My daughter complained of a whine coming from her 2006 Toyota Highlander. The whine was loud, could be heard from inside and outside the vehicle, and would speed up and slow down with the engine RPMs. Toyota is known to have a lound engine whine when a certain part goes bad. In this video I show you how to trouble shoot a loud alternator whine. Make sure you do this first before spending money on expensive parts. This is an easy troubleshoot technique and takes less than 30 seconds to get results.

Will this sound get louder with acceleration cause my buddy has this same vehicle and says the engine has a weird sound but gets louder when hitting the gas

Great question. The sound is not necessarily a problem, but it is identifying an alternator that is going/is bad and could leave you stranded at any minute. Personally, I wouldn’t chance it (not in a daily driver).
