V6 that I've been driving with the cold start rattle for over two years. Current mileage is 115K miles. Gradually, it got to the point that the rattle occurred with every cold start. This issue is primarily focused on the VVT gear assembly and oil control valve, along with the recall on the VVT oil line (replacing the rubber with an all-metal line). Not sure how the poster is mixing in loose bolts on the VVT cover (not an inherently related issue) coming loose.
    The decision point on getting the 'time bomb' 2GRE cold start rattle issue fixed is one's overall view on keeping the car as well as the overall vehicle serviceability. Indeed, it is expensive because of the size of the V6 in the engine compartment requiring it to be removed. While the parts themselves are comparatively cheap (using ONLY Toyota OEM or AISIN), it's 20 hours labor to remove the engine, effect repair and replace the engine. In my case, this car is the best vehicle I've ever owned, and its 2GRFE V6 engine is probably the best V6 made by anyone ... ever. It's just that, unfortunately, the 2GRFE (and other 2GR variants) had the 'birth defect' of the VVT problem from years 2006 through 2012. Otherwise, I've taken immaculate care of the vehicle and for its years, it is low-mileage. I am keeping this vehicle, no matter what other vehicle I might purchase, and on that note, any new vehicle I'd want to purchase equates to an eight to 12 month wait. So, rather than sit on the time bomb for upwards to a year, I am "repurchasing" my own 'quality pre-owned' car by having its repairs done. This includes new lower front control arms and front struts because they were due anyway, and insofar as the VVT repair, since the engine is out, I'm due new spark plugs and a new water pump.
    I have a great independent repair shop, including a Toyota specialist with 40 years experience. The vehicle went into the shop on August 14th, and after waiting a week and a half for the VVT gear assembly to be sourced and delivered, I picked her up on the 25th. Rattle gone, engine is strong, quiet and I can wait out the sh*t show of the new car market. How much did that cost? $6,800.00 for another 100k+ miles. These 2d Gen RAVs are among the best cars Toyota ever made; the V6 still gets around 27mpg hwy/24 city and I just couldn't rationalize, "skipping it" for the sake of infotainment, lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring in something new at $40k and up.

    My brand new 2017 Corolla powered by the 2ZR-FE engine started doing this on my second oil change after accumulating 10,000 kms. Toyota, in my country, refused to acknowledge this as a problem, terming it as being 'normal' and refused to fix it under warranty. That's despite following a strict maintenance regime as per the guidelines in the owner's manual and warranty book. Always purchased TGMO and genuine air and oil filters and had the maintenance carried out from Toyota 3s dealership. It's still low mileage and only makes the rattling sound when started cold or if it has sat for at least 2 hours; only 31000 kms on the dial. That's like 19000 or so miles. Still brand new. No performance issues at all... runs like a clock. Having said that, there's always this fear at the back of mind that something might go wrong. And that's driving me crazy! No more Toyotas for me in the future.

    Toyota in there v6 3.3L vvti. They are designed with the piston diameter slightly smaller than the combustion chamber. It is by design. After your engine warms up. The piston and combustion chamber snug right up. This is the slight engine tick. When the engine block is cold.
    Traditional engine are built with snug piston and combustion chamber. They don’t allow for the thermal expansion. Whereas Toyota is designed with this in mind.

    The cam phaser replacement, if your timing chain and tensioners are still in good shape from regular 5K oil changes, costs about $1300. If your mechanic wants to replace the timing chain, tensioners, etc. “while he’s in there”, then your $3.5-5K cost figures (the book rate hours for a timing chain replacement are about 20 hrs.), are about right.

    Clean the oil screen over the banjo fitting of the oil line that goes into the top of the motor. Clean vvt solenoids. Replace valve cover gaskets but primarily just so you can replace the double O Rings under the valve covers around the oil passageways. These conponents get clogged/leak and the vvt system doesnt get the proper lubrication and oil pressure needed so you get this sound at cold start. Common problem. Common engine. Nothing to be alarmed about but it can damage your vvt system if not addressed

    Great video and info!! I may have a fix my neighbor has a 2013 Highlander V6 Limited 230 thousand miles Mostly highway he’s taking care of his truck the whole life or changes tuneups air filters and he came over to me about a week ago with this problem and I said well sounds like the timing chain Slappin well then I did a little research and saw your video and I said maybe not. One of the things that I have done for years in my wife’s car and my trucks and my cars because every time I change the oil I’ll take a half a bottle of seafoam and I pour it in with the oil to help keep the inside of my engine clean and it does a damn good job at it. So I ended up changing oil putting are installed a half a bottle of seafoam he ran the truck for three days and it sounded like the noise was almost gone so I said let’s change the oil one more time and let’s put some more seafoam in it that’s what I did the noise is about gone and I think if he drives it for another week or so it maybe will be gone!! Instead of thicker oil you need something that’s going to get in there and help lubricate and clean any sludge or anything else that’s around that pen and I think this might be the trick I’ll keep you updated in the next couple of weeks and let you know if the noise come back or stays the same or goes away thank you sir

    2 treatments of seafoam engine oil flush fixed my 2007 rav4 v6 with 200k miles. Put 1/2 can of seafoam 250 miles before oil change. Before that I have had this noises for at least 3 years and 40k miles. I think what it did was unsticking the cam lock pin that gummed up with sludge and varnish. It has been at least a couple months now since I last heard the rattle noise. Now I think if I had left the sea foam in longer it would probably had acted more quickly.

    • @PAT111
      @PAT111 4 года назад +3

      JRESHOW the frequency of the noise occurrence dropped right after I put 1/2 can in the oil the first time. I left it in for 250 miles before I changed out the oil. But the noise returned as soon as I did that. I drove another 4500 miles and put the rest of the 1/2 can of sea foam 250 miles before the next oil change. The same thing happened. Lot less noise for that 250 miles and noise returned right after oil change. I been using pennzoil ultra 5w30 and TOYOTA filler the last 7 years. However not until a few weeks later I suddenly realized I didn’t hear that start up noise anymore. And the noise has been gone since then. I ran 1/2 can of sea foam once more for 250 miles before the change just for the hack of it. I think sea foam must have loosen up some gunks and varnish because the new oil with only 30 miles has turned brown rather quickly when I took a look under the oil cap. Now I have been without the noise for a couple months now without sea foam, just pennzoil ultra 5w30.
      I should probably have left sea foam in oil longer than 250 miles. Sea foam says it can be added at anytime before the oil change. It probably would have eliminated the noise more quickly.
      The used oil filters didn’t look any more dirtier than before so I think most of the gunks and varnish were dissolved into the oil not caught by the filter.

    • @JRESHOW
      @JRESHOW  4 года назад +3

      Patrick L thanks a lot for all that! It gives me a much better explanation :). Going to add the sea foam foam now at 2k (on the oil) and run it till 3k and then change the oil. I’ll update with my results!

    So much for Toyota reliability. I do believe the Japanese build reliable engines and cars but I find it ridiculous when people put blind faith into a brand. I have often heard people bash BMWs here in North America but guess what, while living in Europe, I personally had a 2005 BMW 120d with almost 312000kms without any issues and then had one of the newer 2016 120d and had it running like a clock without any issues until approx 160000kms.
    Another Japanese manufacturer that has issues is Mitsubishi and even Honda (particularly their automatic transmissions).
    Just don't go blindly for a Japanese car or manufacturer, research into the specific model, year and engine/transmission options you are looking for. You will be surprised how some times a European car is better built and more reliable than a Japanese car.

      The problem your worry about is a disign in the engineer of the engine.
      After you drive your vehicle to the shop your vehicle is warm.
      The design of Toyota engines the 2005-current v6 3.3 vvti. The entrance are design with the Pistons being slightly smaller than the combustion chamber. Does this allows for thermal expansion after your engine warms up. After your engine warms up, the tick goes away.
      Traditionally, the engine is designed with the pistons and the combustion chamber snug, which does not allow for thermal expansion. Which leads to earlier engine failure.

I used 0-30 not 0-20 per toyota recommended. I do not care any more. I flushed the engine oil 3-4 times and it is still noise. Toyota is not very quiet engine any more. I bought it used and I put 20k miles since it was 119k. I drove it more than 2 years. The cam gear noise when first started is exactly what you said in the video, because the oil was drained back to the pan. I hate this, I think Toyota intended to make this cheap cam gear causing the oil drain back to the oil pan or quality control is sucked and bad parts are out there. To replace all 4 cam gear, VVT-i cam gear is alot of money. because of the labor and parts. But even it's been repair. the repair warranty is only one year. It is sucked.

      @Wilson Emeka dude, I'm not a dispatcher at RUclips. 0W-20 OK for 2008 Highlander, did not see any pros or cons. Only good thing is I don't need to buy different types of oil every time, all my cars 0W-20. Costco is the cheapest, good luck

    My 2011 RAV4 does this also. On a cold start. it's loud as shit.....sounds terrible! You hear engine knocking for just 1 or 2 seconds, then it sounds fine. It's got 180k miles on it now and started doing it at about 120K?...maybe 100k, not sure but it's been a while! It actually has a few issues with noise which are also pretty common from what I'm hearing...

    I have a 2014 Toyota Camry and my mom Has. 2013 Toyota RAV4 both with the 4cyl engine. And they both make that sound Toyota say they can’t replicate the sound. Seems like everyone is having this problem I’m just going to live with it.

    My 2011 Toyota camry makes this EXACT noise.. And I am starting to notice that sometimes the car will not start for a couple turns, does your do this???..... Are you saying if I take it in now, that it would cost that much??
    And I might add it only does this on cold starts NOT once it's warm.

    Have a 2008 Highlander and this DEFINITELY happens. Not only that it leaks oil now. A mechanic said it could be engine seals which is also gona cost a ton of money. Anyway...nice vid

    I have a 2011 Rav4 with the same issue. It's at 160,000 now. It had 129,000 when I bought it. The dealer say it was nothing. I had him take it to the garage he takes his cars to and, they said the same thing!!! Liars!!! Now it's at 160,000 and, the rattle is constant!!! Covid completely destroyed my credit so, can't even trade it in!!! My finance company said to get it diagnosed and, apply for a refinancing. Doomsday is Monday when I see what the total cost is going to be!!!! Where do I sign to get on the list???lol!!!

    Just fit a switch to cut out the ignition for 30 seconds so it still cranks but does not fire. The oil pump will send oil to the top of the motor at low cranking speed. Then start as normal once the top of the engine is oiled up. Problem solved.

    I bought a pre-owned 2017 a few months ago with 19000 kms (11,000 miles). It makes the same sound at start-up for a second or two.
    I had a Nissan 240 that made the same sound got worse over time, it was the timing chain. The Nissan had over 300,000kms however, and very few oil changes (my bad).
    I learned my lesson, synthetic oil and on schedule. So my question is could it be the timing chain with such low kms and frequent oil changes? I hope not timing chain $$$$$$$

      Nissan has had problems since early 2000's when they sold out to Renault. For years Nissan made the best engine on the market (VQ30) but when they made it a (VQ35/40) its been crap ever since due to low grade chains, rings and bearings in them. My nephews been a Nissan mech 25yrs and told me all about it, drives nothing but Toyota's now btw.
      I have two VQ30 engines today with over 300k miles that never burn oil, never made cam/chain noise, never had early timing belt/chain failure but the VQ35/40 are built with very low grade parts through and through after 2000 and it is what it is!!! They were sued over it but never changed anything but how things are written to cover they're arse. Still junk oil burners today just like Mitsubishi has been for decades who btw is also owned by Renault! Imagine that....

    Was this noise and the oil cooler line repaired for 2012 to 2013? Or should the second generation be avoided altogether?

  • @harryballz6358
    @harryballz6358 2 года назад

    Lucas has its place but never run Lucas in a newer car especially in colder temps. Todays cars have a hydraulic timing chain/belt tensioner your oil must flow very easily through or it fails to fully extend fast enough on startup. By not fully extending quickly enough it allows an engine to jump time and is catastrophic on interference engines, today most engines are interference. In fact all Nissan engines are interference design. The colder the temp is, the thicker the oil is so the slower the oil flows, do not gamble on it just over some noise.

  • @landshass2849

    That's normal. Once the oil lubes the chain the sound goes away.

    • @JRESHOW
      @JRESHOW  3 года назад +1

      I’d call it more like common. Mine didn’t do it once until about 150k miles. Some start sooner, some later. But it is very common. Sound does go away once oil runs though.
