  • I drove over 3 hours to buy this exhaust when I heard that it existed. Was it worth it? Flyin' Miata previously sold several parts for the NC even though, now, they don't really do much with the platform. One of the parts they used to sell is an axle-back exhaust, and they were actually one of the first options on the market for the NC back in 2006. How does this retro exhaust compare against the Good-win Racing Super Q? Let's hit the canyons and find out.

5:50 It really does get loud lol, when I bought my NC the previous owner had installed a single 3" HKS Muffler, it was really loud and didnt even sound good , it somehow sounded like a bus at low rpms

Sounds good! Was this paired with a factory header and midpipe?

Sounds great. Always loved the NC's. Can you tell me what road that is? It’s beautiful. I’m in Orange County so I’m always looking for scenic drives. Thanks.✌️

I have a FM axleback / mid pipe on my NC with the Goodwin header. It is surprisingly quiet, and I wish it was louder.

I got an NC a year ago and switched out the factory muffler for a Yonaka axil-back muffler that's just the right sound for me and my neighborhood. I love the sound of yours.

I too have the Flyin Miata Supercharged axleback muffler on my 2006 GT MX-5. It was designed for high flow but quiet sounds for those that had forced induction. While I did not plan to do FI, I thought it would be good for more flow on my daily driver. I bought it when I first added a catless header to my 2.0L. I then thought it was a bit too quiet and got a Roadster Sport II. That RSII gave some decent sound. I then swapped to a 2.5L and added a Goodwin midpipe. All those mods with the Roadster Sport II muffler gave me some throaty sounds but too much drone at certain lower RPMs. Luckily I kept it and I am now running this Flyin Miata Supercharged muffler again because it sounds much better. No drone but has a good tone when getting in it. It is a few pounds heavier than the stock MX-5 muffler, and quite a bit heavier than the RSII. The exhaust tips are pretty beefy and I like the more angled sides versus the rounded soft shaped tips of the RSII. It is larger and fills the muffler bay in the rear of the car thus preventing parachuting you get from the tiny mufflers that are put into that cavern. So obviously there are tradeoffs here. This muffler is sadly not sold anymore and I don't think it has for a few years now. I did find a place that shows its info though to prove it is not a madeup mystical unicorn:

My situation has been very similar to you! I ran the stock muffler and found it very lacking, so I switched to a GWR Super-Q. While I enjoyed that one, it left me wanting more so I decided to pick up a used OEM Mazdaspeed muffler and I have to say I think I found the perfect one. The Mazdaspeed is very similar to the points you made about the FM and I find it funny how it's also quiet on cold starts as well.

I’m in the Los Angeles area and I’m up the local mountain roads every dry Saturday morning in my modified NC, maybe I’ll see you one day? An aftermarket axel back was always a curiosity to me because it added nothing to performance for the prices the online places were asking until I stumbled upon an eBay special last week for $160 and $70 for shipping. This polished stainless steel axel back is made by OBX, the reviews are ok. I just installed it yesterday and I’m not sure if I’ll keep it. It’s louder and deeper as most of these units are but that drone is not pleasant. I basically drive from my house to the mountains on saturdays and the rest of week it’s covered so as a toyish item it’s ok. Let me know if you want to part with your other axel backs. Thanks.
