Whatnot took our community by storm this year! After 21 shows and over 1,200 items sold I'm here to chat with you about my thoughts and reflections. My ONLY issue... Not with the platform itself, was with EVERYONE "forcing it down our throats". It was just too much from all RUclipsrs at once. A CONSTANT bombardment. It's all RUclipsrs talked about at one time. Great video with the pros and cons. Your videos are always balanced... And they make miss living in MA!

I agree, it has really divided the community. Because I have no interest in live sales, as a reseller, I've stopped watching many of the resellers that I used to learn from as I'm not learning when they're buying low price items to sell on what not. I still watch your channel but I have to admit, when you're sourcing things for what not, I leave the video.
You said what I was thinking. I have been a reseller on ebay for 3 years. There are several youtubers that I have watched the entire time. Now they have live sales and what not sales. Their shop with me now is usually about buying for their sales and the items are subpar compared to eBay items. I no longer watch them. Very disappointing.
I do the exact thing. I skip over anyone speaking on what not. I love Lori so I try to support but for ex, hairy tornado use to be one of my favs. No I barely watch him.
AHHH!!! When you scrolled through Whatnot, one of my shows showed up when you scrolled!!! That was WILD! I'm so excited :) I've been enjoying the community on Whatnot a lot.
I got on whatnot over a year ago and things have changed significantly! I’m on the vintage tee side of things and unfortunately with how saturated the platform is now, at times is not even worth it. Like everything nothing truly lasts, I think people are getting a bit bored of the app, If you pay close attention, many of the bigger sellers are not on as frequently and have begun to go back to older platforms. I think it’s still a great app, especially for buyers they’ll definitely get some great deals! Great Vid!
Hi Lori😊🔆 I am the buyer of the two items in your closet. I have received both items and I love them both! Purple is my favorite color💜 and I needed a neutral layering piece so the soft camel colored piece is perfect. So, from your closet ro mine, both items will be put to lots of good use!!
I have zero interest in live selling as both a buyer and a seller. I've tuned into quite a few shows on both WhatNot and Posh and it's just not how I like to shop. I've even watched sellers that were very engaging (like Ralli Roots) and even then I can't make it past a few minutes. No shade on them, I just don't enjoy the experience. I've tried! As a seller, I won't go live because I have no desire to go on camera. I don't have a problem with those who do, but I do wish there was some way to keep those filming their Starbucks runs off the platform because I think this cheapens the image of Poshmark not just for live sellers, but for all of us who have worked so hard on our closets. All this said, I don't have a problem with anyone who wants to do lives but I do wish there was quality control on these streams for the reason I mentioned above. I'm also wondering if Posh will have the bandwidth left to fix the fundamental problems with their platform or if all their energy is being spent on this "shiny object". All that said, I have stopped paying attention to a lot of reseller channels that only talk about WhatNot/Posh Lives anymore, but I still watch all of your videos because I love your style and how thorough you are no matter what the topic. 🙂
I can empathize with you, when I first started buying from Whatnot, it seemed a bit odd, however, after I started engaging with the chat, it turned out to be a great deal of fun.
I am not a reseller but I find this interesting. You are the consummate, professional salesperson Lori! I am incredibly fortunate in being 15 minutes away from 3 Goodwills PLUS a Goodwill BIns and find all I need if I'm patient!
i just discovered Whatnot a month ago and did my first show. I basically am using it to quickly clean out my wardrobe. I am an ebay seller but i don't want to take and download a bunch of photos, so Whatnot works well for that. I also do RUclips videos about styling clothing from each Bin haul and so it's pretty easy to talk up the auction. I appreciate the "no cancellation" policy and how easy it is to ship. And that they do that end of it. Yay! I did not think that it was intuitive to start the show, share devices and some other things. Like WHERE ARE THINGS? And if the app freezes on your phone, all you do is end the stream and make a new one. Yes, that's what i got to do on my very first show last night! (sigh) Thanks for your video.
im really late here but just recently getting into whatnot. your notes were soooo insightful!! you really hit on some very niche marketing aspects that I've thought of like how much description you put into the items beforehand, listing higher, etc. great video Lori you're a reseller legend :)
As a buyer….I have not been very satisfied. I prefer a higher quality product and I started noticing that RUclipsrs were exclusively looking for whatnot product which means it’s probably lesser quality. I don’t find that fair to a buyer.
Same here…I bought some items that should have stayed at Goodwill. I didn’t try to get refunds, but I will most likely donate the items. I deleted the app so I wouldn’t be tempted.
@@SueLW65 I am right there with you! I deleted the app after 20+ buys. I had FOMO in the sales and was rarely satisfied with the quality received. I was happy with 20% of what I bought. I considered it gambling - no longer in my budget!
Just found this video trying to understand what not more. I always can count on you for informative help. I can’t help but think you would do so well filming yourself doing your Whatnot sales and putting it on your RUclips to watch. Crazy lamp lady goes live just before her shows, and she films herself for us.
This was such a wonderful video, Lori! Very thorough and balanced. I am excited to see how Posh Live sales go for you - sounds like their biggest issues are lack of bundling (sounds like that is coming in November) and people opening cases. Those are two big bonuses on WhatNot. But if Poshmark can fix those issues I can see the clothing category shrinking on WhatNot. There's been a decline overall on WhatNot, but of course, with the time of year, most people don't have the time to spend watching auctions that they did in the summer. I will be curious if the audiences will come back after the holidays and during the winter when they are less busy. It's such an exciting time in reselling regardless....and once Ebay gets into the live sales, it will be a game changer!
Hi Lori! Great video with valuable info! I'm a fellow reseller also and selling on the Whatnot app( mid-tier designer bags). I would definitely agree with your thoughts on the pros and cons. I didn't bring over a following from any other social media platforms so building a following organically on the app is definitely more difficult(another con). I do love the sense of community though, and how supportive everyone is over on the app. I do onboarding for poshmark on the 7th as well and am looking forward to going live. You might not see this since this is an old post BUT.. do you think all of the followers on Poshmark really followed you or does the software "help" a person get followers? I've done practically nothing and have tons of followers. I lost my corporate 6 figure job in May so I'm kicking the resell business into high gear. I've always done it but never to pay the bills. Thankfully, I was a nerd in real life so navigating the different sites is not a big deal. Now, I'm just looking for the "inside" scoop to do things as well as I possibly can. I like your show. Real. I have literally BEGGED Whatnot to let me sell on their platform -- and they have denied me, twice, because I don't have a social media following. I live near 4 Goodwill Outlets!! I can literally save 100+ pounds from the landfill EVERY DAY here. I have emailed them REPEATEDLY and get denied, with videos, brand names, everything I could do... I'm hoping that if I contact enough of the youtubers I watch regularly, like you, and make enough noise on social media, they will let me sell. PLEEEEEASE HELP!! If you have a whatnot contact that is willing to chat with me, zoom with me, whatever I need to do to sell. I appreciate you!
I was notified and watch a seller I follow on Ebay. They had over 1,450 watchers in the first minutes and just kept going up!!! They were selling high end designer bags. It was not an auction and selling at full price!!!!
Really informative video Lori. When Whatnot first started I watched it quite a bit with mainly youtubers I generally would watch on RUclips anyway. I bought a couple things for myself. My frustration was really wanting something but kept getting out bid because like with Jenna Empty Hanger she has such a huge following that everyone was bidding and it became frustrating. Guess that's why I don't go to auctions lol. When I want to buy something I just buy it. The bidding process wasn't my thing. I haven't watched any shows on there for months. Nor will I watch the Poshmark lives probably to buy anyway. As a reseller myself I just don't have the time to sit and watch them just to buy something or the patience to keep bidding against other people all night and not get the item without overbidding what I felt comfortable spending. The excitement of bidding for an item can definitely get you in trouble financially if you aren't careful. I have no interest in doing it live myself to sell. But you have the personality to do great on there :)
Thank you for this! I’ve done 2 Whatnot shows and have gotten discouraged as they did not yield much profit but took lots of prep. I may give it a shot with no pictures or measurements. I have no idea about the buying side of things I’m in the uk . I can just see that whatever your doing recently your very sparkly over and that your finding it more enjoyable also thrifting with your friend too . I don’t have time to wait around hoping to find an item in my size that I want but may or may not win. I find what not tedious and don’t like they have real buyer protection or authentication
Popped into Poshmark live shows (first time) and I was surprised at how many there were and how unprofessional many of the sellers were...I am definitely spoiled by watching you!
I am just so lucky to have found your video, you’re such a pleasure to watch and listen to. We have a local antique barn and wanting to bring the items online for the FIRST TIME ! I had ZERO idea this was such a big and growing space … live sales. Certainly a lot for me to learn from so many others. I so appreciate the depth you went into AND the transparency wow ! My background as a show host and interviewer gave me the inspiration to want to showcase the antique pieces. No photos I don't shop those shows. Must have a description bought from a few and was screwed on WHATNOT purchases and had nothing to be able to fight it.
They are working on bundling .. I think they will have it out by Black Friday... I am excited about poshmark live auctions ..! I do my first show next week ..! I am seeing starting bids much higher and that sellers are understanding the value of their items and buyers and purchasing the items at a much higher starting bid ... I have noticed that when there is many shows all at once .. everyone has a good amount of people in their shows not just where one or two people have a good audience ....they are definitely working on a bundling feature and I am sure it will be great ..! I bet that Next will be Ebay live auctions LOL... In many other countries like Korea (where I was born ) and France etc.. they have been doing live auction sales for many years ... we actually have had a late start with all this but I think it's amazing ..! The holidays are near so things will be successful for us all ..!! I wish that people could opt to use calculated shipping, like on Etsy. I weigh & measure everything, it’s just routine for me. Even Mercari has calculated shipping but shipping is so inaccurate and overexpensive on Poshmark & Whatnot.
I shop both What Not and Poshmark, I prefer Poshmark because I can peruse through alll the different shows at once and find what i am looking for. I do not sit through a whole show because life. Poshmark has more of the quality items Im looking to buy. 😊

I was aware of a lot of the things you said but lots of new info here. Would you sell like items in a show or mix it up? Example a show with all clothes or add in jewelry as well maybe? How does that affect shipping?

What not still very new for all the new categories within past 1 year I really think the ones who are on now will be the OGs and will do very well I believe they will get stricter too and expand I just hope they keep USA with North America and I don’t wanna be flooded w asia or European countries but I really believe this is the new thing video sales live sales just like posh mark first 5 years was no beauty no home items they would flag u kick u out etc. what not we gotta work we gotta get on it IM new trying to learn and I love the low shipping the combined shipping too

Poshmark omg there were weeks I did 2-5 I know what now Omg we are in summer time Thabk god I notice last year n this year I feel it the COVID thing is done I did very well the past summers due to COVID but I think we r back on track where sales r best Sept-May
As a collector of a variety of things I have bought hard goods & ephemera. I was approved to sell early on but never did the onboarding. Not for me. Affiliate programs exist, I don’t have a problem with people making referral money. Live selling isn’t for everyone, you definitely need to know your numbers and maintain a professional demeanor. It will be interesting to see how posh lives grow.
I’m doing my onboarding for posh shows on the 7th as well. My sales have lowered since they have started and I understand you have to go with the flow of new trends. I do worry they will accept too many people and no one will make money especially with 20% in fees.
I’ve watched way too many WN shows and purchased probably 50-75 items. At this point, I’m only buying NWT items. I’ve been burned many times with flawed items. I’m a reseller but don’t sell on WN. It seems like most buyers on WN are resellers. I think it’s hard to “source” on WN because even though prices may seem low, the quality is usually not what I’m willing to sell on my platforms.
The part where you're talking about the energy in the room is so much like doing Stand Up Comedy. Because they're so parallel, what I've come to realize is it's actually up to the host to try to CHANGE the energy in the room, no matter if you're hosting a What Not Show, a comedy show, or something in between. Crazy, yes. But give it a shot. XOX.
Btw I am the wife, i watch you and i am a reseller in vintage decor, but i value time and 1200 items is a lot, how much time does it take to get ready ship etc. Time 😂😂is 😂😂money, and when you say Sunday omelettes sounds way better that whatnot i would think you would just want weekends not to work, you seem work lots, with so much shopping so much selling. You seeem to do well at the other platforms what not seems like a whole lot time

hello! i am coming from doing poshmark live sales and now this friday will do my first live show on poshmark-my cost of goods is very similar to you so what is a good starting price for items on whatnot? I usually start with $10-15 starts on my posh show items. Any help would be appreciated!!
Thank you for your vlogs ... great, thought-provoking content. Re PM Lives vs. WN Auctions = to me, just to me, I am more comfortable w/PM bc it's my "normal." But also, to me, WN has a definite "Bro vibe", more gritty, raw, and of the street..v this is not the right term but, maybe, WN is more gamer"? And PM Lives has a "Sis" or "girly...femme" vibe. Seems lighter, more tuned to the ladies. Almost like PM &: EB. Now, this is just my take, my feelings. I've been on both, spent a veritable fortune on both, but once PM went "live," I haven't looked back. All my PM orders, and there are many, have been bundled; and I'm sure PM will rectify this. I don't think any of my WN orders were bundled, but I could be wrong. My first show, I bought several pieces, and shipping was never brought up. I had just assumed my order would be bundled, but the joke was on me!!! Lol At PM, I've gotten great deals on high-end pieces, low enough to resell. I'm very happy w/PM tho I have restricted myself. $$. I should go give WM another shot... and i know just whose show to visit!! 😉
I have not watched the video yet, but I think that you are spot on with your interpretation of the whole gamer “bro vibe”. If I stray outside of my category at all, I hear more terms about “fire“, “gas“, “don’t sleep on it bro” and “back hits” than I ever have cared to hear. Heck, they sometimes even randomly show up in my favorite handbag category. Luckily we tend to run them out pretty quickly.

@@nannymarta4268 I completely agree! And I think that’s probably why she has so many people show up for her shows. A lot of that is subscribers, but I think for a lot of us her style is such a breath of fresh air compared to other sellers that we watch on the Whatnot app. I have tried to embrace the Poshmark live sales, but I’m just having trouble engaging. On Whatnot you really form a sense of community when you are in the same shows with the same people, which is something so unique, and that we really only experience here on RUclips, at least for us. We have made some great friends on whatnot! And with Poshmark it seems like people skip around so much. It will definitely be interesting to see how these two platforms evolve. I have been watching Lori and buying from her since before I was a Reseller and I have learned so much. So I am always so interested on her take. I love how open minded she can be, but also quite frank when she makes a fumble or something doesn’t quite work out. And I have so much mad respect for owning those gaffs and missteps and sharing and learning from them.

I think it's nice that things have settled down on Whatnot. Some have embraced it, others not but it doesn't seem to be quite so polarizing any more.

Yes I bought something (not from Lori). It was in horrible condition and trying to get a refund has been horrible.

Where I live you can exchange flawed items at Goodwill within 10 days with a receipt.

You might not see this since this is an old post BUT.. do you think all of the followers on Poshmark really followed you or does the software "help" a person get followers? I've done practically nothing and have tons of followers. I lost my corporate 6 figure job in May so I'm kicking the resell business into high gear. I've always done it but never to pay the bills. Thankfully, I was a nerd in real life so navigating the different sites is not a big deal. Now, I'm just looking for the "inside" scoop to do things as well as I possibly can. I like your show. Real. Just the facts and no hype. I will be spending time going back and watching your content. Thank you!

I have literally BEGGED Whatnot to let me sell on their platform -- and they have denied me, twice, because I don't have a social media following. I live near 4 Goodwill Outlets!! I can literally save 100+ pounds from the landfill EVERY DAY here. I have emailed them REPEATEDLY and get denied, with videos, brand names, everything I could do... I'm hoping that if I contact enough of the youtubers I watch regularly, like you, and make enough noise on social media, they will let me sell. PLEEEEEASE HELP!! If you have a whatnot contact that is willing to chat with me, zoom with me, whatever I need to do to sell. I appreciate you!

I was notified and watch a seller I follow on Ebay. They had over 1,450 watchers in the first minutes and just kept going up!!! They were selling high end designer bags. It was not an auction and selling at full price!!!!
I agree the quality is as good as in the other platforms. Now I only buy few reseller in Whatnot! I’ve seen the quality of their items.
Really informative video Lori. When Whatnot first started I watched it quite a bit with mainly youtubers I generally would watch on RUclips anyway. I bought a couple things for myself. My frustration was really wanting something but kept getting out bid because like with Jenna Empty Hanger she has such a huge following that everyone was bidding and it became frustrating. Guess that's why I don't go to auctions lol. When I want to buy something I just buy it. The bidding process wasn't my thing. I haven't watched any shows on there for months. Nor will I watch the Poshmark lives probably to buy anyway. As a reseller myself I just don't have the time to sit and watch them just to buy something or the patience to keep bidding against other people all night and not get the item without overbidding what I felt comfortable spending. The excitement of bidding for an item can definitely get you in trouble financially if you aren't careful. I have no interest in doing it live myself to sell. But you have the personality to do great on there :)
Thank you for this! I’ve done 2 Whatnot shows and have gotten discouraged as they did not yield much profit but took lots of prep. I may give it a shot with no pictures or measurements. Do you think that because you are a RUclipsr you are still doing well without the pics etc. Can that work for an every day Joe?

I have no idea about the buying side of things I’m in the uk . I can just see that whatever your doing recently your very sparkly over and that your finding it more enjoyable also thrifting with your friend too . I don’t have time to wait around hoping to find an item in my size that I want but may or may not win. I find what not tedious and don’t like they have real buyer protection or authentication

I am just so lucky to have found your video, you’re such a pleasure to watch and listen to. We have a local antique barn and wanting to bring the items online for the FIRST TIME ! I had ZERO idea this was such a big and growing space … live sales. Certainly a lot for me to learn from so many others. I so appreciate the depth you went into AND the transparency wow ! My background as a show host and interviewer gave me the inspiration to want to showcase the antique pieces. They are working on bundling .. I think they will have it out by Black Friday... I am excited about poshmark live auctions ..! I do my first show next week ..! I am seeing starting bids much higher and that sellers are understanding the value of their items and buyers and purchasing the items at a much higher starting bid ... I have noticed that when there is many shows all at once .. everyone has a good amount of people in their shows not just where one or two people have a good audience ....they are definitely working on a bundling feature and I am sure it will be great ..! I bet that Next will be Ebay live auctions LOL... In many other countries like Korea (where I was born ) and France etc.. they have been doing live auction sales for many years ... we actually have had a late start with all this but I think it's amazing ..! The holidays are near so things will be successful for us all ..!! I wish that people could opt to use calculated shipping, like on Etsy. I weigh & measure everything, it’s just routine for me. Even Mercari has calculated shipping but shipping is so inaccurate and overexpensive on Poshmark & Whatnot.
I shop both What Not and Poshmark, I prefer Poshmark because I can peruse through alll the different shows at once and find what i am looking for. I do not sit through a whole show because life. Poshmark has more of the quality items Im looking to buy. 😊

Very interesting as s buyer on whatnot and getting ready to sell on whatnot I appreciate this video. I have been selling on Poshmark and Mercari. I was aware of a lot of the things you said but lots of new info here. Would you sell like items in a show or mix it up? Example a show with all clothes or add in jewelry as well maybe? How does that affect shipping?

What not still very new for all the new categories within past 1 year I really think the ones who are on now will be the OGs and will do very well I believe they will get stricter too and expand I just hope they keep USA with North America and I don’t wanna be flooded w asia or European countries but I really believe this is the new thing video sales live sales just like posh mark first 5 years was no beauty no home items they would flag u kick u out etc. what not we gotta work we gotta get on it IM new trying to learn and I love the low shipping the combined shipping too

I have watched a few of the what not shows but never all the way through seems like a time eater at least for me.

Poshmark omg there were weeks I did 2-5 I know what now Omg we are in summer time Thabk god I notice last year n this year I feel it the COVID thing is done I did very well the past summers due to COVID but I think we r back on track where sales r best Sept-May

As a collector of a variety of things I have bought hard goods & ephemera. I was approved to sell early on but never did the onboarding. Not for me. Affiliate programs exist, I don’t have a problem with people making referral money. Live selling isn’t for everyone, you definitely need to know your numbers and maintain a professional demeanor. It will be interesting to see how posh lives grow.
But even with such a smaller audience your still selling so much more inventory which is crazy.

I’m doing my onboarding for posh shows on the 7th as well. My sales have lowered since they have started and I understand you have to go with the flow of new trends. I do worry they will accept too many people and no one will make money especially with 20% in fees.

I’ve watched way too many WN shows and purchased probably 50-75 items. At this point, I’m only buying NWT items. I’ve been burned many times with flawed items. I’m a reseller but don’t sell on WN. It seems like most buyers on WN are resellers. I think it’s hard to “source” on WN because even though prices may seem low, the quality is usually not what I’m willing to sell on my platforms.
Inhave 800 items at all times and still bearly did 5 items in summer on posh
The part where you're talking about the energy in the room is so much like doing Stand Up Comedy. Because they're so parallel, what I've come to realize is it's actually up to the host to try to CHANGE the energy in the room, no matter if you're hosting a What Not Show, a comedy show, or something in between. Crazy, yes. But give it a shot. XOX.
Btw I am the wife, i watch you and i am a reseller in vintage decor, but i value time and 1200 items is a lot, how much time does it take to get ready ship etc. Time 😂😂is 😂😂money, and when you say Sunday omelettes sounds way better that whatnot i would think you would just want weekends not to work, you seem work lots, with so much shopping so much selling. You seeem to do well at the other platforms what not seems like a whole lot time

Thank you for your vlogs ... great, thought-provoking content. Re PM Lives vs. WN Auctions = to me, just to me, I am more comfortable w/PM bc it's my "normal." But also, to me, WN has a definite "Bro vibe", more gritty, raw, and of the street..v this is not the right term but, maybe, WN is more gamer"? And PM Lives has a "Sis" or "girly...femme" vibe. Seems lighter, more tuned to the ladies. Almost like PM &: EB. Now, this is just my take, my feelings. I've been on both, spent a veritable fortune on both, but once PM went "live," I haven't looked back. All my PM orders, and there are many, have been bundled; and I'm sure PM will rectify this. I don't think any of my WN orders were bundled, but I could be wrong. My first show, I bought several pieces, and shipping was never brought up. I had just assumed my order would be bundled, but the joke was on me!!! Lol At PM, I've gotten great deals on high-end pieces, low enough to resell. I'm very happy w/PM tho I have restricted myself. $$. I should go give WM another shot... and i know just whose show to visit!! 😉
I have not watched the video yet, but I think that you are spot on with your interpretation of the whole gamer “bro vibe”. If I stray outside of my category at all, I hear more terms about “fire“, “gas“, “don’t sleep on it bro” and “back hits” than I ever have cared to hear. Heck, they sometimes even randomly show up in my favorite handbag category. Luckily we tend to run them out pretty quickly.

@@nannymarta4268 I completely agree! And I think that’s probably why she has so many people show up for her shows. A lot of that is subscribers, but I think for a lot of us her style is such a breath of fresh air compared to other sellers that we watch on the Whatnot app. I have tried to embrace the Poshmark live sales, but I’m just having trouble engaging. On Whatnot you really form a sense of community when you are in the same shows with the same people, which is something so unique, and that we really only experience here on RUclips, at least for us. We have made some great friends on whatnot! And with Poshmark it seems like people skip around so much. It will definitely be interesting to see how these two platforms evolve. I have been watching Lori and buying from her since before I was a Reseller and I have learned so much. So I am always so interested on her take. I love how open minded she can be, but also quite frank when she makes a fumble or something doesn’t quite work out. And I have so much mad respect for owning those gaffs and missteps and sharing and learning from them.
