Adam Baker true, but let’s not forget the Canes defense that game. They made it extremely difficult for the Leafs to do anything, of course the opposite can be said for the Leafs defense
You're a clown. The NHL has many bad goalies and around 30 goalies that aren't good enough to be a starter. These people get beat bad consistently against the best players in the world and this guy never even came close to their level so they have the right to worry when he comes in especially considering how bad he did and how lucky he is to have faced so few and easy shots. Its a feel good story but theres a reason everyone is laughing about it afterwards and mocking the fake hockey team in blue. If hes so good then why is this even a story?
Yup, there’s at least one for every game in every city. And they have to play for either the home or away team if they get called up. But that rarely ever happens, which is why this was so crazy.
I don't think Clifford deserved the penalty, but I understand why they made that call. He would have been a lightning rod for some kind of retaliation. At least they reduced it to 2 minutes.
That and I think it looked intentional to the refs at full speed on the ice, when they got a look with the video they realized they messed up. But when you see how far he traveled, you can see their line of reasoning

I am a Colorado Avalanche fan that said there are two things about this game that struck me. I I would like to thank David Ayers, The Hurricanes and the Toronto FANS for putting a smile on all our faces. Considering the look on Rod Brind'Amours face when he realized what was going to happen and then his joy at the buzzer.. we all knew there are miracles even if it's every 40 years. But I am left wondering if in the heads of a few of the Leaf players they "soft played" the second half of the game?
Ayres had a GA of 4.18 and a save % of .800. Yes the Leafs lost, but they lost because Carolina put on an absolute clinic on defensive mid zone hockey. That unfortunately is the lost story. Ayres should get his day in the sun. Damn it's hard to be a Leaf'r.
Carolina played like they were protecting a one goal lead in game 7 of the SCF, that’s how they won, they made absolutely certain the Leafs didn’t get any high danger chances in that 3rd period. They hit the ice running. And of course the offense did their job as well, they extended the lead the instant they got the opportunity.
Commentator said that this situation has never happened before but EBUG Scott Foster stepped in for Chicago a few years ago and helped the Blackhawks beat the Jets.
It’s the longest time an emergency goalie was forced into service. Scott Foster only had 14 minutes to play. Delia was credited the save as Foster held the lead
Well, Ayres had to be nearly 1.5 periods. Definitely an interesting and unprecedented situation where an EBUG plays nearly half the game. Also, both Forslund and Tracy have been around the league for a while (Forslund since '95 with the Whalers, Tracy since '98), so they've seen a thing or two.
2018 : Game 7 Loss 2019 : Game 7 Loss 2020 : Zamboni driver Loss and Game 5 Qualifying Loss 2021 : Game 7 Loss One of these things is not like the other.
I never new there’s a list of available goalies(whatever qualifies) in the area that is provided for every NHL game. The list is known as the Designated Survivor.
What got me from the first I watched various videos about this incident was that it looks like the Hurricane's coach never, not once, seems to even acknowledge Ayers. I know Ayer's isn't a Hurricane, but jeesus, the coach could at least look at him, for Christ's sake.

@@davyt0247 Let's be honest here. If the Leafs knew how to play hockey this would have been an easy win.
Adam Baker true, but let’s not forget the Canes defense that game. They made it extremely difficult for the Leafs to do anything, of course the opposite can be said for the Leafs defense
davyt0247 trust me I know haha. I'm a hurricanes fan and I thought we were screwed. We completely dominated the Leafs. I think they just gave up.
Never knew the emergency goalie was thing. This is a really cool.
Yup, there’s at least one for every game in every city. And they have to play for either the home or away team if they get called up. But that rarely ever happens, which is why this was so crazy.
Go check out Scott Foster for the Blackhawks
@@JesusFriedChrist what happens if both teams goalies are injured to the point of needing the emergency goalie?
I love that RUclips reminds me once every 2 months about this. Not even being sarcastic.
Full incident: we’ll skip over the first goalie injury and the first 8 shots BUT it’s the FULL Incident. Hate you clickbait!
Find something worthwhile to whine about.
Still one of the greatest stories in the NHL
The absolute beginning of this video when the Carolina and Toronto players realize what has happened and the 'oh f*cks' start going around is hilarious. And how did this all turn out?
Maple leaf helmets, maple leaf pads and gloves...although he obviously bleed blue, he never let the team down...
Officially confirmed he’s getting a movie
I don’t know why the one announcer would say his heart breaks for the canes it’s not like anyone died he’s making it sound like it’s the end of the world. To over the top.
SI had a good explanation of how important the game was to the Canes at the time. A loss would have put them 4 points out of a playoff spot, and going to Ayres certainly seemed like a guaranteed L for a team that was trying to make the post-season for the first time in 10 years.

@@jamesstewart556 they made the playoffs the season before lol
Yea but its part of the job to get people to care 🙂
As an NFL fan, this is absolutely amazing! Too bad the NFL is too lame to have rules like this 😢
Most of the players could probably play whatever needed position. Won’t be good at it but it’s be much more useful
This video will be in the Hockey Hall of Fame of my mind for the rest of my life. And yes, I am a Maple Leafs fan.
Yep. I really feel like Don Cherry that night because of my screaming and it sounds like his from the 90s era of HNIC.
How in the f**k were neither player even knocked out after this ??? It was such a massive hit that it whacked Mrazek's helmet clear off, faceplanted him into the rink and deflected Clifford into the wall...omg...
Naaaah, barely nudged him
I don’t even understand or watch hockey but I love this!!!
Second period commentary. "Oh my heart breaks for the Carolina Hurricane.". After the game. "Oh my heart breaks for the Toronto Maple Leafs."
My remark, "IT'S LIKE WHEN JOHN LENNON THOUGHT JESUS WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE OR SOMETHIN'!!!"
One of my favourite hockey moments!
RIGHT! His face, i bet he regretted that reaction!
Imagine the pressure this dude was facing when he entered the game
I would probably crumble in the tunnel
Commentator said that this situation has never happened before but EBUG Scott Foster stepped in for Chicago a few years ago and helped the Blackhawks beat the Jets.
I don't think foster got credit for the win though
Foster didn't get the win.
Is this virus over yet? No? Ok, I'm going back to bed. Notifications off* ✌️
2018 : Game 7 Loss
2019 : Game 7 Loss
2020 : Zamboni driver Loss and Game 5 Qualifying Loss
2021 : Game 7 Loss
One of these things is not like the other.
2022: Game 7 Loss
So Good of a feeling to watch couldn’t help but watch it twice!
I never new there’s a list of available goalies(whatever qualifies) in the area that is provided for every NHL game. The list is known as the Designated Survivor.
Well no it’s known as an EBUG and every team has one available for every game
Canes: we are so screwed!
Also the canes: Wait... we are playing the Leafs. We're good.
Legend. I could watch this over and over.
Netminders are the soul of hockey. Number 90 must have gone to bed feeling like a million bucks. Good show
Maple Leafs stats since 1967:
Cups: 0
Losses against zamboni drivers who work for the team: 1
0:30 didnt know Tom Brady played hockey too.. could be a brother man lol
Thanks for posting! The NHL's official highlight pack of this game doesn't show any of this
What got me from the first I watched various videos about this incident was that it looks like the Hurricane's coach never, not once, seems to even acknowledge Ayers. I know Ayer's isn't a Hurricane, but jeesus, the coach could at least look at him, for Christ's sake.
Chris Campbell he did later in the locker room after the win, and I’m sure he addressed him at times not caught in this video
Welcome to pro sports
This always makes me tear up.
youd be nuts to make reimer suit back up with a lower body (looked like a knee) injury for a regular season game.
Chills! This enjoyable scenes! Straight A grades! Back here for ongoing support!😆 This is simple entertainment for me It gets interesting near the end.
what the hell is that goalie thinking coming to play that puck when you don’t have another goalie
you don't think about what if's you just play the game
One of the best moments in hockey history!
i love how he had a leafs helmet on while playing against them.
I know right it’s really funny
Marlies....not the leafs
I read somewhere he was wearing a leafs t shirt under the gear.
@@jamielushman7577 can you please explain what his incentive to do well for the Canes is? Why would he want to help them win when he works for Toronto?
@@tionlover That was his role. Duty is important or do you not believe so?
Wish I couldve seen the actual highlights, that's kind of what I came here for
When mrazek got hit I KNOW David aryes’ heart sunk to the ocean floor
Man waited his whole life and delivered a dub, this is that do or die moment you put yourself in as a kid
I wish the full game is available on yt
One of the best defensive performances I've ever seen. The canes were incredible when ayres came in.
One of the coolest and quirkest things in sports... The Emergency Goalie!
I mean the guy left his box. You leave your blue box, your home. Your free game.
No he wasn't, players have to avoid contact with the goalie for any reason
