I went to A&P school and this is the most professionally done instructional video I have ever seen.

If you're doing the Transgo kit...plan on 3+ hours for this lesson. GET that 7/64th drill bit and the others ready. Get a steel block and ball hammer ready too. Its a good idea to have a harbor freight cheapo digital caliper to check drill bit sizes this small. Also recommend using a small shop vac as you drill to get that metal death! THERE ARE NO DO OVERS here folks. Once you drill....its done. Better get it right! Mr. Williams is of course right about the wood block hammer trick for removing stuck valves. they do come out eventually. GOOD LUCK!

It should be noted that the selector shaft on earlier models goes in just the OPPOSITE of this video! This will save you having to take the pan back off to change it...

Let’s wind the clocks back a year.
This transmission wasn’t giving me any trouble at all. What happened? Did the ball valves fall out?

Why do you prefer to re-use the old check balls?
Being Rubber, would not heat and age take a toll on these items?

They do not wear, they are designed to not shrink or wear.

I read this after i posted the question. I probably should have deleted my question then...
Lee Barnes: "...general consensus is that OEM plastic balls are much better quality across the board.
"...steel [balls] will have a different operational characteristic than original OEM plastic balls and some prefer the shift of the OEM plastic balls..."

If the originals are plastic (and they are here) there can be issues of quality of that plastic of the new balls - general consensus is that OEM plastic balls are much better quality across the board. Replacement balls of steel will have a different operational characteristic than original OEM plastic balls and some prefer the shift of the OEM plastic balls too based on past experience with other transmissions. It's your shop, do what you want. It's obviously not too important or he would have conveyed that to us - ask yourself this, is he extremely detail orientated or a forgetful slaphappy slob? So his choice here is a personal preference and not important enough to make a crusade issue over it. Others with ego issues would issue a fatwa instead, I prefer this man's approach to the issue. We both noticed, while I have the knowledge of higher OEM quality of plastic balls as to why he would do that.

Lee Barnes Many thanks for your comment, It answered my question. I'm a retired heavy equipment mechanic and I love all the education on you tube. I've never rebuilt an automatic transmission. The companies I worked for would all send pickup automatic transmissions to a transmission shop. My last employer was a Corporate Construction company --- Almost all the pickups were Ford's and the power stroke variety used this transmission. From what I could gather, Most all the transmissions in the fleet had problems and Granite Construction would send them back to the dealer -- If they were out of warranty something got worked out. I never could get a handle on why these transmissions were such a problem.. The powers would simply tell me "It's fixed." When this instructor put up this series of Video's, I was, and am very thankful for his efforts to help people understand and rebuild this transmission. Few weeks back I was watching ford tech mukiloco and he went into a valve body and was showing how various plastic check balls had been tore up (on a 4R 70W) -- But he did say to replace with them OEM check balls. I know it's Sad that a retired old boy (ME) can't put all that bullchit behind him and simply forget everything that he never totally understood. --- But Along came you tube and I am very thankful for all the you tube instructors. Believe me -- I have learned a whole lot since I retired in 2009. Again, Thanks for your comment -- Another piece of the puzzle is now in place !!!

The intermediate band piston cover and snap ring don't fit the new style piston guys only the old type 89 and older piston uses the cover and snap ring see the e4od update PDF or buy the book.

I called customer service and Jimmy himself answered. The fix for older model e4ods is to forgo the cover and snap ring.
