Fluffy kittens chasing a ball are beyond adorable -- but they sure aren't born that way. Practically deaf and blind, in their first few weeks they need constant warmth and milk to survive. This is a huge challenge for animal shelters, so they're working with researchers on ways to help motherless kittens flourish.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of kittens end up in animal shelters, in need of permanent homes.
But raising orphaned newborns into healthy, fluffy, frisky two-month-olds ready to be adopted requires an enormous behind-the-scenes effort. All across the country, volunteer foster parents log many sleepless nights bottle-feeding kittens every few hours. So researchers and shelters are trying to figure out ways to make it easier.
“A lot of people think fostering is taking kittens home and playing with them,” said Penny Dougherty, chief executive director of Kitten Central of Placer County, an animal shelter she runs from her house in Newcastle, California, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.
Kitten Central receives most of its kittens from Placer County Animal Services. Dougherty cares for kittens up to one month old, as well as feral and stray cats with litters. Once the kittens weigh at least two pounds and have been spayed and neutered, she returns them to the agency so they can put them up for adoption.
“They’re very happy to have our services,” said Dougherty, “because so many shelters have to euthanize.”
When the days start getting longer, around January, cats start breeding. March is the beginning of what’s known among shelters as “kitten season.” The flow of kittens doesn’t slow down until November.
“Kitten season is kind of one of the banes of shelter existence,” said Cynthia Delany, supervising shelter veterinarian at Yolo County Animal Services, in Woodland, west of Sacramento. “Six or seven months out of the year we’re just flooded with these little guys.”
To steer clear of inundating shelters with newborn kittens, Delany’s advice is to leave any litters you might encounter alone unless they’re in immediate danger. Most of the time their mom will return, she said, so check back periodically.
In an effort to lessen the load on foster parents and increase newborn kittens’ chances of survival, Mikel Maria Delgado, a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, is joining forces with Kitten Central and other animal shelters to figure out if there are optimum temperature and humidity levels that make it possible to feed newborn kittens less frequently. She has distributed incubators to the groups so that two or three kittens can be kept in each one for about three weeks.
---How long do kittens' eyes stay closed?
During the first week-and-a-half of their lives, kittens’ eyes are sealed closed and their ears are folded up, making them practically blind and deaf. They’re born this way because their brains aren’t developed enough to use those senses.

Deep Look AND kittens?! You have no idea how fast I clicked.

I'm late to the party but the way that woman smiled as she held that kitten was so heartwarming and adorable that I shed actual tears.
There's just something about those little tiny things. When my mother brought me an orphaned kitten, I ended up just crying and crying
Seriously? They have trouble finding volunteers to feed tiny, helpless, mewing kittens?
I mean, who needs therapy when you can have that? Or chocolate. Or anything really 😍
They have trouble becouse they make sure the person knows how to care for kittens that young and dosent just want a free kitten
because not everyone has a lot of free times especially every hour of feeding time for those kittens
they require round the clock care, it's a lot of work and can be very tiring. It's not for everyone.
Do not underestimate how much of a mess kittens make they literally swim in their food when they are little, they sometimes need to be cleaned several times a day. The enclosure you keep them in also needs regular cleaning. They are very cute but so messy it really is almost a fulltime job.
Rara Avis
Hahaha your profile pic!
I used to volunteer to take care of bottle baby kittens. It really wasn't hard, so I'm shocked that there aren't many volunteers. Obviously you need to feed them every few hours, but if you accidentally skip a scheduled feeding at night while you are asleep, it is okay as long as you do the next one. It's a really rewarding job!
How much is the pay?
@@dudeman7738 The kitten cuddles aren't payment enough?
@Tin Tin volunteer
Shawna Burt not when you got rent and other bills
what about sleep?
These cats have great cattitude

I volunteer at a cat shelter in Oregon, last month we had an octomom! In the first two months I helped there, we raised at least four litters of kittens, and those were just the ones we couln't find fosters for!! It is SO important people need to spay and neuter their cats!
I remember one day in 1st grade
Mom: Good morning kids the cat just gave birth
Me: wuuuuuuuuuttttttttttttt
Happened yesterday?
I commented this 2 weeks ago what do you think
You have to be at least 13 years old to have a RUclips account.
No this did not happen yesterday
Ok
It pisses me off how, despite so much work and effort, motherhood is not given its due. When I look at the animal kingdom, I am more often impressed by the work that goes into mothering newborns than other things such as hunting.
Also, god bless that woman and all the other animal shelter volunteers, and thanks Deep Look for the high quality content.
Well animals need to pass on their genes to the next generation
Because you know, evolution
Hunting is pretty extraordinary. Motherhood is only one thing about animals. It's an ignorant statement to say it's not given it's due.
My girl penny just had 5 kittens about 6 weeks ago. Watching them grow and seeing the immediate personality differences is something to witness. The King who is the biggest and not afraid of anything to the twins who stick together .
All thanks to cat mom! Good job taking care of them!
3:06 for a second I thought they were in a microwave
That's actually an incubator
*they said to take care of the cats*
They said for a *second* they thought that, and let's be real, it does look similar, and it makes sense to connect things we aren't familiar with to things we are familiar with.
Trust me. If it's a Chinese restaurant, it'll be a microwave not an incubator
@@yuckfou514 or a oven
I think its "from cute to cute!!"
100/10 cutest documentary
Anyone who hates kittens has no soul /s
Well, it can be pretty annoying to take care of them and trust me when they grow up they won't be loving you that much, like teenagers
Well, cats are teenagers their entire life: Sparse communication, like solitude, do not take interest in you, but deep down they know that they love you and you love them.
Cats will definitely love you when they grow up. They might be less codependent than dogs, but my kitty used to sleep on my chest and purrr me to sleep every night. Cats are very affectionate with the people they love, they just take time to bond with new people. Like most humans, their trust needs to be earned, but once they trust you, you'll have a friend forever.
Max Fer that's not true at all bro
So those allergic to cats have no soul?
These kittens literally make my heart melts
The cuteness. I can’t resist anymore!
You gotta be “kitten” me 😹
…right meow
This meowking me crazy 😻
XD meow
oh god.. your meowking me meowlt.. 🤤
That would be even better if it made sense in context of the video. You could've said "it's hard finding people to volunteer to look after these cute little kittens? Are you kitten me?" Just a thought. Good pun though.
Liked before finished watching because...... KITTENS FROM DEEP LOOK
Thanks!
This is the cutest Deep Look episode ever! It made me smiled so much! Thank you Deep Look for this video!
You are welcome, Remi.
YOOO I study at UC Davis! Any way I can help take care if those kittens? 😭

This Honestly Proves That Kittens Are One Of The Greatest Things On Earth
Video : "it's hard to find volunteer for the cat shelter"
Me "I VOLUNTEER"
At 0:55 the mother cat looked funny.
“Why is this hooman filming me??””
Yeah, i remember when my cat gave birth. It was a stressful 4 weeks. But now the kittens are big enough to play and eat on their own, makes it all worth it.
Finally something cute on deep look❤️
I was snuggling with my cat while watching this. I love her so much ❤️
So adorable!
Just took in 3 barn kitties. They lived a hard life. Im so blessed
They can't be clueless and cute?😅
This is it. My favorite Deep Look episode. I'm in love and so happy
3:10 It's probably not a good idea to place that incubator next to a working microwave.
Well, Isn't both of them provide heat? Then it's no problem I'd say 😂
microwave give more heat.... Kitten go there and they die
I prefer to nuke my meals when they are fresh
Rizal Ardiansyah Why warm you kittens with heat from a machine made to heat them when you can just put them in a radioactive machine for food!
only a predator would do that.

Cats can be nice. Many cat breeds have a different *character and personality.*
There are very wild cats. There are very social and passive cats too. It's a curious animal that is very successful on our planet.
So cute! I love this Deep Look!!!
i just fell in love with cats and kittens even more
Nurturing orphaned and other foster kittens for my local animal shelter was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences I've had. That being said, it takes A LOT of effort. You really do need to feed them every 4 hours, all day and night. If you have a sick or weak kitten, especially one that is reluctant or difficult to feed, it can be really challenging emotionally.
Deep Look with kittens?! I clicked so fast I think I broke the sound barrier!
2:15 ‘High-functioning’ cat lady
this is sooo cute!!😍 i have a cat thats 5 years old and she kinda does things on her own but we still help her on stuff like the food and cleaning the poop so yea at least i know this now 😃
