  • I believe this to be footage from the world featherweight title bout between two legendary fighters: Abe Attell, who was in around 28 'world' title fights before this, and Johnny Kilbane who woould go on to appear in five more featherweight title bouts himself.
Many of these fights were made at the modern super bantamweight limit of 122lbs, much like this bout was. Thus, I choose to rank Attell and Kilbane primarily among the super bantamweights. How would Wilfredo Gomez fare with these two? Sound off in the comments.

This fight stems from the family of Johhny Kilbane whom had the reel and allowed a fight film collector to have the reel converted however there is still a portion of this film which cannot be converted because of damage to the film. A big thanks to the uploaded for sharing this historical film footage.

Abe attell defended his title 18 time in witch the record stood for a long time until esibieo Pedrosa broke it if I'm correct back in the 1980s thank you Fleaboxing you guys put on great fights thank you so much

Attell had 20 defenses of the title in his second reign

He did not have 18 title defenses. He had 14, 2 of which many critics don't count because his title was in dispute at the time.....

You always hear the comment that these guys couldn't compete today. After collecting films for over 40 years, that is CLEARLY not so. There were guys that wouldn't fare too well but you can say that about any era. There were guys; Greb, Robinson, Armstrong, Langford and many others, that not only would have did well, they would have dominated.
With THAT being said, I never hear any casual suggest how the fighters TODAY would have fared back then? I think some would have been okay. But I think most of the 3000 " champions" today wouldn't have cracked the top 10. My opinion but with a little research, I think you'll agree with me.

Do you have any tips for film collecting nowadays?

    • @constantine7382

@@The_Ex_Boxing_Nerd It's gotten a lot harder over the years. Everyone knows what they got now. Estate sales is where I have had the most luck. A lot of 8mm film out there. And don't just go for the bigger names. Sometimes, rarely, you'll find someone that isn't known at all ( or you don't know who it is and never will) but they are all treasures worth preserving. Good luck. If you find one or two originals, it's well worth the search.

@@constantine7382, Thank you for the estate sales tip. I've been scouring the internet in search of fights and have been posting them to my channel. I have been editing them so the segmented ones online are in one video and so that the sped up videos are closer to their real speeds.
I have a few questions about certain fights
The channel we are on has Mike O'Dowd vs. Mike Gibbons, but there is a watermark that comes and goes so if possible, I would obviously want to find it without a watermark to post to my own channel, but I cannot find any trace of the fight outside of this channel. Is this just a case of one person posting one of only a few surviving copies in the world?
There is a two minute clip of Archie Moore vs. Ron Richards posted on RUclips. The description of the video claims that they got it from a private collector who only allowed for a couple minutes of a much longer clip to be posted. Do you believe there is any good way to find a more complete version of this fight apart from going to Estate sales and hoping for the best? This goes for the "lost" Joe Louis films after he fought Ezzard and before Marciano.
And finally, do you have any rare or uncommon film in your collection that you would ever consider sharing with the world?

    • @constantine7382
      @constantine7382 Год назад

@@The_Ex_Boxing_Nerd I've never seen a copy of the Gibbons fight that didn't have some obvious problems in the film. We are probably looking at the same version.
We must talk to the same kind of people. I heard something similar about the Moore fight. I don't know who the collector is and it may be the only copy. Unsure why it wouldn't be released. It's a cool item but it's not exactly a Greb fight.
If you go to enough estate sales and auctions, you can run across some really interesting people that will help you along the way. I looked back at my original comment and seen that I left that most important point out. My apologies. It is not a huge group of collectors and most have a love for the sport and will help point you in the right direction. You seem to know your stuff so I don't need to warn you about the " sharks." Every hobby has them so don't get taken.
I don't have any film that would have been considered rare or even uncommon. I collect 8 mm, vhs mostly. Just for the sake of seeing every fighter I can see. And I've seen thousands. When I was young, I am ALMOST sure that I seen at least part of the Ray Robinson/Tommy Bell Welterweight Championship fight. I always look for that one and maybe I am wrong about seeing it. But I've had a Hell of a lot of fun looking.

I see McGrain every once in a bit, the other 2 not so much. Intentional Butt has also made a comeback of sorts lately he posts somewhat regularly again at least on fight nights, but he no longer does the RBR's. Still way too much us versus them race baiting/trolling though, still one of the best forums on the internet to discuss boxing with others who know what they're talking about. How do you feel about Mayweather vs McGregor? Excited about the Crawford vs Indongo card tonight? It's good to hear fro you again my man.

Gomez.. Coming from a Puerto Rican myself wasn't that smart of a boxer, good chin not a high ring IQ though these two Abe and Johnny Legends hall of famers that adapted well in the ring, beat countless top tens and champions in a Era of 1 belt and undisputed johnny has the longest lineal undisputed record of all time I believe, but looking at it, this was a time when inside fighters were dominate, even Benny Leonard who mastered the mover style was a inside fighting beast monster, kilbane had so much talent and skill I think no Era would bother him

@@altagraciaadames3483 He was the greatest super Bantam for sure. An absolute monster. But I have never seen a GREAT fighter so bothered by going up in weight. Those few extra pounds just made him lose that greatness at the higher weights. But I LOVED him where he belonged.
