I’m normally all in for the man maths, but… this really is a stretch. The used Taycan could lose 100% of its value from £50k and still be cheaper over 3 yrs and 30,000 miles than a Ghost at £80k - coming from someone who’s run F01 and G12 7 series for >100k miles. @@wfifa199 I reckon so… don’t you think? 30,000 miles at 18mpg is about £11k just in fuel @150p a litre, I would guess at about £30k depreciation for 3 years and 30,000 miles (starting from £80k, sounds reasonable), and surely £10k for 3 years maintenance on a roller isn’t much of a stretch? I suppose if you used public charging prices for the Taycan maybe it’d be a bit closer? Tell me if you think I’m wrong, too..
My Taycan cost me nothing to run. Last 10k miles barely spent 500 quid of electricity, 700 insurance Full comprehensive and no road tax. Still 1 year of Porsche warranty left. Couldn’t afford to run any other car with 700hp.
@somewhat-similar in the scenario of a Rolls doing that kind of mileage, then I see where you are coming from. But they are two very different cars that would be used differently (which shines a light on the comparison made by the content maker). A Taycan would get used and probably would do 10k miles a year. I can't see Roller doing that kind of mileage each year, unless you let your Chauffeur use it on his/her weeks off and he/she used it for trips to Scotland.

Superb, James. Yesterday, I was thinking so much about the Ghost, watched every single video on YT about it, including yours over the Phantom and Wraith (both that I love, but wouldn’t make sense for me)… thought “he very well could make a video about de Ghost”, 1 day later: 💥 Then I ask God: is this a sign? I believe it is… For refreshments: I don’t really love the facelift of this generation, and even though I loved the updates on the new Ghost, I didn’t really enjoyed the looks. So this would be exactly my choice, you’ve gotten even the colour combination right 😂
I've always loved Rolls-Royce. I was especially happy when they brought back the Ghost name. I rent one every chance I get. I will own one someday, but I have too many cars.
Great video. As I’m lucky enough to drive both the Phantom and Ghost on a regular basis, for me, the Ghost is my favourite. At a not-tall 5’6” I find the Ghost easier to drive and is more of a driver’s car. I love the thing.
Great video and enjoyable review. I once test drove an elderly RR from a slightly dodgy dealership in Croydon. I was absolutely smitten, but I was saving up for my first flat and the parts costs frightened me so I didn’t go for it. I reckon you should go for it if you can get in (and out if necessary) if it speaks to you that way! ❤
I used to be on the motor show circuit and I remember the Phantom appearing at Frankfurt 2003 - the show two years earlier had been horrid as it coincided with that dreadful day in the US but this one was great - a real buzz - but very tiring - I was shattered and just wanted ten - I slipped in the back of the phantom and closed the door - it was incredible - you suddenly went to a place of calm and just such amazing understated opulence - it was such a break from the hubbub of humanity - so yes if you can afford one then do it - the world is different and every time I went in one after that first time was joy. The ones I have tried all had that special thing - soul!
I have been keeping my eye on these for a while here in California. There are some very nice, low mile, examples itching to get into my garage. One of the best sedans of all time.
As a freelance photographer, occasionally doing (very) late night assignments and needing to drive home in the company of only moonlight and the occasional other driver for an hour or two... this would be quite delightful to sink into, engage back massage and drive off to beat first light and slip into the next soft cozy spot for a well earnt shut eye. If only the size and weight was a bit more practical. But heft has always been connected to comfort. Oh and the price and taxes also down about 90% please.
My sister has the very same car. She’s owned it from when it was five years old from one owner previous she does about 5 miles a week in it and she absolutely adore it. She paid for it out of her own money. She worked bloody hard to buy it and it’s a magnificent car.
This is the kind of useful consumer advice we all need to here 😂 this channel should be considered a public service and funded through the license fee!
These are timeless and a dream car for me. I currently have an absolute mint X351 5.0 which I would like never to sell, but as I am still young with my career ahead of me, I'd love to make one of these (preferably a Wraith) happen and add it to my stable. I am one to keep my cars and not worry about values or whatnot after I add it to the collection. It's a family member at that point, and what an ultimate machine a V12 Roller would be. The world will never see cars like this again, get them and enjoy them while you can.
I think it's a cool idea to get one. Imagine making a Ghost as a daily car or going for a trip to southern Europe in of these, that's a class and a great way to make some truly memorable moments :)
Somehow I like this more than a Phantom - it just clicks more as an overall form somehow, I'm astonished it's as big as you say in practice (the shape and overall design make it look visually not as massive). I really admire what they did with this indeed, looks like the Rolls Royce you drive.
Never thought I could be interested in a video about a Rolls Royce, but now you have even got me checking the prices in the classifieds... Having said that, they seem to be a lot more expensive over here in Germany. Thx for "something completely different"!
Easy decision James get yourself the Royce as you say permanent class they never date. Imagine flicking your curtains back and looking at that on your drive. Plus the excitement of deciding the model , colour trim that is very special. You only live once James make an executive decision go for it, sell your other baubles and go for permanent class. Champagne instead of prosecco, have I sold it to you? Great review by the way May need to watch a few times! More Royce cars please.
For me this is a permanent car. Even starting at 10 years old, it's good for another 20 year minimum ownership. It's the right size for all around use. Economical if you keep it long-term. That was always the Rolls-Royce approach. One car for life. It's actually a green approach as well. Buy cheap, buy twice.
I'd love to drive one, not so sure I'd want to own one as it would be no use as a family car (three kids...) and despite that engine it's not a sports car. So if I had £60k... I'd just keep saving till I could buy a McLaren 570GT. That's only another £20k... The kids would go in a mid-size SUV and that would be that. Oh yeah, you should totally buy it. It suits you. I genuinely think that.
BMW X7, Mercedes GLE Class, Audi Q8, Range Rovers. All tasteless SUV's that cost significantly more than a RR, worse quality, bland to look at and about to significantly depreciate, yet people still buy them over one of these. There's really no justification to drive something so boring, yet the UK public do.
they dont cost more than a RR lol. What kind of dump comparison is that? And of course people would chose a new, warrantied car over an old, utterly expensive to maintain one. Like, its common sense 101. And its not even a real scenario youre proposing. How many used RR in good condition do you think there are? DO you have the slightest idea how many high end SUVs are sold each day?
@@AI-qd4vb Sounds like you don't really know the market. A well maintained Royce is as good a new mid range car any day, mechanically. So I don't see that it's common 'sense' for a lower brand just because it's a bit newer. Assuming that we rightfully class Royce as the best you can get. These can be bought for under £60k, much cheaper than any of the new German SUVs, especially without options. There aren't many Royces on sale for the simple reason, they deliberately don't built many to retain exclusivity, while the peasants consider the German options. I did the same thing myself: wanted cheap luxury that is much cheaper than new: I bought a limousine that was once a mayoral car and was the only one of it's type on the road. You can look for it, or just be lucky. Happily used it as a daily driver, even in town.
@@samwhite8093 if you wish to see it so - but any fool can talk nonsense, and we will understand most of it; but professionalism is better served by avoiding tautology and pleonasm.
With the onset of technical obsolescence with EVs being a thing for a while (being outdated quicker than mechanical excellence) if it was my money, 70k on a stunning Rolls is where the smart money should be going. And in regards to the Porsche Taycan, even dealers aren't wanting used ones back as a trade in. So that's saying a lot to the market too, a Rolls Royce will have a market way after all the tech stuff is in landfill. Great video Jay, you should treat yourself to a Ghost.
here im now looking rolls royces and realicing that in finland there is one 2013 wraith whit askin price of 289000€ and one 2017 ghost whit 349000€ asking price. so i guess finnish car taxes have massive affect on the price if they can ask that kind of money from used rolls royces.
I usually like the cars that you do , but this one - I do not need or want . I do agree it is probably a better buy than a lot of cars in this price range . Many of the things I dislike about this car are features found on a Ford Focus ! I would prefer a manual handbrake , headlights that do not turn with the steering and dip (eventually ) when you meet another vehicle, usually after they flash you . Manufacturers would rather fit unnecessary crap that is very expensive to fix , on their vehicles . I would rather they spent more on known reliability issues . Should you get one ? 1, You would need to plan your journey . 2, Parking may be a problem . 3, Maintenance cost high . 4, Would it continue to depreciate ? Bottom line ..... If you are unsure about buying it , leave it . There will be plenty more !!
I dunno, my uncle had a 50's rolls (can't recall what model... Silver Spirit or something maybe?) - and he was a driving enthusiast - but for some reason they never struck me as the kind of car a driving enthusiast would buy - and the newer ones even more so. TBF he also had several other, more sporty cars, so perhaps they make more sense when you are in that kind of position.
Good question. I just sold my 98 Continental R. It was a lovely thing buy boy did it have a habit of sucking my wallet flat. That said my money is on the Ghost. It's a beautiful thing despite not being totally hand crafted like the older cars. In a way it's kind of timeless unlike the Porsche which I think will have a short shelf life.
Do it...they'd definitely make it into my dream garage alongside a Testarossa and an 812 GTS for my more spirited drives! The Ghost is in that happy position just below the Phantom but still a bit more special and classy than a Bentley or a Maybach. BMW have absolutely nailed what a Rolls Royce should mean...Luxury yes, but serenity and comfort at the same time.
If I was in the market for a car like this, I would buy the v12 7 series instead. Less ostentatious, cheaper to service/ fix, quicker, just as much tech and I would feel just at home in the driver's seat as the back seat 👍
Love the V12 7 series, but against the Rolls, I would choose the Rolls. The V12 in either is going to be high maintenance and the rest of the tech isn't easy either.
If you are going to do a long distance in a Porsche Taycan you should sign up for something like the Ionity Passport Tariff (currently 43p/kWh) and see you back here 20,000 miles later. Assuming a pessimistic 3mi/kWh and 50% charging is at Ionity - which is a lot more than most EV owners would do - it would be less than £1700 to do 20k vs a generous £7800(?) in petrol for the Roller (I would guess that would be closer to £10k). A used Rolls Royce is utterly lovely but they have always been a money pit. A used Taycan will be monster fun but won't cost and arm and a leg to run.
@@FFVoyager I’d take running costs over depreciation any day and I’d bet the Rolls is cheaper over a period of 3 years at that price point. EV’s are over before they start. When you start fining companies for selling petrol cars, that used market will have stabilised depreciation
@@bobbydwheelhouse I was addressing Jays moronic comment about running costs around 16:10. Live in fantasy land if you want but the lovely Rolls will empty your wallet faster than you can imagine, A Taycan, also bought used, won't. I don't think it's a great comparison though as Porsche have pushed out thousands of them to buyers who don't want them but can't get the Porsche they want if they don't stump up for one. Given many have lots of money they don't particularly care that much about losing out when they sell them either - hence the glut of the things and the drop in residuals. Thanks for this, great demo and excellent report as always. Would not have a Porsche for free, and as for an electric car, still no thanks. But these Rolls-Royces are fabulous and some great deals around at the moment. There is a downside and that is the running cost's IF something goes wrong! All OK whilst going well but there are issues that can send cost's spiralling and THAT can put the dampers on everything. Do the homework, choose a specialist and keep your fingers crossed, you won't be disappointed.
You make a good case for the Ghost, but I think I would miss driving a sportier car. Though, when in such a comfortable cruiser, I may just want to float. Maybe you gave a too easy of a comparator. Switch the Tycan for an FF (four seats; V12), I'll take the Ferrari. A DB11? Closer. Maybe the Ghost.
Tbf, it could be argued that besting a Tycann may not be so difficult if you can live without the styling. I'd have thought a 2000's Polo, Linen suit, and a JLC Reverso may make more sense.
The first time I drove a Rolls Royce Silver Seraph, which is no where near as powerful as the Ghost, right after taking the car I floored in a straight line and I was really gladly surprised by the amount of power and facility to pick up speed of such a huge car.cQuite simply: it delivered power, and so it felt. With extreme softness and delicacy, but power. There was power everywhere, anytime. For reference, it was the very same car used in the official photo shooting in Paris, and this I tell was also in Paris. Floored it in front of the American Embassy, in no time I was at the British Embassy and reaching the corner to drive in front of the Elysée, where a very polite Gendarme stopped the incoming traffic to let me go through.
Geoff, it would be interesting to analyse the split of EV vs non-EV cars sold by Ford, Stellantis etc given the government mandate that sales must have a minimum of 22% EV cars per manufacturer. If not achieved manufacturers need to pay a £15,000 penalty per non-EV car sold, based on that 22% EV/ 78% fuel split.
A few years ago while working via an agency and doing driving jobs, I would get an occasional job driving the agency boss in his Phantom, all over the country. Great times… One day a crappy old truck, the next, a new Phantom…😏💥 Fantastic. Get the Royce, James!😉🧐
My recollection was that VW dropped the ball, not BMW: VW didn't appreciate that the rights to the Rolls Royce name etc was not owned by Rolls Royce, but by Vickers, IIRC - in buying RR, VW thought they were getting the rights to badge cars as both RR & Bentley, but they weren't. BMW did the separate deal with Vickers, & built the factory fresh, rather than having to spend a fortune upgrading the Crewe plant. Great review, great car.
Definitely, yes. Buy one. A relative bargain in the UK. After watching I jumped on the web. Cheapest Ghost in Australia is a 2010 model with 140,000kms on it. Asking £100,000.

And if the seals leak? straight onto the ground to soak into it.
And a V12 engine takes how much oil……..

Saw the car being well and truly ‘hussled’ through that left hander and thought “Cripes! He’s committed through there 😅” and then you broke out chuckling / laughing!!! Brilliant!!
Seems a bloody lovely car…. Make a nice addition to the fleet for the special occasions and nice days out 😎
We bought our Ghost after owning a Silver Spur II LWB and I absolutely love it.
I had a Turbo RL ages ago when I started out. Lovely old thing but it made the Space Shuttle look cheap to run. 😂
Great video once again Jay🎉
Quality and class, some just don't get it 👌
I’m normally all in for the man maths, but… this really is a stretch. The used Taycan could lose 100% of its value from £50k and still be cheaper over 3 yrs and 30,000 miles than a Ghost at £80k - coming from someone who’s run F01 and G12 7 series for >100k miles. I’d love the Ghost, but that’s not a head choice that’s a heart choice.
Total cost of ownership over 3 years for the Rolls would be £50k+?
@@wfifa199easily.
If you can’t afford to maintain a new Rolls, you can’t afford to deal with a used Rolls.

great work James. your reviews are now like a well oiled machine. You excell at them!! congrats.
Superb, James. Yesterday, I was thinking so much about the Ghost, watched every single video on YT about it, including yours over the Phantom and Wraith (both that I love, but wouldn’t make sense for me)… thought “he very well could make a video about de Ghost”, 1 day later: 💥
Then I ask God: is this a sign? I believe it is…
For refreshments: I don’t really love the facelift of this generation, and even though I loved the updates on the new Ghost, I didn’t really enjoyed the looks. So this would be exactly my choice, you’ve gotten even the colour combination right 😂

I doubt anyone would have been laughing had a car been coming the opposite way though.
The driver in that B-roll footage was absolutely shifting! “Adequate power” indeed.
I'd applaud you getting one. I would happily sell the f12 and 430, however I think you should hang on to the 550.
Cheers for another lovely review.
Yessss Jayemm! Been waiting quite a while for a Ghost to appear on here… Take my money 😍👌
Mulsanne not a terrible plan B either surely?
I have a 2013....love it! A definite 'keeper' for me!
If you would end up buying one, I think it could make a good content a la running costs, living with it etc.
Great review mate, just great...I was already sold on the idea of RR Ghost and you just added some pizzazz to it...
Yep buy one, then we can watch your and not spend a penny. Great review as always, top job. John

I think you forgot the part where you're in a Rolls Royce
Treat yourself James. Absolutely wonderful statement motorcar.
Rolce Royce is in a league of its own,Porsches and Teslas don't even come close.
Thx for "something completely different"!
as usual nice vid. just look at residuals of the merc EQS new vs used. its quite shocking the difference in price.
My SEAT also has soft closer powered (skiding) doors. Splendid!
This car suits you, James. Are you going to buy one?? Go on, you know you want to!
How you create so much content I do not know, keep them coming JayEmm - well done!
This geezer always makes the kind of crazy cross shopping suggestions I come up with in my head but never dare to say out loud 😂
Very tempting at that price but I will not see a similar price (adjusted for currency) here in Oz.

Smarter is not always more fun. And the looks of a Rolls... It s a matter of taste I guess
If I'll have enormous amounts of money one day, I do want to get an experience of Rolls Royce, no matter the production model.
Sadly, that's much the same on the European mainland. Add in the occasional pickup truck and you've got bingo.
they dont cost more than a RR lol.
What a stupid post.

I think you should buy one 👌😮💨
Hush, poor. The winners are talking.
That’s what I did ,well an immaculate 530hp 750i xdrive wunderbar (raises up to get in and lowers to drive) 🤗
Hey Jay, great review like always but instead of calling it a short wheelbase it’s the standard wheelbase and they offer anextended wheelbase. 👍🏽
I'd rather compare a leggy Ghost with a Mercedes EQS - waft around in luxury after spending £60k and see which costs the least over 20,000 miles......(it'll be the Rolls wallet crusher)
@@FFVoyager I think it’s 85k vs 85k, you’d be surprised how a bought right Rolls with strong main / inde history can run, and to a reasonable price point too. I’ve driven most Porsche products, I enjoy some not all. 992 Turbo S is spectacular. But an EV Porsche new vs this can’t get anywhere near it .
@@bobbydwheelhouse I'm not the one comparing them! They are not even slightly related - but Jay is utterly wrong about the running costs. The Rolls would be crippling in comparison.

Go for it Jay! This is an absolute dream car and you only live once.
YEAH!
Love the roll rocye I had a roll rocye silver spirit I now have Bentley GTG

I think you need to get one James. No brainer at that money and you can always hire it out as others have said.
Yes you should.. you would be in good company.. (do the Dawn though)
A few years ago while working via an agency and doing driving jobs, I would get an occasional job driving the agency boss in his Phantom, all over the country.
