I held off for a while buying a 5th gen, but with it being fairly obvious Toyota is releasing the 6th gen for 2025 and that they'll almost undoubtedly be throwing a 4cyl hybrid into it, I decided to pull the trigger on a 2024 TRD ORP. I absolutely love it so far.

@@lucasfu580 not necessarily. Just because it's new and modern doesn't make it much better than the old and what works. The sequoia may have better fuel economy, better tech, and more luxury features, but it doesn't have a roll down rear window anymore, has significantly less space both cargo and passenger wise, and doesn't have a v8 either (which is still what people still want).

With all the bells and whistles on the Toyota TRD Offfroads, I use 4Lo + locker as needed, most often. It's simple, no hunting around for dials and buttons, and I can just drive. It get's me through everything all the other settings can with less fiddling. The tec is neat, but 4lo and locked is about all you need.

The 4runner is probably the best do it all SUV out there right now. It's not the best off-road, with some Wrangler and Bronco trims beating its capabilities off the lot, and it's not the best hauler - the big 3 row SUVs with higher payloads and tow ratings beat it there. However it is VERY good off-road. You can fit A-LOT of stuff in it, especially when you take advantage of the tons of roof storage options for it. It can also tow a decent amount for the vehicle size/class - if you're not in a hurry. It's also the same length as a Subaru Outback just to give an idea on how easy it is to drive and park in the city and suburbs. All of that AND it's probably the most reliable vehicle currently in production - it's no wonder Toyota is stretching this generation as long as they can.

Argueably the most capable off-roady SUV that is still in production. There’s no match in the modern market to Toyota 4Runner in terms of off-road capabilities and reliability all the same time. Some may argue that Jeep Wrangler can come close to it but they always tend to forget that Wrangler may take you to the off-road course but there are not guarantees that it will bring you back home. With Toyota 4Runner though you’re always guaranteed to come home on time. Great review!!

I own the 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the next generation. It lacks power(peddle commander helps) simple things like a power lift gate, rain sensing windshield wipers and the rear wiper is not good. I do not like the exhaust sound that is unique to the TRD Pro. Gas mileage is my biggest complaint. With all of that said I still love the vehicle. Its off-road chops are fantastic. I have 2 dogs and they love the roll down rear windshield. I wish mine had come with the rollout rear tray so the entire surface would have been flat when the seats were folded down. I purchased the Luno mattress($300) thinking they would have compensated for the dip down aft of the rear seat but they did not. Don’t waste your money on the Luno mattress unless you have that pullout tray. Finally the roof rack is kinda useless. Most well equipped versions remove this POS rack. I stopped plans to build this unit into a proper overlander in favor of waiting to see how the Land Cruiser is and of course what the next gen changes.

rear locker can also make the lateral slide happen out back if your off camber. good test. but it's a mistake to lock the rear, just use the rock mode and it's capabilities won't be hindered by the rear shifting on you.

Interesting. I think my TRD OR with the KDSS and KO2's would have just walked it w/out all that trail reconfiguration and multitude of line checks. I get it tho, not your rig, so have to be especially delicate. And you are judging the course for even less capable rigs. And with that in mind, I think it is going to be too much for anything you want to just drive through with.

I have a 2024 off-road premium with KDSS and rock rails, wild peak tires and Uptop roof rack that is much better than the Pro rack. In the future adding Fox shocks with a minor lift of about 2 inches. I feel these additions will definitely outperform a Pro for about same money.
Wish you would do the Test course with a 2024 4Runner with KDSS. Also upgrading the tires but not absolutely necessary. The KDSS will give you more articulation.

Toyota never puts KDSS trims into the press fleet. We should get a Lexus GX 550 to test in the next couple months, and that one might have eKDSS.

Having owned a '16 Trail with KDSS and now a '23 Pro, off the showroom floor, I prefer the Pro. The Fox suspension is really well sorted. The KDSS really shined on backroads thanks to the fat swaybars, but I felt like it definitely gave up on-road and off-road ride quality to the Fox suspension.

This is a deceiving answer. When you order a vehicle from Toyota you can’t do a factory order. Toyota dealers do not have any input on what they order. Toyota Motor Sales decides what is shipped to the dealers. The dealers are on an allocation system. The dealer doesn’t know what they are getting until it ships from Japan.
Recently bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner. All the Toyota dealers I dealt with confirmed they have no input and customer requests are not considered. Needless to say dealers are not happy with this Toyota Motor Sales policy.
When I recently bought my 4Runner that I wanted with almost no options I didn’t want, I flew a thousand miles to pick it up. I saw it on the dealer website and it had recently shipped from Japan. Put a down payment right away and picked it up about 3 weeks later.

I’m really hoping that the sixth generation 4Runner has a straight axle upfront instead of independent front suspension. I have a jeep wrangler Rubicon unlimited and it is absolutely superior off-road. It would be nice to have a secondary vehicle if the 4Runner did go to a straight axle upfront.

I finally got to sit in it at the Silicon Valley Auto Show. It still looks so nice and inside its rugged but is a little dated. And the rear seats do not lay flat which is a big miss on these trucks whom can take you into amazing places, but you can't stretch out in it.
