Sir, I can't thank you enough for this very clear walk-through of the process from end to end. I took my MacBook Pro 15, Late 2013 in to the Apple store in late December 2022 and was prepared to pay them $200 to replace the battery. The machine was crashing frequently and when I took it off the charger, the battery level would go from 100% to 70% in about 5 minutes and then crash. Apple told me that the machine is so old, they don't offer replacement batteries anymore. I was going to take it to a 3rd party fixit place (GoEBITS) but then I came across your video. (Isn't RUclips the most wonderful thing?!) I took your advice and bought the battery kit from IFIXIT for $90. I noticed they also offered replacement plastic feet, so I bought a set of those too (3 of mine had fallen off). It took me about 90 minutes total to replace the battery and the feet and now my computer has a new lease on life! (And I feel so accomplished -- I'm a computer repairman!) Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Excellent video! I just completed the change out of my old swollen battery on my 2013 Macbook. It now sits flat again and my track pad works. Very pleased and thank you for eliminating all those unnecessary steps. Very thankful for your video!!!!!

For everyone watching don't remove the tape on top from the new battery until after you glue it and line it up! makes the process easier to line up the new battery.

Fed, thanks so much for this tutorial. I completely agree there is more risk to taking out all the internal components as recommended by iFixit so I was very pleased to see, and then use, your approach. I used isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue, which I'm fairly sure was not nearly as effective as using the adhesive solvent, so the process took a bit longer and was more tedious than I'd hoped. But nonetheless all went well and I have a new battery in my 2012 Macbook Pro, giving it another few years at least. Thanks again Fed and @puromac!
Thanks for the tutorial. Followed it for replacing the battery in my Macbook pro and went pretty well although took quite some time as the middle two batteries really seemed quite stuck. You just saved me £120
Thanks for this great video. I held off for more than a year on replacing my battery after looking at the enormously complicated ifixit guide but with this video it was all over in less than an hour and I didn't even need glue remover (I used nylon string).
Just wanted to say thank you for posting this guide - it prompted me to take on my early 2013 MacBook Pro whose battery was on its last legs. I ordered the kit from the European iFixit store (big up to them for delivering in two days to the UK from Germany - great service). The kit was fantastic and literally has everything you need.
The only hiccup I had was that there is a base plate (shown in your video) which protects the touchpad and I accidentally removed mine as my nylon string went behind that instead of the battery. Absolutely no biggie as it stuck back down nicely and the job is done - took around an hour of careful labour using your string/twine method.

Thank you! I followed this video and was able to change the batteries. I bought the batteries from iFixit. This is really good video! I found using thread more difficult than what is being shown on the video. The last part of cleaning up was a bit tedious and I had to use scrapper to clean it up.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve been putting off replacing the batteries in two of my MacBooks for ages. After watching your video, I’m far more comfortable attempting it with using your technique than others I’ve seen.
Really good steps to do. I didn’t have the adhesive remove (which would have been easier) but I still managed to do it with the nylon thread but needed gloves as it was harder work to get the old battery out.
Make sure you have the right screwdrivers as well.

I watched several videos on this and yours was by far the most helpful. Thank you so much for making this. When I took the case off, there was a lot of dust in the computer. I used compressed air to carefully clean all of that out. Got the battery and kit from iFixit. Used a guitar string and a pair of gloves, which made the battery removal pretty simple (still used the chemicals that came with the kit). Got the whole job done in 40 minutes. Mac is now back up and running and in excellent condition. Saved a lot of money and multiple days of down time from what Apple quoted me and learned a lot in the process. Thank you!!
Great tutorial. Just replaced my battery following it (no issues at all), the string technique is what made it a lot easier, just have to be patient for the adhesive remover to do its work.
Great guide, thanks. I also ordered the iFixit kit and followed a similar technique to yours but used dental floss and no adhesive remover. My kit did not have a syringe but a bottle with a tapered tip which made it difficult to apply in the way you did, but using a sawing action the battery cells came out without too much trouble.
TY. I watched this vid a month ago and it gave me confidence to order & attempt. I never would have for something with 50+ steps. I just got the battery today, watched it again, and successfully removed & replaced the battery.

Awesome! I used this video to successfully replace the same iFixit battery in my MBP late 2013 15". The battery was still holding a charge but had expanded so much it would not sit flat and the trackpad was unusable. Now it works great. Using the kit plus the idea of the string was brilliant. This video is how "how to" videos should be made. Thank you for sharing!

Excellent instructions. I used nail polish remover and gift wrap curling ribbon and used gloves to exercise additional force on the ribbon without hurting my hand. Worked perfectly. Thanks.
Thank you...I quite enjoyed your method/explanation on this! I'm getting some kind of overheating issue, or it feels hot on my lap these days, but there is really no battery swelling to date, so I'll have to check to make sure my fans are operational! I'd not heard of Ifixit, so I'll definitely look into this! I did upgrade my SSD drive via 'Macsales' using the Aura 1 TB SSD two years ago, and it's worked flawlessly, and my previous 512 SSD is now an external drive! I love being able to DIY and will again watch this video prior to changing my battery when the time comes! Appreciate you doing this video for us!

Thank you for uploading and sharing. Because of you I attempted and successfully removed the old bloated battery. I will try and upload a reply video for others to reference (I’m not really a youtube content creator, so that might never happen). My battery was a fair bit more swollen but it all worked out. In Canada, ifixit does not provide the adhesive remover. I suspect they can’t import it and nothing local exists. The sawing nylon string method worked without any use of adhesive remover. I will say it wasn’t as smooth a process, but I was able to safely remove it with minimal off-gasing.

Thanks so much for this video! First repair I ever did, and this video on the background helped me through. For anyone else trying this in the future: I found the dispenser of the adhesive remover a bit unpredictable. So I just used a double thread of dental floss, and with the sawing movement I did not have to use any iFixit adhesive remover to remove the batteries.

Just changed my wife's MacBook Pro battery using your tutorial. Excellent work. The hardest parts: getting the adhesive off (ended up using a razor blade, very carefully) and aligning the two battery screws on either side of the connector (I didn't, and didn't put them back. The laptop is pretty much a desktop and won't be jostled too much, so I'm hoping that won't be an issue. Besides, the battery is solidly stuck in place now and won't move.) Kudos to iFixit for their excellent kit. I love that it came with all the tools.
Used this and worked great; placing the MB on a little angle and using the cord are neat tricks!
Great video. Thank you. I purchased the iFixit kit as well. I used 80 lb test braided fishing line instead of string and I did not need to use the solvent to remove the batteries.

Good tutorial. One of my only extra bits of advice would be to not squirt the adhesive remover directly onto the plate covering the trackpad (squirt it onto the cloth instead), since some of it might leak around the edges of the plate and get to the workings inside the trackpad, where it might do some damage if there are any parts that are sensitive to acetone. Even if the acetone doesn't damage the trackpad, it could continue flowing downward until it leaks past the edges of the trackpad itself and drip onto the display, which of course has a clear plastic front, where acetone could indeed do some damage. Just to be certain, it's a good idea, before you start applying the adhesive remover, to insert something impervious to acetone and other fluids between the display and the keyboard/palmrest/trackpad, like maybe a sheet of aluminum foil.

That happened to me. It flow through the screen and stayed there for a while until I noticed. It damanged the black finish the LCD has... So be careful with adhesive remover.
May be worth putting a hand towel or such between the case and the display, since others have mentioned the risk of getting alcohol.acetone on the display and ruining it.
how would you get the cloth you squirted remover on, to glue under batteries?
Just replaced it according to you advice! It is now the second time, since I got my MacBook in Feb 2013, that my batteries were bloating to an extend, where the trackpad wouldn’t work properly anymore. The first repair was within my Apple Protection plan and the repair was claimed to have normally cost me 980$ , so I was glad I had the protection plan. This second repair was done by myself. Spent 59€ ( about 67$) for the battery pack and less than 30 minutes following your advice. I was initially shocked when I reviewed the iFixit procedure on their website/ repair manual, since it was marked as very difficult, was long ( 50+ steps!!)and with its own adherent danger ( just for the sake of preventing solvent damage. ) My extremely bloated old batteries turned out to be removed with surprising ease , utilizing a bit dental floss and a plastic spur. Fantastic video. Totally worth watching this and skipping the more complicated steps. I regretted not buying the ifixit battery but already bought a replacement kit without the tools or adhesive remover. For those in my shoes, you can use Goo Gone instead of the ifixit remover. It is non-toxic as well and worked great. It is a little nerve wracking at first to use the string method, but it works great. Thank you
Mate, you just saved me some cash, because I was so scared with OWC Battery Replace video and also IFixIt step by step that I was about to pay a technician to do this for me. None of the other methods are as easy as your "nylon and string" method. Thumbs up! But just a heads up: I wasn't that careful on avoiding the (OWC) Newertech adhesive remover touching the plastic base of the speaker that lays right in front the border cells. Just a little drop of it touched the black plastic and it turned white, as some chemical reaction was happening and melting the plastic. So people, while applying the adhesive remover be extremely careful to avoid dropping a bit of it on the logic board or touching any piece that is not supposed to. Again, thanks heaps for your video!!

Just finished my replacement based on this video. Excellent technique - the "string cutting" worked really well for me. An additional note for this technique: you may hear a little "popping" that sounds like it could be battery cracking - in my case that was the sound of the little piece of metal below the center batteries flexing as I "cut" the batteries off it. Once you know what that is, it's pretty obvious - but the first time it can make you worried that the batteries "cracked" (which, of course, no one wants...)

I used the iFixit kit and instructions. Worked like a charm.
I used a composite shim (available at any hardware store) to remove the battery and the adhesive stickers plus used some nail polish remover.
Thanks for the video! The procedure worked as explained. I used waxed dental floss to saw through the stickers and used the plastic tools to remove the batteries toward the front of the case while using the cards to leverage the batteries.

Just did this, and it works. Thank you for showing me how. One thing that is different - the iFixit kit now includes a squeeze bottle with a tip rather than a small jar of solvent and a syringe. Much harder to control where/how much solvent is applied. The center 2 batteries were much harder to free up, perhaps because I was too concerned about getting solvent on the trackpad, which was underneath. But it worked!

Thanks for the video "hand holding," it made all the difference. May I add a couple thoughts?
Applying the solvent: when I tried squirting it gently into the gaps, the fluid wanted to get sucked uphill instead of flowing downward (capillary action, I think). I could dribble it in, and it would disappear uphill. Not what I wanted.
I got around it using one of the guitar-pick looking tools they sent. I stuck the little flat tool into the crack, and when I dribbled the fluid down the pick, and it flowed behind the battery like I wanted.
Also, it was hard to keep the fluid from seeming to want to flow into the top of the trackpad for the center two battery packs. I didn't hear you address that, and when you did it, you seemed to just squirt the fluid in at the top. It didn't seem to cause any lingering problems, so far, but it did concern me. In your video (13:16) you can see clearly the trackpad butts up against the case, so there's a gap for fluid to go into.
And my fluid bottle had a built in nozzle, not a syringe, so it was not as easy to manipulate. I guess they've changed components since you filmed this.

Thank you for the Tutorial! Just replaced my battery, not too thought, but not super easy… just little patience. Thanks for suggesting ifixit too.
I used this tutorial for my MBP 15" early 2013 model, and it worked great! In addition to improving my battery life, my laptop also runs much cooler than when my old battery had a "service battery" warning. I use the Mac Fan Control app, and I was clocking CPU core temps of 85-90C while using Google Chrome prior to this repair, and up to 100C for Adobe design programs! Now, the CPU cores run at about 45-55C for Google Chrome usage, and about 70C for Adobe programs...
About the tutorial, I will say that the adhesive was much, much harder to dissolve than this video advertises. It took hours of applying solvent and sawing/prying under the battery in cycles. **Be super careful not to bend or warp the battery, it can catch fire or explode** Also, the trackpad is directly underneath the two main battery packs towards the center of the laptop. I almost dislodged the trackpad from the laptop when attempting to pry the battery from the adhesive. Make sure to wipe any excess fluid or remaining adhesive from the edges as well. Luckily, it still functions just fine, although it doesn't press down as far as it used to. Another note, the battery from IFixit did not sit perfectly flush some reason. Make sure to connect the battery to the laptop before you remove the protective plastic coating from the new battery & stick it into place (if you run into the same problem). There is a bit of flexibility in the wires that run from the battery pack to the connector. Lastly, make sure to dispose of your old battery using a hazardous waste removal company. It is unsafe to throw it in with standard trash.
there is another video showing that you do not require adhesive remover. I just used it. Worked a treat. Just needed gloves to "saw" through the adhesive with the string. Adhesive remover not required

Thanks - This video is exactly the way to do this. I just did this today, using the same ifixit kit and it worked perfectly. My original battery was ballooning badly and it had only 77 cycles. The only issue I had was startup after replacement. I got errors saying can't load system software and then no system found. I reset the SMC and the Pram, after which it booted up fine.
How to do this ? reset SMC and PRam ?

I didnt get kit but, got own acetone and air can duster, prods, screwdrivers, Q-tips etc. all for less... hoping all goes well - mine a swollen like little pillows and kinda worried about exploding etc....

This method worked like a charm! One video showed basically disassembling every component from the case prior to battery removal. That was too many screws and connectors to remove and reassemble. One slip and the MacBook was dead! Tilting the case to keep the acetone under the batteries, and using great care with the string negated the laborious disassembly. The residual tape in my MacBook was much more difficult to remove than yours.
I did this job on my son's Late 2013 this morning. I found that using an old credit card from the side worked nicely to loosen the batteries. $55 for an OEM battery off Ebay. Came with the tools for the case screws and the battery screws, too.
This is much quicker than removing all the components and the nylon string idea looks easier than using the plastic credit cards supplied by iFixit. I went the other route and removed all the non-battery parts first. I found a lot of dust inside the heat pipe vents and the fan vanes. So this allowed me to use a soft artist's brush and vacuum to clean the dust off all the parts. I agree there's more risk of damaging the very small connectors and you have to be careful when reinstalling the logic board not to trap the various cable ends around it. Removing the dust allows my MBP to run cooler and quieter now with the new battery. Thanks for the good tips.

Thanks a million. The string tip for removing the old battery was great. I actually used 80lb fishing braid line and no glue solvent. Had to wear gloves so the line would not cut my skin, but it worked perfectly.
Now I can carry my MacBook again without the need of being plugged.
I was thinking that waxed dental floss would work too.

THANKS so much. Mission accomplished this evening. I had my steel trash can at the ready in case of battery fire (as were quite swollen). TIP: blow the dust off your fans while the cover is off - just a can of compressed air for this.
Thanks for posting this. Not having adhesive remover and the wires handy, I use WD-40 and dental floss instead. The dental floss is not as strong so it breaks easily, but I manage to do it eventually after several attempts. It takes me 2+ hours.

Do you mean to just cover the display with aluminum before removing the battery? like sticking a layer between the keyboard and display?
@@cheddarcheeze Yes, to protect the display from any adhesive remover that may drip. Maybe overly cautious but it was cheap insurance . Here's a picture of what I did to prep.

Fed, thanks a lot for this video. It worked like a charm and i was using a replace kit from China with just the bare minimum tools provided - i got my own gear anyways. One detail, which might be of interest for some: I did not have this liquid to soften the glue and i wanted to do it anyways - right now. So i rubbed some oil from the kitchen (yes, ordinary oil for your salad and YES - the idea of my wife) into the floss and that went out very nice. This way there is also no danger to spoil the electronics with anything aggressive. I now have my backup mac back as an option to work with. The old batteries were fat and ugly. Dangerous one might say. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for the video. Of course, with the right tools it is always safer and easier, but I did not have time to wait for them, and managed to do it also with a dental floss, an old credit-card-like thing, and without the glue solvent.

Yeah thanks! I had to buy the battery from another dealer (iFixIt wouldn't send to Hawaii). Glad I read the video because I probably would've tried prying out the battery and it exploded or something. Replacing the battery on my wife's iPhone 7 was one of the scariest things I've done lately... iFixIt is willing to send me adhesive remover :)
Great video. Others have mentioned how "outrageous" Apple's battery replacement is, but I think it's a fair price. For $200, they are replacing the entire top case. The only problem is, they told me it would take 5-7 days to repair it. I've read on forums an entire Apple store was evacuated due to a mac battery exploding. So I'm here nervously watching this before I attempt to replace my battery.
I agree. For this particular model, the price of battery replacement isn't outrageous. Plus, if you have Apple do it, and anything goes wrong, it's their fault. My personal recommendation is that if you can be without your MacBook Pro for a week, having Apple do it is the safest route and only marginally more expensive.

Did it today MBP2015 late 2013 not a big deal. I want to encourage you at this point. You can do it by yourself, no need for apple support and give your MB away for several days if not up to 2 weeks. :)
I must say thank you for this is saved me a headache. It was a pain in the butt to get all the sticky residue off but I did and got it done and now my busted battery is at 107% of new. I fixit needs to change up their site or at least link to this video.
