- 'I've had hungry students who couldn't concentrate; I've filed tax returns for kids' parents. You're the only adult they trust - the only adult that talks to them like they're a person': a perspective of life as a teacher in two different US states
• Share your story: what's your experience of teaching in America?
If only I had more than a very few number of teachers that ACTUALLY cared, ever.
Kids always think that way. It’s your perspective. If you always walk around being negative you’ll get negative back. Try smiling for a whole day whilst you’re out and report back the difference.
Just hearing the story made me cry
This video is in no way disturbing, just beautiful.
The issue with schools in America is POVERTY. Plain and simple. Poverty and no mental health services breeds abuse and neglect, and by extension behavior disorders, hunger, and kids not being able to concentrate in class. Unfortunately the conservatives in this country see no problem with this, just continue to blame poor people for being poor and refusing all help. The situation is totally avoidable. There is no reason for these kids to be so miserable except that our society has decided it's okay.
Great video! We should share it to Brazilians who super-idealize the USA.
How about we all improve education 🇺🇸🇩🇪🇦🇺🇯🇵🇧🇷🇨🇴
This got a lot of negative comments and I’m trying to understand why.. pple are seriously getting stuck on her saying “Baltimore” and “America” instead of the actual point of the video. Sheeesh!!!! TEACHER WHOEVER U R! THIS IS ALL FACTS. I C YOUR POINT! 🙌🏽🙏🏽

So who can tell me how this is any different to teaching in the UK? Candy Clarkson BA(Hons) MA(Ed) CertEd(FE) PGCE Secondary NASENCO (SpLD)APC; with 35 year's teaching experience in the UK.
Kids don’t get shot or fear for their lives? If you’ve got so many damn letters after your name why don’t you tell us? Make use of that damn brain instead of being the 52%
This is a very sad story that should anger all of us
The truth about American education is really too shocking dto be publicized, so it isn’t! The deadly combination of unionized teachers, appalling urban schools, twisted and invented history and liberal mayors and councils has led to monstrously costly expenditure on their schools, sums that other countries would die for, and which is ultimately TOTALLY WASTED. This is a crime against juvenile humanity and those responsible should be brought to justice. And the victims are mainly black, one generation after another, abandoned by the likes of BLM who find it easier to topple a few dozen immobile statues!! How utterly PATHETIC!!
I taught Literature at a juvenile detention center in Colorado. My students were Latino, black, and...white. Not everything is about race. And violence isn’t racist.
USA has people from all over the world 🌍🌏
Now take a look at the kids in Palestine guardian. How they are being destroyed by being blockaded in a huge open prison by Israel.
Who's selling what
Time and time again, America, get your gun lobby under control!
Yeah, that's going to make kids graduate....
That is not the problem.
That isn't the problem. The government isn't giving the resources and support to teachers.
Do you even live here? That's really not the point.
19 dead kids and 2 dead teachers still isn't enough to get these delusional crackheads to start thinking properly.
That many teachers are sexually attracted to their pupils. That sex education is a pointless waste of resources. That pupils are indoctrinated in political bias rather than being taught to decide and conclude for themselves. That they're robbing the youth of their self-esteem. When I was at school in the 80's here in the UK, I remember that often I would feel so hungry that I would eat off the ground the food that other pupils threw away. My shoes had holes in them and I would try and hide this by wearing dark socks, or having to colour my socks if they were white. The teachers bullied me more than the pupils that would gang up on me. They hated me so much that eventually they claimed I was mentally ill. The Headmistress actually had to send me into the city for rounds of medical/psychological testing, I vaguely remember this. After the tests they said there was nothing wrong with me, that in fact I had exceptional ability and if I ever get sent there again they would be investigating the school. After that things weren't as bad. With their jobs on the line I guess they had to grit their teeth with that irritating, quiet boy with the ginger hair.
Capitalism demands that the poor are at fault. It is not the fault of the rich.
Who says that? Your own negative outlook on life?
David Boson 👏👏👏 good comment.
The Justice system demands the ones doing the shooting are at fault. The sociologists demand it's the single parents that are at fault. The criminals demand it's the police that are at fault. The predators demands it's the prey's fault. Elmer Fudd demands it's the rabbits fault. There's a lot of fingers being pointed, but pointing fingers doesn't solve anything at all.
iq 70 ain't lern mo' betta.
That's your genius takeaway from the video? who's the really the one with the "70 IQ"? (Hint:you)
“I do what I can when I can do it” sounds like my pessimistic teachers when I was younger. American public education is the worst. Especially Georgia and the south in general.
so sad. how can We help?
There is so many themes in this video to talk about.
What is the perspective? Is there a lot of these kids? What is the percentage? What is the percentage in another town? What is the percentage in other countries?
Shouldn't the parents be more responsible?
Is it only about black and brown kids?
I am really not sure what you are trying to say in this video
That's how I took it too. You know EVERYBODY is going through all this, not just Brown and black. I think that's enough now. ( and I'm Brown)
Well, the examples are from a school in Balitmore, which is 63% African American (There aren't many Hispanic people) so in this case, they are probably talking about mostly black students. I'm sure there are probably similar school issues in more white areas, probably not so much gang violence as drug addiction.
Take a look at yourselves then ask why don’t you understand this video . You should get your answer. That’s why you and your parents have always stood on the wrong side of history on every issue. And you always will . Until those same issues start to effect your society. Example: opioids epidemic. Meth . Coal mining job loss. Dying population. Hepatitis rising in the white society now more than ever. You see when you notice that it’s more white on drugs than any other demographic then it’s a problem. When it crack cocaine in the 80s your answer was to lock us all up . # I feel nothing . Now that the shoe is on the other foot . Expect me to say it doesn’t effect me so I don’t care .
Mikh’ael Zion
Well said 👏👏👏
@@ImmortalMysticBird thank you for that. I too, grew up without warm clothes. I remember getting so embarrassed when my mom went to the main office to tell them the reason why I didn't go to school that day was because I didn't have a coat. They took me and my mom to a room where there were unclaimed apparel that I could look through. I hated it and this was high school😔.I used to work in the cafeteria to get my lunch. There wasn't welfare or food stamps in those days. My mother raised us. Today, things r better. Free lunches and breakfast for all. Great America
So? What’s the next step?
America is a place where every body has a opportunity.
What does school have to do with being shot tho.
What does this video will have to being shot
And that’s why you’re not a teacher . You just don’t get it .
Mikh’ael Zion I don't understand what the disturbing truth is in school if a kid dies outside of the school. I mean it's tragic, but that tragedy is not exclusive for the teachers. Like seriously, the title implies that the school could have done anything to prevent this but the video doesn't really connect the shooting to the school.
You don’t think living in a place where you can get shot affects the learning environment?
Stay away from children.
TItle is deceiving. I live in the US and have teenage kids in school. THis is not their experience. This here only happens in very minute sectors of America. I am not sure what this video is trying to do.
Akin JustAkin if it’s so minute why is it Ellen is giving away money every week to all the teachers who come on and tell about how they need to do what this video is on about? Do I need to watch Fox News to see how amazing America and trump is?
Akin JustAkin then you live under a rock
@@SimonLeeds If Ellen is your barometer then you do not know the country. Baltimore is not representative of the entire country. If an individual publishes this video, I might say they are only saying it from their point of view but when a News outlet with resources to gather more facts from different backgrounds in the country does this. I will say they are pushing something.
@@aliciadegroff7193 Nope. Just lived 12 years in NJ/NY and 10 years in TX. Very active in my kids' schools, PTA and youth programs.
Wow. Lots of comments and opinions.
The picture painted by this video is true in some places but completely false in others.
Fact is that some environments are better than others for various reasons. Economic, crime, natural beauty and other factors are different everywhere we go.
The unfortunate truth is that the majority of the kids in these areas are facing some challenges that are the fault of the parents and some are circumstantial. Growing up poor in an urban area is rough. I was that kid.
But when you add in the fact you have three siblings all by different fathers and not a one is coming around or paying support and now mom has brought yet another loser into the household..... Not helping.
I was this kid too. 6 kids by 5 father's and only my dad bothered to be a man and take responsibility for his kids.
Men in America don't take pride in being father's as much as the old days. Thank you feminism and the "'"I DON'T NEED A MAN"" mindset it created.
Women in the USA need to hold men to higher standards by not giving a loser or thug the time of day.
By nature men will do what is necessary to seduce a female. Women began to value a man who isn't afraid to show his feelings back a few decades ago. Now everywhere you look you see men who are sobbing like children in the theater watching a sad movie. Ladies you are the only ones who can change the men by altering your standards.
NO BOOM BOOM FOR THE LOSER'S equals men who will take care of responsibilities. Men who take responsibility equals an improved next generation of people.
Addressing this problem with a goofy cartoon obfuscates the issue
*The disturbing truth (mostly) about teaching in (big cities) in America*
Why black and brown boys? What about white and yellow kids? Don't they have issues? And if not, why not? Can the struggling white, brown and black kids learn from the non-struggling white and East-Asian communities?
Jimsy no you don’t have the same issues , you are so disconnected. It’s clear who you vote for . You live in a bubble of delusion . Like most whites . You’re not at ground 0 where this stuff all goes down . Nor would I expect you to want to be . Just stay silent . You have nothing intelligent to contribute to the conversation. All you want to do is created confusion.
Mikh’ael Zion but he is right tho. find out what makes people successful and then attempt to recreate it.
@@mikhaelzion2145 I think that it's hard for people who don't have to experience life like this, to really understand. I'm from Europe and yes we also have our issues but if I look to the US it doesn't even seem real that people can actually live like that.
I'm the Queen America is heaven for whites since slavery . And he’ll for blacks . We can’t rise up as a nation here because there is so much red tape . I can send you videos of police planting drugs in a black owned store just to get him to fall . This has been going on for centuries. Whites here will deny it as usual. But like every we bring out . Later they admit it does happen . Think about it . In the 30s whites said there wasn’t a race problem. In the 40s the same . Then all of a sudden the 60s happened then they blamed communism. 70s 80s 90s they said we are inherently evil and super predictors . And now they are blaming a football player for the nations division . They never take responsibility for nothing . They always blame everyone but themselves. Then they tell us we are the problem, the reason for crime . It’s like a abusive husband saying you made him hit you because you wouldn’t behave. It’s sick . They mock us , ridicule us , but never really look at their own statistics how a majority or all rapes committed are done by whites . Or how whites have the highest amount of drug addiction in this country yet blacks do the prison time . Right now there is a opioids epidemic and none of the whites are even seeing jail time . Why because they are white. We all know this . The laws here in America only apply to blacks and Hispanics. It’s always been that way . Remember I live in ground 0 . Never been in the bubble . This is common sense to us . That’s why they keep us poor . Cheap work force , and desperate work force . That’s why they give us poor education. That’s why we are sold bad foods in our community. That’s why it takes so long for police to show up to a actual crime . That’s why even on the job we are treated less than even if we have more experienced than the other white. Pay attention when you go into a business. Who is the upper management and who is working to floor of Any business.
You need to go back to the classroom, because you write like a moron.
This is why we're all so stupid.

Teaching in America or just Baltimore? click bait.
As a former teacher, I can tell you the details from my experience teaching in a Title 1 school in the rural south are different, but not the overall impression.
Implying this doesn’t happen in the UK.
I remember when the Guardian wasn’t such a rag.
How is it implying that exactly?
The UK education system ranks higher than the US education system in every regard.
Are the guardian not allowed to speak about something not in the uk?
It does, but nothing near to the situation in the USA. We have a robust welfare state in place, which the Tories want to break into pieces so they can make it the mini USA. But we won't let it happen, we will make it even better in a very short time.
There is literally zero implication in this video that the UK doesn't have problems too, it's just looking at it from a US perspective. The Guardian is an international newspaper after all. Jeez!
Someone died. TrIiGeReD lIbErAlS
Does BLM care?
In socialist country this wouldn't happen
kulaki
by the way, no need to be socialist. The ideal Country needs a better and equal welfare system

No it would be worse. Why don’t you go to Venezuela and see how socialism is doing for them before trying to stick it down americas throat
How's Venezuela working out?
What America are you talking about? I never seem anyone like this
Get outside your bubble then
Avg Jane19 It's because he doesn't live in a shitty impoverished black neighborhood and probably had parents that care about him, unlike you.
What bubble?
for the majority of America, what is shown in this video is not America.
@@JoseVasquez-vj3lo your clearly blind just come to Chicago or compton and stay with a black family for a month then you will understand

1:56 black on black violence....
So?
It was black and brown
@@HollyandChanel Arlenis B, Obama was the biggest supporter sending drones ten times more than Bush. Which made deployment rates really low...so yea black on black..btw my original post was tongue in cheek because the Guardian make it a race issue when all of this is applicable to everyone in America...I know first hand.
Harrison Engle are you seriously saying that Obama ordering drone strikes is somehow equivalent to black-on-black violence in the States? even though the person pulling the trigger could be of any race?
also, it’s unfortunate that you went through that. what the video is trying to say is that statistically speaking, black and brown kids face a lower rate of performance in school due to a lower socioeconomic standing on average. nobody is saying that ONLY black and brown kids struggle, just moreso than white kids. The fact that you don’t get this shows your lack of understanding on the issue.
Lol
