  • Get your gloves, some alcohol, and a ton of patience.
So here is a process that sucks no matter how you approach it! Removing the battery from your Retina Macbook Pro. These are delicate machines so be extra careful while doing this - which after watching the video sounds funny. You have to saw back and forth behind the battery cells, individually, with heavy string or twine dipped in 99% iso. Apologies for this one being a bit more instructional vs entertaining. We try to do it all over here.
That said, this is something you can do at home with very little cost beyond the new battery! A new battery is about $120 Canadian, and you can install it using materials easily found around home or at the drugstore.
Thanks again to the dogs and cats of the world.

I've done this three times on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro (which I'm typing on right now). The first two batteries were duds and by the time I put the third one in a few months ago, I had the whole process down to twenty minutes. Tragic, really.
The string is definitely a good shout.

Three times?! I am so sorry to hear that lol. The string really works, just be sure it's heavy-ish duty. Mine still split a few times in the process.

@@CanadianComputerCollector Yeah. Ordered a battery, changed it out. That was a dud. Got a replacement of that. A few months later, that one failed too so I had to change it a third time. So far, it seems to be working!
I relied on solvent and quick wits but the string is a much better idea...

Hi. i purchased a battery from eBay. After i replaced it, i notice that the Laptop is slower. Where can i buy a good quality replacement battery?

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Год назад +1

Sorry I wouldn't be able to recommend a place to buy from. Best I can recommend is to look for multiple reviews from independent reviewers before deciding on a place to buy from.
If possible, save up your money and look for one with an m1 they're incredibly powerful and efficient on battery. On the used market they're becoming a very compelling value.

Why all the hate for this poor Macbook? This was my primary daily driver for about 5 years and it served well. It didn't run hot unless you engaged the nVidia GPU, which I never much touched.
The string and gloves approach was key for my battery replacement, thanks. I didn't even try the glue solvent that came with the kit, just pulled hard on the string and used the solvent for cleanup.

The gate was really for the graphic performance which unfortunately were key to my use case. That said, I use a 13” 2013 for all my writing nowadays but it can’t even run Minecraft without hitting 100c. I wanted more from this thing but just couldn’t get it! It’s a great daily task master tho.

2013 15in Retina Macbook Pro, same battery as you. Local ifixit place wants $149 for the battery replacement, including tax/labor etc. Seems like these batteries are at least $70, and this job looks like a fukking nightmare, even without the cat, lol. Maybe worth it to just pay $149, esp since I haven't done it before. What say u ?

    • @CanadianComputerCollector

Worth it if you can afford it. You're correct it's a real hassle

@@CanadianComputerCollector I ended up getting a kit from OWC for about $85m and used an automotive spudger, normally used to remove door panels, interior trim. With no alcohol etc, I got the old battery out in 15, no joke! New one went right in and fired up at 65% and only 1 cycle count on it, as seen with Coconut app. It is a night & day difference without the bloated battery. The trackpad and keyboard feel brand new and I can click & drag again! Totally worth the the cost of the kit and in less than 45min the whole job was complete, including wiping down everything and cleanup!
