The Legend of WALL

- I received many emails about this "Wall" player who (surprise surprise) tries to win by walling people in. Well, he warned them!
Additional info- Watched a few dozen wall games since this happened. He wins and loses a lot of games with this strategy. He also has 10% disconnects which might account for the end of this game. Hope you enjoyed!

Maybe he loves walling noobs so much, he resigns whenever he's basically won, to stay low ELO
Possible, I mean he’s clearly very low elo himself but he knows he can’t do it to higher level players so he intentionally keeps his elo low.
I don´t think he resigns to keep his elo low. First of all he did some typical low elo stuff. The opponent nearly broke through a few times. I could imagine that there would be some opponents who would get their way out of their, even if they are low elo.
And secondly, you say that he has basically won, which is not true. If the blue player gets a one tile gap(petards?) he can stream trash units outside and take a large part of the map. On top of that, WALL probably doesn´t know what the red player has inside his base so he can´t really judge if he is ahead.
However if he drops one out of ten times, his elo is lower than it should be.
I dont think so. He is definitelly very low elo player. And red was still in a winning position, he just doesnt know how to win.
that be pointless as if you want to be low elo again all you need to do is do (10) quick matches where you resign.

Kinda like how I played Star Craft and other Strats. I build an impenetrable defense, then expand it and surround the enemy and destroy him from my encroaching wall. The moving-wall or living-wall strategy.
I got walled by WALL on my first 1v1. I waited, built a strong eco, Palladians, Trebs, Halberdiers. Just as I was about to Ongar through the trees, WALL Ongered through the trees and came in with an army of Palladians. I survived, but gg'ed soon after out of sheer exhaustion! #thelegendofwall

Funny , back in the 90s when I grew up playing AOE2, what gave me most pleasure was building walls around my lands, creating borders with an enemy faction.
Imagine an AI setting that does this. Should be interesting.
If you’re worried about red feeling bad, he absolutely crushed me in a 1v1 the other day and I’m 1200 elo. He must have big on and off games or something
He seems like he'd be excellent against orthodox strategies
More than anything he just seemed out of ideas. His eco was brilliant, he was floating 1000s of resources the majority of the game, but he didn't seem capable of putting any of it to good use. You can see he had ideas with the cavs, onager cutting, even the tower in the beginning.. I think it's just his creativity and adaptability that is lacking a bit behind. I'm sure in more standard games he plays very well for his elo. There was a point in time where he had 12k wood and 5k gold, and blue still didn't have many bombards out. Red could have just flooded all the walls with an endless ram push, and blue wouldn't be able to do anything to combat it. Sure he could kill 10 of them, but red was in a position to make 100 rams if he liked, but he didn't make a single one. He just needed to spend his resources earlier.
basically like every low-ish elo player
consistency isn't our thing
@@Real_MisterSir Yep, seems like one of those 1000's who are decent at booming and really sloppy with the military side of the game.

"The best offence is a good defense"
WALL thought they meant it literally.
"If you collected 20K wood, 20K food, and 10K gold, you can create hot air balloons in your castles. "
That's what the red was thinking.
And that's why he saved all the resources, only wasted a little on 8 archers.
He gave it up because he needed to pee.

@@alexborr1746 In 3x3, the arrangement is
1 2 3
4 5 6
The players 2 & 5 are in the middle and also, more distant from each other. So they have slightly less chance of being attacked, and do more Economy upgrades, etc. They are called pocket players. Similarly, in 4 x 4, there will be two middle players on one side and two middle players on another, so 4 pocket players.
Edit: I guess 2 pockets in comment refers to a pocket for each team.

The thing I like about this so much is that this wasn't a random I-think-I'll-try-this sort of thing. This was a very carefully executed strategy with a build order and everything. When he clicked to start the game, he already knew he would be using arbeques bombard cannons to finish it.

roman siegue tactics, just like Julius Caesar against Gaul tribes, he is a real tactician :)
I just watched a video on that yesterday
I mean Caesar had to build an inside and outside wall. To keep an army inside the city and another wall to keep out the approaching army. Caesar and his legion was next level in an area with very little supply too

At 18:54 a twitch comment asks if there is any historical precedent for this strategy and, surprisingly, there actually is!
See the Battle of Alesia during the conquest of Gaul. Julius Caesar found a heavily fortified Gaul camp and built a new wall around it, starving them out. Mad that this was an actual strategy.
This tactic was also employed during the Punic Wars and basically the Romans became extremely good at offensive walls.

How often did he do that? I only heard about the siege of Alesia
i feel like I need a fatslob vs hoang after watching this one idk why
the moment I see wall, i get reminded of Fatslob & I knew I sure can find one in the comments ;)
I am thinking it's because this strategy sucks and yet it's praised in RUclips videos because people are incompetent and lose to it. It wouldn't fair well at the top level but to be fair wall/fatslob vs any top player would be unfair as they would get crushed even if it was a sound strategy

Also, it's good to hear that he isn't a scumbag that's humiliating these players and then dropping deliberately when he has the upper hand.
I mean he kinda advances peoples skill if you think about it, he forces them to consider strategy rather than repeating the same plan game after game. I don’t think that makes him scum, just kinda weird lol.
Once on Arena someone Persian douched me by walling me in and then breaking down the walls in dark age, and gradually moving his TC closer to mine - while building palisade walls so that the area I had to move in was smaller and smaller until I didn’t have resources to rebuild my TC

I saw britons and thought red would mass up longbows and just turtle till blue ran out of steam but then I realized he was portugese and feitorias are a thing.
This video made me so happy, the strategy, the commentary, and the end was just the cherry on top 11, thanks for your uploads t90
This game was fucking LEGENDARY. *PLEASE GIVE US MORE WALL!*
This game really kept my attention, I tend to multitask nowadays whilst listening to you, but this had me glued to the screen.
Man, red going through all the effort to break out WITHOUT UNITS OTHER THAN SIEGE drove me NUTS
Cutting through trees just to wall to the edge is thoroughly petty
5 years later he is still walling the people. I played against him on the old version of the game many years ago. Legends never die
What I love about the Portugal pick is that, their feitorias and to a letter extent cheaper units have absolutely zero synergy with this strategy, because the whole point of this is that you secure the entire map.
As ridiculous as this strategy is, it does have historical precedent.
Just look at the Battle of Alesia - Caesar walled in the Gauls, and then walled in his own legions once he heard the Gauls were sending reinforcements.
The name of this youtube video should have been "Prison break"
or Prison Architect.

Lesson: Always protect your gates and resource stockpiles nearby. Without access to gold, your opponent has no challenge to their supremacy. Early skirmishers are all it takes, to stop enemies building too close to your base. Supported with spear men and even villagers if needed. Don’t feel bad sending villagers into battle, if it stops the enemy denying you access to gold.
The enemy has already sent their villagers across the map, to do battle and so is already behind economically.
Once you’ve achieved ‘base security’, your villagers are nicely positioned to build, and or gathering materials. They can place houses instead of watchtowers and an early stable to reinforce your position.
Then get Castles up ASAP to solidify your gains and remember to get the relics and upgrades at university.
Protect monks at all costs though, as they will heal your cavalry units that you can rotate in and out of battle, as they’re wounded.
Always have a rapid reaction force of trash units at hand, in case enemy tries a ram rush and cavalry to use as a 2nd wave, followed by archers or ranged units with a group of monks close by.
This way you can even bring the trash units back to be healed, at the exact moment your cavalry are entering the fray. The enemy may even follow your trash units and be killed, by your supporting divisions and castles.
Then a reversal on your enemy is possible, as they’re out of position, have less resources and they’re defences are incomplete, bc they went offensive too much. At least raiding they’re economy will make matters even worse for them and they will never fully recover.
The only way they can recover is by trading at the market, so make sure you buy up what they need so the price is high for them, and or sell your excess resources, so they can’t get gold easily.
The best key to victory is to gain monopoly on the gold.
Tip: You can send villagers to build walls around resources and even relics. Connecting walled resources nearby to your base, will make accessing them easier, if the enemy does gain early superiority.
33:23 well, maybe he was playing with a self-imposed challenge of not getting wheelbarrow before a full hour has passed. xD
I see the title, I have to like it- finally someone acknowleged the beauty of Walling:)
"that is so next lever"
Red had a real chance to break out when he cut down those trees, but he rushed it, because he only had a handful of Longbowmen... His eco was so good, that I feel if he had prepared a stronger force, Blue wouldn't have been able to contain him.
Great game though, always love these unconventional strategies!
31:44 BarbaricMonkey "Where there's a Will, there's a Wall"
He should have made the entire path trough the woods to the enemies base.
Need to play music over this - "I want to break free"
Those bombard cannons in pockets behind 10 layers of walls partitioned through intricate gates remind me of the walls of Constantinople chapter in Atilla The Hun campaign. I really feel for red here.
This kind of reminds me of Julius Caesar's siege of Alesia. Caesar surrounded Alesia with walls to protect his army laying seige, and to protect himself from being attacked by seige relief forces, he built walls around the outside of his army as well.
So Alesia had walls, and Caesar had walls.... and then more walls. With troops in the middle of his two sets of walls.
That's a lotta nuts!
The Romans actually used this strategy a couple of times in history. Except in real life it's even more devastating as you run out of food much faster in real life. They used this against the Gauls for certain. The Gauls had a wall, and so the Romans spent months building a second wall around theirs and starved them.
Anyhow, when playing against someone named "WALL", get some infantry outside your walls ASAP.
If Gaius Julius Caesar was alive today that’s exactly how he would play this game 😁😆🤣
This gave me some nice hearty chuckles at work today. Love the content.

Nooooo way
Omg we need more from this player! This was so different from everything, even though it was a low level game, that was fantastic and unorthodox.
When is blue coffee 11:52hour coming ?
What happened at the end of the game was WALL resigning. He does this so that he can use this strategy against players who are not good enough to beat this strategy.
Do you have data to back this claim up? I watched dozens of games (we used a VM to spectate his games so i can get recs and also searched myself) and he seems to drop in situations where he's behind and ahead. According to his profiles he has a high drop percentage and according to him his aussie net causes drops. I get that what you're saying DOES happen, but I thought this myself until I investigated a bit. Hard to say ofc I just don't want to get behind persecuting a guy for something that's not proven.
I thought that, but we can see that he didn't move in something like 3 minutes any of his units, the onagre didn't continue to destroy innocent forest trees, his canons that he tried to save from the trebuchets have litteraly stopped to move. It's only my hypothesises ^^
@u wot? if you want to low your elo, you just rush the first five mins, make it look legit, otherwise you are wasting your time to get back to a low elo.
T90Official - Age Of Empires 2 Oh got you, my bad.
