Pep and Ray Leonard had sort of the same kind of elusiveness with their mastery of lateral movement. Pep is beautiful to watch. Two of the great feathers no doubt, Pep and Saddler
Saddler was hard as nails. Less being disqualified, he could probably take most welterweights of today. Its a shame that these guys, some of the best P4P ever, aren't included in games like Fight Night. It seems as though people don't remember fighters under welterweight throughout history. Many of these classic fights from lower weight classes are the best you could ask for.
***** He defeated Bartalo3x, Joyce2x, Ortiz, Terranova, Wright4x, Archibald2x, Wilson2x, etc...all before he was nearly killed and greatly injured in a plane crash. I seriously doubt that he fulley recovered.
@stevevandien Well actually Pep was far from his best here, he was past his prime and had broken his back in an airplane crash prior to his feud with Sadler. That just goes to show how great Will O The Wisp was, to come back after such a horrific injury and still cement his legacy.
@@harwn999- Saddler got dominated 3 out of 4 times they fought, he "won" twice by Pep injuring his shoulder in the 3rd fight and cheating by gouging and thumbing a cut above Pep's eye. Your boy needed the Goat to break his back in a plane crash before he could get anywhere near his level. 😂🤡
I have book on him. Its called "A biography of Sugar Ray Robinson -Pound for Pound" by Herb Boyd 3 (Helped along by Ray Robinson 2) - Published by Amistad - 2005. Tells you everything - what a book. But more importantly what a Boxer/fighter he was. He was a special to boxing as Bruce Lee is to Kung Fu. He did do things wrong in his private life which he could have done better. But in the ring we might never ever see a boxer fighter that good again. He was that good!
Pep is in the top 3 greatest pure boxers along with pernell whitaker and mayweather. Pep before his plane crash would have beaten saddler in the series.
You can't compare Pep to Mayweather you idiot. Pep was a defensive expert who also had a high work rate. Mayweather had zero work rate compared to Pep, resulting in very slow fights.
In some ways you actually can compare them, Pep and Mayweather were both excellent defensive experts with sharp counterstrikes. However, Pep often relied on his footwork and natural head movement, and also had a very high work rate (there's a reason his 2nd fight with Saddler won fight of the year). In contrast, Mayweather relied heavily on his shoulder guard, and always put his own safety before winning a fight. Have you ever seen a recent Mayweather fight that wasn't incredibly boring?
Sugar Ray Robinson beat Willie Pep in their amateur days. Sugar Ray Robinson is/was the greatest fighter/boxer in boxing history. The complete boxer.fighter who had everything.
great video, thanks for posting. 2 legends of Boxing, what a fight. Im looking for the 1949 fight between Pep and Saddler, it was Ring Magazine's fight of the year. enjoy boxing fans
Hi Foxygranpa7, Thanks very much for the history lesson and sharing your in-depth knowledge - much appreciated. I'll see if I can get a hold of the fight. On second thoughts I'm not sure I want to watch it knowing what the outcome will be...
Pep was winning this fight and most likely was going to win. This guy landed one good shot on him in 7 rounds. Pep was most likely up 5-2 at end of this round. He was basically in complete command of the fight.
@botfields_hardcoregamer6401 these same fools have said for years we can't judge srr cause he didn't have vids of his prime, but we have vids of louis in his and he fights like a 30s-40s fighter Look up him vs sammy angott george cliff tony freddie valentine andy nonnels and tony ancona that's him in his prime, does he not make the same novice like mistakes as the one we been seen?
Shame there's no Sandy Saddler type fighter around nowadays that could bring out the best in Loma. I don't think any current fighter can manipulate their opponents guard like Saddler did, Loma hasn't faced anything like that.
They should have had Pep lift weights for this return match. To increase his upper body strength. But those trainers back then didn't believe in weight training. Because they felt that it diminished the fighters' agility. Which is not true, but that's how they trained them back in the day.
If Floyd did this an entire fight, all the white fans would say “he was running. He’s a runner”… when pep does it, they call it superb boxing 😂😂😂 Europeans are hilarious
For some odd reason lunatics for years said pep was the greatest defense ever and had better defense than guys in 70s-90s,yet no match shows he ever was as advanced, they watch highlights only this looks like novices
4:41 - Saddler - "Let me finish this guy with a hook."
Pep - "Eat a jab."

100%. They only know a few names or its perceived as such. There were many great historical fighters. They need more light!
fighters from the past are soooo much tougher and more interesting 2 watch
Boy, that Pep was something. His movement is so pure and stylish...
He was great, really great.
Saddler beat him 3 times out of 4 lol so what does that say about Saddler?
*****

Saddler trained young George Foreman and you can see the resemblance. Cutting off the ring with hands out in front to parry.
Manipulating the opponents guard as well, i think that was as much a problem for Pep in these fights as Saddler's long reach and power.
It is a shame that there is no film of the second Pep-Saddler fight which is considered Pep's masterpiece...
I seen a short of it , they have some footage
People who don't know a thing about boxing would say Willie Pep ran from opponents.
He had some amazing footwork! Always within range yet difficult to even touch

Excuses. Lol he won after that. Saddler whooped him 3 times because he was the better fighter

Lateral movement is a lost art in boxing today.

Hard to find, like SRR at 147.
Saddler was a freak in that team very big for the featherweight division. He was a Lil over 5'8

Reminds me of Foster Hearns and Robinson. I guess basketball players with anorexia just have great power
I think Willie would have won this one...RIP Champ
MrCravat he lose 4 out 5 fights tho
When was the shoulder dislocated? The final seconds are very jumpy. Looks like a Tyson-Botha style armlock.

Pep was past his prime.
No he wasnt
When Pep did it the fighters were in their primes and he didn't duck anyone, big difference

It seems to me that Pep is just as dirty a fighter as Saddler.
Christopher David D. Hell no he wasnt
Christopher David D. Saddler couldnt beat him clean
Miles Miles they fought 5 times Sandy won 4
Willie pep would have been good at MMA, if only they had made a division for him.
A bit late started the count after Peps knockdown? Sure, he wasn't in any trouble but anyway
