Watching from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Thank you for the excellent comparison video between the Off Road and Pro. As a result I purchased a new 2023 4Runner TRD Pro based on my preferences and looking forward to delivery early 2023.
I’m from western Massachusetts and I ordered a TRD pro in Lunar Rock back in September and finally picked it up today! The 4wd works great in the snow which we got today! The color is beautiful and changes in different light from green to blue to grey ! Love it!

I'm out here in Los Angeles, I recently purchased a TRD OffRoad Premium, I was always a bit envious of the TRD Pro's, after watching this video, I am very satisfied I sent with the OffRoad Premium over the pro. Only thing on the pro over my premium I like are the rims, but that's an easy fix. Thanks for making this video, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!
Thanks soo much for comparing the suspension KDSS VS. Fox Shocks. Soo helpful! Your videos are awesome, because you go the extra mile! Your passion for Toyota speaks through your videos! Thank you!
Took delivery of my 2021 TRD ORP in Gray this past Friday! I was on the fence about getting a Pro, but this video really helped me decide on the ORP. The only thing I wasn't expecting was the hump when folding the rear seats down. I went with no sliding cargo deck and thought I'd still get a completely flat floor when I folded the seats down but it has the small hump. Not a huge deal, just thought the hump was a TRD Pro thing lol. Other than that, I love my new 4Runner

Hey Jeff, the difference between the two rear floors with the seats folded down (hump vs no hump) is because the Premium you’re showing has the optional sliding deck, which raises the height of the floor behind the folded down seats, whereas the Pro you’re showing doesn’t have it. Presumably, the floor “flatness” isn’t a trim difference, but just a result of whether your TRD has the optional sliding deck or not.
I live in Wyoming. The TRD PRO is my first choice. The ground clearance with the extra skid plate, the grill, the tires and the Fox Suspension are the deciding factors in my choice. Also the resale will be much better on the TRD PRO. The wiser option for someone who could not afford the TRD PRO price tag would definitely be the TRD Off Road. They would probably be comparable in off road ability in most situations.

Salt Lake City. Just bought a 2018 Toyota 4runner Off-Road in New York thanks to my brother in law. Gonna fly back and drive that baby home. From all the videos I have seen these are awesome vehicles. I can't wait for my cross country drive home.
Good review! Loving my 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium. Just over 60k miles (17.9mpg), entirely trouble-free, including countless trails in CO, UT, AZ, NV, CA 💪🏼 My ORP has everything I need and nothing I didn’t want (no slide tray, no sunroof, no sissie start button, no silly basket, no leather, no KDSS). I modded it as desired, when desired (why get a Pro?!?). Great off-road capability and dependability! Watching from the Midwest...
HI there, understood you may not like sunroof, how about KDSS? I have no idea should I get it or not, I may not drive to so many states so many types of road like you do (90% of time in the city). Im currently thinking about SR5 premium(Motortrend suggested) or TRD ORP(which I preferred), would like to hear some advice from you. Thanks!
Great video. My wife and I are in the market for a 4Runner. We were thinking about getting the PRO but knowing all this information now, I’m definitely going to start looking for an Off-road premium now.
Vikings Garage in the house here!! From the green state of New Jersey, great review/comparison!! Thank you for what you do, it helps a lot of people. 👏🏻👏🏻 I’m personally in the Market for a TRD PRO mainly for the out the box off road readiness and most importantly the DUAL CLIMATE CONTROL which will not come in the TRD OFF ROAD. It’s the one thing we bump heads in long rides. Inside Cabin Temperature 😂😂 Keep up the good work!! 💪🏻
Definitely go with the TRD Off-Road Premium, however, there are two features the Pro has which you cannot get on the TRD-OR Premium: dual zone automatic climate control and the JBL stereo system. Wish I could get those on the TRD-OR Premium. Correct me if I’m wrong! Watching from Arizona!
Hi Jeff!!! I was there yesterday looking to get a 4runner, make an offer and sleep overnight on it... Wake up and your video was recommended!!! Going back today to get the one we test drive yesterday... Good awesome little tanks!!!
I'm in Palm Springs, California. I drive 2021 TRD Off Road Premium. I really appreciate Jeff's videos because of the professionalism. Sound is always great. Camera shots on point. Would like to see more videos on how screen works, and driver controls. And how the many controls work such as crawl control, the stick shift, etc. Keep up the great work Jeff.
Watching from Los Angeles. Currently trying to get a TRD off-road premium I’ve slowly become obsessed with these things especially in silver. Cannot wait till the day I own one thanks for the video
Stationed at Fort Bragg but currently deployed! Looking to trade in my Tacoma for a TRD Pro 4Runner when I come home and you’ve helped seal my decision!
Watching from Lexington, NC...right down US-64 from Raleigh. I just ordered a black metallic 2021 TRD Premium in Asheboro. 4Runners are scarce everywhere, mine won't arrive until late June or July. Just can't wait. I'm so glad there's a bonafide body on frame SUV still being made that isn't a Jeep. This will be my first ever Toyota, but I'm already impressed with the few I've driven.
Jeff: Thanks so much for letting me know the back seat lies flat on the ORP over the Pro. That is a detail that only you knew. Why does the Pro not lie flat?
Watched about a million of your vids before going to hopefully buy a 4Runner today. Toyota owes you a raise for putting this out there. Wish I could have bought off you for all the work you do
Thanks for the comprehensive video. Bottom line: there is virtually no difference between the two except the Pro has the different Fox springs/suspension, meaty wheels, cool skid plate , custom emblems and a roof rack that few like. No doubt about it, the pro simply looks more bitch'en, but if you're not going to crawl boulders with that rig you're paying about 8 grand more for the bitch'en look. Seems like Premium is the prudent buy.
Too bad KDSS is a regional unless you special order. None of the 4Runners on dealer floors in the Minneapolis (MN) metro area have them equipped. I didn't know that until recently, and couldn't understand why it has been pretty much impossible finding a local 4Runner new/used with KDSS.
@@freezingCode Toyota has a VIN search that will give you all the specs of a vehicle by VIN. I used it as the dealer often didn’t know what they had and I couldn’t go look at every sticker. IMO, it’s worth it. It makes a significant difference in how the vehicle handles/performs on and off-road.
@@promethea8916 it helps with on road and off road suspension performance. Much stiffer ride on road and better articulation off road. It’s a different vehicle with KDSS.
Im thinking about getting the TRD ORP, but other articles suggest SR5 Premium with 4WD, I have no plan to lift my future 4Runner(maybe change to a set of tire with a bit more off-road look) , thinking about going with KDSS and moonroof. What's the durability of this KDSS? Will it require extra care in the long term? I don't go off-road a lot, may need to drive into the mountain with snow road. Please advice, any thoughts welcomed, big thanks!

I’ll be getting my first 4Runner this year! Love the TRD Pro, but I’m not a fan of the roof basket. Leaning towards the ORP. Planning to do some mods like installing the Toyota grill and adding more black accents :)
This is a great video as I am currently trying decide between these two models. Question for you @Toyotajeff in Raleigh - Why are their differences in the back when seats are folded down on the TRD Pro and Off Road Premium? Are there ANY other differences with the interior at all?
I just got a off road premium in my opinion the only differences are the tires, rims, roof rack , skid plate , heritage style grill , inside the diferentes are jbl sound system and I believe you don't need an adapter for your chargers in the prov
Thanks for the comparison! I am seriously considering trading in my 2019 Forester for a 2021 4Runner Off-road Premium (yes, I know they are different animals.) I've been a Subaru guy for the last 20 years, but I'm tired of having mechanical issues. I wish I could get the Pro, but my wife won't approve it...
What mechanical issues are you having or have had that were headaches? I have a 2018 Forester with 90k miles on it and worried about it after 100k. Looking into 4runner which has been my goal car for the last 10 years.
@@andydufresnejr Mostly head gasket failures. My 2009 Outback's head gasket failed 3 times, two of which happened on road trips. The third failure seized the engine entirely at about 150,000 miles. Also had a 2000 Outback which had two head gasket leaks. My 1996 Legacy began developing transmission issues, as well as leaking valve cover gaskets. My 2019 Forester, which was a very nice-handling car, seemed to be developing a slip in its transmission at highway speeds and I eventually traded it for a 2021 4Runner, which has been stellar so far. I love the effectiveness of Subaru AWD, but the general unreliability is too big a tradeoff, given my experiences with the brand.
Hi Jeff I'm from Iowa. I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited with 224,000 miles. I'm hoping to get 400,000 miles out of it. You can't beat the reliability of the Toyota 4Runner. I prefer the TRD Pro. You do an awesome job explaining everything and your sense of humor is awesome.
The reason the load floor was different on the TRD ORP with the seats down was only because of the tray in the back. Without that they are the same. I just bought an ORP 2 weeks ago. The wheels are hideous. The 2016 wheels that weren't two tone were so much better.
From Beaumont Calif; have had 6 Toyota vehicles: 1999 forerunner, passed on to my daughter and son, brand new 2004 Rav 4; traded it in for brand new 2006 Forerunner, traded it in for brand new Tundra ( vehicle was so large for me, ) Toyota dealership exchanged it with brand new Tacoma, and after 2 years, I traded it in for 2015 fore runner and had been so happy ever since ( good deal, fully loaded 4x4; and the 7 seater really came in handy); now at this very moment, my daughter and son are vying to purchase my ever faithful silver bullet since I will be leaving the country pretty soon, Good job Jeff for your vid of comparison, if I decide to stay in the country, I will opt for the grandson silver bullet again! Anyhow, everyone: Live, Love LIFE with TOYOTA!,!,!!,
I thought the same but I like the Lunar rock color and Westcott offers a spacer lift that you can run 33s without any other changes so trying that. Comes to same cost as if I did 3” full lift on Premium and I get exhaust, roof rack, resale value, and upgraded audio. None of which I “need” but I’m old and splurging...

Thanks!
@@samcui5680 I’d get the ORP. With the kind of driving you do, maybe KDSS is a good option, but simplicity = reliability. Good luck!
Was hoping to find some overland guys here. Noticed you don't have any videos uploaded yet. I would love to see some of the trails you've been on.
Great video. My wife and I are in the market for a 4Runner. We were thinking about getting the PRO but knowing all this information now, I’m definitely going to start looking for an Off-road premium now.
Watching from Guam, USA. Can’t wait to be home. TRD Off Road Premium.
@RTX3090 SLI owner Vote what?
Vikings Garage in the house here!!
From the green state of New Jersey, great review/comparison!!
Thank you for what you do, it helps a lot of people. 👏🏻👏🏻
I’m personally in the Market for a TRD PRO mainly for the out the box off road readiness and most importantly the DUAL CLIMATE CONTROL which will not come in the TRD OFF ROAD.
It’s the one thing we bump heads in long rides. Inside Cabin Temperature 😂😂
Keep up the good work!!
I heard the JBL SUCKS on the pro bro
And the resale value.
Watching from California. Recently got the 2021 TRD PRO in Lunar Rock. I am still in awe of the color every time I see it. :)
Both are awesome looking vehicles. I'm looking into getting one myself, but I might go with TRD off road instead.
Hmm I’m not sure why. I appreciate the compliment thanks!!
Because of the sliding tailgate!
@@jackbailey3 Thanks Jack...this has puzzled me for a couple of weeks now.
Watching from Oakdale California. Still own my 2008 4 runner!
Unless you plan to go big on lift (over 3”), I cannot recommend KDSS enough. It’s game changing for how your 4Runner will drive & feel.
Why?
In North Carolina just like you brother. Current 2004 4Runner owner here and it's running like a champ!
Riverside, California (Got my 20' Tacoma TRD Sport from Toyota Redlands)
Riverside County here. Watching from work Murrieta
Canada, southern Ontario. Love the enthusiastic reviews!! Looking to buy our first 4Runner and looking at the TRD Off-Road Premium. Thanks for putting this together!
I’ll be getting my first 4Runner this year! Love the TRD Pro, but I’m not a fan of the roof basket. Leaning towards the ORP. Planning to do some mods like installing the Toyota grill and adding more black accents :)
You buy orp, and them want to make it look like a pro?
Hi Jeff,
Thank you for the comparison, it is very much appreciated and I hail from Greenwich Connecticut.
Cheers from Warsaw, Poland. This comparison is very relevant for me as we plan to visit US in 2022 and buy one of those, thanks for review!
Hillsboro Oregon!! Just bought our 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner......in Lunar Rock ........Love our 4Runner!!!!
Watching from Wisconsin and thinking about getting a 4Runner TRD pro when I’m older and I’m only a teen
Anyhow, everyone: Live, Love LIFE with TOYOTA!,!,!!,
Watching in Indy. Get the TRD Off Road Premium and then mod it however you want. TRD Pro roof basket is garbage
@@ronevans9277 careful spacers can ruin your truck. Especially if you do some higher level intro off-roading. They are really just cosmetic.
At that rate just get the SR5 Premium and mod it up! Also hello fellow Indy person!
@@samh4532 no kdss, crawl control, mts or locker on the sr5. Its apples and oranges. Modding the off-road is the best option. The sr5 is the mall queen version of 4 runner
@@michaeldbhawker3556 You're absolutely right that it doesn't come with those options, but that doesn't mean you can't retrofit. There are really good pieces on the T4R forum about overcoming all of these. If it can be done to a 4Runner someone on that page has done it and will tell you how to do it.
In SoCal. Ordered a Premium. Console safe is available. Sliding cargo deck is not available with KDSS. You didn’t mention the differences between the climate control (manual on Premium) and headlights (not automatic on Premium).
I live in Raleigh NC, just got a silver TRD ORP at Fredanderson Last week.
Awesome congrats that’s where I work!!
Glad I came across your review while in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Got the TRD off road premium on radar, waiting for a good tone and will be sending it.
Seattle. Great job walking through the two models. Would definitely go with the trd premium...and did, lol
Hello Toyota Jeff. Thank you very much for everything you do for the videoclip. It’s very nice of you. Thank again Jeff.
Thanks for the video, this is something I’ve been struggling with (deciding between the two), from Kodiak Island, Alaska. Helped me decide, I’d go for the ORP, but with the wheel/nitro upgrade! Now I just have to find one & get it shipped up here.
Hello from Tacoma, WA! This video was incredibly helpful in deciding which of these trim levels was best for me!
Awesome glad I could help!!
4runner SR5 owner checking in from New Hampshire
Because of this pandemic, just speaking for Toyota dealership, there is a lengthy wait here in Hawaii for availability of car selections. We test drove the off road 4Runner two days ago. Mind you, there were only two available cars on the lot in the 4Runner category. One off road and one sr5. We test drove the off road. It was amazing! But we needed a day to think about it. We called Toyota the next day to purchase it (yesterday) and it was sold already. Fortunately there is one more coming in next week and put a deposit on it. So I guess it worked out anyway. Ha! Thanks for your video! Very well executed!
Just bought a SR5 premium + TRD exhaust, skid plate, black trd rims but different tires than on the pro, sidestep , all the blackout badged and window tints from factory
44k looks and drives amazing. I opted for the SR5 Becusee I’m not going crazy off-roading and it’s more than enough for our nasty Midwest weather. Also the hood scoops are not functional so no reason to pay more
Watching from Quito, Ecuador 🇪🇨 great videos!!
Watching from Flagstaff, AZ. Thank you for breaking down the trims and differences of the 4Runners.
I’m looking to get one of these last tried and true 4 runners. I have an off-road premium on order but can not wait to see it arrive and start my 4 runner adventures.
I’m a loyal Toyota girl
From Henderson, Nevada.. I love my 2019 TRD Off Road AND my 1993 Land Cruiser…. They are both THE BOMB in my opinion 😎 I added a few goodies to
My YODI, new BF Goodrich All Terrain tires, Fuel rims, lift kit and new suspension, some fun fang lights, a low profile roof rack , light bar and blacked out the emblems….I love how you can personalize these trucks and make them stand out in your own unique way!👍
Thank you for the great comparison, after watching your video I went with the off road premium. I’m in the Pennsylvania mountains
2022 TRD off-road premium. Watching from Florida. Drove up to Ohio to purchase and drove it back here.
Washington state. Considering a 4Runner.
From Canada, thinking of buying one. Checking out all the 4Runner videos.
Watching from New York and I’m looking at both of these SUV’s so thank you for making this video.
Colorado. Still driving a 1998 4Runner that I purchased new. Waiting for a redesign/update of the 4Runner to “upgrade.” When it’s time, hope I can find a dealer like you out here. Thanks for your videos.
Watching from Big Bend Texas area.....love 4Runners
