The most stupid thing is that even a 12y/o student commit sucide for getting low marks!!!!🤦(not fail mark).
That's the worst than any other country in the world!!!!.The education system here is a million time worser than that of the u.s. here we have 10hr class with only a hour break less and daily tests!!! I'm a french high school student. France is known to have the longest schooldays of all Europe. I personally have 9 hours per day, I start at 8 and finish at 18 with 1 hour brake for lunch. Obviously, clubs don't exist and we have 2 to 3hr of homework per night. Lost of french students criticize this system but nothing has been done. We must change things because more and more students have burnouts and depression.

Just finished my final year of high school in France. I had class from 8am to 6pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 8am to 8pm on Thursdays and from 8am to 3pm on Fridays. I also had class on Wednesdays but just in the morning (8am-12am). Some days look like they are very long (which they are) but I usually had a 3 hour break just before or after lunch break that I used to do my homework for the afternoon.
I had longer days at school but also had more time to do my homework in a proper work environment. I could complain about ending late, having to take a long train ride back home but I honestly feel like I had it easy.
With the new French baccalaureate you can choose your “specialities” (main classes). Normally during your final year in high school you should have a 2 hour break plus a 1 hour lunch break three times a week thanks to this new system of specialities. The real dealbreaker are “options”, extra classes that you have to sign up for the whole year but aren’t obligatory. I took the option expert maths which added another three hours of math from 5pm to 6pm on Thursdays to my already existing 2 hours of maths in the morning. Other options such as Greek and Latin have class hours during lunch hours so you only have 20 minutes to eat.
That all sounds ridiculous but it’s not obligatory so really you can control your timetable by choosing the correct options.
Then again it all depends on your school.

Schools were created (at least in America) in the time when people needed to be trained to work in factories, and schools really haven't changed. This made it so that schools have focused on having obedient people who listen and can work for long amounts of time, while in the modern world, people need creative, communicative people.
Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @cowsongs

The modern world needs people who are creative, communicative, AND can also focus, work, and listen for long periods of time. The "obedient" part has softened a little, but the rest still remains. People who are creative, but can't focus for long periods and listen, don't really succeed except in maybe a few odd cases like artists or musicians.

I think teachers fail to realize that we are lacking because of excess work that causes too much stress for us. Increasing work is just adding more stress. More work = more stress. More work = more homework. More stress = less quality. Less quality = bad grades. Bad grades = bad habits. Bad habits = a bad life. Trying to push these things on 4th grades is actually mental considering people in other countries feel our stress once they are in college.

I was a good student who did their homework immediately after school was over. I did every homework assigned and was careful with my work. Around sophomore year, I began to become stress with the increase amount of work I had to do ( Took ap world history to gain some college credit, it was fairly common to take an ap class in my school). Junior was the worse as there was increase in ap classes (one was 0 period). By senior year, I was burn out and often sleep deprived (most of my friends and peers often sleep 4-6 hours a day). The way highschool system are seted up and scheduled makes it a lot harder to concentrate on these classes. The ap classes I passed weren't an easy breeze, there was a lot of homework, studying, test, additional after school help to pass some of them. In college, it is so much easier to deal with. Yes you have to put in the work, but you choose your schedule. Classes are often longer than 1 hr, which helps your overall performance in class due to spending more time with it in one session instead of per day. Less homework, more lectures and time to study. You get more break (no wasted time and restriction to be at school). I now have less stressed and I'm better at taking in the materials. Last year I was in honors math and I was so flipping stressed. My then math teacher had a lot of honors math students but only like 23 got in honors math this year, and that’s a major downgrade. So, shout out to my current math teacher cause she’s awesome

My school here in the philippines starts at 7:30am so students would usually go to school early like 6 to 7:29am then the time our school ends is 3 o'clock but every friday we leave school at 4 o'clock for our clubs. It is really stressful because we have to do many assignments and PTs. However, this online class, our school was generous enough to give us a much better schedule but the down side is that we have too many assignments and PTs that we can't handle.

The ‘learning’ in my school (US) is incredibly inefficient. For example people immersed in a foreign language can become fluent in a month or two, but I took Spanish for 3 years and nobody in our class could actually converse with a native speaker. There is no incentive for classes to teach the material in an time efficient way. The vast majority of the time in school for me is spent literally sitting and waiting, or doing monotonous tasks that don’t contribute to learning at all.

In Russia -and other countries once part of the Soviet Union-, they do way more homework, almost one for every subject every day, and they don't have some of the breaks we have. If I remember correctly, they don't have one for Halloween, November, -not completely sure about this one- Easter and whatnot. They have ones for Christmas though.
So while yes, this sounds appealing at first, she you consider all those things above, maybe 6 weeks is better.

Not to mention we had breaks basically every 45 minutes like this (it's class number and appx. time/schedule):
      0 - 7:10am to 7:55am
      1 - 8am to 8:45am
      2 - 8:55am to 9:40am

      7 - 2pm to 2:45pm
8 - 2:50pm to 3:35pm - though this was was super rare to have and was more used to substitute other classes if they weren't taught/were skipped for any reason.

the worst part about school is that if we pushed the start time back it would probably also push the end time back just as much causing us to have school, go home, do homework, and go to bed without even finishing your homework if you want 8 hours of sleep

From Germany: My school never ended at 1pm after 4th grade (Grundschule). Normally I was done by 4 pm, but it depended on my choice of classes. Sometimes I was in school until 5:30 pm. Start was at 8 am. At 1 pm there was an hour break for lunch. Between every 90min class were 15 min break to switch the rooms and go to the toilet. We didn´t go that much homework (30 min on average), but we had quite a lot of projects and presentations to complete at home.

In my NYC middle school, my schedule is: 6:55: wake up
7:00: be done 7:05: get my dog out 7:20:walk to bus stop
7:27: get on bus. 7:42: arrive at school 8:00: be let in. 8:00-8:17: get to homeroom.
8:20-9:02: 1st period, 9:05-9:47 is 2nd period, 9:50-10:32 is 3rd period, 10:35-11:17 is lunch, though we only have 20 minutes to eat.
11:17-12:02:5th period 12:02-12:47:6th period 12:47-1:32: 7th period or “talent period” as most of my talent classes happened in that period.
1:35-2:20 is 8th period and dismissal time. And most periods felt way longer than it must.

When I was in high school (3 years ago) we went for almost 8 hours with minimal breaks and less than an hour lunch. I then had 4-5 hours of homework. I live in Texas. It was a horrible experience. I will say, though, I got to University and it’s so easy. Time management skills are ingrained. But with that being said, I had issues at home in high school and that combined with working and school made me a zombie - I don’t even remember much from those 4 years.

I am in my second year of high school and I am trying to get a good experience out of it, but at times it does not work out. I live in Texas as well and my school is like yours: Go to school for 8hrs, only having a 33min (12:35pm-1:09pm) lunch, but I am in Yearbook club so I don't eat lunch during my lunch period; I actually eat (if I even feel hungry) my next period (7th). We only have a 5min break in between classes but that's just me hurrying to my class since they do tardy sweeps time to time (which means after the tardy bell rings all teachers are required to lock their doors and to not let any students inside of their classroom), whoever is caught in the halls during one gets Saturday School. It does get extremely tiring and stressful especially if you want good grades, I am a program already to get me ready for college and took my PSAT last year and this year to get ready for the actual SAT. I am getting myself ready also for the ACT, and will most likely be taking dual credit classes next year to fulfill college classes since that is my goal. After all of that, I have never slept in class as much as I have this year only because of the pressure I put on myself. With the long hours of class time, minimal breaks, and no time to proper eat, I feel like school is draining my body, but I push through it even when it hurts to the part when I feel like giving up.

in australia, we start our school year in late January/early February. most schools start at around 8-8;30 in the morning and finish at around 2:30-3 and we have to bring our lunch and recess to school. we do this all year round with a 2 week break in April, July and September. we finish the year with a six week break in december to january. this is for all school grades from Kindergarten to Year 12.

My school moved to a 4 class day with hour and a half long classes, and we switch out the topics every day. So on Day 1 I have Economics, Forensics, then lunch, then algebra, then advisor (basically just a 30 minute break) then study hall. On day 2 I have intro. Physics, comp1, strength and conditioning, then lunch, then advisor, then Spanish 2.
    I love it.

Here in the Philippines, a typical high school student wakes up at 4 or 5 am, prepares at 6 am, starts classes at 7:30 am, 15 minutes break and end the class at 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm. When there is an upcoming event, we prepare at school so usually we go home at 8 pm. Then after, we do the chores and study for about 4 to 6 hours only to get half of our desired score the next morning.
I am so used to it that I didn't even realize how I traded my life for 90+ grades. Too young to be too stressed. 😭

I don’t care about how long a school day is... I just wish all the teachers were competent. I’m failing Latin because the teacher doesn’t prepare us for tests and barely teaches things, going over them once, very briefly, then going back to reading through the book. He’d teach better if he dissected the things we’re learning, rather than expecting us to understand fully something talked about a little in the books in Latin. At least the stories are entertaining- there was one story about Grumiō, a chef who works in a banker’s house, who was drunk and when he came home saw a painter decorating a wall with a painting of a lion and ran into the kitchen freaking out and warning the banker’s son about the big lion in the atrium.

I thought the current, long school day was for the babysitting of the children, because so many households have only one parent caring for the child; and that parent has to earn a paycheck to be able to pay for food, rent/mortgage, clothing, etc. That the children actually learn enough, in the public school indoctrination warehouses, to be wise, is a myth.

my class starts at 8:20 but my school has breakfast so everyone goes there from 7:30 to 7:45 AM. And then class ends at 3 PM, except some students have afterschool programs or detention, so students usually get home at 5 PM. It honestly depends on how long you have detention for or your afterschool program. Every afterschool program is at least two hours long, depending on what type of program it is, sometimes it could be 1 hour. For instance, I go to choir and band, meaning I have one hour after school for choir, and then one hour after school for band. Sometimes I go in the middle of the day but I like going after class, makes me feel like I can actually relax for once and do something i actually love. Bussing students go early, so sometimes I go on the bus, meaning I get out at 2:30 PM. But those are on days that I don’t have afterschool programs
i’m in middle school by the way, but my school goes from K through 8 so everyone has the same schedule.
it’s also very bad on snow days and for kids who have to walk home. This wasn’t in my school but one day when it was snowing really bad, some students from another school got home at 11 PM. It was really bad

  • @renegadedrummer2859

It wasn’t bad when I went to high school other than having to get up at 5am. School started at 7:30am, but we only had four blocks (classes) and each would last and hour and a half. We were out at 2:47pm and rarely had homework b/c we done it all in class. If we did have homework, sophomores, juniors, and seniors would use their hour long lunch break to do it.
