- The fourth round of the Ultimate Karting Championship arrives at Glan Y Gors in Wales. A track I've only been to twice before but those times were in Club 100, so I'd have a lot to learn. Perhaps more pressing than that was the switch from X30 over to Senior Rotax.

Love your karting content. May I ask what chassis are you driving at the moment? Looks like Kart Republic? Surprising to see move from x30 and feeling physically challenged. Does it mean that Rotax has been pushing driver's physical side harder? They are quite comparable on acceleration/deceleration so must be comparable G forces?

If we can get Steve to come across the pond, we can put him in our version of DTM. I mean, surely making an initialism of Dirt Track Modified gives him some automatic experience, right? There's no possible way the two classes have any difference in driving style, performance, or overall feel. I'm convinced of it....

I used to race for like 10 years. I have experience both in rotax and x30. Unfortunately had to quit last season. But watching these videos always kinda takes me back :D. And good video as always!
What would you say is quicker between rotax and X30? I’ve heard they’re very similar when it comes to acceleration and top end but the X30 has more bottom end torque?
@@hwt9075 Rotax accelerates better out of corners and x30 got a better top end.
Usually Rotax lap times are slightly better. Atleast in senior classes.

A thing that helped me with corner exit in low speed which will help you is blipping the throttle when you brake which keeps the revs higher which gives you better acceleration out the corners

Always my favourite time of the month when I sit down at my laptop, and get to watch a video filled with shadow realm entries and executive meetings with Barry R.
I can't comment from experience about the particular curb that you mentioned having to 'launch'.
But during my karting days, many many years ago now, (over 30 years in fact). I pretty much tended to follow the school of thought that it was usually best to try and stay off the kerbs in the wet, especially if they were painted, as they can very often be pretty low grip and slippery.
Also, if you do happen to launch the kart over a kerb then when the tyres regain contact with the wet tarmac, it's quite common for them to spin up and cause you to loose traction. Especially if you just happen to be accelerating very hard when you become airborne off the kerb.
Obviously, I'm in no way attempting to imply that this is the set in stone golden rule as I'm fully aware that you have to treat every curb individually in itself.
In the dry, it's absolutely a totally different kettle of fish.
And as such, I'm the first one to see just how much it's possible to straighten out a corner by using the absolute most ludicrous amount of kerb that is possible. To the extent that I rapidly lost count of just how many Tillet seat bottoms that I completely destroyed in next to no time at all by using the kerbs as my very own personal take off ramps. 😂😂😂😂
I would love to see you in one of those Lotus/caterham 7 race series :) they look like fun, they keep the prices down, and you're not immediately at a disadvantage for every kg you are over your opponents :P

I'm a kart mechanic in Mooresville NC. It's nice to use this commentary to show young drivers race strategy.
Couple questions if you please Steve. Concerning your neck pain. Are you allowed to have any type of support for your neck like a neck pillow used on flights or maybe some type of a bungee system connecting the helmet to your shoulders slowing the initial force? Maybe even a Hahns device. And lastly have you or will you focus on strengthening your neck muscles? Steve you are an inspiration to us all and very grateful that your kind enough to share this journey in karting with us.

The way that first guy spun in the race looked like it was straight out of Mario Kart lol. He must've found a banana peel on the track!
I have the same thing when I'm karting with having a very good first lap but then it all taking apart. I think it's to do with being over the weight limit. With being able to have good grip on colder tyres but when they heat up the light guys get up to speed.

2 things Steve.
1. I would love for you to explain a bit more in detail how the championship works (points, race format etc), also, how do the categories work? Is rotax below X30? Why are there so many more drivers in Rotax? Is it much cheaper to drive, maintain or Race?
2. If your pace isnt worsening over the weekend while everyone else is, tells me your not on the limit of the tires in the early races, which is to be expected since it was your first race :)

After watching this, Rotax seems like the BTCC of Karting. I wouldn't be surprised to see an "I'm going for first, he says!" moment.

Tip: When its pissing down try a pair of neoprene diving gloves. They stay warmer and drier than a set of cloth gloves.
I see you sporting a tinted/smoked visor, and I don't know what is availeable to your helmet, but I find that mirror/chromed visors give me even better vision in pretty much all riding condions, and it relaxes my eyes a bit more than all clear ones or plain tinted ones, which reduces the mental fatigue of having to use your eyes as intensily as you have to do in racing or in heavy traffic and so on. My experience is solely from riding motorcycle in great sunny weather to pissing rain, and I do not in any way assume to know better, just throwing my thought out there for you to have a glance at:P

Hey Steve, just noticed in your video that you don’t have a rib protector, in my opinion it helps out a lot, helps to reduce the pain around body and ribs, not even in crashes, just with driving in general especially at physical tracks like Whilton. Just letting you know and recommending that you get one, and great series!

I use a Tillett P1. Would recommend.
If anyone wants to drive this track, DO IT! It’s incredible. They do arrive and drive sessions that are well priced and unlike other outdoor tracks, the fun doesn’t stop when it rains! They send you out on slicks! The most fun I’ve ever had in a kart was on this track!
Do they do rental or is it bring your own kart? Not that it really matters to me because im on the other side of the world
@@mursie they do rental, no need to book. Just arrive and drive, although pretty sure you can book in advance if it’s busy, etc. If you ever come to this part of the world you have to give it a go! Especially if it’s light rain 😉

@@jordanhennessey9882 I actually race rotax and through a season of club racing for me and my family is £12,000 when you consider tires, fuel and repairs (cos people have a tendancy to send you to the shaddow relm) so pls sponsor me we can barely afford it 😂

Depends on a lot of things. With the team Steve is currently with,if he’s hiring engine it’s probably around £700 a weekend. Then add on the tyres and fuel and repairs and it’s probably around £1000 a weekend,however like someone here said you don’t have to spend anywhere near that much,so don’t take what Steve likely spends as an example. It’s probably around £10000 a season if your on a budget.
You failed to explain what the difference was between the two carts, x30 and rotax
Mostly the same on pace different tires and engine they both have around the same amount of power but x30s are slightly faster

yeah I'd imagine that being a bit heavier in the wet helps prevent sliding, but I don't know at all so I'll just imagine it and pretend it works that way in my good dreams.

I think Rotax Senior is the class I'd drive if I got back into racing nationally. So much competition there. Unfortunately I'm too heavy :) still 100kg(120kg a year ago). Need to get down to at least 85kg to be competitive. I had a disease that required me to take medicine that made you gain so much weight for a few years.
