When I transitioned to unprocessed vegan, for the first week I ate as much fruit, veggies, potato/sweet potato, steamed brown rice, and beans as I wanted until the cravings for processed food left. I ate cherry tomatoes, carrot and cucumber slices all day long. I ate no oil, no added sugar, no processed foods. By week 2 the cravings went away!
I really appreciate Dr. Rahman! Please thank her for us for sharing her wealth of knowledge despite her busy schedule. She has a calm and positive way of communication like Dr. Barnard. And Chuck, you are one of the best interviewers/reporters. You always ask the questions in my head.
Re cravings- I told myself to give it (no junk food) 4 weeks then reevaluate how I felt. Having an end in sight (either to the craving or to the denial) seemed to help me. I did the same with smoking - when I decided to really quit, I told myself that I could start again when I turned 70. Haven't smoked for 15 years, turning 70 in a few months and certainly don't want a cigarette!

If you really want to reset your palate, you could do a 3 (ideally 5) day water-only fast. Only drinking filtered/clean water for 3-5 days. Really helps the battle with processed cravings by making natural foods taste much better I have two allowances: peanut butter and whole grain pasta
We are 2nd week in for WFPB, already my blood sugars are down...yay!!! My goal is to lose 100 lbs, and thanks to Dr. Neal Barnard, in time I will realize it. I loved cheese, and thought it would be so hard to give up, to my surprise, I do not miss it at all. We went cold turkey on all dairy and meats. We gave all our cheeses away to our friends who love them and do not want to change. I found that we could adapt all recipes by vastly reducing oils and meats, replacing them with seitan or soy when needed, otherwise just WFPB. Thank you for your tutorials.

What about a feeling of hunger that has nothing to do with the stomach? I tried cutting out nuts and oil in cooking but it leaves me feeling unsatisfied, despite having a full stomach. And I feel a bit off, too, like I don't have as much energy. I am suspecting people eat because of different hunger cues. I can deal with not having a full stomach, in fact I don't like that sensation at all, of feeling stuffed. I can't deal with having no energy and being cranky that I get when I am genuinely hungry.
Let’s be real about weight gain after losing weight. I’ve done it myself so many times and the weight doesn’t come back because I’ve continued healthy eating! It comes back because cheat meals turn into multiple consecutive days and weeks of cheating where healthy food goes out the window!
When I was 15 (and lost 50 pounds, permanently) I used to look at food that I craved and ask myself what do I really want: the taste of the food in my mouth, or the feeling of having it in my stomach after eating it? Sometimes I would just taste a tiny bit and then walk away, thinking about how the flavor "felt" in my mouth. I reminded myself that the feeling of having eaten it was not very good, but the act of tasting it was. Over time my craving turned to fruits and simpler foods.
I have started the whole food plant based plan. Watch the documentary Plant Pure they explain it in detail. No added oils and sugars. I started this and feel very healthy! I eat like a pig on healthy food and have lost 6 pounds not done with second week.
I found that if my plate is half veggies and half starches (potatoes, corn. rice and beans) makes me feel more satisfied than eating all veggies. Starches are complex carbohydrates that are carbs that don't spike your glucose levels, and don't make you hungry again soon after.
Very interesting video. Personally, I switched from a low carb, heavy protein diet (on which I lost 25lbs) to plant based. So far on a week of plant based, I've gained 3lbs - WHILE still measuring my calories carefully and sticking to my 1,800 calorie goal. A little perplexed, I'm hoping that's temporary. Before anyone asks - I've only eaten sweet potato, beans, greens, fruit, and tofu. I limit my fat to 30g a day or less.
Your metabolic rate and activity level might actually be burning less calories than 1800 per day. Another thing to keep in mind is that it takes time for the microbiome to adapt. Some kinds of gut bacteria can actually make weight loss more difficult.
I have 120 lbs I need to lose. I have also had a stroke and two heart attacks within the last 10 months. I am never hungry if I wait to eat when I'm hungry it's like a day and a half before I get hungry should I only eat when I'm hungry on a plant-based diet or should I eat three times a day? Should I watch my calories should I not watch my Cal like I said I need to lose 120 lb. I am 5 ft 6 and way 266 lb I should weigh about 140 lb
Why is counting Calories considered some exhausting obstacle? It is as simple as having a portion plan to meet daily. You don't need to count every day if you have a portion plan. i.e. 1/2 cup (dry wt) oats, buckwheat, rice 1/2 cup blueberries or other fruit 1/2 cup soy milk or other non dairy 2 tspn ground flax or chia seed 280 Cals 2 cups mixed salad ingredients 2 cups leafy greens 1/2 medium fruit 1/2 cup legumes 1/2 cup grains 340Cals 1 fruit 80 Cals 1 cups legume and grain casserole 2 cups vegetables 250 Cals 1/2 fruit 40 ~1000 Calories No counting involved.

It should be fine (as long as no oil added -- light salt should be fine), but I recommend not snacking in general. If you look into Dr. Alan Goldhammer and Dr. Fuhrman, you'll learn about fasting and "true" hunger If your goal is to trim off fat, limit the amount of fat you consume and eat for a smaller window early in the day. Like 7am-3pm or shorter. I do 7am-12pm every day and don't eat at all Saturday Light exercise + muscle building will also be huge for losing fat
Ok for what? If you’re trying to lose weight, no. Air popped popcorn is very calorically dense at 1,800 calories per pound! Eat more food during your meal times to minimize snacking but if you must...eat fruit instead.
If you only eat 1 cup. I can gain weight on it unless I control it strictly. Too fun for me to eat. My between meal snacks are hot green tea, carrot slices, cucumber, cherry tomatoes. I eat 1/4 cup of each plus 1 apple and 1 other fruit.

Hi Blanche. Are you off all gluten I hope? There is a tie between gluten and Hashimoto’s. Also, I’m taking herbs like ashwagandha, selenium, zinc, guggul, iodine, etc. and I think it’s helping my thyroid.
Are you eating oil, coconut, nuts or hummus? Do you eat a lot of bread and cereal? Do you drink juice? These are foods that are higher in calorie density that can be healthy but are not good for weight loss and its best to eat less of it. These are usually common culprits.
@@SunflowerVegan no hummus, no bread, no cereal, no juice, sometimes a few walnuts. I don’t eat much. count calories and still cant lose weight. Something is nit right.

What is your activity level everyday? High protein, medium to low carbs and medium to low fat will help to gain muscle IF you strength training, more muscle = more calories spent at rest.
Respectfully, I disagree. It’s very easy to overeat plant based. Dates and nuts are very small and high in calories, just 3 dates is close to 300 calories. Hummus generally has oil in it which is also high in calories. People also neglect to include the oil they use for cooking into their calorie count. Whilst the most important thing is getting someone off a processed diet, ultimately there will come a stage where it’s important for them to count calories
Being aware of which foods are higher in calorie density is the first step. You are right you can eat healthy but eat too many calories... so instead of eating hummus from the store.. eat your own without oil.. or just have 1 serving per day. Eating more low calorie dense foods and pairing it with low amounts of the higher calorie dense foods is the way to go.
