Thanks so much for watching!! I'll be doing a LIVE Auction Tutorial for Beginners on Whatnot Tuesday morning at 10:30am eastern time! I'll walk through my auction items and explain how things work I as I go! I think it will be a lot of fun! Sorry I originally scheduled it for Sunday which is Father's Day. I just don’t see how people without a following on other platforms can do very well without spending a LOT of time hyping themselves up and chatting in various other chats. Which feels like a time suck. all platforms are work, I suppose, but I have watched so many sales with maybe 8 people in the room and items going for so cheap.
You’re a natural and so glad it works for you! Just feeling like it’s a big uphill climb for those without followings (in terms of actually being successful with it).
Ha, I keep editing as I watch more-this is all super helpful!

There is definitely a time investment to get to know people, and I include myself in the group of people who need to invest. There are a handful of people with large followings bringing attention to the app but also tons of people who are making a name for themself on this app who have no significant social media presence elsewhere. I just think it's great to have options when it comes to reselling. Thanks so much for watching.

Live sales are great for sourcing for the reseller community; not everyone is willing to hang out in Whatnot auctions looking for the deals. I’m going to start posting my Whatnot purchases this weekend and track my sell through rate.
You did a great job; remember to pin, talk, then start the auction 😂

Started my first live auction on Whatnot and let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster of excitement, humor, and tech difficulties! Despite being a Whatnot newbie with zero followers, I dove in after loads of research. The setup process was a challenge - I'm no tech wizard. The fear of echoing sound haunted me, and I couldn't figure out which device to use along with the music part.
In a panic and feeling a little discouraged, (Don't Laugh)....I resorted to an ancient boom-box radio (last touched by my daughter 15 years ago!) for the Christmas music. Major shoutout to your video advice: log in on the phone first, then desktop. Cue the "aha" moment - turning down the desktop sound and using my iPhone for video and sound.
Confession: I'm not up-to-date with tech gadgets, so my old-school approach worked. Nervous as ever, I pulled off my first show, making 5 sales at modest prices - success! But, setting up was a beast, and subsequent shows flopped. Disheartening, right? Poshmark and Mercari were slow too, so I'm regrouping and trying a different time. Here's to more exciting auctions and fewer echoes! 🚀

For people with YT followings, sure, you will do well on Whatnot because a lot of the sales are just basically "donations" to the channel. These people would not have bought some of this stuff otherwise.
That is why so many YT reseller channels that are trying Whatnot are so enthused. A built in audience of fans willing to watch a live-version of your show, and "tipping" you throughout. It seems like it's just this magic selling machine, but it remains to be seen if a significant number of the people buying are really just random people that happen to be watching.
Nothing wrong with it being just fans, just that it painting Whatnot as something it really isnt.

I’ve had many great sales on whatnot with 0 social media! It can be done just find the right niche/audience. Heck I sold a bundle of 3 table cloths I pad $1 for for $46 and a random retro style jacket I pad .50c for $54 ❤️ hopefully you try it again :)

    • @LorisBostonFound

I fully acknowledge that my supporters played a huge role in my first show. It definitely helped me. I think though, that if someone enjoys this style of sales there is great potential for them. Outside of the 5-10 larger accounts in the reselling space that people are probably referencing there are hundreds of other accounts and many people I'm watching for the first time on the app. Some are doing really well and Ive been in rooms where people are struggling. It's a time investment but also a great new option for resellers. I'm curious to see what the future holds for this app.

Be careful with publicly announcing if you're disappointed with the sales price. The Whatnot community rules forbid "disparaging" the sales price. I just read the rules this morning and this topic is covered.

As whatnot seller that’s been doing it for two months with 0 following this was a great video best one I’ve seen yet. If you do not have a following I’d still try it and figure out your niche. I started selling clothing and found it to be oversaturated and not really for me so now I’m in the estate collectible category and gained a following right away! Start at the least you’d take! Also just know yourself best of luck for everyone. ❤️

Thank you Lori for all your feedback. Does the seller get to determine the starting bid price? If so, how do you determine the price? And if you're not on IG or YT, how do you gain an audience?

    • @LorisBostonFound
      @LorisBostonFound  2 года назад +5

The seller does determine to starting bid just before they make the auction go live. I'll be doing a tutorial auction on Sunday for anyone who would like a slower pace with a breakdown on each item. I think being consistent with your shows is a great way to build your following on the app. Good planning also goes a long way. If you are motivated to get going on this platform I absolutely think you can be successful without a following. You got this! ❤

I’m just listening to the beginning of your video but so far I totally agree with you. I’m brand new to Whatnot and I have zero social media following And I look at it this way you have to spend money to make money. I’ve been in the business world for 40 years and selling on various platforms, eBay for over 25 and full-time on Poshmark for three, also on Etsy and Mercari. So I know what I’m doing. I already have about 200 followers on Whatnot in just two weeks so I’m pretty proud of that. But anything I salon what not I expect to break even or lose a little money and that’s OK with me. My goal is to gain an audience and I feel like once I can get about 1000 followers and what not it’ll be a game changer for me. Your advice is right on the mark.

I definitely see Chinese live sales on TikTok quite a bit. Maybe it’s just me but I just don’t get the hype. I’d feel I was wasting my time watching a live auction like. Unless I’m watching an auctioneer with a fun voice pattern I can’t see myself ever wanting to shop this way.

I purchased the gap linen shorts! I loved your show! I’m watching shows and after this video, I think I’m going to apply. I have zero following on social media (for my reselling business) but I think it’s something I could be good at and build a following over time. When you talked about how this might be good for people who like the idea of RUclips videos but don’t want to edit or record, that spoke to me haha.

You and Jenna are my favorite on Whatnot, because I enjoy your personalities and professionalism. It's as much entertainment as shopping for me, and having grown up going to live auctions and absolutely loving and missing it, this fills that gap for me. I do have to tone it down, though. I've been trying to support so many new sellers while I'm waiting to be approved that's it's to the detriment of my own budget (even if I am shopping for personal use) 🤣
I think the people at whatnot probably had to beef up their bandwidth to support us after opening up the thrift and contemporary category. 😁👍

For the sweater that was cancelled (the bidder went too high) you could mention that people can put in a custom amount to bid up to instead of trying to snipe with the bid button - works particularly well for items you may have promoted / showed in preview etc. that you suspect will garner a higher amount

Excellent breakdown, Lori! Such an exciting time for resellers! I personally think tops/dresses are an easier sell in the WhatNot versus pants as pants are so size specific. It's easier to have a bidding war on a Large sweater versus size 8 pants, I think. But all of you clothing sellers are making me want to go out and source clothes now!

And with depop, I will say that that is very much a curated closet type reselling platform. Mostly geared towards younger audiences like the y2k, and the more vintage styles. I see a lot of resellers try to transition over there and I think that might be part of why it doesn't always go super great but yeah, I don't know if that insight was helpful or not but 🤷😆💜 I would say when you're choosing which pieces to list on depop, try to keep them all very consistent in style and maybe that'll help 🥰

However, I believe sales will increase while retail stores are unable to get product. Buying someone a gift that is lovely, without being at high prices, the take-off will be great. Where I live, people like to see in person, hold, and compare. I thought you were referring to that type of "live" sale. I would like to see how you would do with that type of sale as well.

I’ve been waiting for a “Posher” to a review. It’s been three minutes since I’ve been improved on what not unfortunately I had a last-minute move that I had to prepare for so I haven’t been doing any resiling for the last three months. Trying to get back into the swing of things. I was looking for your videos you have kind of a soothing motherly go-getter videos. I don’t know if I would consider you to be enthusiastic more soothing 😉 All good qualities 💜

I really love RUclips. It is a huge time requirement but I love my community here. I hope you go for it. I felt so much more at ease once I had my first auction under my belt. It can be as hyped up or relaxed as you like! Glad you got a few good deals! It's a great place to source!

Would you recommend just focusing on one show to sell clothes, another to do shoes, maybe a separate shoe to do bags, etc or should a combination of all in a single show be a better option?

Hi Lori, just wanted to let you know that you are such a natural behind the camera. Did you have help during the live show? I missed it.

I don't see anything active on your WHATNOT training video and I would really be interested. Please let me know. I don't have any social media following but have lots of "top contributor" to a lot of Facebook pages. Sold on ebay from 2001 to 2011 and then Target and all those other major companies started selling their end of season items to Goodwill. Took products out of the home income for a LOT of people. A lot of us were buying semi truck loads once a month. My granddaughters helped me put together 10 sets and accessories and sell on ebay. $90 to 110 per sale. I did children's clothing. All the clothing that fell on the floor simply got picked up and put in a big box. when the box was full they closed it up and started the next - till it would fill a semi. Pay 10 to 21 k per truckload.

I am definitely interested in selling live. I hope they approve me. I don’t know if I missed it in your video, but how long was your live show? I already have a Whatnot account so I didn’t use your link, but I mentioned your name when they asked how I knew about them.

Thank you for sharing the pros and cons. I asked for that in your IG story. Question- in the app was there audience waiting for the auction? This kinda help people who doesn’t have much followers. And how did you integrate your giveaways? How did you do that? Thank you.

Thank you for your question Nanette! I'm going to do a live tutorial on the app this Sunday. I'll walk through auction items and answer questions as I go. It is scheduled for 10:30am eastern time. There is a separate section for giveaways. It's really simple. I'll go over it on Sunday. Thanks for watching. xo
