ZEN MASTER. Seriously, If you've always wanted to learn slush boxes...go get a junkyard 4R100 and rebuild it just to follow along. This guy is one of the best shop instructors ever! I bought an Expedition with a bad tranny just for this purpose.

The gen 1 2valvess are pretty solid if you can tighten down your spark plugs and change them every no and then. The tranny is the weak point but only after about 225k mi. I have one with 270k and drive train is still original. One rebuild and youre good to go. I'm gonna see how long it takes to kill the engine with just normal use and regular maintenance. This vid is gonna help with that 😃

Note to anyone who has the cast type overdrive coast clutch it is considerably different from the stamped steel version as shown in this video and you will find that the roller sprag is actually part of the planetary gear assembly.
My thanks for producing this series of classes which are professional factory training quality.

Great stuff really. Only this I would have asked different on the whole this so far is showing the e4od Overdrive clutch drum and gear assembly. They are very much different and had and as for the people saying he should have used a power tool, I think it was perfect cause I used my impact and took it apart faster but since I was watching and doing I was able to go with his speed.

Question for anyone that might know.
I have a 1990 e4OD 4wd model. I am using a donor 2wd model of an unknown later year. (Still an OBS year) just unsure of the exact year.
My overdrive planetary is what went out on mine. It is a 4 sprocket planetary. The donor transmission has a 3 sprocket planetary.
If I replace the entire planetary assembly, (not just the planetary gear) with the overdrive clutch assembly with the solar gear of the 3 sprocket, will it work?
Ultimately converting this 1990 e4OD from a 4 sprocket overdrive planetary to a 3 sprocket.
I have both assemblies out and next to each other. They have the same outside measurements. The inside is obviously different from each other.
The other option is to spend another $100-150 and wait another week (that I don’t really have) on parts.. :/

i notice a dot marking on the stator inner gear in the pump but u said nothing of a indexing of it does that get indexed at some point ?

    • @bigjuicygarage4754
      @bigjuicygarage4754 Год назад

Those marks are just there to know which side goes up. The gears are going to rotate but there isn’t any timing aspect that requires a specific orientation.

Currently undertaking a cummins 12 valve swap into my 1996 F250 that had a gas 460 E4OD, as I will require to service the transmission, which transmission would you recommend to use ? or would the 460 E4OD be a good candidate for this swap?

I noticed that the stator tube is bolted in, can it be pressed out and replaced if it is worn. In the past I have replaced the stator tubes in Powerglides and turbo 400s. The 2004r transmission has a replaceable stator tube also.

These videos are a God's send.
My question is about the “Overdrive roller clutch outer race” at about 24 minutes. 1989 - 1994, 1995 - 1997 then 1998 and later. My truck was made 09/97 but is a 1998. There appears to be no way of knowing which of these I need. There is no measurements or differing number of teeth or whatever to differentiate which type before I order. Do I need a “1998 or later”?. Transition year and all that.

I hear you and was thinking the same thing.. This is more of a lesson in "proper" disassembly vs quick. It is quite the show but I am with you.. a nice battery operated drill etc. will speed up the process.. but WOW the attention to detail is so nice.. I feel like going into the transmission repair business..:) or at least have the ability, knowledge and back up to rebuild my 4r100 when it needed it or before.
