The large fastback is amazing, I’m a plumber and use it probably 10-15 times a day, I liked it so much I actually bought 6 more just Incase they discontinue them. For tradesmen, the fastback is invaluable.
Yeah, I suppose it's worth noting that blade replacement requires a tool, but.... Really, that's a minor downside at most, and probably worth it for the non-rattley blade.
Ok so I’ve used the gerber for years and after two years I found out if you push down on the pocket clip right on the hump where is has the GE in gerber and then push up as you push down with your thumb the clip will come out and you can use that as the screw driver for the blade and then it just pops back into place once you are done. I’ve been doing this every time I change blades for around 3 years now and the clip still goes back into place and doesn’t come out on accident.
I almost never flip the blade with my Gerber. Idk why but I feel like part of the already used half will now be sticking out into the usueable area. But I'm picky and weird and razor blades are cheap. Also, in a pinch, although your ideas if using the new blade as a screw driver, a dime fits PERFECTLY.
You can also go to the hardware store and replace it with a knurled hex screw that looks like this [||||]======. That's what I did to my 99E and it was the best mod ever. Gonna do it to my EAG when it comes in.
You think the “plastic” is going to wear out? When’s the last time you wore out anything made of Zytel? The button spring, the black slider, the main spring, the blade, both drivers, all the screws holding the thing together, and the pocket clip are going to wear out before that “plastic” does
I carry the Gerber everyday because I prefer the screw over a quick release design. The stability is worth the extra time in my opinion. My frame lock is super stable and I have no concerns when using it.
On the gerber you can use the back of the blade for the screw since when your changing the blade you’ll have two one in the knife and the old or new one
As soon as the Prybrid became available, I jumped on two of them. This is one utility knife that can fill multiple rolls and never feel bad about doing it. Solid frame indeed. Pick one up. I carry my Prybrid now more than anything. My only gripe, they could have put a pocket clip on the back. I use to lanyard hole as its supposed to be. Para chord with a clip attached. Attach it to belt loop, set in pocket or, just let it hangout.
Hey man, glad you like the Razorlite EDC! I just got the Slidewinder in, and you're correct sir; an all metal version would be worth double the price. Now tell us about the different blades! Someone mentioned the dual edge serrated blade was hard to find.
I found that smaller Milwaukee fast back at my local home depot for $15cad 2 years ago and picked it up immediately. I'd had the normal fastback knife twice before and loved it. I use it every night at work and it never let's me down. Works barehanded or with any size of glove. Small enough to not be intrusive but bit enough to be able to handle and use firmly. Love it. Also, if you EDC a swiss army knife, even if it's just a little classic sd on your keys, you have a screwdriver to change blades on that gerber. Just a thought. Keep up the vids man. They're awesome
Great Video! Utility knives have put a big dent in my Spyderco EDC. If the day calls for breaking down boxes or cutting carpet the high end knives stay at home. Every time I knock the tip off a utility blade I cringe to think "glad that was not my ___________" fill in the blank $100+ blade. The other benefit is less time spent sharpening and my pocket knives are generally razor sharp when needed. Thanks for the video. You're absolutely right about the slidewinder, if they made it a $20-$30 tool it could be so much better. My main issue is it takes no pressure at all on the button to retract the blade. I've since taken it apart, bent the leaf spring a tiny bit more and deepened the channel that the button falls into to keep the blade open, and that did make it much better.

The Outdoor Edge Razorlite is at the bottom end of a whole genre of knives - folding scalpels with various lengths and types of interchangeable blades. Havalon do the best and biggest range -- even a folding scalpel-holder incorporated into their own Leatherman-style multitool. Great video BTW.
My Milwaukee Fastback 48-22-1502 in a nutshell is absolutely perfect for me, especially for the $10 price tag. I have the entire Fastback line and this is my favorite! Blade extraction is butter smooth, tape measure guide, 2 different wire/rope cutting locations so the blade doesn't dull in the same location, bottle opener, magnetic xtra 5 blade storage compartment, lanyard hole, metal outer shell. This Fastback utility knife is extremely rugged, ergonomic and its safety features never interfere with it's operations. It's now part of my EDC. Job well done Milwaukee!
@@basanistes359exactly what I was to write. Place edge of cap over edge of a hard wooden surface, slightly tilt the bottle away from table, light karate chop on the free side of cap and you can open any bottle in the world.
I'm a lineman, so most of my tools are Klein. I was in a supply house a couple months ago and I was playing around with a Klein assisted opening utility knife, and needless to say it came with me. I carry it everyday at work, and it is absolutely my favorite tool. I love it so much, I ordered another one on Amazon to put in my personal tool bag at home.
Just bought the Gerber EAB with the plan to replace the blade retention screw to one that is a hair longer to make it easier to replace the blade on the fly, and also double as a thumb stud. See how that works out. thanks for the great work and greetings from Sweden.
I was gonna do that, but I figured that would be "too close" and I wouldn't be able to bend my old thumb in that far. I opted to drill and tap a hole for a 6-32 cap screw and loc-tited it in. Works well. In the process, though I discovered the blade retention screw is a 3mm, 0.5 pitch FYI. Hardware store here didn't have that in a cap screw.
I just bought the smaller Milwaukee fastback 48-22-1906 today at Home Depot for $8.97. It was on the rack right beside the larger one and the pack you bought. I LOVE it and want to get a couple more.
In my opinion, the R.U.T. will hold it's value better than the others from what I've seen on eBay. The V3 comes with a Tajima V-Rex II blade and it doesn't rattle when opened or closed but Lenox Gold blades rattle in every position.
Edit: I emailed Rexford Knives about the V3 rattle issue with certain blades and within an hour, Todd Rexford emailed me back, which was rather impressive, and said the quality control of razor blade mass production wasn't good and they aren't always cut to precise specifications. That is what leads to the rattle more than which brand you use.
I've carried the Gerber for several months and I love it. I always have a flathead on my leatherman so blade changes are not a problem. Definitely want to upgrade to the RUK and tbh I'd love to have them all 😍
Slight correction. The gerber EAB is tool less. The trick is to use the new blade as the screwdriver. The screw extends above the surface enough to allow the back of the new blade to engage the screw. i have not use a coin/screwdriver in years.
Probably gonna try a RUK, the Cerakoted one. I have a Eab works good for me and I have a Screwpop for my keys. I do like carrying utility knives for simple chores which is usually all I need. I save my knives for when I'm going somewhere I see needing them. Great video looking forward to more. Cheers
Made my screwpop perfect... Put it in the oven until the oven reached 300 degrees and pulled it out. This reduced the magnet strength to the perfect amount where it wouldn't lift my flashlight (Fenix e15) like it did before but still holds the blade in place.
I have this exact OLFA knife, bought it for leathercrafting. Must say that the thicker blade doesn't slice leather all that well. Would recommend something with a thinner blade for better cutting.
I was actually able to find the small fastback in store at a home depot near me I think it was 10 or 12 dollars on its own. I carry cause sometimes I prefer a thinner blade for fine cutting and opening packages and the a regular blade for heavier cuts or tasks.
I have the original TPT slide, got it on kickstarter when they first came out, however because they are so short and thin I don't use it that much, I use the workpro as I got better grip on it, but the blade do sometime pop out when I use it more repressively, which brings me to designing my own one, hence I'm looking these utility knife reviews for an inspiration. Once I develop it and be happy with it, I will send you one for honest thought on it. 😃
When I switched job, instead of the Milwaukee Switchback Gen 2 that I used to carry, I chose the Gerber Superknife. It's smaller, have better ergonomic, a deep pocket carry clip and use thicker utility blades. However, for normal days, I carry a Screewpop. Around the house, I will grab my Switchback or one of my Stanley Quickslide. Nothing fancy as it doesn't need to. For blades, I use mostly Lenox Gold Titanium-Edge Utility Knife Blades but I recently tend to use more the Stanley Extra Heavy Duty Utility Blades. The later are 1mm thick as opposed to 0.6mm for normal blades. Keep up your excellent work!
Just Ordered the Outdoor Edge Slidewinder in Blue... I actually like the look of the Plastic on the Side. Just a little knolife for opening Packages etc. Good Review Bro. 🔪😎👍🏼
My son just showed me a channel called 'giaco whatever' here on youtube. This guy makes his own utility blades. Just another option to check out if you haven't already. 😁
Had to sit through my 8am class before I could watch this. Awesome video man! Now you have me looking forward to the V2 RUK, definitely agree about a needed prybar 👌
I carried the outdoor edge Slidewinder for months. I found the blade is not very secure. If there is too much pressure it will retract. Also it is quite easy to accidentally push in the retract button when you grip it firmly to cut. Also it won’t take premium blades. They don’t fit. I’m going back to my Gerber EAB. Not the lite. I think it’s got a better lock and grip. Thanks for your vids.
I've been carrying the other 'full' version of the Gerber EAB for over 6 months now and I haven't had any issues with the frame lock. The shape between the normal and lite version is also substantially different. I much prefer the non-lite version.
I EDC as well the Gerber EAB. The liner lock can go a Little flimsy over time but in my case I have used the knife as well as an throwing knife. That gives some slack on the liner lock. Otherwise the Gerber EAB is definatelly the way to go. It's the compactest as well with about the most exposed blade edge of all of those. But the main Thing is the screw contributes to the most sturdy blade Fixation since even when using the blade as a flat head screwdriver (and belive me, there is a Point were you will use that as an flat head screwdriver) the blade will not come loose and is sturdy enough not to break eighter. As well the Gerber EAB is the safest. Nothing will come looser in your pocket and the liner lock makes sure the blade does not snap Close on your Hand while using.
Yes, do flashlights. Do wallets (the EDC/slim/odd types) Do a day/trip/life overview of how your use your EDC. I mean there are people who carry EDC just as a hobby and there are some who carry for actually using/what they need everyday. I want to see how you use whatever you like to carry everyday not like how you would use it if it happens. Just like you most of the time I am working in front a PC except when I am out for meetings, client visits and my bike rides. My EDC for normal day vs EDC for weekends is a bit different especially if its a outdoor weekend which happens once in 4 - 6 weeks.
My two Slidewinders will not accept a standard thickness replacement blade. A Stanley blade (or Dewalt) seems to be too thick for the locking mechanism to engage. I replaced the blade and it did not work. I contacted the company and they sent me a replacement. The Stanley blade did not work in the replacement knife, but their original blade did work in the old one. So, their design only works with ultra thin blades. Not sure where to get those. It is a shame. I love the shape and thinness of this knife. It fits perfectly in my hand with a lanyard at the end.
I would love to see a comparison on two of the newer Outdoor Edge utility knives, the B.O.A and the Utilipro, both appear to be one handed folders. Otherwise love your vids.
I know one shouldn't carry anything else in a pocket with a weapon, but, i like my clipped knife's point facing down. That prevents me from stabbing myself with a weak springed old knife. It also puts the thumb flicker right on my thumb when i pinch the top of knife out. Ready to open.
A big thing you didnt cover was how well the blades lock and stay in. I've had alot of utility knives that the blade falls out when your cutting. That's why the gerber is my one of my favorites
Whew, thanks for the feedback on that, because I just bought one today from Amazon the reviews are mostly positive but I suspect bots and censorship run rampant on the site
Enjoining your channel. I was carrying the Gerber EAB for years. And yes, used it as a money clip. I needed to change it up. I bought the Yeeyou. It felt sold. But also heavy. The discomfort in the hand with the glassbreaker was deal breaker for me. They should have made a flathead screw driver instead. I also have the Slidewinder. It’s my EDC. I like that it’s light weight and the tools. It does function as a money clip as well. I agree about changing to all metal. But would make it heavier.
Loew's has a 20$ utility knife pack, and the knife stores 4 extra blades plus a mini version with a keyring. You should check it out. It's my EDC knife.
Taylor, great product review. Also check Havalon knives. They specifically use interchangeable blades. I got one years ago for under 50. Excellent knife to have.
I have been looking for a while as well and came across Everyday Blade by Korcraft LLC here on youtube. I haven't received mine yet, but it looks amazing! Slicey you and Best Damn EDC should try and get your hands on one to try it out.
I think the fastbacks defeat the purpose of of a utility edc knife. The point is to have a small discret non intimitading knife used for box cutting and very light duty tasks. If you know you'll be cutting carpet then bring a real utility knife. On the fastback you carry a very small blade in an unnecessary large handle (even worse than the PM2 in b:h ratio).
Gerber for me, only due to its cheap so your more likely to carry it and it's heavy enough to feel that it's still in your pocket, but then it's also cheap enough not to ruin your day if it's falls out.
I use the Stanley for work. And I spend the extra buck and get the heavy duty blades for it. I really don't need them, but I like being able to push the tool a little bit more if I need too.
I stopped using my Gerber when I had a blade slip out and sliced open my finger even though it was tightened down completely and properly with a screwdriver
I've had the full size Fastback for a long time, and use it in the shop a lot. I just picked up the compact fastback at Home Depot and have been carrying it the last few days. Love it. I am thinking about trying to make some custom scales for it though. I love Milwaukee, but the bright red is maybe a little too intense for everyday use.
The RazorLlite 3.5" looks very usefull; you could probably clean a fish with it, although I wonder if the channel that the blade slides into it would tend to gum up with fish guts, or pine sap from whittling, or whatever else you're cutting. If they made a stainless blade and everything was guaranteed to be non corrosive ( saltwater approved?) it would make an excellent all purpose knife for your fishing tackle box. It doesn't appear to have a place inside the handle to store an extra blade, however.
The sidewinder is a cool little knife but I have yet to find a replacement blade other than the “outdoor edge” blade that came with it, that allows it to function the way that it is supposed to.
Great video. To me personally that razor one is not a utility knife. Sure the blade is replaceable but once those 6 are done? I've never seen those blades anywhere . A utility knife is going to any hardware or supermarket and finding replacement blades easy for a buck or 2 when you need it. Or you get to an airport and forgot about your knife? No worries. Surrender the blade and buy a new ome when you get where you're going. I just dont see that with that knife for me personally. Again great video!
9:07 Im not entirely sure, but the craft utility knife you got there, i think those blades are incredibly common. Theyre for art and craft, like cutting paper and carving. Theyre similar to a scalpel.
I'd add the black and white plastic Scheffield folder. I got mine for $7 with a multitool. Granted, that multitool is the absolute worst you can possibly get your hands on but it's worked well for me in a pinch. The utility blade is great.
Nebo makes a utility knife I've been edc carrying for years it has a button lock and a single button blade release as well as a carabineer style clip/bottle opener I bought at my local hardware store for $9 great deal lasted for me about 7 years now!
I know I'm late to the party, I just ordered the RUK V2 in brass and I can't wait for it to get here. I think it will go great with my EDC Knife, the Kershaw Natrix in copper.
The frame lock on that gerber may feel flimsy at first but I can personally guarantee that if you didn’t get a factory defect, it’s strong…been using mine for years
Fyi stone wash and tumble are the same thing. Thet rexford is acid washed and then stone washed or tumbled. Amazing video though. Thank you and keep up the amazing content.
The inconvenience of blade change on eab leads to its positive for me, no blade wiggle. The milwaukee fastback has a button lock not axis lock, two totally different lock systems btw. The mechanism will wear out before the frn handle on outdoor edge. They should have used g10, not all metal.
I carry a few screwpop knives on/in various keys and bags. You can get 2 blades in if you try and even with 1 the blade is stable when under use. I've used them for heavy and light duty tasks and have never had an issue with safety.
I've been carrying the outdoor edge sidewinder for several years. It fits great in a pocket slip. My only problem is that with my huge hulk hands my thumb always finds the retract button when cutting. I do wish the pocket clip was on the other end though. I also carry the gerber prybrid it takes #8 or 10 xacto blades. It is a pretty good little prybar with a blade.
been carrying the gerber for 10+ years, for the price it is rock solid, never had any problem with the lock... also you didnt mention one of the nicest things, the length of the blade you get a solid 2/3 of the blade to cut with far more than any other one I have seen.
I EDC THE OUT DOOR EDGE POCKET KNIFE STYLE BLADE. YOU SAID IT FEELS REALLY CHEAP. TRUST ME IT'S NOT CHEAP. IT'S JUST VERY LIGHT WEIGHT BECAUSE OF THE MATERIALS USED. I HAVE SPYDERCOS THAT FEEL JUST AS LIGHT. I'VE HAD MINE FOR TWO YEARS NOW AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. IT HAS A PLASTIC CLIP THAT HAS NEVER BROKEN AND IF IT EVER DOES THEY WILL REPLACE IT FOR FREE YOU JUST HAVE TO SEND A PICTURE OF IT. THE NEW ONES NOW COME WITH A STEEL CLIP. THE BLADES ARE REALLY STRONG AND ARE GREAT FOR WOOD WORK AT HOME OR IN THE WOODS, ALSO MAKES A GREAT SKINNING KNIFE. YOU CAN EVEN PUT A LANYARD ON IT. NOTHING BUT GREAT THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS KNIFE. I THINK YOU SHOULD EDC THIS KNIFE FOR A WHILE. I THINK YOU'LL LIKE IT.
I not sure if anyone suggested but may want to checkout Cristy made knives American made a little much at $30 But blade can be resharpened but very light No bells and whistles but perfect EDC knife for what most of us use a knife for. Enjoying the channel thanks.
Good stuff, honestly haven't carried a utility knife in years, and when I did it was a Husky OTF with rapid change blades from Lowe's or Home Depot. Usually I have a small, cheap, but good knife that I dedicate to hard, utility tasks and keep it sharp for just that. Currently it's the Snap-On 871042 Frame lock folder I got at Auto Zone back in 2014. Now for the three people who gave a thumbs down, they're just hating...
Theres a knockoff of the rexford called paper knives edc that's only $6 cuz its steel rather than ti but as a budget option it's a good choice if ur just starting out
You can open the original TPT with one hand easily. Put your thumb on the back of the blade and tip of index finger on the opening notch. It opens and closes just fine that way. Great review!
I'm all for buying expensive tools, but utility knives is not one of them. As a carpenter a basic Olfa is the best utility knife anyone can buy that actually uses utility knives regularly.
I got the YeeYou, I really like it. It replaced a multi tool, and I wanted to add a utility knife. I'm not really bothered that you can't get a gorilla grip on the thing, because I kind of accepted that it's a multi tool, and with most multi tools, you can't really get a good grip/leverage/etc. on any of the attachments, whether it be because your hand is hitting the next tool over, or the tool tucks into another part so it's not super big, things like that. I've just grown really used to having a screwdriver, or a bottle opener, or whatever in a pinch. I wanted it on my keychain, takes up less space than my key fab and the multi tool it replaced. It works fine for box cutting, which is all I really wanted it for. I have a Husky utility knife that's very similar to that smaller Milwaukee that I don't EDC for everything else, and I do EDC a folder in case I'm out and need more beef. Oh, it's surprisingly very solid feeling, especially considering the price. So, add to that I really can't really justify more than say 20 bucks for a utility knife, it was perfect for me. Purely situational though, I totally get why you wouldn't like it.

You can get an aftermarket nub screw instead of the flathead screw it comes with.
The eab lite might be inconvenient to change blades but that blade is held rock solid. Definitely my favorite of all of them.

Job well done Milwaukee!
I’ve used the Gerber for 2 years and love it, you can use your tape measure hook to loosen the screw
"I don't know why something you would use on a worksite would have a bottle opener"
*Laughs in Australian*
Laughs in America must have never been in on a job site
I don't know why anyone needs a bottle opener. The side of any table or hard surface is sufficient.
Laughs in Mexican 😂
You can tell he has never worked with his hands. They look baby soft and comments like that say it all.
Definitely want to upgrade to the RUK and tbh I'd love to have them all 😍
3:00 i bet you can use the new blade you are about to change it
$140 and blade-rattle? Crazy.
$140 an no blade rattle, crazy!
Slight correction. The gerber EAB is tool less. The trick is to use the new blade as the screwdriver. The screw extends above the surface enough to allow the back of the new blade to engage the screw. i have not use a coin/screwdriver in years.
I just picked up a Gerber E.A.B. light and really like it
I've been been using the Gerber eab for like 10 years, lost my 1st so bought another one. I live that thing
Cheers
The smaller Milwaukee can be purchased separately. They are less then $10 at my local HD.
Ordered the TPT Slide this morning, went straight for the big bucks.
Thanks a bunch! Loved this! Ordered a TPT slide a while ago and I'm looking forward to it!
The small Milwaukee can be bought alone at Home Depot for 8.98 in store. I got one myself
THANK YOU!!!
Most comprehensive and informative utility knife review I've seen (and I've seen a LOT.)
from someone who isn't into blades I have to say Im really digging the workpro utility knife. So cheap and lightweight.
As someone who always carries a pocket knife I absolutely would love the EDGE RAZOR KNIFE WITH THE 3.5" BLADE!!!! Blade gets dull change it out! 👍
@@TheRealIncryptus I guess I didn't pay too well of attention to the beginning of the video!! Thanks!!
My clip keeps breaking
Got a Gil Tech RUK about 14 months ago and it lives on my keys, used almost everyday for something or another.
Do wallets (the EDC/slim/odd types)
Do a day/trip/life overview of how your use your EDC.
My EDC for normal day vs EDC for weekends is a bit different especially if its a outdoor weekend which happens once in 4 - 6 weeks.
best edc blade really is the milwaukee fastback compact
Been waiting for this one!!!! Loving my Gil-Tek RUK!
How long did you wait from order to ship? It's been a week and no tracking for me yet.
WickdPerfekT Mine was fast but it was in stock. Owner just had s child so he’s catching up now.
This video is so awesome. Nobody else ever reviewed all of them!
Great video, ordered my tpt slide the other day when i heard you mention quick in beginning of your last video, glad i went with the slide thanks
Cool options but I'll stick to my Gerber eab it's the best I've found for me and what I do for work
I like the little ones, like the plastic one. Titanium ones I bet they're awesome. Thanks for the heads up, first time seeing the tiny ones
I use the fastbacks strictly and I haven’t been able to find a decent machined one I like :/ I’ll just keep looking.
Theyre similar to a scalpel.
just ordered the TPT Slide with your Link, I also have some partially serrated blades coming for it
where do you get the copper replacement blades? Great video, as always
The Outdoor Edge is a cool little unit, it is picky with the type of blades you use, some fit some don't
I not sure if anyone suggested but may want to checkout Cristy made knives
American made a little much at $30
But blade can be resharpened but very light
No bells and whistles but perfect EDC knife for what most of us use a knife for.
Currently carry the Gerber... but I backed the TPT Slide... so waiting for that to show... can't wait. Stoked that you picked it out of all those.
Can anyone tell me what those gold serrated blades are called? And where I can get them?
I'm all for buying expensive tools, but utility knives is not one of them. As a carpenter a basic Olfa is the best utility knife anyone can buy that actually uses utility knives regularly.
Love the timex expedition, great edc watch and makes for a good beater too
I had the Milwaukee fast back and loved it. Just lost it two weeks ago.
Purely situational though, I totally get why you wouldn't like it.
how long ago did you order it? I was looking and it is currently unavailable.
@@quewerty8401 Two or three weeks ago. That sucks, hope they get it back in stock.
Do the sliding designs blunt the razor with the edge sliding along the metal holder ?
(GERBER LITE TRICK).
Really like the maker knife. Can’t wait for it to hit the market, never ordered anything on Kickstarter before so don’t feel comfortable will wait for it to hit market hopefully.
Watched a few of your videos today. Couldn’t not subscribe. Can’t wait for future videos 🤙🏻
