I have a 2019 TRD OR Prem and love it. I couldn't justify the cost diff between the OR and the PRO. For that money I can upgrade the parts that I want to make it my own. Yeah, it would be cool to have the Pro badging but "I don't need no stinking badges!" One cool thing now is that in CA you can upgrade the cold air intake to TRD or another manufacturer. This was considered illegal until 2020.

If you are looking to resell, you are right. I look at the 5th gen TRD 4runs and especially the TRD PROs as an iconic vehicle and if you can keep it in shape for 20+ years the resale on that will be similar to what the original FJ40s are going for now.

This is true. There’s a reason everyone says buy a slightly used Off Road Premium. They sell for less. The trick is to find a New* TRD Pro for MSRP. It’s rare but if you can find it maybe lease it for two years with an option to buy and see how you like it. They are actually extremely cheap to lease since they depreciate very little (I shouldn’t even be telling you this). In fact, a new TRD Pro will usually lease for less per month than all the lower trims.

So is it worth over Off Road? My opinion - yes. First argument - Toyota almost never overcharges you on the parts - if there are some additional parts added on higher trim is just only the price of those parts when sold separate at Toyota, nothing more. No extra money, no charge for the work having those installed when you order the trim from the factory.
So the ~$8000 difference between them:
    1. TRD Pro first difference vs the Off Road trim - the Fox shocks. What it gives you? About 1 inch higher cleareance than on the Off Road trim(the TRD Pro is visible higher), less body roll and plus better control. Yes, the TRD Pro has the true 10 inch clearance or 9.8" as the manual specs say. The Off Road trim in reality has only ~8.7" and not 9.8" as the book says. I measured myself the clearance on both trims. The parts cost for all 4 sides - about $2300 online at Toyota. Toyota charges you something for install on the PRO? NO. Eventually you buy it to install them on the Off Road trim? The $2300 difference and plus the work hours to pay someone to install it for you. So it may go up to $3000, best scenario.
    2. Second big difference TRD Pro vs Off Road - Climate Control. Yes, the dual-zone automatic climate control on TRD Pro. Will you ever be able to add it to your Off Road trim yourself? NEVER. Different ECM, different temperature control modules, different AC Air Amplifier electronic modules, different air flow control motors and different air ducts and many many more other things to change. Forget about it.
    3. TRD Pro Remote Connect from the Toyota app with remote engine start from the smartphone and key fob, remote lock/unlock, alerts and other things - not available on the Off Road and impossible to be installed. Unless, again, theoretically you change the ECM and other things. Do you really want to do such pain in the *ss work? I bet not. And Toyota won't let you to integrate such vehicle into their system.
    4. Off Road tires and rims come standard on TRD Pro vs Off Road comes with simple regular highway tires and standard rims. Price of them separate at Toyota? Somewhere at a total of ~$2000. Theoretically if you sell your factory Off Road standard tires and rims, most probably you won't be able to sell them at the original price, but let's assume a total difference of only $1000. Again Toyota doesn't charge you for work, they already come installed from the factory on TRD Pro.
    5. Skid plate - same price as a separate one at Toyota.
    6. The TRD Pro roof rack - very distinctive. And don't hate it or consider it as non-functional. It is very functional with two level of height for the bars, because the largest and longest existing Thule/Yakima cargo boxes can be installed with no problem, plus a very positive thing - the back door or hatch won't hit the cargo box because it sits perfectly and high enough on the TRD Pro roof rack.
    6. JBL Premium audio system with 15 speakers and woofer, comes standard from the factory on TRD Pro - do you really want to remove all the interiors of your Off Road trim to install all the audio wires, speakers, changing the plastic panels to fit the new system? I pretty sure you won't like to do this tremendous work on your car. Plus the cost of the parts and labor.
    7. Automatic turn on lights on TRD Pro. Unavailable on Off Road trim and theoretically impossible to install.
    And other minor different things.
Do you think worths buying an Off Road trim and trying to bring it close to the options of a TRD Pro? My opinion NO. Some options are impossible to be installed as the car parts can't be changed.
If you really want all the different options then go straight and buy the TRD Pro. It saves your lifetime and money. Remember - Toyota doesn't overcharge you.

Pushing Pistons I feel you! Many people build their cars and go straight on the dyno for a tune haha. My biggest thing is just because you have all of the assembly lube still in the engine, you should drive it like 500-1000 miles and flush it out for some fresh oil. Engines these days are manufactured and created great though to where it probably wouldn’t affect the longetivity

    • @tunerworld

Reptileman110 Yep!! That’s usually the proper break-in procedure. I like doing it at 500 just to get the assembly lube out and then driving it easy for another 500 miles before ripping on it. This lets the rod bearings and the crank journals properly mate to eachother

I am an owner of a 2020 TRD Off-Road. I originally was planning to go with a TRD Pro because of the "street cred". If you plan on modifying the truck then get an Off-Road. You can build a much more capable rig for less than MSRP on a TRD Pro.

    • @seabiscuit726142
      @seabiscuit726142 3 года назад

Unless you get an Off Road with the KDSS that limits your options. In Canada you can't opt out the KDSS on the Off Road trim. That leaves the SR5 the most logical platform for an overland rig. Higher lifts, aftermarket locking diffs, skid plates, etc.

Reptileman110 The SR5 does not have the same 4WD systems as the TRD PRO and TRD Off Road. So it’s not really comparable. The jump in off-road capability from the SR5 to the TRD Off Road is pretty significant for very little increase in cost. The increase in capability from the TRD Off Road to the TRD PRO is minimal, despite the huge jump in MSRP.

This car only makes sense with Toyota's diesel engines, 3L six or 4L V8! Unless you own a gas station!!

Is this a rumor? I heard the TRD pro does NOT have the KDSS, is that true? Becouse my 2017 Off Road has it

I bought the TRD offroad and added the PRO components and saved 8-10k. The PRO Definitely overpriced, in my opinion.

Just get an sr5 and then modify it . The pro is totally overrated garbage . All marketing hype . If it had a stock v8 or a supercharger then it’s worth it !

what a moron ! Waste your money on something that only has entry to mid level suspension. FYI I have a off road with better suspension than a pro . I would never will buy any American name brand vehicle.

TRD Off Road base is where it's at. Paying over MSRP is absurd. Only fools would do that. They can have their silly little paint choices on the Pro that fools pay for.
