Think of it this way. He believed in himself and was all about that whole self-fulfilling prophecy mindset. People rip Luke for it, but McGregor thought himself clairvoyant. His desire, belief and work ethic made him a force.
Then he came up against another force. He likely believed his mindset was what led to the Diaz defeat. It was a short notice fight. He wasn’t prepared. He’s THE star, of a company that is going globally mainstream in an emerging sport. He’s allowed to slip. His comeback was almost messianic.
He was never reprimanded and instead encouraged to keep pushing. Don’t defend the title, that’s not moving forward, staying at featherweight would be stagnant, and to be stagnant is to regress. Got the LW gold and it was his reward for his belief and stubbornness. For being allowed to shirk the responsibilities of one championship for another.
Then enters Floyd. Remember, at this time people were talking about Rhonda beating him. It only made sense to hold up the titles, his rise was more important. With him the whole sport would rise, which tbf, it kinda did in a way, and fell in others.
Even Dana is backing him. Dana never would co-promote. No MMA fighter at this time was ever invited into the ring with a boxer of Floyd’s calibre. Plus, Floyd was older. Past his best. Not active like him.
And after that loss I genuinely believe his mindset changed. No run back. MMA has new champions. No blockbuster hits. He went back to Ireland, and took his first real L. But made more money than he ever had in his life. So, why not enjoy the rest and come back when you’re ready.
Then when he felt he was, when he felt he could get a hero’s welcome (not getting that against Tony who people loved for his ultra violence) he came back to beat another wrestler.
But yeah, that was khabib. A guy who McGregor probably really thought he could crack mentally. Sure he might not get him scared, he realises that isn’t gonna happen after the bus incident. So he then takes jabs at him personally. Religion, family, friends and affiliates. He’s gonna get this guy so worked up, just like all the other guys in the cage, he’s here because he’s got buttons you can push.
Only khabib’s big red button, led to focused destruction. At the biggest event in ufc history. With everyone watching his return, McGregor got knocked down, taken down, trash-talked and then tapped. Submitted. I Ben in the chaos afterwards, it was the reverse of the bus incident. Mcgregor looked like the one needing protection. He had security around him in protection, Khabib had security pulling him out of the fray. In battle terms it may have been the most demoralising moment for Conor professionally. You can see that in his
Demeanour whenever he even gets near any of khabib or his camps name.
So he went away again. Dealt with the legal issues, kept being a business man. Returned on his own terms, but what most would say was in a humbled and more calm manner. The handpicked opponent on Cerrone I’m sure helped. Add to that the dominant nature of the victory and Conor’s confidence was back.
Maybe this was all it was. With the legal troubles. Owning a developing brand and putting himself up for movies. Being a dad. Fighting for the love of the game. That was the key to the next phase of his greatness.
Then came Dustin. Losing that fight threw any of those previous notions in the trash. The memes afterwards. The nature of the loss. The fact it was a rematch. Conor is the one who wins rematch’s, he’s the one who is meant to be more learned, how could Dustin KO him?!
Then Conor went backwards, had his leg snap, ‘starred’ in a hit movie and we have the current cycle of him keeping his name relevant however possible whilst likely realising he’s done with being a contender in the fight game.
Rollercoaster journey, and one I can confidently say nobody in these comments has been through. So yeah o get it, dudes a polarising figure and that, but I’m just saying if you look at it from a more nuanced perspective, the man is an amazing and poetic study in how far personal belief can help you rise and fall. Dude achieved a point in life where he could literally make some of his wildest dreams a reality, only to realize there was no way to get that power, that time, that invincibility, back.

He has the mental strength to overcome anything.
He might be entering realms off some substance use but so have I in period of couple years than quit all overnight went to boot camp and came out clean and absolute machine serving in US infantry for over 9 years with multiple medals and honors.
Now a father of two boys, 46 years old with body off body builder and stamina off a Lion.
Meaning I take my power naps and go workout hard in the gym.
Connor will be back and hope he does not go much further on the path of substance use.
Alcohol is bad enough if used daily for years especially when mixed with other stuff.

Conor never showed an ounce of weakness in his prime but khabib broke him in a way that men with egos that big normally never experience. But he also brought a lot of it on himself too, he said things and did things to tarnish his name and then got beat up for it. It’s just insane to see such a character fade into being just another celebrity
