Two amazing fighters.Willie was really one of the best ever, his timing and movement is so slick. Some complain in the comments here that he also fought people with negative records, this was in an era when men fought for real, none of this 6 months training camp. If you have over 200 fights, you are going to fight many poor and many good opponents. If it's not so great a thing, they could do it too? Maybe instead of getting chicken grease over their combat keyboard, they will show us :)
All of the Pep fights I have watched on here have 0 dislikes! He was an exceptional fighter, he had the best footwork and defense of just about any fighter in history.
That was a beautiful shift Willie does at 5:40 uses a left leg shift forward to throw all his weight in his shot. In O.S Westermans 1919 Counter back on Counter he covers this exact shift. At 7:25 he uses a left leg shift on offense. Shift the right and than shift the left. Wow this is great footage exactly how the book explains them.
Yes sir just google OS Westerman Counter back on Counter. The Intrenet Archives has it for free. Its also on an app called SCRIBD. One of the best books ive come across and ive seen quite a few rare old books..

@Hammerschlägen M What said is complete nonsense. Willie pep had over 200 fights and fought way better men than the modern day fighters. I highly doubt in today's boxing era there any trainer, boxer or whatever will be able to counter willie pep style.
@Hammerschlägen M You said his opponents would be better prepared do to rather pathetic reasons. He fought men who literally had 50+fights and constantly fighting on a monthly basis, their skills were constantly being sharpened and these guys were more seasoned than the average modern boxer. And remember his opponents would usually doing rematch clauses against Willie Pep more than once so they basically was constantly gaining knowledge in the ring with the REAL Willie Pep.So I truly don't know how or why his opponents would be better prepared when they basically be fighting multiple times a year against different and unique opponents and rematching their opponents constantly.
But what does my head in is people on here shouting what a great fighter he was by boxing and moving floyd does that and every one hates on him that's boxing at it's best
This was after Wille Pep was in a plane crash that made doctors tell him he would never walk again... let alone win a title and many more fights. He also had a lot less people to learn from; no videos, maybe a film here or there, but hardly the ocean of information, support, and coaching Mayweather has had. And Willie was a nice guy. After all that, I still think Mayweather is also awesome so I somewhat agree with you! People don't like his trouble with the law, hitting a woman maybe ( I don't follow that stuff much) but I have a rather unusual approach to all that; I only watch him box and don't really care about much else because I don't know him or walk in his shoes. All his other life is none of my business, and I can stop watching boxing if I want also... but I think Mayweather is a hell of a fighter and one of the best ever. So was Willie.
Boxing wise mayweather is a genius no doubt, its casuals. Mayweather and most fighters nowadays are douchey tho

The difference is, Willie fought. He was far more engaging and offensively frustrating than Floyd whose style is more passive. Pep went inside the men he fought, Floyd always stayed on the outside. Pep had more fights while Floyd belongs to an era of tayloring, cherry-picking and long building. This is why Pep is more appreciated by the folks you refer to. He was all about improvisation, adaptation, experimentation. Mayweather is a completely different boxer, physically, technically, mentally... so is his competition. Its not even the same sport anymore. Back in the day, you really had to dig, work, think, fight and want it. Today... meh... its sleepy. Only the lifestyles are flashy, but behind the cameras, that too is boring as hell. The sums of money are vast but what for? Most modern fighters lack charm and personality. They are also not that hungry. They don't even know what they want. There's hardly any fulfillment. And just like abbeykroeter said... WIllie Pep bounced back from a plane crash, had no footage to learn from or advanced coaches. Still, he owned it, remained nice throughout his career too, no trash acting, so that's also a factor to his liking. Willie Pep was never as protected as Floyd, that's another thing to consider.
