      Yea, I actually started playing recently(I played age of mothology quite a bit years ago, but not that much AoE 2), doing the campaigns and some skirmish modes, might go play some multiplayer games eventually too and I can totally appreciate how this game survived the test of time and with a bunch of fun & interesting strats to do. I've been playing LoL for the past years now, and that game is soooooooooo boring, all about 100-0ing some1 with a champ with a bunch of dashes. I envy AoE 2 players lul.

      Tbh, the counter to this is probably some sort of proxy build play (for those who watch the competitive sc2 scene. Sending it out early, trick them, show up with a roflstomp army behind the wall when you realize they hit the point where they spent too much resources securing it. Making sure not to reveal your hand too early, and appear you are playing behind as if you are just a bit slow to gather things in the back. Get the reaction of "omfg, I walled you out, how are you in my base destroying my shit?"
      The trick is definitely more towards knowing the person you are playing against, and planning it out on your RND map properly (at least in SC2, it was more about knowing each map and where to proxy)

    It's called "circumvallation". It was a tactic utilized by Gaius Iulius Cæsar during his siege of the Gallic oppidum of Alesia. His legionaries over the course of a few days, had built two walls surrounding the town, the inner track being 23 miles and the outer track being 26. With this tactic, he was able to defeat the beleaguered Gauls from the city and an army sent to break the siege which in total was six times the size of his own army. It's one of Cæsar's most famous battles.

    • @Numira
      @Numira 6 лет назад +7

      he could build a wall cause he was already besieging the city and the surrounding people fled into the city walls, which was normal till 17th century. btw. it was less a wall than a fortification, which the romans often times did when besieging enemys, setting up a camp for their troops.
      it was only bigger then previous ones. just to make clear. the army was not 6 tims bigger you talk about the numbers the romans used or julius himself. it was well known even by later roman historians that in the antique, in battles, romans, greeks and so on on purpose made the numbrs bigger, then thy actually were to make it look like the victory was even greater and for political gains.
      the same was for reducing the numbrs of casualties then the actually were. till vietnam war, this number fakeing ,was still used to justify wars too.
      the number of roman troops was probably correct with 70k included the supporting troops. the gauls had probably a 40-60k strong army otside and around 15k-25k man inside alesia but whom a goood numbeer were demoralized and started to starve, thats why vercingetorix sent children, sick, old and women outside but julius did not let them pass and insted let them die slowly.
      the army could not be that big, cause of previous battles the gauls fought, the overall population in the area surrounding it, alesia as a city would never had more enough space for so many, the tactics the romans used could only have beena chieved with equal numbrs otherwise they would have been completely obliterated. they did in fact break through the lines multiple times. people rly forget that especially the celts were not savages but highly skilled warriors, traders, merchants and so on. they adapted roman culture and other things befor their downfall same goes for romans adapting certain techniques in their early stages as a citystate. gauls did btw. no cease to exist they just integrated pretty ell into roman society and were know in the roman army for thei loyalty and greater gaul provinces were one of the most stable ones in the empire.
      maybe one explanation for this misconception is because often people think, gauls/celts were the same then germans. after reading literature i even would say. celts were closer culturally to romans then they were to germans. another misconception. gauls were the same then celts. gauls were normally refered to celts in todays france. other areas of celts had been captured and integrated into the roman empire befor. also celts were not a humonigous society. there were certain things of rituals, art, religion the same but other things different in all of europe. since celts stretched from the iberian peninsula, to britain, central europe, central turkey, balkan, alps and eastern europe.

    Easiest way to break free from being walled in like that? Have your villages start chopping the thinnest section of trees. Once you fell the tree, you can place a build site down which will remove the felled tree, just remove the build site before it has hitpoints and you lose nothing. Do this repeatedly and you'll break out of the trees.
    My favorite map type is Black Forest, my mother taught me to use the trees to my advantage, cutting pathways through the forests using Onager. It's very easy to dominate the map when you your effectively editing the battlefield to your advantage. Set up shop next to a small lake to fish farm, and free up the small amount of space for buildings by not needing to farm on land.

      Spring was "completely trapped" because he had no quick way to go to castle age before Timothy and get some siege and rams to batter these walls down… because there was no gold to collect. • @adrianbundy3249
      @adrianbundy3249 5 лет назад

      Nah, thinking the trick would have been to know who he was, and had builders make a surprise for him in the back, while not revealing too much as in a lack of units and 'omfg, you walled me in'... When spent too much - destroy the fuckers main. It has been used successfully on other RTS games in containment. The trick is to not be properly scouted before you lay your trap, mind games.
      It is a common tactic as an early sort of rush in a game like SC2; but it kind of works like what tarrker is talking about. You can't wall properly everywhere, and if they come from behind you and you didn't think of it - suddenly you wasted a lot of resources that will not help you save the game for yourself.

Not the right strategy for this map, but Spring -was trolling with his scout- had reassigned his scouting element to offensive duties, and Timotheus has brilliantly exploited his? superior real-time military intelligence to pull it off. Then you build 9 LLTs back a bit from your own base, fly your enemy commander over there and drop him in the middle, he will die after 15 seconds. For excitement we'd force feed them fat sheep so they'd make troops and attempt to escape, but they never get out of our impenetrable quadruple wall system with towers/troops et lol it was some of the best most sadistic fun ive had in gaming

    This is also a really good strategy in masters of orion, especially if you play a spiral galaxy. You don't develop the technology to jump spiral arms till later on in the game, so if you can quickly identify the opponent you're sharing your spiral arm with, you can settle systems in a way that cuts him off and pins him into a corner while you colonize the rest of the arm. It's super passive aggressive. By the time they resort to war and border breaches to break out, there should be a big enough disparity in your respective resources that they become an easy target.

      Kinda reminds me of other classic RTS games, like Starcraft and Warcraft 3. Despite their age, there's a competitive scene for them still. I didn't realize there was still a WC3 scene until I got on Twitch and saw Grubby (that wasn't the discovery moment), and then learned through his chat that there are in fact still some pros circulating, and tourneys held. You probably couldn't really live on the winnings anymore, but tourneys are still held all the same. The Starcraft competitive scene apparently never died, it just lost some popularity to other big games, which makes sense. It was still televised until something like 2012, but plenty of tourneys still circulate around S. Korea, what with the guys of Tastosis apparently living there specifically to cast them along with some SC2, and Starcraft still pulls well over 15k+ players on the daily.

    I've felt that move before, it's a rough move. However, my economy was entirely unaffected, as I was Built around selling Food from the start, removing my access to Gold slowed me down for only 2 minutes, at which point I immediately spammed an extra 20 Farms to compensate, within 15 minutes I was breaching the Walls at record speed, and had even managed to get behind the Walls because I'd Micro Managed through the Trees using a swarm of Villagers.
    By the time their Troops had maneuvered to cut my advance off, it was too late, I was raiding the defensive structure on the other side of the enclosure, a perfect Feint Attack, backed up by Catapults and Archers.
    Sadly, they'd been preparing a similar strategy, so I ended up dying about 20 min later when they showed up with their own Armada. Their war of attrition had hit me unexpectedly in my Wood reserves, causing me to stall at the worst possible moment, and they just rolled right through me because of it.
    My kill ratio broke 130 that match though, they thanked me for being one of the best fights they'd had all week lol

Spring might have been able to cut down some of the trees (which weren't walled around) and build ghost palisades or something to get rid of the cut trees to break through without Timotheus being alerted.

    If you can pull it off - this one works even better in 0AD (which has many AOE parallels), because how the walls work in that game. Basically they allow more stretching for material, high hitpoints, and you can garrison ranged units in them for some firepower defense without dedicated towers. Differences mainly being you've got to get to the second stage and get a lot of stone fast, also dealing with territory influence and knowing how to counter or exploit it.

    a strategy i used in the first AoE was to make walls and leave an entrance made of a long corridor with towers on each side. the AI in that game always followed the path of least resistance towards the target. the main target was the town hall and it prioritized threats it met on the way, so as long as there was a free path to the target, the AI army would ignore walls that posed no threat so the enemies did not try to break them and make another entrance. so they walker right in the towers and were killed on the way. now you will ask why did they not attack the towers since they were a threat and that is again based on the path of least resistance. the towers were placed in a Π shaped wall that was open from the town side so the AI again ignored the direct route that required the demolition of the wall and tried to get to the towers by walking along the entire length of the corridor to enter the tower area from the opening and took damage all along the way with barely any soldier reaching the target.
    i never really tried to see if that strategy works in AoE2

"Plumed" is pronounced with a long "u" so "plum" is never heard during the pronunciation of "plumed." Before you accuse someone of not being "smart enough," have some modesty and check your facts beforehand.

    • @VoltigeurGT
      @VoltigeurGT 5 лет назад

      @@timjung640 I don't wanna be rude or anything, but I think you're going too much into detail. The lame joke "plum-ed archer" is already quite old and it has always been meant as a lame joke, although since jokes stop being jokes when you overuse them, people kinda forgot it ever existed some time ago. So, I wanted to bring back the good ol' memories that the people who have been around for long enough still remember. This also sorta uncovers the fact you probably thought I made that one up (which I certainly haven't) and also that you can't be familiar with the AoE community for too long, else you'd have known. I hope I satisfy you with this explanation as I never meant to create a fuss over such a stupid thing. Have a nice day sir!
