This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "good baseball hitting techniques" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Penonnor Baseball Babaco - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my neighbour got excellent results with it.
Soft toss is better than back toss because when you do back toss it causes you to drop your hands and dip your back shoulder. It is not a good drill to do.
First year Head Coach for 8 year old player pitch, having problems with batting and I think the bucket drill and frisbe drill will help soo much. Thank you for the great video.
+Alfonso Solano Awesome! I'm glad it's a help! DON'T FORGET!!! - like, share, and comment on any video that I upload from 5/1/16 - 6/30/16 for your chance to win a YouGoPro Arm Sleeve!
Very applicable set of drills. Appreciate your efforts to assist in youth baseball development! These are core drills that apply to a 10 or 18 year old.
The Frisbee drill is hard at first. Once you get it you can really feel it working. In a game situation you learn to get all the way through the ball giving that little bit of power in there. Love these drills and keep up the good work.
Wonderful instructional video, Coach! I've been playing baseball since 1973 and coaching kids since my Freshman year at Kean University in 1983 and have seen several important drills for the first time. You also seem to have a great demeanor when it comes to working with young people. Don't know why, but too many coaches think yelling and "put downs" are the way to reach our youth. Also, think it stinks that so many people choose to leave such negative, and silly comments. Be positive fellow coaches when it comes to other coaches; especially a great one like this guy. Thanks all, Erich L. Ruehs, Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
Getting back into Little League coaching with my grand-son. Coached my son, then umpired for 12 years. These drills are great, I see three I can incorporate on the level I'll be coaching, thanks John, I'll be sure to check out the others.
That's good stuff man. I coach 10U and we have some incredible hitters on our team, but we have one kid who can crush it in the cage, he can hit well at practice, but he gets in a game and he loses it. We are fifteen games into the season and he has one hit. We've tried everything, I'm hoping some of these drills will work. Thanks
ive coached kids like that before.the game is moving too fast and they are overthinking it swinging at bad pitches and watching good ones go by.out of desperation i told this kid to swing at the first 3 pitches even if they bounced in the dirt hit it on the hop.it worked for him and some of the other kids i have coached.baseball is such a mental game.
These are great drills that work well with young players. I have used variations of them for years based on the player type and skill level. I take issue with the effectiveness of back toss drills for younger players though. In my experience with young hitters, any drill that encourages head movement to track a ball creates more problems than benefits to a young player’s swing. Of course, there are young players and young athletic players.
Finally a video that will help me with my sons swing. My 7 year old has an ok swing but these drills should help him for fall ball training. Any tips on how to teach my kid how to stop dropping the bat at the top of his swing? When he loads he tends to cock his wrists and it makes the bat parallel to the ground at the top of his swing causing alot of late hits to first base.
You will be happy to know that I used this video as an educational tool for my grandson who loves baseball. Your tips definitely helped him improve his game. Thank you John.
Awesome channel. Love your hitting mechanics drills and these six and all your hitting drills. I use these with my two sons. I would like to see some throwing mechanics drills and some throwing drills for youth. My 12 year old drops his arm and pushes the ball and isn't very accurate. He throws kinda hard but I'm sure if I can get him doing it right he would through a lot harder and more accurate, but I'm having a hard time. Thanks for sharing your drills and comments you seem like a great coach/instructor.
+YouGoPro Thanks for the quick response. He's not a pitcher, I've been trying to correct this for about 4-5 years now. I guess either I don't know what I'm doing or we are not working on it enough. Do you have anything for basic throwing I think I need to go way back, I've tried the wrist flips, knee drills, telling him over and over to keep his arm up. Also we are going to start doing some of the pro hitting drills you have and I was wondering if, since they use aluminum bats in games and regular BP, if it would confuse them with the feel at contact or anything if I use the one handed wooden bat for training?
The "Stop at Contact" Drill is demonstrated at 3:23; "Back Toss" is demonstrated at 4:43...two drills I've tried to integrate with my young hitters. I particularly like "Stop at Contact" because you can demonstrate "Setting an Axis" and finishing with a tilted axis - also demonstrates that the bat is not swung flat through the zone. Good look at having a firm front side and bent back knee at contact.
Right now, I'm in last place with a team full of 10 and 11 year olds who have long swings that are just too slow to hit effectively at this level. Going to try both fence drills tomorrow in practice. We need to get rolling. We pitch and field pretty well but are dead last by a longshot in runs scored this year. Will let you know how it goes.
+DJMNM310 Cool thanks. DON'T FORGET!!! - like, share, and comment on any video that I upload from 5/1/16 - 6/30/16 for your chance to win a YouGoPro Arm Sleeve!
One of my sons is having a lot of trouble. He is also the one (four total) who is the best power hitter in the family, but despite everything I try he is a lunger and a caster (reaches at breaking balls). Led the team in RBI's hit for average and power, and went o-4 with 2 k's the last game of the season Tuesday night. He was devistated. I try everything including video of his swings. He knows what he's doing wrong, does everything right in the cage, but a pitcher with a good breaking ball just nutrilizes him. About ready to try one of those devices that keep you from reaching and lunging. John, maybe you can tell him to zone up in breaking ball counts and quit reaching/lunging. Right field is a fine destination for a well driven ball. These kids want to pull everything!!!! ugggghhh
+Jay Toomuchhustle I'm having success with one of my younger players right now where I've got him not swinging at curveballs until 2 strikes if it's close. We work on hitting them correctly in practice by staying back because he collapses out front too. But the last few weeks he hasn't swung at one in the games and has been very successful. Unfortunately, this won't work at the higher levels of baseball but at least buys us some time to work on zoning up in breaking ball counts and being a better slow ball hitter.
need batting drills for 6-8 yr olds playing machine pitch. I have few 7 yr olds how have never swung a bat and are missing every pitch of aboit 30 balls.
Genesis you are correct you want to put your weight on your back leg so you don’t lean into the pitch and you also put more power into your swing without having to move your body as much.
but it's not good for them to go to a little bat then go back to their bat dont you want to have a bat that is Heavy then go back to your bat that is lighter ? but I love your video I coach boy from ages 6-8 But I just started a year ago now thanks give us more lol
Am very new to baseball and am 12 years old is that an very bad age to start? btw am not that new am an SS and barely know how to field and sometimes i think the ball is gonna hit me and crush my arm should i be worried*
I’m a swing analyst, my only real knock is the frisbee drill. For many it reinforces an overly rotated torso at impact. I’d make guys go feet in concrete doing it.
The last drill is ineffective. Bad manners for wanting to go for high pitches. I was taught this is a kid and it taught to swing at pitches I didn't need to. Stay hip level, if you like the frisbee training then you want it to start curving to the right a little (land in right field) it's a good method if you stay swinging at the hip area
why dont batters check their swing on every pitch they dont swing at? this way they more easily know how to repeat the same swing or a little up or down when that pitch comes in the same area? we are allowed to check swing... so use it, every time you take a pitch.
Any coach that has a short kid, or a fat kid, or a nerdy kid join the team ... and he clearly doesn't know how to hit a ball... because basically he had no father to teach him... and you feel he has little value so YOU don't teach him ... then you're the purest piece of shit. I was one of those kids. I was humiliated off the filed. I wanted to continue until I learned how to hit, but it hurt my mother to see the other guys talk to badly about me. So I had to learn everything the hard way. There's been ups and downs. The military basically prepared me ... showed me how to over-come. I still can't hit a baseball, but I've passed by so many men, far more physically gifted than I... as they asked for pennies on the street. I spent years lifting those "winners" out of poverty, alcoholism, drug addiction, mental and sexual confusions and problems. I've traveled far wider and studied harder than most. No kid on my Pony Little League team has accomplished in life what I have. If only that coach had shown me some compassion... he'd have taught those knuckle-heads how to have it... for others... and themselves. So ... "coach"... lead out... all those kids... and in doing so, you'll do far more than your ego or your limited scope of life could imagine. Those kids... the "losers" ... when they come back and visit you years later, may be your greatest solace and victory... because "coach" .... in life... everyone falls... everyone goes through "Dark Nights of the Soul" ... and it may well be that when you're sinking, that kid you rejected will pass YOU by... holding the option to either throw you a life preserver ... or ignore YOU like you did him. To the coaches ... and players who chose to look out for ALL their comrades ... well done. To the thousands of others? Karma is a bytch. No one... no one... escapes Karma.
Great advice! Your drills really help. My 6-year-old son improved considerably and is hitting home runs now. Even scouts have begun looking at him play. Here is his highlight reel: ruclips.net/video/GwO5oeiGwQo/видео.html
to be honest I think a lot of this guys drills (while maybe effective) are a little to much. Just to much over doing it. Always remember all this stuff wasn't around for Ruth, Williams, Dimaggio etc. if you want to be a great hitter it's all about dedication. Make sure you are getting your tee reps, soft toss reps, cage time and u will be fine. however i am a big fan of the tiny balls he showed. That will maximize hand/eye coordination.
I agree, but the problem with alot of these mainstream hitting tips require another person, but none of my friends play baseball, and my dad and brothers aren't really into going to the cages and hitting/soft toss, so some of these drills are better for people in a similar situation as me.
Yes you're right it wasn't around when Ruth played but baseball has developed a lot since then and pitchers are throwing faster and different pitched these things are good for you
+Will Carroll you can do a lot of these things by your self like I do the drill where you hit into a Mat and just record my self on my phone then look over it if you have questions show it to your coach and see what he says then you can hit off tees or frisbee drill you just have to get creative
Fred what in the world does all your problems of your PAST have to do with this video? If you applied some of the techniques on this video then I'm sure you could begin to hit a baseball....with your approach to the video sounds like your more concerned with the past than what is before you right now....and that is how to hit a baseball...gain some focus here.
@@JD-wk8gs, i mean, its kinda clear that ive already watched the video, i was just making a joke because there are 2 numbers, and the 4 stands out more than the 6

I played in the minors for the Washington Nationals. Just curious, is that complex at Port St Lucie, NYM spring training?
Yup.
Soft toss is better than back toss because when you do back toss it causes you to drop your hands and dip your back shoulder. It is not a good drill to do.
