You know what I love the most about this sport…when it comes to having to use an emergency goalie, the commentators and fans are actually reasonable. They don’t get upset with the goalie, they don’t boo and hiss. They understand that it was a person who was not prepared to come into this game but is stepping up to make sure the game goes on. It’s honestly kinda nice to see rational people in public 😂
Hockey is full of respect. This is just one example. Look at most fights in the game. They guys will pat each other on the ass and say "good scrap". They won't hit someone who's on the ice...they call for a trainer during an injury....and so on
I was an emergency goalie for a local pro senior A team. Didn't get to play, but sat on the bench. Super cool experience. Can't imagine doing that for the NHL.
i would shit every color in a rainbow right into my pants sitting on that bench knowing at any moment i could be put in net as the other goalie gets injured.
Great vid. All the stories are good. But the first one, David Ayres, will still go down as legendary. Each home team has an emergency goalie at every home game, just in case. This 42 year old, hadn't played any hockey for 15 years, gets called up to take over in the middle of an NHL game, played the last 28 minutes of the game, saved 8 out of 10 shots, and helped the Canes win the game! There isn't a major sport where something like this (a non-roster true amateur playing a professional game) can happen.
I played goalie all my life and always dreamed about this. One day, it almost came true. I was living in Prescott, AZ playing in the men's league and was told I was going to be a backup for the Arizona Sundogs minor team to the Coyotes. Unfortunately, I didn't get the play, but the excitement of that day is still with me many years later. It would have been my first pro game.
I was an emergency goalie for one of our local ice games. Nowhere near the level of the NHL, but still. My team had two goalies, me and my friend. We switched at half time so I was on the bench watching the second half of the game. About 5 minutes after I got off the ice the opponents only goalie got hurt. So I hopped back on and played for the other team. It was fun getting shot at by my own team and chatting with the other team. The amount of thank you’s and kind words I was given was so overwhelming and awesome. The whole rest of the game I was talking to the other team, having a blast with them. My team won the game but the entire opposing team still crowded me and were still happy even though they lost. After I got off the ice I was met by parents from the other team and parents of kids on my team all commending me for being backup. It was a hell of a night and I’m so glad it happened. I couldn’t even imagine the experience if it was in the NHL, but damn it would feel nice.
He got to play with the best player in the world and a bunch of other greats. I love the pure joy in all of the oilers faces. They're all stoked for him.
I love when the ebugs start playing the commentators are not only pumping them up but also complementing them and overall being good human beings because they understand that the dude in the net probably was not prepared to play in a fucking nhl game that day.
6:05 "He's almost certainly better than anyone YOU know." Wow, that was very aggressive. I'm not sure I deserved that level of disdain but okay mr. narrator man. 🤣
LOL this is the third time i have watched this - so cool - wish it was me... "Living the Dream" never gets old... Love that the crowd accepts the "situation bc 'the game' gos on and can't blame the guy for doing his best when his best is what is required - RESPECT!
Matt Berlin technically wasn’t the EBUG. He signed a minor league tryout contract and was actually just the backup that night. The oilers called on another guy to be the EBUG that night since skinner was sick.
@@sambmackenzie you saved me asking why he got put in if there was nothing wrong with the starting netminder. I was under the impression EBUG's could only play as a last resort 😎👍
I will always love hockey players for this. EBUGs maybe some random dude who plays in the area but when they're called upon, even if they do nothing but sit on the bench, they're one of the boys for that night.
I think that at the start of the following seasons All-Stars Skill Competition, if there is at least two emergency goalie appearances in the previous season, they should go head to head in a saves vs. the best scorers of the previous season. So you'd get a "Who's the best Emergency Goalie?" contest. Imagine Foster vs. McDavid or something like that. I would watch that for sure. It'd be a humorous thing that would be a random chance addon for an exhibition like contest to add a bit of fun for the goalies that may have only played for like 5 minutes or less, but to be showcased against the best of the best like an NHL Top Gun matchup... It would be seriously awesome.
I mean technically I’m an emergency backup. I’m a zam driver at a local rink and occasionally one of the teams will need a goalie and if I’m not working alone I’ll suit up. I’m basically David Ayers right?
It bugs me so much when people still call the ECHL the East Coast Hockey League. Its not called that anymore, its just ECHL. Calling it the East Coast league makes no sense bc you have teams all over the country in places like Idaho, Utah, Texas, etc..
Didn’t have to, I think the coach was giving the emergency contract guy some ice to live a dream. Campbell was perfectly healthy as far as I know. That game made me smile so much. Very well done by him.
Super classy of all the fans and players how they all rally behind the EBUG and cheer him on, regardless of who he's playing for.
That Ayres guy in the first game just made me smile. He did really well!
the david ayer’s game hands down coolest thing in pro sports in a long time
not for leafs fans
Loved that from the oilers, such a class act

Ahhh yesss. Dave Ayres. The zamboni driver who could make Steve Dangle's vocal chords crack to new heights.
My favorite EBUG was Mikko Koskinen because the Oilers let him come out of the stands for over 150 games.
What leafer or flamer
to make it worse, he wore 19

What a memory to have, like they said, who cares how you do it. He can say he's been a goaltender inthe NHL.
I actually worked with Matt Berlin, the ebug for the oilers. Awesome guy
So Ayres dressed for a Carolina-based team when they visited Toronto twice in the same month? That'll be something to tell his grand kids.
I loved watching the Oilers game and I really hope that he’s on our roster next year
Bro what 💀 he’s no where near nhl and never ever will
the ayres appearance always makes me smile
Matt Berlin still has a perfect 1.000 save percentage.
best tender in the league
I think for some, being the EBUG for a team they've been a major fan of would be a dream come true.
David ayres will always be a Hurricane great!!!
As a lifelong Hurricanes fan (I'm a year younger than the Canes) I can just about guarantee we would have credited him with winning the cup that year!
