I agree the manual said that when the treble is up that much, the mid and bass doesn’t have much affect, lower the treble and they make way more difference, I learned the hard way 🙀
I just purchased this amp and I have to say this demo is pretty spot on, this is what this amp sounds like. Also note that this thing second name is versatility, you can get any type of tone you wish out of this little monster.
i dig diezels but they're basically the same price of mesas. Engl it's either hit or miss with me (some of them are fizzy as hell). The EU brand i REALLY like it's blackstar. To me they do fantastic amps for a very affordable prices. Victory too. They don't have "bedroom" options tho.
Thanks for reviewing it by playing smth heavy, not blues or classic rock or some lame tunes like everyone else does. Sorry for my narrow-mindness Thank you.
With the treble knob cranked the mid and bass can't effect the tone much (the way the Mark's tone stack works) - would be a lot more noticeable with the treble near noon.
It depends what mode you're in. The Mark II and IV mode behaves just like on the older models. The EQ are pre-shaping knobs before the gain. It acts like a pre-boost really that's why it doesn't affect the tone that much, and also why they later on added the graphic EQ in the amp. The Extreme mode behaves more like a regular amplifier though.
I've watched A LOT of demo's of this amp and the consensus as I understand it is that this is without a doubt a gigging amp; however, it holds it's tonal qualities quite well at lower volumes...In other words, you wont have to crank it to get a good tones in say a bedroom setting, but it is definitely geared more towards being used for gigs...Either way though, it's a loud amp...You can always run it directly into an interface to check out some of the higher volume tones without blowing out your windows though...
I tested one few days ago. Ran it thru an EVH 2x12 closed back cab. I couldn't find a tone I liked. I was disappointed with the heavy tones. I prefer my Mesa Stiletto Ace with its el34 tone. This reminded me of other 6L6 Mesas I've tried.
Yes the mark series are not conventional in terms of eq. They are an amp you need patience to dial in and the controls have direct effect on the tone even just a slight change can have a huge difference in tone. I really liked the mk3 I used to play
Can anybody tell what he is playing at 2:42? I realize it’s probably something he made up but I want to play stuff similar to what he was playing there
Nice playthrough ola. If I didn't have my mark V full size I'd consider one of these. Hey, if you can get your hands on a Rivera KR7 could you do a play through on that? I was contemplating one. Keep up the awesome vids man!
I have this amp and finally can play some Killing Joke more accurately sound wise(at low volume).Geordie Walker has a special tone.Thx for posting.Have a good life.
Well, midrange is good, but too much midrange takes the "grain" out of the distortion, making it smoother, which is fine for leads, but isn't for rhythm tones, because it loses, at least in my opinion, a lot of character and a lot of intensity. Plus, the 2nd and 4th sliders also are midrange, just at a higher/lower pitch of midrange.
Hi there good to have come upon you, I heard your name on ultimateguitar.com in relation to Mesas... do you have info on the power transformers on the Mark V 25, are the USA 110 volt models usable with 220 volts?
Mesa uses a different transformer all together for the UK models, which is one of the many reasons why it is so much more expensive out there...Lee and Rob Chapman explain this pretty well in their demo of this amp...Check it out!
The Treble, Bass, and Mid knobs are pre-gain eq, which is different than 95% of amps out there. If you have the treble knob cranked, you're inputting a ton of clean input gain similar to a tubescreamer, which negates almost entirely the mid and bass knob when you do this. The positive is that you get this SUPER tight high-gain tone, and then you can add the bass back with the EQ. Ola goes into detail on this in one of his Mark IIc+ videos.
Vince LuPone - thanks for the reply. Just getting into this Mesa line and finding out there’s a bit of a learning curve, lol. Helps explain why some reviews of this head sound horrible. I’m finding out good stuff though, like what you mentioned here and that as the gain goes up the bass has to be drastically cut. I’d like to get one but I don’t know if I deserve it... don’t get paid to play, just play for fun :)
can anyone please help me with the pros and con between this and the mini rectifier, same range price and i woul like to hear your opinions about this two great amps thanks!!
Yup, I've owned it for 4 years. Contrary to common belief, I've found that cranking the master volume and lowering each channel volume produces fully saturated distortion at house volume too. Leaning on keeping it.
On almost all Mesas, the higher you turn up the treble, the less effective the mid an bass knobs become. All of the knob tone controls are interactive.
Larry Harrold On mesas like the Mark series this is true but not models that have a Marshall style cathode follower driven tonestack ie the Dual Rectifier. I've owned 2 of the older Mark III's and the studio preamp but I was really amazed to see the here the mid control was totally dead lol
Skippy McStringStrum That statement is a lil inaccurate but I understand what you mean. The passive tone stack on a Mark amp is after the first gain stage a la Fender and once the treble control is all the way up the other controls have less effect.
Is there a more boring, cliche'd sound on earth than the metal buzz-saw "tone?" It completely cracks me up how soooooo many guitarists labor soooooo long and diligently to make the tiniest tweaks in a "tone" that essentially sounds like a 4x12 cab being dragged behind a truck on a gravel road. I know, I know - the over-driven pentatonic runs used to demo almost every other amp online (the ones that don't use the metal buzz-saw riffs) run a close second...
I'm 100 percent on board with the original poster. For a guy that plays more fusion and jazz, all the way to rock, these demos straight up suck. Apparently everybody interested in a Boogie from the mid 90s on want the nu metal sound. Great. Terrible sound to begin with.
I agree the manual said that when the treble is up that much, the mid and bass doesn’t have much affect, lower the treble and they make way more difference, I learned the hard way 🙀
Pretty cool how he plays with one hand lol
Nope, he is simply using his third hand to turn the knobs.
Rames
Really? No shit!
It's called "reamping". He's talked about it before
lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
William Shapiro I was just about to say it's amazing how he plays and fiddles with the knobs at the same time, then I saw your comment.
I just purchased this amp and I have to say this demo is pretty spot on, this is what this amp sounds like. Also note that this thing second name is versatility, you can get any type of tone you wish out of this little monster.
I just wish mesa products wouldn't be so damn overpriced over here in europe.
If it makes you feel any better, Marshall stuff on this side of the pond is pretty darned pricey as well!
It doesnt. Im not a big marshall fan haha.
you guys get engl and diezel too
i dig diezels but they're basically the same price of mesas. Engl it's either hit or miss with me (some of them are fizzy as hell). The EU brand i REALLY like it's blackstar. To me they do fantastic amps for a very affordable prices.
Victory too. They don't have "bedroom" options tho.
Diezel is crazy expensive here in the U.S. I was looking at one but saw its like double the price of Mesa here.
That’s a demo. More rocky, less talky.
Opeth...the clean part...wondered what sounded so divine.
2:12 PERFECT Tone for like 2 seconds
I just bought this amp. Its amazing, the end of my journey...
I also have the Trem o Verb Dual Rectifier combo, 100watt.
Mesa/Boogie is the best!
End of journey? You trying to convince yourself? Lol
Still the end? 😉
It's truly an amazing amp. My 5150 is collecting dust a bit since then...
I’ll take it off your hands the 5150 rocks
you like this more?
Thanks for reviewing it by playing smth heavy, not blues or classic rock or some lame tunes like everyone else does. Sorry for my narrow-mindness Thank you.
that thing sounds amazing. if only it was like 500 bucks I would get it
I own this head and run it through the 2x12 Recto cabinet. Sounds YUGE and freaking thicc and tight.
You just described a Young woman from New Jersey. Well, until you got to the tight part.
My EQ on my Mesa Boogie Studio Pre was around there at one point 1:30...moving the whole V up can sound decent.
This is a real thing?!! What! I've been asking for this forever!
the amp can D 'gent, the clean sounds from the amp are pristine
I just bought this amp. It's AMAZING
+Matt Z Same here.. I'm still in shock! love the tones!
After 2 years how do you find it? I'm considering buying one soon
Reason for getting V:25 instead of V:35?
@@lucwilson1 Size mostly
is it loud enough to play in a concrete basement with a loud drummer and other very loud guitar players ? thanks !
Ola can make everything sound good
Master of the guitar tones!
Great amp for bedroom playing and live , glad I bought it many years ago, price has doubled
Thanks for the video, now what about a Mark V vs Mark V 25 comparison?
I need to understand if they are similar
So good sounding. Love this amp
My only question is how do you play so well with only one hand, Ola
Either the youtube audio it's affecting this way too much or the knobs for EQ hardly do anything, good thing it has the graph one too.
Was pretty dramatic change when I listened.
I agree that the eq knobs seemed less drastic than the other eq.
With the treble knob cranked the mid and bass can't effect the tone much (the way the Mark's tone stack works) - would be a lot more noticeable with the treble near noon.
Dipendra Bagchee Boom! Right on the money man. It was the same for the Mark series amps I've owned.
It depends what mode you're in. The Mark II and IV mode behaves just like on the older models. The EQ are pre-shaping knobs before the gain. It acts like a pre-boost really that's why it doesn't affect the tone that much, and also why they later on added the graphic EQ in the amp. most metal guitarrr chanel...Olaa
Mesa Boogie is probably the only amp that needs NO pedals in front whatsoever for Heavy chug...My Triaxis Kicks ass. Simple.
Damn this thing sounds good
Only one question: can you achieve good tones at room volume levels?
I've watched A LOT of demo's of this amp and the consensus as I understand it is that this is without a doubt a gigging amp; however, it holds it's tonal qualities quite well at lower volumes...In other words, you wont have to crank it to get a good tones in say a bedroom setting, but it is definitely geared more towards being used for gigs...Either way though, it's a loud amp...You can always run it directly into an interface to check out some of the higher volume tones without blowing out your windows though...
This amp is incredible
Great demo! I was JUST thinking about this amp. I need a lighter rig for practice, I already use a Masa Rectoverb!
Nice jamming, the play through really suits the amp well. Cheers
Looks like the treble and gain are linked together on extreme setting. He dials back treble, and gain disappears, interesting.
Mid is linked to gain on crunch on channel one too I think.
Yes the mark series are not conventional in terms of eq. They are an amp you need patience to dial in and the controls have direct effect on the tone even just a slight change can have a huge difference in tone. I really liked the mk3 I used to play
Hey Ola. Can you revisit this amp with your current mic set up. I'm considering a new lunchbox amp and torn between this and the EVH LBX III
the eq thing makes wonders on this amp
Lots of good sounds in that one.
I use this video as a guide while I dial in tones on mine. Very nice!
Can anybody tell what he is playing at 2:42? I realize it’s probably something he made up but I want to play stuff similar to what he was playing there
wow lots of gain and tone love it
Because of the eq? I put a seymour duncan 805 in front of my 5152 and a rectifier and it sound good!
THE BEST TEST !!! VERY COOL OLA...
Notice how the mid control dial inmpact seems to diminish once the EQ is engaged when using the dirty channel?
Thank you!.
Can the head produce sound out of a cab as well as a signal from the cab clone ?
Ola, did you have a chance to compare it to Mark V 35?
I have that amp absolutely love it
What speaker os in that 1x12 cab?
Is the mesa 5-25watt loud enough to play 1 by 1 with classic drums ?
Nice playthrough ola. If I didn't have my mark V full size I'd consider one of these. Hey, if you can get your hands on a Rivera KR7 could you do a play through on that? I was contemplating one. Keep up the awesome vids man!
I know this is very old, but is this loud enough to play in a band situation, or should you go for at least 50 watts?
I have this amp and finally can play some Killing Joke more accurately sound wise(at low volume).Geordie Walker has a special tone.Thx for posting.Have a good life.
Great sounding amp!!!!
its brakes up a little earlier on the clean channel or is it something else cause that?
The cleans sounded like from an active pickups.
that riff at 1:20 is pretty cool. what is that? from something?
Sounds like bury your dead from The Haunted’s first album
Does turning the EQ sliders on disable the knobs?
No, the knobs are pre gain EQ, and the GEQ is Post Gain
great video
What's better for a Rammstein tone, this or the mini rectifier?
What is a cab clone and how would I use it?
Great video!
Nice video... But why everyone use the inverted V in EQ...? Don't you like mids?
Well, midrange is good, but too much midrange takes the "grain" out of the distortion, making it smoother, which is fine for leads, but isn't for rhythm tones, because it loses, at least in my opinion, a lot of character and a lot of intensity. Plus, the 2nd and 4th sliders also are midrange, just at a higher/lower pitch of midrange.
listen at about 1:10 when he does up the mids to see what I mean.
This way it's easier to mix a loud guitar with vocals etc?
Timur Iskhodzhanov Well, you need some mids, but too much midrange makes a very unpleasant metal sound, especially for the chugging rhythm.
Low mids = metal, rich mids = hardcore. The amount of distortion is pretty much the same
awesome....simply awesome
love this amp
These front eq knobs act so fendery
That's because, just like Marshall's, the orginal Mesa's were basically modified Fenders. The Mark series of amps builds upon that...
Instant Metallica!!!
Knobs are turning but the sounds not changing...? Does he know?

Does the mid Eq knob not do anything?
Probably not the best forum for this but I have a standing offer to trade a 2007 Triple Recto for a brand new Mark V mini. To trade or not to trade?
Off The Grid Rough choice. Is the recto yours? And do you really use all 150 of the triple rec's watts?
Yup, I've owned it for 4 years. Contrary to common belief, I've found that cranking the master volume and lowering each channel volume produces fully saturated distortion at house volume too. Leaning on keeping it.
Is it me or is the clean way clunkier than the Mini Rectifier?
Who know , ? Mark V 25 is there a built-in load ???
This or the Mini recto for low volume modern metal tones?
Mark V 25! it's got more usable gain at low volumes. Watch the mini Rectoverb vs the Mark V 25 video!
what chords he play? very ncie chords!
this amp is good for clean only.
No. It's an awesome all around amp.
Mesa v25 o peavey 6505 mini head?
Sounds like a LoG riff.
Only the 5 band EQ makes it sound different?
Timanator, if the treble knob is dailed fully open then the middle and bass knobs are not doing anything
The gain is outrageous though !
why you max out treble?
Awesome cab!! But afraid to know how much it costs xDD
Around 2200$.
Right in my wallet! But that amp worths it
About $1500 Canadian.....
now make this compact unit into a 100 watt model !
Troll bait? They have Full sized Mark V

cool
Ola I hate you! You make me want to buy more stuff :-) Killer demo
No needed OD in front of it ?
not with a mark five.
Fak. This amp would be great for my lofi junkie needs
What the hell, no clap, what's up, and a burp? What do I pay you for?
This was a Young Ola, before he allowed himself to really shine and give the world his angelic burps.
Lol!! Nice
- clean and crunch - .........skips to metal again
Never liked how flubby the M5 sounded. Those low end farts are horrible.
6505 and powerball own any muddy boogie
leave this mids alone...
Mid knob does nothing? Also umm crunch mode is on stop playing the fucking arpeggios! J-C
The graphic EQ does all the work. The 3-band is before the distortion.
On almost all Mesas, the higher you turn up the treble, the less effective the mid an bass knobs become. All of the knob tone controls are interactive.
