Hi. So, I just bought the 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD PRO in Lunar Rock color...lol. Anyway, we just experienced our first snow in the Mountains. Our drive way is very steep...Should I have used 4Lo Crawl to go down? Going up, I got stuck like Carlina but now I know not to stop..lol I’ve never driven in snow ❄️ but need to learn. No need to stop/neutral for 4High, only 4Low. You can shift in and out of 4H while moving. Also, you didn’t note that the rear seat passengers can decline their seats.
Where you finally stopped was the spot that you should have engaged the crawl control. I have a trd off road. In order to tow my boat off the beach sand I use crawl control. It is the only way I will get it off. I had people try without using it with no success. Momentum helps when you can get it, but from a standing stop crawl control is better than human control.
I drove a 2017 wrangler 4roor Sahara. I was in that same situation. I didn’t need to air down. Snow was at least 8 inches. I put the jeep in 4Lo. And plowed through. If it got stuck I reversed a few feet and drove forward. The trail I was in was undriven compact snow as well. You didn’t try hard enough 😂

Whoohoo 20hp more. But, how’s the Highlander in deep snow, uphill towing? My experience, 4wd handles better than AWD unless it’s an Audi, and torque is more important than HP in a truck or suv
In 2020 you want to stop and shift into N for 4 HIGH??? There is no way Toyotas 4WD is that behind the times. For 4LOW yes, but it should be a shift on the fly thing for 4HIGH. Can someone please confirm?
The only thing (i can respect and understand why) is that, when you guys get stuck slipping or sliding, you go to "lets go as slow as possible and see if that will fix it" and most of the time, that will get you out of trouble. But i think at the end, instead of just backing down the mountain, you should have backed down a few feet to where you had grip, turned off TCS and just hammered down and see if it would get through that rough section.

Nice vid...currently have a 2018 trd pro truck....once I ditched the stock tires and went with michelins....the thing was unstoppable. Thinking about an upgrade to a 4runner....need the room.
The locker does not improve all that much on snow the ATrac and Crawl Control are better features to use than the locker. I have first hand experience in a 2020 4Runner Venture.
@@lam62sw I was under the impression that under 5mph and in 4lo you can use the rear locker and ATRAC at the same time. The locker will fix your rear wheels and ATRAC will apply brake force to which ever front wheel needs it.
Because they did actually do some updates in 2020 like improved safety tech, updated infotainment, and push button start/keyless entry on some models. Resale value is also spectacular, meaning you won't save much buying a late model used version if you have a higher interest rate (which is common in new vs used financing). Carvana literally has a 2018 TRD Off Road model right now and they are charging $150 MORE than the original window sticker price.
Was the locker engaged? Also recommend the TRD Offroad for most people. It has optional Kdss for better on/Offroad performance, as long as the vehicle maintains stock height. TRD Offroad does have the factory rear locker.
KDSS equipped vehicles can be lifted a few inches (3 I believe) without any major modifications. My TRD Offroad/Trail is lifted 1.75 and zero issues with KDSS. But I also agree with you. I think the TRD off road is the way to go. TRD Offroad with no kdss can be upgraded to an even better suspension than the TRD Pro, and for much less.
Try it again with studded tires and lock the rear diff. Also, slow down when it gets rough! Tires are the only thing that create contact traction. Clearance is great but you can plow through snow with a FWD car on studded winter tires and a slow rate of speed. You might turn your front clip into a snow plow but it will work. You can have a car with all lockers, a center diff lock, be on street tires (G63 AMG) and not make it that far. Contact contact contact.
The only thing to make this beast even better.....a true 6 speed manual. cmon the tacoma gets a 6 speed, give the 4 runner one! (i know, the market isnt there, theyre not gonna waste the time or money)
This is the type of people we haul back to town after we find their cars left abandoned sideways in the middle of the trail, and we have to pull their vehicle off the road to get by them. And then we find them freezing to death and often crying as they wave their arms frantically to be picked up a mile or so later.
Wow just stumbled on this video I’ve been working off that road helping build cell towers. I’ve been driving my F-550 service truck up that road for years.
Nice video. Glad Karleena got a chance to drive! Did you ever test how the Subaru Forester XMode does in these same conditions deep snow? AWD vs 4WD? Would it have made any difference using winter/snow tires/chains?
They did one with the Subaru Forester with Dual X-Mode in snow and towed a Mazda CX-9 in the snow with the Forester, but was not this same road, I don't think.
That was an EXCELLENT demonstration of the effectiveness of airing down the tires. And completely by accident, too. I think that moment should be highlighted. Good Work!

Even a TRD pro 4 Runner has it's limits.
Especially with this Idiot behind the Wheel ...
I did not think airing down the tires would make that much difference. Wow
God how I wish I could afford Trd Pro and that they were available in the EU, only hope is to win the lottery and move to the US, wish me luck
Engage the locker....use the tools that are available to you!
Good review, thanks. convinced me to buy a used one. Why buy 2008 tech on a 1996 powertrain in 2020?
Carlina is gorgeous!!!
Good to see Karleena again. She's awesome and I love her. LOL
Gorgeous, I wish I could afford it...
The 4 Runner is cool too.
My FJ enjoys the real 6speed.
@@RioGood I've always wanted an FJ cruiser. One with a 6 speed would be a dream. 😍
It would be good to see the Ford Bronco go thru that same trail
Love the 4Runner!
I want one but these are going for gold! Even for a used TRD pro with 60k miles they are still going around 50k
This is the type of people we haul back to town after we find their cars left abandoned sideways in the middle of the trail, and we have to pull their vehicle off the road to get by them. And then we find them freezing to death and often crying as they wave their arms frantically to be picked up a mile or so later.
What a beautiful co-pilot you have 😛
Yeah, that Ryan sure is a cutie!
@@dp9324 you should write him and ask to go for a ride.
@@bartcanuck734 Ha! :-)
Found your channel a few weeks back and have subscribed 👍🏻 great content 👌🏻
Wow just stumbled on this video I’ve been working off that road helping build cell towers. I’ve been driving my F-550 service truck up that road for years.
The crawl control is awesome
Karleena is awesome driver
toyota el numero uno no ay otro .. yo siempre e usado toyota the best the one and only ii
You can shift to 4x4 on the fly. You don't need to stop or put in neutral. FYI
I think all four by fours are pretty much like that these days
@@hellraiserx9490 they are. That's why I thought it was funny he thought he had to stop and put in neutral just to go to 4Hi
it seems its not electronic. it has lever. therefore rules apply. stop go neutral first
Johnny B That really sucks!
Jorel Davis To go into low, you do.
