Look at the exit not the apex, you will be able to judge braking and entry speed better, you will also have a smoother line without twitching on the wheel so much. Twitchy steering in the corner is fine in club 100 because the grip is lower anyway, if you're sliding and having to adjust your line mid corner in x30 you can't carry speed and put the power down early, its why you're getting dropped on the corner exit. Keeping your eyes on the exit and looking across the apex will improve your judgement no matter what you're driving in.
This. The twitchy steering is fine on early laps when the tires are cold, but once they're up to temps you're just increasing resistance and scrubbing away speed.
Purely speculation but I wonder if physically training with the equivalent of a resistance steering wheel would help wrestle the wheel to a smoother corner more easily and consistently
So much this. Actually, I always recommend looking at the next apex before you even get to the first apex. Basically once you get on the brakes, look for the apex of the NEXT corner. Sounds weird but your peripheral vision and subconscious knows what to do, you need to give it info on the next corner while your still in the first one. Takes some time and practice but you will get so much smoother and quicker once you start to get it. I also wonder if he needs a setup change. Seems to have a lot of mid corner understeer through the slower corners but that could all be driver induced. Still, might be worth a try.
@@wingracer1614 DHR should be able to set up the kart for Steve. Or maybe Steve needs some help to explain how the kart is behaving to get it set up properly. As you say there is too much movement of the steering wheel preventing from getting on the accelerator early enough
At 2:30 kart was bouncing because you have too much grip. You gotta take camber out. I’ve been karting for 11 years and the most important aspect is communicating the gearing and handling of the kart to your mechanic so he can adjust the setup.
I noticed your steering inputs when I first watched your karting videos. I know you don't know the track and are trying to throw the car around, but you need to focus on being smooth. Learning to be smooth will increase your times in the beginning, but constant arcs have much less tire scrubbing. Once you smooth out your inputs and combine that with learning the tracks your times will improve. You will always not have to work so hard in the corners and will reduce all those reactionary muscle movements which dramatically increase fatigue. Smooth is fast. Smooth is fast. Smooth is fast. Pick one corner to try a smoother entry and perfect that corner. Trust your equipment. Then do another corner. You have talent - your positions are very consistent not because you are slow, but because you have a gap in your technique that is draining speed. Improve your talent by improving your technique. You got this!
Sure. And he has a lot of Club 100 experience (as he said), so he's probably struggling a little with much more corner capabilities and power. It seems to me that these karts have to be driven into and out of the corners with the pedals. The fast drivers manage to rotate the Kart with braking and throttle in a very precise way. Of course it is true to racing cars in general, but in karting you can explore it even more. 🤔
yep, saw the same, basicly, exept when overtaking or defending the line, almost every time steering into a corner is just a small moment too late, what results in struggeling through every corner, maybe try to be a little bit more agressive entering a corner, without being mad :)
very true-he is to agressive on the wheel which scrubs his speed, also he isnt braking enough- using the tires to slow him down and not the pedal- but he is doing great
When you go into the slower corners and feel like you loose a little bit of time throughout the hole confer it means you might be braking a tiny bit early and not holding the brakes hard enough into the apex. This is because when these tires are under a lot of load they really like to grip up and come off the corner nicely so you go in harder and you still get a nice exit out.
Yeah exactly, could try trail braking more into slower corners since the front tyres will grip more as you put the load on them, once you’ve got the apex pinned you can get off the brakes and get that exit. Trail braking also means you can brake later as you said, just have to be careful not to slow down too much on the apex (p.s. I’m not a racing driver I don’t know what I’m talking about).
27:39 He also does something that it looked like all the guys smoking past you around tighter turns were doing all weekend: he preloads the outside wheels into the turn
It almost looks like you have too much grip. On the slower corners it looks like the kart is hopping/bouncing and like you said you were off on lap times. Both of those would indicate too much grip. Its most noticeable on your last lap on the last race.
The side by side video with you and Fleming really accentuates the issues with your hands. His slow roll in with the wheel keeps the rear inside tire up off the ground and better loads the outside tires, because you open your hands up multiple times you drop the inside tire which lands heavily and forces a slide. To start you could try turning in earlier just to keep the wheel in it, whenever you turned in slightly slower and earlier but still committed to power you’d lose slightly less to the karts around you. You’re doing awesome and it’s great to watch your progress! Keep at it.
These videos are great Steve! I love to see what is your thought process like when facing new challenges, like a new track. It's very interesting to see that, even after years of experience, you can still learning new things and even feel like a newb sometimes. I feel like watching a legend in the making.
I absolutely love watching these videos, really throws me back into my racing days as a kid. It's crazy how much I miss the race weekends at these tracks with a bunch of mates. No better way to spend your childhood. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories
Hi SuperGT, viewer here. I know you were disappointed at how you did here.. but one thing you taught me about racing is to not get discouraged by comparing yourself with the faster drivers. it really helped me to stop thinking, "why am I not fast like these guys?" Your "How to get fast at GTS" video also really helped. thanks to you, I slowly but surely improved my times, put in the practice, and now I can compete with the A rated drivers in GTS (i'm on the cusp of A rating myself :D). So I guess my point is.. thank you. thank you for showing your struggles in overcoming challenges. it's part of racing and part of improving on yourself. The end result will be you smashing those "pros" in the future races! Cheers mate!
Hi Steve, i think the biggest thing you missed in the side by side with Tom, apart from smoothness, is that in the heavy breaking areas Tom brakes, loads the outside tyres up and steers in the opposite direction to the corner which sharpens the tragectory into the corner as the rear has drifted. This allows him to accelerate earlier and drive out of the corner staighter and therefore quicker.
Funny that you mentioned karting in UKF being similar to sim racing ("just try to make a good lap on an unfamiliar track with unfamiliar car") because this pretty much sums up my experience in Round 3 of the LATESHIFT competition yesterday.
You got it Steve!!! Keep practicing. That's racing for ya. You win some; you loose some. You are improving and that's what matters Keep it up. Love seeing these videos.
Try the round brown bar for the front and a short 1000mm HH axle, it'll help with the front tyres lasting gives more front bite and the axle will help off corners
In the comparison between you and tom, when u said that tom’s steering motion is smooth, i noticed that you were fighting oversteer and having to correct quite a lot in your kart. Did u set up ur kart to have a bit more oversteer?
Its nice to see kart driver give you space. So many times I've had expensive bills to pay due to guys leaving space and then driving across me, or throwing it inside and taking me out when there wasn't room (once had a guy fully take to the grass a fast right left and t bone me on the final lap)
I’m honestly surprised by how close you are this early on to be honest. It has taken me a solid 2 years to get on the pace in karting. You’ve been doing it for like a month now and already where I was after a whole year. Love the content and keep grinding you’ll be there before you know it.
Enjoying seeing you improve at every race. At every corner I was wishing you'd went smoother and straighter on the wheel. Good Job Steve, you're going to be great one day.

The fact that on a weekend where you are at a track you don't know, you managed to catch up and over take some other karters, you finish where you started in the final and you still get frustrated and annoyed at your performance means you have the correct attitude for any racing. Like you said, you are catching them already, next race you will be with them for sure.
Idk how accurate the physics are on it, but there's a Kart sim called KartKraft that might be able to help with some of the tracks you go to this season.
@@Bigtmac_ Yup. Which is why I said that it might help him with some of the tracks he goes to this season. There's not a sim on the planet that's gonna get you completely up to speed at a new track without having some real life laps there, but at least getting comfortable with the layout of the track will get rid of some of the warmup time at the beginning of practice, leading to more time seriously driving your lap times down.
With the physicality needed to drive these, do you have a regular workout routine that you do during the week? I can't help but think that a regular aerobic routine like cycling or rowing might be good to help build up the stamina.

Mate, I’d say there’s 2 things you need to look at. First is kart setup. I’d say your team should be sorting out some of the issues you seem to have in the videos. You seem to have a lot more snap oversteer than the rest, especially on turn in. All the guys towards the back of the field had this problem. This is killing your time. I do agree though that you really need to attack the brakes much harder from the off, then trail into the corner. I bet your apex speed is very close to the rest but the kart won’t let you turn in!
i'd love to see you commentate a lap from the kart like Russel did at Mugello last year, would be awesome to see how you analyse a new track when you arrive and jump in the kart.
this is probably the best advertising for karting that has been ever done. cause all this rental karting and stuff is nice and fun, but racing karts are something different to race and especially to watch aswell. Defenetly a really neded thing for our sport.

Hey Steve!! Seeing your driving I see (maybe) one small problem, and I don’t drive seniors but could you maybe try to brake a bit later and harder into tight corners as It would give you more grip on the exit and you could get on the power earlier. I drive Juniors so maybe in seniors it doesn’t apply and maybe it is different in UK tracks (I live in Spain).
Hello, Steve. Greetings from Brazil. As always a very good content (despite turning off your gopro kkkkkk). Gontratulations for your go kart journey! Keep it going! And I would like just to remind you that we are missing your GT Sport content!
Curious about what you do when you arrive at a new track, is there a game plan for the days following up to the race? Do you look at specific corners or just go as hard as you can?
I heard a crazy trick a local go kart driver does to maintain higher speed and that was by riding his breaks. He would run threw the brakes but proved to be quicker

Driving Options / turn cone markers off.
Should help with those cones there. They're OP 😁
I heard a crazy trick a local go kart driver does to maintain higher speed and that was by riding his breaks. He would run threw the brakes but proved to be quicker
Great show. May I ask, wouldn't hotter tiers make for better grip ? It makes sense if the other people are gaining when their tiers would be hot as well.
This is now one of my wish list go kart tracks
2:30 if the kart bounces it means you have too much grip. You might want to stiffen up the front/rear, depending on which part has too much grip.
"I'm right on the apex of the first corner.
For the first time this weekend"
I think is what you intended xD
Nice T shirt, Alex Albon 23, nice haha
Just wondering why you run Kart Republic bodywork on an OTK kart?
Rowrah is great. I was the TKM champ back in 2004. Really miss competitive motorsport
Just went to Rowrah 1 week late!! My friends got to meet you and even took your back bumper haha
