    I had an Ogre Magi character that got hold of a Hammership in 2nd ed. He became chief of a small clan of Ogre Magi. He became sort of an anti-pirate or privateer. He was lawful-neutral and honored his "contracts" to the letter. Flying the flag of whoever was paying the bills. He ended up retiring to a small moon that he gained title of, and I retired the character. It's astounding what a group of Ogre-Magi can do if they operate as a unit.

    I’m pretty sure the Flying Fish is the old Tradesman ship.
    And the space whales are the Kindori, living things not ships… except there’s some Kindori that have been tamed and have people riding on them. And then there’s a Leech ship that can be attached to a Kindori or Dragon that saps the Lifeforce of the creature and allows it to be piloted as a ship. Whereas the Battle Dolphin just looks similar.
    There appears to be a Kindori miniature on the battlemat with ship miniatures in the miniature promo video.

    I played an ulitharid psionicist that had a rather unique 70-ton octopus. I had found the keel of the ship laid out, but it was unfinished. I used the psionic ward power(a kind of psionic wall of force type power) to complete the ship. It had the appearance of a standard ship except it hull was shift shades of black.
    I had replaced the bowstring of the ship with a great bombard from the ship I had been currently using at the time. I also topped out the octopus. We had just started the fist of darkness campaign and I had just obtained a pool helm from the wolf ship/nautiloid encounter I used to power my new octopus. Since the pool helm actually powered the ship, I used my thrall to helm it, and I captained it.
    70 ton ship with 300 hull points, it's ar was standard but it had an Mc of b, and a Sr of 14 due to being overpowered.
    It was a fast attack stealth hunter killer. Lol it was a blast. For other ideas our human mage had err... acquired a cuttlefish command ship he made into a mobile mage tower. Our human fighter had a Hammersmith. Our halfling rogue had a trilop. Our elven archer had an elven cutter carrier with 2 mosquitoes fighters.

    Roger Dean is an English artist that did a lot of work for Atlantic Records back in the 1970s (yeah, Old Far..., ehr, Dude here). His first album cover for the prog rock band Yes was for "Fragile" in 1971. On the cover, you can see sort of a flying fish/galleon hybrid docked on the surface of the 'Little World'. The flying fish/galleon appears in later artwork for Yes, particularly the 3 record concert album "yessongs" in 1973, where it's seen shepherding fragment of the fragile 'Little World' through space after it became unstable and broke apart. As such it predates the original Dungeons & Dragons box set of 1974 (TSR 2002).

    I've always been a fan of the Damselfly, Nautiloid, Elven & Neogi ships. If memory serves me the Drow started off using converted Elven ships, the exposed decks were frequently domed to counter the Drow's sunlight vulnerability before as the lore progressed they became allied to then masters of the Neogi & the Neogi ships became the official Drow ships. Neogi being spiders & their ships all looking like spiders lend themselves to being connected to Drow & the Spider Queen Lolth. Not sure if this all happened during the AD&D era or if the Neogi-Drow connection came in 3rd Ed. I don't currently have access to my old Spelljammer books but i'm sure somebody else will confirm this or tell me i'm imagining things :)

    The ships that I'm disappointed didn't make the cut from the original are the Vipership ( if Maverick from top gun was in spelljamming he'd be piloting one) fast well armed VERY maneuverable!!
    Octopus a very good heavy combat ship a little bit bigger then the Hammership a little bit better armed but I love the look .
    Cuttle command same style of look as the Octopus bit it travels in a vertical orientation so it's basically a mages tower in space . Ogre Mammoth just an over all thick boi ship heavily armed crazy big .
    Armada Monarch an elven butterfly type ship basically a super carrier in the void .

    so wait if the bombard is armed with a massive cannon then that means they have black powder armaments', why doesn't every ship use cannons instead of billistas and catapults? a cannon would be far more effective.

    • @gameon_ct
      @gameon_ct  2 года назад

      Depends on who you ask.
      Lore specific, it just hasn't made its way around the spheres yet.
      Some DM's with much more history than I tend to say that the magic users regulate the use of gunpowder, as they're the ones who can only unleash destruction

    • @michaelbender5600
      @michaelbender5600 2 года назад +2

      Original rules smoke powder charges were pricey and the great bombard used multiple charges and was slow loading so cheap fast shooting backup guns were valuable . If you wanted multiple smoke powder weapons you used a giff clipper instead .
      Plus using smoke powder in the phlogiston would ignite the phlogiston so you would hurt yourself as much as you damage the enemy so you were limited to ballistae, catapults ,and jettisoned mainly when you left a crystal sphere .
