Why this $6,400 Hasselblad is the slowest camera I’ve ever loved

  • Hasselblad’s latest digital camera, the 907X 50C, is a 740 gram metal box that can serve as a stand alone medium format digital camera or as a digital back for Hasselblad V System cameras made from 1957 onwards. At $6,400 it is the smallest digital medium format body Hasselblad has ever made, but its unique form factor takes time and patience to get used to.

    I own one, find it makes me go back to when I started learning photography in 1977, everything was manual and no post correction. So every single shot needs to be calculated and you really need to know what you want. When you get a good shot, so it is so rewarding. I haven’t touched my Sony A7r4 since I got this last November. I’m keeping this baby for my remaining life.

      I've had a similar experience. I recently bought a Nikon FM3 -- manual everything. An FM I bought circa 1979 was my first real camera, and I made some pictures that I'm pretty happy with. But it was stolen after a couple of years, and I've "upgraded," gone digital, etc, and in the process got away from the time and intentionality that preparing a shot in the old days required. When I got the FM3 not long ago, I had to re-learn taking the time to calculate exposures, think through composition and so on. It's been a good experience.

    • @MusicBent
      @MusicBent 3 года назад +38

      She did preface the comparison that it doesn’t really make sense because of the sensor size difference. Sensor size does not directly affect DoF, but it can change the circle of confusion. Long story short, the math is quite complicated, but even if DoF and viewing angle remain constant, the look of the image can be different.

    • @riemjann1
      @riemjann1 3 года назад +21

      @@MusicBent Yes, but focal length and aperture matter anyways. A photo @90mm f1.2 on medium format would of course have a blurrier background than a photo @16mm f4 on full frame, but that wouldn't be caused by only the difference in sensor size.
      I think Becca's 90mm f1.9 lens on the CFV sensor (crop factor 0.79, so about 71mm FF equivalent) and the 50mm f1.2 used on the A7c are reasonably close to make an at least somewhat accurate comparisons on the photo's looks though - that just wasn't evident from the video alone.

    It's also interesting how the A7C is seen as "keeping up with the Hasselblad" (6:30). The A7C was roughly 1/4 of the price and came out at around the same time. So is it the A7C that's "keeping up" or is it the Hasselblad that's taking similar photos to a much cheaper camera, exposing it as a device that's charging more than it's worth? The way I see it, it's the Hasselblad that's falling behind.

    My first view of a Verge review. Well done! Perhaps the best review of this camera I've seen.
    I've owned the 907x 50C since last summer and you completely nailed its review, at least in practical terms. Two additional points worth noting. First, the X system uses in-lens leaf shutters. That may be a factor for those needing flash sync speed ranges. It's also often a factor for noise, as it's the LENS that makes the shutter noise. That short 45 you're using is nearly silent but its bigger, faster brother is a CLACK!
    Second, the camera's menu system is implemented entirely on the touch screen, identical to the Hassy X1D2 50c. It's glorious simplicity. If the 907x is a studious turtle (which it is) it's certainly not due to its menu system. Zoom!
    Thanks!

    My good old Canon 5D mk2 could also be considered as quite slow with hardly any automation and outdated autofocus system, but it is still a lot of fun to use it.
    It’s still more than enough for what I do and I can’t afford anything new at that level of quality…

      5D Mark II is a legend. Medium format territory in regards of quality. I wouldn't sell it!

    I have the H4D, it definitely slows me down. I take my time on every shot, kind of nice!! I would love to try the 907X 50C soon......

    I learned a really cool trick today wit this - I shoot automotive on an H6D 100c and getting the overhead shots is tricky, even with a WL finder so I tried turning this little baby upside down, flipping out the screen for a downward angle view knowing that I would have to flip it in post - oh no you don't - it corrects the image automatically!!!!! Cool thing

    As always perfect video! I personally literally would have nothing to criticise.
    What would interest me though is, if you’re going to get other models of Hasselblad‘s lineup. I really would like to know how the rest of their lineup stacks up against their competitors.
