UPDATE: Toyota has confirmed to us that the US-spec 2024 Land Cruiser does NOT have Off-Road Trail Turn assist. Based on our inquiry they are going to remove the feature from all product sheets (it’s currently listed as a feature on their website.)

I actually like this trim, as I'm not into all of the extra crap that they put in new vehicles. That's why I drive a Tacoma SR5 4x4. With that said, the price is insane. If I'm buying the base trim, I want the price to reflect that. This is $40k to $45k vehicle tops.

40-45K Is just an arbritrary number you made up. Go test drive the car and tell me its a 40k car. That's what Rav4's sell for.

I will add that my fave repair shop guy said to me " buy a Toyota, never see me again" and he is correct. Great reliability.
We shall see. The Tacoma and tundra are dead last for reliability in their classes
Some points as an owner of 2007 Land Cruiser Prado.
1. Every motorized function is prone to failure. My seat adjustments work reliably. My manual tail gate works reliably (mine opens sideways and is holding the spare wheel). If they were motorized, I'd expect at least 2 replacements by now.
2. Fabric seats last much longer compared to leather seats + make much more sense in hot climates.
3. To make plastics feel good, OEMs tend to add layers of velvety synthetic materials that degrade over time, especially in hot climates. Simple plastics = durable plastics.
I concur. It is a pity the side-opening tailgate is gone as is the option to mount a spare on it.
too bad this costs as much as a GX470 that came loaded with better features and higher reliability with a proven platform. This is just a rebadged 4runner with the LC nameplate stamped on. It's very sad to see as a FJ80, 22re and tacoma owner. Toyota has lost their touch
@Calembo, I don't think your assumptions are correct. The GX470 is a rebranded Toyota Land Cruiser Prado for the US market.
This Land Cruiser is a direct successor of the Prado 150, not of the 4runner.
@@nomad27 you might be correct actually. At first I thought the same as you but all of this marketing of the Landcruiser and the 6th gen 4Runner alongside the Gx550 using the same dimensions and chassis kind of made me think otherwise.

The starting price for LC250 in Japan is less than 40K USD. Nobody mentions that JPY has dropped 40%+ value against USD while this vehicle is Made in Japan.
BTW, the hitch diaper really needs more work. It’s inconvenient to open and close, and your review shows it also affects leaving angle.

The GX isn't worth what they want for them either, so there's that problem.....but people love to overpay for vehicles so here we are.

Man, Toyota going crazy with the base trim LC price. 56K? I would’ve expected the price at high 40k. I’m better off buying the current 4Runner pro for mid 50K price.
Even at $40k it’s expensive for what this is. My 02 Taco top trim was $24k new and this is almost the same vehicle. I would pay $35k for something like this.
4Runner pro is still part time 4wd I believe
To get the exact setup as this (full time 4wd + i-force max setup), you'd have to go for either the option on the Limited i-force max or the platinum trim which would probably put it on parity in price (or even higher due to the hype of it being a '4Runner' to the general public and getting markups)
Just get a Passport for 40k new. Full time AWD and comfortable. Lots of room too. A few of my friends have them and love them.

It's mind blowing how just 4-5 years ago $60k was the price for a high end, nicely optioned BMW or Range Rover. Now $60k is base model prices for toyotas. Great video as always
No it’s not. This was true 20 years ago. Not 4-5 years ago. Back in 2012 when the L405 generation Range Rover debuted it had a base price of 84K.

They have way too many high-priced, overlapping SUV's between Toyota and Lexus lineups.
While true I don't think anyone would complain about having more choices would they? I'm sure they'd rather you compare a 4Runner to the Land Cruiser which would have them end up buying a Toyota product in the end anyways vs another brand; there'd seem to be an SUV / crossover for any use case now

Agree. It's a bit weird from my point of view. I'm thinking of my self as a consumer going into the dealership, "All SUVs are basically the same, they're all the same price, they get all the similar MPG. Why?"

Ryan, We asked for the Prado and gosh darn it, Toyota sent it to us. For those who have reached a certain stature, the extra headroom (compared to to he 4Runner) will be appreciated.
Many of us are still holding out hope the smaller, more affordable Land Cruiser FJ will meet US and Canadian standards. 🤞🤞
tecnically, this has the most headroom in toyota's lineup, even slightly more than the grand highlander and tundra and fj cruiser

@@MaddNomad1015 People just like to rant. This model is only 3 inches shorter than the 300 Series and built on the same wheelbase. The only useful feature offered on some 300 models which we miss on our Prado is the locking front differential. I will say that Toyota created a rod for their own backs with the cheap door trim on the 1958. They cannot be saving more than $100 per unit with this silly cost cutting. Toyota was only selling 2,000 of the 'full-size' Land Cruisers annually prior to its discontinuation. The same people who complain about this one complained that the 200 Series was too expensive.
@@rightlanehog3151 Well that front locker and the gr sport version. The LC 300 series GR sport makes anybody scared, although the tundra trd pro grill looks very menacing too, but not for the same reason
Watching this video made me glad I bought my 2023 4Runner.
I don't see why someone would choose this over the new 2025 4Runner which is essentially the same vehicle underneath with a lot more options available at a lower price point. Great review as always! I love the off road tests
Price isn’t yet announced for 4Runner. I’m guessing that the trims with this powertrain will cost a similar amount.
Some reviews have described the 4runner's cabin as a bit more claustrophobic compared to the Land Cruiser, which has better headroom and roominess
Land Cruiser is always full-time 4WD. 4Runner in most trims is 2WD until you activate 4WD High or Low.
They are going to ask for $75k for the 4runner too. All the manufacturers got together at a table, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Lexus and said, "We can all raise our price per feature together and profit," then they all nodded, forged golden rings, and committed.

As always thanks Ryan. I worked a project in Egypt from 1989 till 1992. I loved my company vehicle a 1989 LAND CRUISER ! Wow it was good in the desert and in downtown Cairo.
This is nice. People can complain all they want but I like the 70 series philosophy underlying some of the features and interior choices.
People in the US love to complain about the lack of features on Toyota and others. I'm not sure they'll be able to handle the 70 series because of how basic utilitarian it is. Soon they'll want leather seats in them, a bigger table sized screen on the dash etc. They'll forget the main reason why the 70s series exists is to be basic yet rugged and reliable
Really wanted a Toyota. Either this or the new 4 Runner. But finally decided both are overkill for my use AND way WAY overpriced! Wound up buying a ‘24 Outback Wilderness. WAY more bang for the buck and everything I need. Could not be happier.

I'm coming around on the Land Cruiser, but the 1958 cheaps out in too many areas for a $50K+ vehicle.
I really can't wait for you to get your First Edition and put some proper tires on it. I'm very curious what mileage looks like with A/T tires both on and off road.
The Land Cruiser has come a long way since your great review of the 2021 LC HE in the snow. Just not in the right direction! I still go back to the video whenever I want to remember how to use all the options that came with mine!

Awesome! Your review here is more information on things I find helpful to know. Details matter. The on road driver assistance features you did not like, that would be a big selling point for me right now. Just did a recent drive up to Mount Vernon from the Algona area and it was awful. 167 morning commute was about normal. But 405 was a disaster. Wanted so bad to use my adaptive cruise control on my Charger, but alas, things were too slow for even it to adjust too. IF my 2018 4R TRD OR had that feature, it would up the game for me on the longer road trips. Wound up taking I5 all the way back for the return as it has been a better experience. The capabilities of this vehicle and the tech. in it, ALMOST make the hefty price tag and the fact it does not have a V6 option worth considering. Thanks Ryan!

Most vehicles are full of plastic inside and out, so not sure why reviewers talk about plastic at all in their reviews, cars are full of plastic, and have been for decades since people whined about steel dash boards, automakers went to plastic and its been that way ever since.....people want to overpay for vehicles so its no wonder the base price of this vehicle is well over $60k because they know people are dumb enough to pay it just for the Land Cruiser stickers.
@@wildbill23c sure, but this has the same feel as 02 Taco. Yet Toyota is charging $60k for something that should be maximum $40k. Who knows if this will be reliable. This will be a pavement queen for the 90% of people , and for $10k more I am driving MDX type-s.
Last year my Wife and I bought a 23’ Toyota Sequoia TRD Off-Road! We thought we more than overspent at 71.5k…. We got it in “Lunar Rock” with every single offered option, it feels like a steal now…. The sad reality is that it isn’t even something to feel proud of. Toyota needs to do much better with the product they’re putting out to the consumer! The new 4Runner is beyond overpriced along with this Land Cruiser. The 1st things we did were 35’ tires along with a leveling kit and a roof rack! The vehicle is beyond capable when you have the necessary clearance! After seeing the review you did on it last year in that snow, you sold us on it! Love the reviews, it makes a huge difference for us when we’re trying to weigh pro’s/con’s for what we look for! 🤙🏽🙏🏽
Sequoia interior is a huge fail. Bad luggage area that is too high, third row that is unusable, even second row compromised. That Sequioa is really compromised.

Very nice review about a very nice truck. 👍🏾 But the First Edition, with a few selected options, goes close to 100K, in Canadian dollars. It is insane.
Hearing consumers from other markets complain about pricing really puts some things into perspective. For example, here in the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago to be specific which falls under the Latin American market), we pay just over 41k USD for a corolla (non hybrid) from the dealership, not even in comparable full US specification. A Land Cruiser Prado (300) is currently almost 180k USD for comparison.
Less tech is better. That's what makes the land cruiser so rugged and iconic. Its a land cruiser its meant to be basic idk why people complaining about. Now i see alot of American really wanting the 70 series in the states but if it comes to your market you'll have more complaining because of how basic and utilitarian it is, you can't have it all!!!
You are missing an important point. Many people confuse the terms 'comment' and 'complaint' so they feel obliged to whine, weep, whinge and wail in the space below the video. 😉
Right in the target market for this vehicle that Toyota is going after and can comfortably afford this, but have to feel there's value. The 1958 is 10k to 7k overpriced and that's being generous. The interior is appropriate for a basic no frill offroader like those of old but the price is nuts. This is the same price as a Ranger Raptor!!
I test drove a ranger raptor, then a Land Cruiser 1958. Purchased the Cruiser, easy decision. The Ford was 🤮
It looks like Toyota has a winner. I do think all vehicles with the off-road capabilities of this one should come with a front camera.

Really wanted one of these, but the price point killed it. I had a brand new '18 JL Wrangler Unlimited for $30k - nice and simple platform, but the build quality was sketchy at best. Was holding out, hoping the base LC could come in at maybe upper $40s, but... no luck. Surprised myself and wound up going with a '24 Outback Wilderness (they're already throwing in significant discounts and super cheap loans). Have to give up a little bit of terrain, but for about 94% of what I do, it handles it very well, plus way more comfortable and better appointed. Shame, though, I love the design of that new base LC. (The 4Runner never really did anything for me.)
In literally exactly the same boat. I have a '23 OBW and while I love the new LC, the price in comparison is just...silly. Especially once you get away from the base model and start wanting a cabin that is even comparable in quality to the OBW with Softex/Startex, better interior plastics, etc. It's bizarre to be paying $60k (absolute minimum, if you can even find one - and this is before the dealerships get ahold of you) for a base model with dopey all season tires and no roof rails. If this absolute base spec came in closer to $50k I think it would be a home run.
Yeah if you’re not actually going off road (which could describe most 4runner owners) the Outback is a better choice
@@Jeepingshort like I said, it goes to about 94% of the off road spots I took my Wrangler to just fine. Just not great for deep ruts or steep rock climbs... (hard to do a slow, steady crawl with AWD)

Don’t come at me with a bunch of Toyota fan-boy that turbos are so reliable, different than they used to be, it’s the future. Etc. My comment is I want to wait and see how the turbo holds up over time. It’s another failure point. Off-road a blown turbo is a nightmare. Why not let us option just a 4-cylinder naturally aspirated and a hybrid option if we must.
Isn’t the new 4-Runner available naturally aspirated 4 cylinder, like the Tacoma? I’d imagine people who’d want that would go that route.

Most mid-size trucks are turbos now. Only Raptor, Ridgeline and Gladiator have a V6 I think. It’s only a matter of time…
Anything blowing/breaking off road is a pain. The turbo will last much longer than many other parts on this LC

10k more for a gx550 overtrail seems like an absolute no brainer to me, with the only downside being gas mileage. Still love to look at the LC though, itll be excellent at 40k used
I love the Land Cruiser and want one badly, but the trim I want is 65k…which is about the same cost as the base Lexus GX550, which, in my opinion, comes with a more desirable engine and the Lexus service department. If this thing started at 50k, I’d say for a rugged, reliable, bare bones off roader, that’d be a decent deal but at 60k, this is too close in price to the GX.
There's so much product overlap between this, the new 4Runner and the GX. You have to wonder what the Toyota/Lexus marketing departments are thinking.
Unfortunately prices on vehicles keep on rising into what had been the premium and before that, the luxury segment. The use of commoditized lower cost materials has increased or the special quality and innovation decreased. To get the latter, you need to be up at $110K plus, which has become the lower luxury segment. Pretty sad shifts we’ve continued to make.

Hey Ryan, great video as usual. I've been looking forward to you getting your hands on a Land Cruiser for a while, so glad to see you could get ahold of one. I'm curious, do you know how large of tires it can (sanely) fit? It seems like tires are probably the main upgrade here, given the solid axle and slightly lower ground clearance. Do you know if the higher trims come with better performing tires?
Also, I know we're heading into summer now, but I'm also really looking forward to you testing one of these in winter. I drive an Outback Wilderness now (partially based on your testing and comparison videos!), and while I don't do a ton of off-roading, I do live in a very snowy climate, and it has been an absolute tank in the snow and on farm roads. That said, if I'm honest, the Land Cruiser may have stolen my heart, so I'm really curious about the snow performance. Thanks again for the video!
Sweet rig. Would love to have one. Even this rental car trim level. But once again, I’m in the wrong tax bracket. For years I was a truck/suv guy, but recently on a whim I changed my enthusiasm to cars. And it’s a good thing because I can’t afford most of the new trucks/suvs that are being released now anyway. Even some of the rent-a-wreck trims are outrageous now. Traded my 14 Silverado Rally Edition for a 22 Crosstrek Limited and I love it. But in the next year or so I’m planning on either a WRX TS or a GR Corolla. Both of which fully specd ( I’m making assumptions about the TS because it was just announced) go for basically the entry level price of most trucks and suvs now.

I didn’t think I’d want this until I saw it in person. Boy was I wrong. I look the styling. It’s larger than it appears on video too.
The local dealer with lower markups has 7K USD tacked on to the 1958 on the lot. The larger dealer in town, notorious for markups, just sold a first edition with a 12K markup. and has listed inbound Land Cruiser trims marked up 8K USD. Don't pay markup, MSRP is high enough.
Toyota is in a strange place... They may be letting their popularity and sales get to their heads and make them think they can price however they want release overlapping models.

this is perfect for overlanding no frills no BS and i like no fancy plastics when your rig will covered in dirt and dust anyways but i just need to wait for the reliability part of the new engine before i can truly pull the trigger on this

Could someone kindly explain to me what a 'locking center differential' does and how that compares with a vehicle that doesnt or does have a 'locking front differential'. In some explanations I've seen it seems like its no difference between front and center...yet the G wagon has all 3.

Awesome video! I think the real test will need to be conducted on your main test course but it already looks pretty capable.
However, I don’t think it’ll be greatly successful at least in Europe. With climate taxes it’s really close to Bronco and Defender in price. The former is more capable off-road and the latter is more comfortable and luxurious.
Also the seats look very basic. I’m super curious what you’re going to say after a long journey whether bolstering was fine.
they already sell the old Landcruisers (Prado version and 300 in EU)...the new Prado version is heading there also, and will have a 2.8 liter turbodiesel similar to the current model.
I'll stick with my 22 4runner TRD Offroad Premium. Doesn't make sense to pay that much just to say "I have a Land Cruiser". That trim level with that interior should be 40k max.
Something about Toyotas pricing for all their new lineup is just wild… “hey how can we overprice our vehicles while not adding basic features?”
Because Toyota figure people will buy anything with a Toyota badge and legendary name on it. IMO, most of Toyota vehicles are overpriced.

All MPG ratings should be based on hill country driving or 70-85 mph flat freeway driving. Anything youbcan get over that is a bonus, but it shows real world requirements for many at highways speed. Slow speed is typically becuase of hills, high speed when flat.
The Subaru Outback & Forrester Wilderness has more ground Clearance @ A little over 9in. And a more plush interior.for a lot cheaper price.

For the people complaining about the price, remember 2 things, 60k today was 50k right when covid hit, also the last land cruiser was 90k about 5 years ago(I know, “the real land cruiser”)… Buy I do believe that toyota is getting out of control with the price tags.
The LX has an off road option pack in Japan with a front locker and the GR 300 series has a front as well. So they could do it

Clearly has great off road capabilities which I would expect, and personally I don’t mind the plastic/cloth interior and manual adjust seats. After all it does have its roots in overlanding and I don’t really focus too much on luxury in that arena. But the price is just too much. I could stomach this at 40k with the top trim at 50k or 55k max or something like that. Yes this is more capable than my 23 Outback Onyx XT but it had better be - it’s a Land Cruiser. But for the price, it isn’t that much more capable, and with less economy and fewer features. Cool rig but these manufacturers need to come down to earth with the prices across the board.

I'm glad people are calling out the material quality. Too often we get apologists for automakers, even more so when it comes to off-roaders, when it comes to the terrible quality you get for the price they are charging. Just because it's meant to be rugged doesn't mean it can't be and feel nice.
Ryan could you take 22 or 23 GX460 without MTS for exactly the same test drive just to compare ? Are they on par with each other or either one have any differences in taking obstacles.
It would be great to have the option to "downgrade" to the cloth seats of the 1958 to the standard LC with the square lights. I guess the best option to not have leather (faux or not) on the standard LC is put on cheap seat covers. lol
I love how people keep saying this car is priced too high when the market has shown it will gladly pay these prices.
It seems like a really cool vehicle but I think you’re paying a lot for the LC badge. I don’t get why you’d buy this model vs the 4Runner.

Most reviews that have been in both have said everything in the LC feels more premium and solid, even on the base trim. Less flexible materials and squeaky points.
By the time you get the hybrid powertrain in 4-Runner I bet you are very close to this in price.
I’ve been following you for a while now. One thing I noticed that you don’t have is a HPF on your audio recording. I highly recommend that as the road noise and driving audio recording has a lot of low rumbling that is really annoying to hear when you have an audio system with subwoofers.
Fair point. The decision on that was to not artificially “sound deaden” the vehicles we test. If you have an accurate sound system it shouldn’t be too boom-y. Though I do understand not everyone wants to adjust their systems just for our reviews. We need to come up with a consistent process that works for all vehicles.
It’s funny how you assume I don’t have “accurate sound system” as it’s microphone calibrated and is worth more than the vehicle in this video. The issue is more “consumer grade” sound systems can’t replicate sound frequencies below 40hz and usually “artificially taper” is off lower frequencies due to speakers limitation and amplifier. Regardless I don’t have this issue with any “professional” production video or audio. You’re not the only vehicle review that I watch, only one of many. I’m just trying to help you evaluate your production of your videos. You might want to ask an audio engineer first before bashing someone advice.
@@tonydang2067I assume… because a lot of people that have gaming system speakers with accentuated bass. It’s not a personal judgement, just what I saw from a decade in the PC business.
I don’t care that it has plastic interior, but what I do care about is that it costs $55k+ for one. No vehicle over $50k should ever have plastic materials as its main panels. There should really just be one interior. All the off-road goodies should be options and the main reasons to spend more $$.
Suzuki Jimny 4 door all grip does all these things with ease with a 1.5 L engine priced at 17000 USD

I feel like a lot is missing at this price point. Yes, I understand it’s a Land Cruiser (I currently own a 100 Series) and there’s a certain cache that comes from the name, but a loaded 4Runner feels like the better option here.

okay. looks first. at first I though it was so bland, flat, no lines... blah looking. stared at some more. eyebrows went up and I liked it. I travel to outdoor activities and like to stretch out in the back and need that flat floor so this is a deal breaker. surprised they couldn't do what they did with the rav4 where the batteries are.
your uphill is like what i do with my rc's. its cool to see the similarities of the articulation and a bump to go uphill.
I get paying for the name, but $60k for all plastic and cloth seats?!...then you gotta think, taxes, warranties, then interest on top of all that.
These are the prices that people are paying for vehicles, so automakers are gonna keep gouging as long as people are dumb enough to keep overpaying.
I really like it , it has that JDM imported Prado feeling , but I don’t know, the I force v6 engines are not doing well , would the I force 4 cylinders be the same

Like all new vehicles, way to expensive. The economy is in the toilet and companies still just sitting their being greedy. Sad cause people are really struggling right now. All vehicles need to go back to reasonable pricing. Make things simple and keep it cheaper. What that means is less profits for the company, I get that but people just can’t afford what they need these days. On a side note, love your channel, you are one of the best to watch. Appreciate you always being so thorough on your vehicle testing. Great job and keep it up!
While true, isn't it the buyer the one with the agency here? Not to justify the prices here but the folks struggling should look at other options like the used market; nobody is forcing them to purchase new obviously
A lot of high tech features, are mandated, such as rear view camera. Infotainment is now all in LCDs which means lots of software development. People want compatibility with cell phones amend ability to get navigation projection or natively. Then there is blind side monitoring, front and rear pedestrian alerts and Nannie’s, and rear sonar. You are not going back to your dad’s era tech.
Isnt the torsen diff something we've had in the 4runners since the 4th gen? Which is about 20 years now? Didnt late model 3rd gens also have a version of it? Or am I getting thay wrong? I currently sit in a 08 4runner and will eventually be in the market but nothing really seems to be leagues better or a real upgrade. This drive train might be worth it due to mpgs
Only in the 4Runner Limited. All the other models (TRD, etc.) are part-time 4WD with a transfer case.
The legend returns.. this is no longer a legend, the old school solid axle Land Cruiser is definitely a legend, this is a very nice crossover for sure, but I don’t think this could out wheel my 2015 Silverado with a 2” lift on 33” tires.. this would be expensive to be off road worthy $$ this needs a minimum of a 285-70-17” tire to start and way more suspension travel.
