Same here and I lost 106 games in a row to a level 6 computer. Still haven't won a single game against it...that's probably why I was able to guess it because I've lost so many times.

"I'm Ben Finegold filling in for Mike Kummer." "I'm gonna take a page outta Mike's book and insult, as much as possible, total beginners, because that seems the fairest." Finegold is attempting to fulfill his substitution duty to its fullest, including the usual atmosphere of the class.
At 31:48, why didn't white move knight to E6? He would be attacking the rook, queen, and bishop. Am I missing something that would deter him from making that move?

Actually MR. Professor, Chess GrandMaster Ben Finegold the 1st. I did guess Rook h4. So I took great offense to your declaration of my guess to be incorrect SIR. Tough crowd BTW
Can someone explain to me why at 27:02 if black moved Rook to F7 how it would be a bad move? He protects queen from Rook to G6 and if he takes the rook with the queen you can move king or queen to take queen.
At 18:46, moving white queen to take pawn E6 should stop checkmate, no? That puts black king in check, and it has line of sight to the H3 pawn that’s being attacked.
@5:16 When Ben says “Free knights are good,” if some1 said “especially at hotels,” would’ve been Hilarious. I only say that bc Ben’s humor-he would’ve def cracked up or added a 1-liner haha. Thanks 4 all the great videos!! Always educational & entertaining
As a beginner beginner I understood so much of what he was saying it suprised me; he is really good and engaging. I can only imagine how entertaining this would be if I understood more of his jokes.
Interesting, however... As Meredith said, "I'm an American, we don't study any of this" Seriously, none of them even know it's German (does the kid who said "German?" really count?). And then English doesn't have a /ts/ phoneme, so even if they did know this stuff, a native English speaker would have to specially train their articulatory tract just to code-switch into German to two words, which is a bit suspicious if you ask me.
"itself" and "outside" are two common English words with that phoneme. You can find it also in many plural or genitive case words, like "contents", "lots", "pants", "shorts" and so on. I don't think this needs any special training. :)
English does not have a /ts/ phoneme. It has /t/+/s/ clusters. Notice that in every example you gave the [ts] appears either across a syllable boundary or morpheme boundary. Notice also that syllable-initial *[ts] is disallowed in English, though it is allowed elsewhere, which would be extraordinarily odd if [ts] were a phoneme. In contrast, it is well-accepted that German has a /ts/ phoneme. Notice that it appears syllable-initially twice in "zugwang". English speakers have no experience with this pattern of sound production, so some time must be set aside to practice production if they are ever to get it right. I am trying to decide if you are a German, or a native English speaker who has learned German and is trying to show off their accent. If the latter, you've got no excuse; if the former, just remember that Germans pronounce loanwords from English "wrong" too, at least by your standards.
I am a German, and yes, my English is terrible. :) I get your argument, yet I don't believe that it is hard to learn this. I'll ask friends who are native English speakers the next time I meet them.
firsttime i watched this it was for the jokes... after playing lots n lots of games im back and those "basics" about developing, castling, hanging pieces... if youre a beginner this stuff is essential, pay attention
22:57 "g5 I wish you were better at chess so you would realize how bad g5 is. So someday when you're a grandmaster come look at this lecture on youtube, look at g5 and go: "O man, now I know what he meant" [...] g5 here's if I had an engine which I do but it would take me seconds to find so I'm not going to look for it. They would say g5 is the worst." Actually, g5 is the best move in this position accordingly to Stockfish 8: 10.... g5 11.Bg3 Ne4 12.Ne5 Nxe5 13.Bxe5 f6 14.Bg3 e5 15.Qh5 Bf5 16.Bxe4 dxe4 17.Qxh6 Rf7 18.Qh5 exd4 19.cxd4 Rh7 20.Qe2 Be6 21.O-O Bd5 22.h3 Qe7 23.Rfc1 Rf8 24.Rab1 Qf7 25.Rb2 Bc6 26.Qd1 f5 27.Be5 Qe6 28.Qc2 f4 29.Rcb1 fxe3 There were three bad moves in this game by Black: 8...a6; 15...b5 (instead of e5); 16...Qe7 (instead of Kg7), which led to the Black defeat. Following 18...Qg7 (instead of Qe8) and then 19...Ra7 (instead of e5) made the very bad situation even worse.
At 27:42, couldn't Black go QH6 and take the Rook then move his Rook to F7 freezing the White Queen that just took his Queen? Or is it just assumed that being down a Queen he will eventually lose.
The linguistic origin of "Zwischenzug" (and "Zugzwang") is easier to recognize if pronounced the German way (with "ts" as in "cats" instead of "z" as in "zoo")
i used to watch this channel on my other youtube channel everyday when these videos came out. came back right now and dont see any more ben finegold. im depressed
Sorry. I'm bad at chess but at 18:25 wouldn't the correct defense would be White Knight E2 not to protect the pawn but attacking the rook instead? In fact, the play before that where he moves his queen away from the queen trade I'd still make the Knight E2 play because I would still trade queens but I would move the rightmost rook to a more central position and still have the knight attacking your rook. Am I wrong?
Heaven Studios after Ne2, Qxh3; Nxd4, Rxd4; then the only way to prevent checkmate the next move (.., Rg4#) is to sacrifice the queen to move the rook and make space for the king to escape. Then again, you're just delaying the inevitable
There is another continuation actually, after .., Qxh3; f3, but .., Rh4; then everything beside Qxh4, losing the queen, lead to checkmate in one (if Rf2 or Qf2 are played, simply .., Qh1#; otherwise, .., Qh2#) EDIT: .., Qxh3; Nxd4, Rxd4; f3, Rh4 this is a better continuation, since the checkmate can now be prevented by Qd2. Then I guess the game will be open again, so probably Qxh3 isn't the best answer to Ne2, which probably is the best move in that position. Bravo!
Believe it or not I just won a knockout tournament final today using this technique. I watched the video in the noon and the match was in the evening. My opponent kept his King in the center. I used two rooks, a bishop, a knight, and the queen to attack and he just resigned.

I am a German, and yes, my English is terrible. :) I get your argument, yet I don't believe that it is hard to learn this. I'll ask friends who are native English speakers the next time I meet them.
@21:25 Qa4 gets a free bishop, right? Please reply if I'm mistaken.
firsttime i watched this it was for the jokes... after playing lots n lots of games im back and those "basics" about developing, castling, hanging pieces... if youre a beginner this stuff is essential, pay attention
This guy is so entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
Me: "Rook H4."
Finegold: "You at home! Incorrect! I played Rook H4"
Me: "Goddamnit."
With years of hard work and dedication I might be good enough for this guy to call me a beginner.
They would say g5 is the worst."
Actually, g5 is the best move in this position accordingly to Stockfish 8:
10.... g5 11.Bg3 Ne4 12.Ne5 Nxe5 13.Bxe5 f6 14.Bg3 e5 15.Qh5 Bf5 16.Bxe4 dxe4 17.Qxh6 Rf7 18.Qh5 exd4 19.cxd4 Rh7 20.Qe2 Be6 21.O-O Bd5 22.h3 Qe7 23.Rfc1 Rf8 24.Rab1 Qf7 25.Rb2 Bc6 26.Qd1 f5 27.Be5 Qe6 28.Qc2 f4 29.Rcb1 fxe3
There were three bad moves in this game by Black: 8...a6; 15...b5 (instead of e5); 16...Qe7 (instead of Kg7), which led to the Black defeat.
Stanislav Spassov haha so true, my ears turned around
As I heard that
i used to watch this channel on my other youtube channel everyday when these videos came out. came back right now and dont see any more ben finegold. im depressed
18:35 Rh4, come one, I was so excited to be included, and then I don't even get credit?
He giveth, he taketh away...
A better move then Kh7, nonetheless, so you're right
There is another continuation actually, after .., Qxh3; f3, but .., Rh4; then everything beside Qxh4, losing the queen, lead to checkmate in one (if Rf2 or Qf2 are played, simply .., Qh1#; otherwise, .., Qh2#)
EDIT: .., Qxh3; Nxd4, Rxd4; f3, Rh4 this is a better continuation, since the checkmate can now be prevented by Qd2. Then I guess the game will be open again, so probably Qxh3 isn't the best answer to Ne2, which probably is the best move in that position. Bravo!
@@gabrielefiappo813 ah! So he was wrong. I wasn't wrong. x'D
Believe it or not I just won a knockout tournament final today using this technique. I watched the video in the noon and the match was in the evening. My opponent kept his King in the center. I used two rooks, a bishop, a knight, and the queen to attack and he just resigned.
Board state at 27:00. What happens if black moves his rook forward to F7? It protects the queen and is protected from being taken by whites queen.
